The 458 is really a gem of a car. What I love about your videos Richard is how *really* in-depth you get with pre-purchase inspections and advice on what to do and what not to do. Most reviewers and owners don’t really tell you much aside from “I’ve replaced this and that, so far no problems!” That’s rare.

I do have a question regarding reliability and maintenance, if I can ask. Since you’ve had yours for a year or so, how well has the car held up for you? Has it been mostly stress free?

Yes, car has been pretty much stress free. Some glitches but standard with these cars and easily resolved yourself if you learn about the car.
It is amazing to me that the tool belt straps break on so many cars with such minimal use but Ferrari continues to use them without concern.
Yes I suspect due to the general accelerating forces putting strain on the straps

Nice video Rich, glad to say mine has everything on it, interestingly on my carbon seats I have rear facing Scuderia shields which you can see through the engine bay when viewed from behind, I guess not optional for the Spider??
Interesting, I’ve not heard of that as an option only the horse embroidered onto the top front of the seat.

My 458 Spider didn't have a rear camera. But this thing is essential because without it I once killed the rear diffusor when reversing. So I had an aftermarket solution installed by the Ferrari dealership. The camera is installed quite discreetly above the license plate between the two illumination lights. It sends its signals to the right TFT screen just as the stock camera does. It works nicely.
For the original Ferrari camera you would have to change the bumper. For this aftermarket solution you don't have to.
Yes, I have the reversing camera though I tend to rely on the door mirrors more.

Hi Richard, what a great detail review of your amazing car. Your video really go show you definitely know what to look out for when purchasing this car. I really appreciate how much attention and detail that you go into describing what to look out for when buying a Ferrari Spider 458.
I notice a 2014 Ferrari 458 in Bianco Italia, a triple layer and pearlescent white that I was looking at (I l use to think that Ferrari's should always be in red) was missing the carbon fibre side sections on the centre console and no photos of the back of the seats being carbon fibre. Also, I notice that your has to the left of your steering wheel an additional PIT speed minus and plus control knob something that was missing on the car that I was looking at.
Definitely a dream super sports car that I will hopefully own in the near future. PS, if you haven't watched it, I seriously recommend that you and anyone else interested in this car watch Vicky Butler's Fifth Gear UA-cam video review of this car. It's pretty special

Please be mindful that my car is very highly specced with all items not necessarily essential for a min spec. I do go through what i would recommend as a minimum spec, additional items to the min spec. IMO would be a bonus.

Great review. Only thing I differ on CF race seats are not that well sought out according to Ferrari chat.
They are important for resale...most potential customers do prefer the look and in the 458 they are very comfortable.
I think you're right on, on most points, well done.
The CF bucket seats are really cool, but I think putting them on a "min spec" list is a bit extreme. I don't think more than 10-20% of 458s were spec'd with these.
I would say "CF Bucket or Daytona" seats. The default seats aren't very attractive, but the Daytona seats are cool. Admittedly I'm a bit biased because my current 458 spider and my prior 430 both have them.

It’s important to remember that the minimum spec is focused on both what I have noted most owners want and what is best for resale. There is no doubt in my mind that a very high proportion of prospective owners look for the CF race seats. In a way, it’s a self fulfilling prophecy.

letting your 458 garaged for a few days ?
I felt truly surprised while watching a YT video uploaded by a Ferrari California owner who was complaining about such an unpleasant issue.
I'd also like to know how the removable roof
works generally speaking (water leaking in the rain or wind drafts when cruising at speed on autobahn...Just to mention two possible issues).

Hi and thank you for engaging with our channel.
Firstly, yes with the 458 you need to keep it connected to the battery conditioner whenever the car is not in use. The 458 electronics tend to drain the battery quickly with the engine off and unfortunately this is normal for modern Ferraris.
Checkout my 458 Must Buy Items video for details of the battery conditioner.
A part way around this issue is to install a Lithium battery in place of the standard item.
Secondly, I have rarely driven my 458 in the rain and when I have it has never leaked and when washing the car it has never leaked.

With Ferraris it can vary considerably across a car depending on the panel...a horizontal panel such as engine cover or roof for example will probably be thicker than a wing (fender) or door skin.
When I measured mine before purchase they varied across different panels and sub-parts of panels from 100 microns to 200. You get a 'feel' for whether extra paint has been applied though as anything above say 300 is likely an additional layer of paint.
Please keep in mind, many Ferraris have had paint especially on the bumpers and this is in itself not an issue as long as it is not hiding other issues not known about such as accident damage etc.

Thanks for some really great videos on the 458 Spider. I’m lucky enough to have a 2013 car in Grigio Silverstone. To let you know Ferrari can now retrofit a reversing camera without replacing the bumper. Meridien Modena did a great job on mine.
Interesting. Was that outsourced to a third party to drill the bumper to create the camera hole?
@@RichReviews_ No, it was done in-house. I had to wait to do it as apparently Ferrari had just launched a new kit for the 458 enabling that. The image is really very good on the screen. Seems better than the image I had on my previous Italia that had the factory fitted option.
Also on the stereo, it’s worth noting that if you buy a 458!and intend to upgrade the hifi from the rubbish that comes with the car, it’s easier to upgrade the non premium version. I had mine done by Audio Incar (see them on UA-cam) and now I have an amazing system without drilling a single hole. On the Invery Bluetooth which you mention it’s far better than the Bovee. It’s also important (at least on my car) not to pair your phone with the Ferrari Bluetooth at the sametime. They seem to conflict. Keep the videos coming and hope to share notes at some point.

Agree with you regarding the Ferrari Bluetooth connection. as I mentioned in my video it conflicts and causes music stuttering so we also have it disconnected when using the Airdual.

Some 2010 and 2011 458s suffered DCT failures due to a faulty sensor. The problem has been corrected. Early on, the only solution was to replace the entire DCT. My guess is that would result in a discrepancy in the mileage record between dash and the transmission. I understand that the repair can now be performed on the DCT rather than replacing the entire thing, reducing the cost of the repair. The repair also likely preserves the mileage record. If anybody knows more details about this, feel free to chime in.
When you say 'corrected'...I do not believe there were any changes made to the DCT design throughout the years of production. However as you state, the approach to rectifying was improved with the transmission being able to be serviced off the car rather than requiring the more expensive replacement.
I believe the manufacturer improved the design of the pressure and speed sensors in the DCT. Later year models of the 458 seem pretty rock solid.
The Getrag DCT fitted to the 458 was initially implemented in the California in production a few years earlier than the 458 and this period acted as a trail test period for the gearbox.
As with all cars, especially performance cars, there are always some issues, mechanical systems are never immune to failures.
The known issues with early cars were due to the sensor wiring tie clips becoming brittle with heat and chaffing the sensor wiring causing sensor failure. The solution was to replace the sensors and of course wiring.
Love the 458 can’t wait to get one in my garage

What a Fantastic review of a 458 buyers guide , really in depth , not many 458,s around as clean as that i guess, as of 2023 , i do like the 488 spider , but them turbos strangle the sound , to be honest i think the 488 sounds NAFF ....but as Porshe 992 prices are coming down i think ill get a C4s ,....

Rotors should last the life of the car. If you’re super concerned, seek out a warranty insurance policy that covers them but that will be costly too.
@@RichReviews_ Mine is a Fuoco, race seats, with a lot of carbon fibre, but watching your video made me go to the garage and check if it had that carbon fibre around the sides of the centre tunnel (which it hasn't!)

The Buyers Guide is predominantly for future buyers, you shouldn’t worry if your car doesn’t have options that my car has, especially centre console side carbon panels! 😀
I was very lucky to end up with this awesome spec and I had to pay for it!
Incidentally, I have been to many shows and seen many differently specced 458s and have yet to see another with the console side panels in carbon therefore not having this option definitely does Not affect resale.
Got mine yellow 458 2010 4years back.. Was only driven for exactly 20.000 km .. Gona sell after 2 years from now hopefully i keep it as it us perfect condition and sell it really high

Would like to know more about your insurance / tracker costs (you look a similar age to me) and details regarding the insurers requirements to have a tracker. I’ve been looking at 458s for a while, the two hesitations for me are one, how you are perceived in this country as a Ferrari owner ? Do you get any negativity ? The other thing is the ‘automatic’ feel of the gearbox, the auto drop sound as it goes up the gears, it’s just not the same as a manual but perhaps when in ‘manual’ mode it is more like a manual car, I’d be interested in your take on that Great review, learned some new stuff there

"Tracked" must be a fairly common expression in the UK. Here we would say "Raced." I thought you were talking about something done to the tires or underside of the car, driven off-road as on an unimproved dirt or gravel path, or slid off the road in an accident maybe., had its tires knocked off. You had to go pretty far into it before I realized you meant a race track. 😅
Yes, the term Tracked in the UK means raced on a race track.
It’s like if it’s park next to the beach where I live and Not garage and not polished Often this can happen and to fix it perfectly how much have to re-paint the car I don’t Ferrari you’ll be paying as you know for hours are good for that unless you can do it yourself and your highly skilled
What about the engine and maintance records?
I detail that the car needs to have a full dealership maintenance history and recommend buying from a main dealer in which case all records would be up to date and the car would come with a New Power Warranty.
Very good review! However, the carbon fiber thing IMHO is not that desirable and only pads the price.
Views differ.. most prefer the carbon Sporty specification
I’m quite tall. Do the CF race seats (in the lowest position) grant a tall driver any extra headroom?
Short answer: Definitely.
Long answer: If most of your height is in your legs, then you will have reduced leg room but more headroom, and if your height is in your torso, you will have the opposite.
My son is 6’3 with long legs and fits absolutely fine in the car, in the unadjustable passenger seat (I believe the passenger seat is actually comparable to the highest driver seat setting by default). Interior room and seating positions are really no issue whatsoever in the 458.
@@RichReviews_ thank you. I’m a reasonably balanced 6’7” and do not fit in the coupe with comfort seats. Legroom is plentiful, but I can’t quite get my head low enough. One inch lower might do it.
Wow, 6’7” is tall. If you are only in need of an extra inch headroom then the race seats would provide that but I’d recommend you sitting in a 458 with race seats before you commit.
I’m looking to buy my first Ferrari and can’t decide between a 458 or 488!!
No one can tell you which to buy, it all depends on what you want from a Ferrari Supercar; Both cars are very special.
I chose the 458 against the 488 and the F8 because I loved the clean looks and the naturally aspirated engine. Especially when considering the interior still looks modern in the 458 with minimal changes in the 488/F8.

Daniel from NGS owns a 599 and an incoming Gallardo, I guess you lent Dan the F8 for his comparison video. Saw the 458/F8 comparison. I’ve driven both F8 variants and though incredibly fast, did not rate the soul of the F8.

Opinion on resale of a white Italia..
White is not the best colour for resale because the potential customers are a lot smaller and therefore harder to find...if based in the UK definitely do not sell until at least spring time unless you have no choice.
Rich, I am 6"4 in your opinion can I fit in this supercar? The Huracan you have to be 5"11 or shorter which is ridiculous!

In general tall people will be fine in a 458 but to be sure you need to sit in one to make certain.

A Little childish and chavish and rebellious. It is a requirement by law, and for anyone witnessing a moving traffic incident, I for one would want to be able to identify the vehicle. Grown ups tend to have both plates. My 488 and R8 look a lot better with front plates and with decent registration numbers, look the better for them!

I’m sure that when I’m offered a 6 figure premium over what I bought it for, or are made aware that the market makes this very possible, my logical brain will force me to take the money.
And I’m sure my heart will scream and cry and kick about that decision!
Which model are you looking to purchase? I’m not sure I would buy a Supercar for investment unless known limited numbers…the Speciale A for example.
S&P 500 would be a much better investment Jordon. I’ve got a 2014 458 and I drive it. It won’t lose money like my m4 did but it’s not really an investment.

I’m very into crypto and stocks myself - I agree that it won’t climb as much as an index over the next 5 years but here’s the thing: I’m after a supercar anyway. Certainly, I’ll be making other investments. But since I’m after a supercar, and conscious of price action on the car, I’m definitely keen on the anti-depreciation and potential investment of a 458
What finish is yours in?
Buying a Supercar for investment is folly. In order for it to be worth what it has to rise to you have to put that money into maintenance and servicing as well as not use it. You will end up fretting about value more than driving it.
That’s true with some cars. Different with others. Take the 458 for example, a low mileage high spec car- I’ve been told by professionals that if I took the mileage to 15-20K miles that I’d get pretty much what I paid and it’s cost me £0 in maintenance due to the service pack.
Take a CGT, F50, 993 GT2, Murcielago SV, 430 16M, Speciale Aperta, those sorts of cars. They will appreciate at a much higher rate than the maintenance costs. However take a 355 for example. A car like that would definitely be a dodgy purchase simply for investment purposes.

So the last V8 production Ferrari has something in common with the first V8 Production (1976 308 GTB)....the wheel arches corrode ! :) and yes I know the first one were fiberglass, but Ferrari switched to steel in late 76 production models.
True, but the 308 being steel would be a more damaging form of ferrous corrosion as opposed to oxidisation for the 458 with 458 cases being fairly rare.

20k for brake rotors on a 458? no way, just go for steel brakes for $3400. If your driving on the street carbon ceramics are a complete waste. Save the carbons for resale
You make a valid point. Doesn’t apply to me though as I bought the car with the brakes on 1% wear with it having done 5K miles. I don’t think anyone really changes the brakes on a 458 to steels to save the carbons though. Not for many years at least.
you need to try the carbon ceramics - they are unbelievable, even on the street - saved one certain high speed crash on my very first day of ownership !! - when a muppet just pulled out from the left - I still dont know how I missed him (her??) or how they could possibly NOT see a Red Ferrari with lights on coming at them @ 70mph - but I did miss them & steered around it = awesome

Ferrari pretty much did that by making the interface so challenging!
