I mean, it is still among the top five popular Pokemon along with Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Mewtwo. But it took 6 gens before it became truly viable. Honestly, it's typing sucks. Also, it's popularity as of late has taken a big hit from over-exposure.
@@animatedink2529 there’s also the fact that his viewers are actual Pokemon fans and not people who saw Charizard in smash bros or something and thought “Oh hey that’s cool” so they kind of understand that Charizard is pretty overrated

"His signature move physical fightin-' *Visible glare* "DARK, physical DARK move that's based on a fighting move, who is also based on fighting....but is dark.."
Incineroar is specifically based on "heel" wrestlers, the ones who play up the "bad guy"/dirty fighter role, as opposed to "faces" who are usually the good guys. They're the ones who intentionally try to get the crowds against them, cheat when the referee isn't looking, play up their jerkishness, and are basically, in theory, supposed to be the guys you love to hate if done well. (Though, as with many villains and antiheroes in fiction, it's not uncommon for heels to actually just be outright popular, despite or even *because* of their rough side, and while in the ring they're intentionally dicks a good amount are known to be among the nicest wrestlers to interact with as a fan, especially kids; this is where Incineroar's personality traits like not beating up foes it sees as too weak or injured to be a good fight and secretly enjoying the admiration of children and young Pokemon come from.) Hence the Dark type; Dark, despite what most people thing, isn't about literal darkness for the most part but about dirty tricks, underhanded moves, and the like, which is why most Dark moves are *physical* rather than special and consist of things like Sucker Punch and Fake Tears. Heck, its original Japanese name, "Aku", means "evil", not "dark". (This is also why it's weak to Fighting and Bug; those types have heroic associations in Japan due to stuff like super sentai shows, so they're good against what's basically the villain type.)* Incineroar's characterization and design all really, really play into the heel thing, and it's extremely obvious once you know about it. It's so thorough that, while I could see the initial concept being Fighting, I'm pretty sure that the idea of it specifically being a wrestling heel came very early in the process and was the idea for most of its development, and given the above regarding Fighting and Dark's respective associations, that would entail being Dark rather than Fighting being the plan for a long time too. * Another thing that was changed in translation is Night Slash, on a tangent from the above; its Japanese name translates to "Crossroad Killing", something that has nothing to do with literal darkness, because rather than that it's a reference to how some samurai in feudal Japan would test new swords by waiting at a crossroads, before striking down a passing commoner by surprise to see how well the sword cuts. It's a reference that'd be lost on most audiences outside of Japan, so it being changed in localization is understandable, but I think it's also one of the clearest pieces of evidence for how, at least initially, Dark-type didn't actually have anything to do with darkness. That, and literally every Dark move prior to Gen IV being physical, with IV adding *one* special Dark move, Dark Pulse, the first *actual* darkness-themed Dark move. (Ironically, though, prior to Gen IV each type was coded as either physical or special, with no moves within them deviating from that, and despite all offensive its moves at the time explicitly being physical actions, Dark as a type was coded as special. Meaning that for Gens II and III, moves like Beat Up and *Bite* were special moves, only for literally all of them to be made physical once those categories started being assigned to individual moves rather than types as a whole, which is kind of funny. My theory is that it was probably something like them looking at type concepts and deciding that "Evil" would be a weird thing to make physical, but that decision was made independently of looking at the actual *moves* in the type, because, well, like I said. Once they actually could define moves individually, literally all of those moves that had been special by default were made physical.)
@@jimmycoon3320 The two big ones I know about are a resemblance to samurai helmets ("kabuto"), and that a lot of super sentai heroes like Kamen Rider having costumes themed after them.
Torchic is so cute though😫 I remember picking it when I first played emerald, not knowing it'd evolve to a badass blaziken. It's definitely one of my fave lines!
Bulbasaur being the most popular Kanto starter and Torchic and Blaziken inexplicably being the least favorite Hoenn starters is a perfect example of how people like to be contrarians. People have begun to like Bulbasaur because it was unloved and people apparently don’t like Blaziken as much now because it’s been so iconic and popular. And that has literally nothing to do with their designs, that’s people making up their opinions based on the opinions of others. At least that’s what those results say to me. No hate if you genuinely like Bulbasur or dislike Torchic, I just thought that was kinda wild and just goes to show how volatile and crazy opinions can be sometimes haha
I totally agree, and to and extent the opposite is true as well. Many people love to call Pokémon like Charizard and Greninja bad, because of how much they have been loved. Although the polls show that this mindset isn’t nearly as prominent
Yep, that makes sense. I love Bulbasaur but it's true that people like to go with the more underrated Pokemon and give them some love for whatever reason.
I actually think it has something to do with how well the lines flow into each other, since adults probably care more about that than kids. The Bulbasaur line doesn't really have any out of place or awkward evolutions, whereas the Blaziken line has Combusken.
100% agree with u. Seeing that bulbasaur and torchic were incredibly low is just based on what everyone is now judging them based on how the Pokémon has been involved in the franchise. It shows how people really incorporate an unfair bias towards Pokémon just because of random things
Brionne is a Pokemon with the rare distinction of looking way cuter in the 3D model. When I first saw the Sugimori art of Brionne I thought it looked terrible, but the 3D model is so cute!
Yeah me too. I actually looked at the 3D model before the art and thought it was adorable. Then I looked at the art and thought it's eye's would steal my soul.
hoenn did it better, it was one of the few games I was truly indecisive about which starter, sinno is good but i didnt really like piplup for some reason.
Gen 4 is a very underrated generation. It overhaled moves into physical and special, which make a lot pokemons viable (prior to gen 4, pokemon like Sneasel is just unusable because it's stab moves are all special while sneasel has bad special attack). It also did a great job in giving evolution to past-gen pokemons that deserve an evolution, like tangrowth, gliscor, electivire, weavile, roserade, Mamoswine, Dusknoir... it just has great designs very consistently with only a few exceptions like Rhyperior. In contrast, half of gen 5 have designs that are just weird.
@@TheSleepyWarlord yeah. Going from gen 4 to 5 was a culture shock for me. Choosing a starter for gen 4 was the most difficult because I felt they were all amazing. Gen 5 was also a difficult decision because I didn't want either of the starters. I felt they were all terrible.
I get that Meganium isn't strong in battle, but I really loved its design and concept. A little Brachiosaurus dinosaur who's friendly and reliable. It'll always be my favourite Gen 2 starter.
I was shocked he got last, i thought Torterra's design was decent and Infernape was ok but Empoleon had this regal look to it and such a cool type with steel/water. He was just so hard to take out, he was my fav of gen 4
its an emperor penguin with blades for arms that occurs naturally in nature so it can navigate harsh ice terrain as shown in Pokémon ranger. it is absolutely an amazing starter and my favorite
I love Primarina design. It looks elegant and graceful compared to anything we had before from the final starter evaluations. Decidueye looks cool but I'll go with Primarina for being unique.
As a 60% tomboy 40% feminine (I'd say?) person, I almost love them both equally but Decidueye feels more in-line with the theme of fighting (the theme of fighting is obviously necessary for this series)
@@chrisiguess2867 really? Cause I think infernape, Incineroar and Greninja doesn't look gender neutral yet they remain popular. I like primarina's design but we just have to accept that what we like doesn't necessarily mean others will like it as well
I love fennekin and it’s line I thought a psychic fire type was a really cool way to break the fire fighting chain and the idea of making it a firefox was really well executed I think the reason why fennekins line didn’t get much credit is because of the stick he gets in the later two evolutions
In generation 4 earthquake was OP so Torterra naturally learning the move was BIG, and fire types were rarer than legendary pokemon so Infernape was also a great choice for team balance. I'm not surprised that Empoleon came in last in those polls.
Playing BDSP with my fave, Turtwig, this checks out. Torterra still slaps, but considering they buffed a lot of leaders he did get nerfed overall. He is pretty useless now vs. Cynthia. Primarily because of Milotic's buffs, unless maybe you get Wood hammer relearned.
I think it is interesting that when it comes to character design, the frogs, snakes, lizards -- things that are cold-blooded, and presumably less-likeable than a mammal or something cute and cuddly, tend to be very loved character designs. You can make them exceptionally quirky, stupid cute, cold and collected, or scary and powerful looking, and they tend to be received well. Sobble's evolution seems to be the only outlier in the list in terms of popularity.
Thinking about it, yeah the reptiles get a lot of love (except sobble line) you right. Interesting. Probably cause the OG 3 are reptilian so there's some unconcious familiarity with that in starters i guess as well (if a player has been following since kanto in any media)
Primarina is overhated man, I guess it's "girlyness" distracts people from its awesome fluid design. Gen 7 has my faviorite starters overall but I pick popplio every time
I played through Sun and Moon and IS and UM so many times. My playthrough if UM I used Popplio and named her Normandie after a old Fremch ocean liner said to be the most beautiful ship ever to sail the seas. I thought it was fitting. Anyway, she was just amazing and I really loved her.
“Oh oohohoOH GuRR aNothER FiGHTINg fuRRy PiG” ok but have you seen the guy’s reckless boosted flare blitz like- 😳 Serperior is cool, leaf storm contrary is just mm! Oshawatts line is adorable but I don’t understand why everyone says it’s underrated? Clearly my boi tepig needs the love he deserves!
Team Tepig and Delphox here lmao Tepig is just adorable and is my favorite first stage starter. I feel rlly bad that it's opinion got weighed down by it's meh evolutions. And I think Delphox is neat, mainly due to nostalgia tho. Delphox grew on me haha. In the end tho, popular opinions don't matter, keep on loving what you love.
Honestly imho I really hated Inteleon’s design when it was first revealed but I think the spy/James Bond inspiration for a Pokémon is really cool and it’s design grew on me
Wait.... there are people who don't finish the game with their starters? I always finished my game with my starter even when I don't particularly like any of them ( Gen 5 ahem )
@@evaporationofsanityex4383 lord not my fav gen but yea I don’t like the 5th gen starters think the water one is the best and its do weird to know people don’t finish it with their starters but hey to each its own
i think that it a little cold hearted to box your starter(well box as to,"ill never use you"box) they're your first pokemon and your best buddy in playthroughs,so i never box them
The Snivy line are probably the only starter designs I didn't like initially that grew on me significantly years later. My opinion on starters rarely changes much but this has been an exception. Contrary is also nice of course but if I didn't like the design I wouldn't use it even with that.
Snivy was my favourite Pokemon back when gen 5 news was coming out. A grass snake was just such a good idea and I always wanted it. Then they went above and beyond and executed it pretty much perfectly, outside of maybe Serperior's moveset, but the design was perfect.
Blaziken has always been my favourite Pokemon since it's early introduction in the anime. Easily one of the most nostalgic moments from my childhood was seeing this unknown badass appear in the Johto League, and that battle against Ash was so cool, the design, the voice, the blaze kick. One moment in that battle I'll never forget was when Bayleef used vine whip, Blaziken grabs the vines with one hand, and then casually pulls in Bayleef, and then also later Blaze Kicks Ash's Charizard in the face. I'll never forget how emotional I got when May's Combusken FINALLY evolved, seeing someone from the group own a Blaziken was amazing... even if it was for only 2 episodes. As soon as the Gen 3 games came out, I grabbed Pokemon Ruby and chose Torchic without any hesitation. Blaziken is just such a fun Pokemon to use, so many awesome moves to run on it, one of my favourite Pokemon in game to this day is the event Blazikenite holding Blaziken (technically Torchic) I got in Pokemon X. My Mega Blaziken was Adamant nature, with Flare Blitz, Brave Bird, Close Combat and Thunder Punch, along with the Speed Boost ability, my Blaziken pretty much one shot everyone without even taking hits itself, I love Blaziken so much! 🔥
I also really love Blaziken. Harrison's was an absolute beast and was so cool. May's Blaziken was also pretty sweet in it's progression helping May become a top coordinator. Blaziken has always been a top tier Pokemon to me. Torchic was my first Pokemon and this fire chicken will always have a place in my heart.
Thanks for saying that because he is easily my favorite starter ever! Very surprised that the majority likes Sceptile. I personally think Sceptile is very average
Can I say this now, I LOVE SNIVY. Bcs of nostalgia being the fact that the first pokemon game I played was pokepark2 which the starters you played as we're Oshawott, Snivy, and Tepig. Plus playing as Pikachu as well. This is still my favorite pokemon game and I always would play as Snivy even when it hindered me. That being said when playing Pokemon games where I get to choose between any of the starters I choose Snivy without question.
Snivy is a no-brainer for me. It's not only the only good starter design of Gen V, it also outclasses many of the other gen's starters. That line is just Serperior! 👍
For middle evolutions I think the "loveable awkwardness," even if people say they like it, isn't actually a popular feature. I think the biggest thing is that they are a good pokemon in their own right (cute, cool, interesting) and: an element of suspense/tension/potential in the design that makes you excited for the resolution of the final evolution.
Yeah the awkward designs is definitely a feature I don't like. In a lot of cases they had cute first forms but then the second forms completely ruin them. Marshtomp, Pignite, Quilladin and Brionne are the ones that suffer most from this imo. In some cases the 3rd forms turn out great after this e.g. Primarina and Swampert, but others they're just as bad e.g. Emboar and Chesnaught. Or at least that's my opinion. I much prefer cool 2nd forms like Grovyle, Servine, Monferno etc.
@@CalebNewbery I agree with you, exept for chesnaught, I still think it's an exellent design killed by both greninja and quiladin. Personally I find the colour pallet fantastic, and the proportion are completely deliberate, they put empathis on the arms, to make them and the pokemon appear bigger and therefore more powerful. It just has this gentle giant vibe, it looks wise. I also like emboar but mostly because of nostalgia.
@@CalebNewbery Oh ! And also, I would ad primplup, combusken, croconaw, dartrix and all of gen 8 in the bad design category, just non of them look good.
@@artimist0315 Yeah those ones do suffer from it too, but the ones I listed are the ones I think are the worst for it. The others aren't quite as bad. The only gen 8 second form I like is Raboot.
@@artimist0315 chesnaught is definitely the strangest starter ever, it is totally disproportionate, has a strange head/face, and it looks like it has spine problems, rillaboom is the chesnaught with actually cool and good design
Goodness! So much of analysis. I'll have to watch this video 5-6 more times to get a complete grasp of it. Great job Ron! Great job everyone who participated in the poll.
No bad job, do the math, Venusaur line should be #1 or hell #2 decent how did Bulba and Ivy rank #1 and Venusaur #2 yet somehow overall is #3? Especially when he beat Squit line all the time and stomp 2 of 3 charmaner lines?
I’m actually really glad you addressed the difference between Rillabooms Sugimori art and in-game model, because there are some pokémon that I would have loved more if they had made a better in-game model. Pokemon like Noivern, Greninja, and Decidueye just look akward to me.
I especially agree with this for rillaboom. Personally, the drum just makes them look awkward and really detracts from their likeability to me. In its sugimori art, rillaboom is by far and away the best gen 8 starter, but the in game models makes it on the same level as cinderace for me
Meanwhile, I feel some other Pokemon get the opposite effect, like Kommo-o, which I think has a really awkwardly angled 2D image, but looks better when seen in 3D.
@@hankboog462 oh my goodness, you are so correct. Cindaquill's line suffered the worst from the 3D transition by a *massive* margin, it's so sad. At least there's hope from the legends arceus trailor
I always liked the fennekin and chespin lines since the start, I always ignored the frokie line when the games first came out. I was really surprised how popular greninja got over the years
I mean, it's a ninja frog, which has a lot of history behind it in Japan (and among weebs, as a result), and its stats and typing are solid. Plus, with those stats, Protean becomes freaking _broken,_ making Gren one of the strongest non-legendary Pokémon in existence. It being popular was an inevitability.
Yeah when they were first revealed o recall fennekin being THE ONE or closest to it for the fanbase (i was always about chespin though) and Froakie being the relative least favorite. The second the final evos get shown roles instantly flipped. Then there's greninja's huge marketing push and well yeah lol
Probably because in comparison to the other 2, the evolution line has the largest jump in designs. Had they given Chespin like a little Chestnut helmet or something in order to get people to think "Oh hes a little Knight!" I think he wouldve gone over a lot better. I do agree that Chestnaught looks cool, but I think its prevolitons do too little to set the tone.
Chesnaught is a pretty cool starter pokemon. While I choose Froakie´s line (and my second favorite from kalos is Fennekin´s line) I think that Chesnaught also has a great design. Maybe it got a bit overshadowed by the other two for being the only one that looks more different to its first stage. But I think Chesnaught would be way more popular if its shiny colors were the regular colors. It looks more similar to chespin, the colors look great and the shiny would be like a white knight if the regular colors where used as the shiny version.
For me it's the colours. If Chesnaught had it's shiny as it's regular design to fit in more with the line, I think it would be much more popular. The colours they chose for the regular design just don't fit the Chespin line very well.
Agree, I liked Chesnaught a lot, and Chespin was probably my favourite first stage in gen 6, only Quilladin sticks out like a sore thumb. I feel like the line would be much more appreciated if Quilladin was lovable and a good transition.
I'd say it was the typing for me. I get why they made it Fighting, but a large part of its concept is defense and shields, so Steel, or possibly Rock would have made it more appealing.
I was sad to see the Primarina line got so much hate. I really love the pokemon: I don’t mind “girly” designs, and I rather like the beautiful singer/performer theme it had going on. I even ended up shiny hunting for it, and have my own shiny of it.
If Popplio wasn't under Rowlet's Shadow it would be definitely more popular... I mean Decidueye ended up getting more votes than Greninja (and I get why, I definitely think it is the coolest starter)
My Problem is that i love popplios dorky clown-like design but it evolves from a dorky circus seal into a freaking mermaid which disappointed me. I was here for a funny but loveable pokemon and got a pokemon that maxed out beauty...
Infernape will always be my favorite. The design is so clean, and it is so strong. It was also the first pokemon I got to level 100. Overall I think sinnoh has the coolest starters.
Thyphlosion (cyndaquil) was my very first starter ever which I loved then Infernape then Blaziken :D. Always loved the fire types more than the others the recent gen starters are pretty crap tho imo
reminder: these results shouldn’t affect how much you like a Pokémon. i personally love Meganium, Primarina, and Emboar, and that’s fine! like the Pokémon you like
@@eln6928 I think the problem came with the comparison to Venusaur, who most people would agree is just straight up better. However, that shouldn’t stop you from liking it :)
The Mudkip line will always be my favorite but I love how equal the Hoenn starters are. I never heard anything negative about them for 18 years exept for the middle evolutions.
the Popplio line has always been a favorite of mine since i picked him up in ultra moon, i named him Hideri after the character from the anime "Blend S" and that character cross-dresses and wanted to be an idol, which fits with the whole "male brionne" aesthetic, he is still one of my most memorable starters of recent memory, Popplio protection squad!!!!
Meganium is actually my favorite Pokémon. Chikorita was my first starter I ever picked in crystal as a kid because I thought it was cute. And it’s really not THAT bad it’s just because the gyms in johto. It gets a lot better when you get into kanto
I’m not the biggest fan of Delphox, only because I like how Braixen looks way better. I always thought that the dress thing on Delphox was too big and awkward.
I was team Fenniken before the final evolutions came out. Froakie was my second choice from the beginning. I hate the fact that Delphox looks like a furry. We have enough furry looking Pokémon
I (personally) dislike Snivy from how snobby and powerful it was portrayed in the Anime, and even though I really like design of its final evolution, I probably wouldn't pick it if I ever played the games. I see where you are coming from though!
@@DigitalDipper I chose oshiwatt, tried snivy, it only let me down, it's a shitty sweeper with all the disadvantages of being grass, But I like it's design the best, it would be great for setting up advantageous situations , but I normally use my starter as an ace.
@@DigitalDipper I had Snivy as my starter the first time playing the game, and it was a typical grass type with not too many perks. But for some reason, when it became a Serperior, YO, I have never ever struggled LESS in my life against any Pokémon in any Pokémon game eveeer. She would randomly dodge moves like every other turn, just insanely frequently, and could 1-2 hit KO anything. She was a sweeper to say the least. I got through practically the whole game with my Serperior. There were many times I gave 0 shits about Fire types and never switched her out of battle, which I would never do with any other grass type.
The entire grookey line has amazing designs, looking like different kinds of apes, and going from 1 drumstick, to 2, to a full kit. I just love the designs.
I know right, I love the second evolution of the grookey line, I can’t believe other people don’t. He’s so huggable (I’m one of the weird people that prefer cute Pokémon for all evolutions though)
Well, it’s obvious that cinderace is the best starter pokemon. Because cinderace is my favorite starter pokemon. It’s so awesome. And cinderace is the starter pokemon I used in Pokémon Sword and Shield and cinderace have a cool design and cinderace is strong and menacing, yet cute in too. Don’t hate cinderace because it’s amazing and cinderace is a fire type pokemon and cinderace is a humanoid rabbit that plays soccer and uses the fires as a soccer ball, how cool right ?
I never pick fire types anymore since they are almost ALWAYS half fighting type, it's like you just expect it by now, lol Let's be honest, inceneroar and cinderace are basically fighting types without the fighting type label I think they knew people were tired of it so they just slapped dark on one and made the other pure fire even though we all know what game freak wanted to make them lol
I personally don't care all that much about typing, so long as the design is good I love them. They could all be fire fighting for all I care and I'd still love them.
Incineroar and Cinderace are also the worst offenders for bad final evolutions of great starter Pokémon, imo. Litten is one of the cutest starters ever and having it grow into a big, fire breathing lion would've been so cool (unlike the underwhelming Pyroar from Gen VI), but then it turns into a freaking *cereals mascot* and Scorbunny becomes a furry. I can't see either of them as animals, they just look like humans in costumes and nobody can change my mind! The only worse starter is Chesnaught though, because while I liked it's pre-evolutions most within its gen, the final form just doesn't fit in with the rest at all! It looks like a Digimon that my brother had a plushie of. Don't know its name though, I never cared about Digimon at all, I just saw it as a cheap knockoff, So looking like a Digimon is the worst thing that can happen to a Pokémon! Chesnaught might not be as outright hideous as some other Pokémons (eg: Incineroar, Jynx, Garbador), but literally no other Pokémon makes me feel like it comes from the wrong franchise!
I'm really surprised by Serperior's results in this poll, wow. My favorite alongside Venusaur and Greninja. They gave it an actual personality and theme, which is something you can't say about every starter? What exactly is Samurott's personality, for example? Many of them are a bit bland despite having okay looks, but it's definitely not the case with Serperior. Also, in terms of design, Serperior's design fits its personality perfectly, it's supposed to be like royalty, thus the details in the patterns and colors. To add to that, it has got a pretty cool shiny, which never hurts. Plus, it is way above average for the starters in terms of combat viability. Since many of the starters have evenly spread stats so as to be viable in your playthroughs, not many of them tend to shine in competitive, but Serperior back in gen 5 or 6 it was actually OU tier in the Smogon tier list, thanks to its Hidden Ability Contrary, which reverses stat changes. Use Leaf Storm with Serperior, and its SpA goes up 2 levels. Pair that with its highest stat, speed, and you've got yourself a very good sweeper. It lacks a little bit in type coverage due to a lackluster movepool, but no one is perfect. Give Serperior some love, people :(
Precisely my thoughts as well! Samurot always felt like it was straight out of left field for a final evolution, the quadrupedal design just ruins it for me. On the other hand, I'm always confused by Inteleon being disliked. I get why the gen 8 final forms are relatively unpopular, but is Inteleon really any worse than Cinderace? At least Inteleon's skinny-ness cuts back on the human feel it gives off, Cinderace's humanlike proportions are just plain creepy. Thoughts?
In a meta saturated with Talonflame, Volcarona and Heatran, Serperior gets hard walled. And there's Mega Pinsir and Mega Char Y. It may have it's spot in the OU tier in gen V but it is too much of an easy counter. I'd rather slap a choice band on my Reckless Emboar at least any potential switch ins will not be happy taking a hit from EMBEAST.
Serperior will always have a special place in the pokemon corner of my heart, for single-handedly restoring my faith in the grass type. Grass just had too many weaknesses and not enough advantages; Venusaur's poison type was a liability and it was too hard to use in a game where everything I tried to use it on had a potential counter for it (water had ice, ground/rock had STAB ground) and psychic types were dominant; Meganium tried to be a tank without the defenses for it, making it just a slow HP sponge; Sceptile couldn't take a hit any better than Meganium and had no uses the rest of the team couldn't cover; I hear Torterra was better, but by then I'd become disillusioned and didn't have time for multiple playthroughs (or trading all starters) any more, so I went with the steel type I'd never seen in a starter before (which, ironically, became the only thing on its team to survive Cynthia's Garchomp, Earthquake and all). I'd grown comfortable with the idea that I'd never need to consider the grass types (especially the starters) again. Serperior though. For various reasons I liked its designs the most of its gen (and, no disrespect intended, disliked the other two) so I consigned myself to giving the grass starter just one more go. ...That critter became the lynchpin of my team. Giga Drain, Toxic, Leech Seed, Coil. It was a slow, inevitable doom for my enemies that just. Would. Not. Die. I soloed the Flying Gym with Serperior just to prove a point. Good times.
Totally agree. My Serperior was an absolute badass. I don’t know if all Serperiors are designed to do this in the game, or if this was just mine’s given nature, but she would dodge like every other move! Just randomly! I demolished everything and anything with my Serperior, she was awesome. Easily one of the best starters I’ve ever had in Pokémon games, I rarely ever switched her out. I fought fire types w zero f’s given lol.
I lost hope with servine but just continued anyway but when it evolved into a serperior, holy crap, it became one of my ace with leaf blade, leech seed, coil and giga drain, being a speedy sweeper when it's time to sweep and being a slow but inevitable doom when in a pinch. Simply a majestic and great grass starter
Venusaur is one of the best starter though, not better than gren, infernape Incineroar. But better than all the others, because of it's ability and offensive typing
I'm still a huge fan of Ivysaur. It's so badass and cute at the same time, has perfect coloring and just a great design. Also it's a perfect transition between Bulbasaur and Venusaur. PS: I feel bad for Chikorita, it is so adorable.
It pains me to see my 3 favourites in low tiers: Emboar, Primarina and Inteleon. Emboar can hit like a truck while also having access to a huge range of moves, and an incredible shiny to top it off. I love the other two's concepts, with Primarina harnessing song and voice based powers (like the thing it's based off of) and Inteleon being a james bond style assassin, and don't even get me started on the incredible G-max form...
@@sonic-bb personaly i hate primarinas shiny, the blonde hair gives me that uncanny valey vibes. Unlikes normal primarina who is my 2nd favorite pokemon ever.
The starters I ended up choosing on my first go through each generation were: Charizard Typhloshion Swampert Infernape Emboar Chesnaught Decidueye Cinderace Quite the broad stroke in terms of popularity.
Venusaur Typhlosion Sceptile Infernape (Torterra is my favorite, but I was playing a Nuzlocke for my first Gen 4 playthrough, so I had to pick one of the only Fire types in the game) Samurott Chesnaught Decideuye Inteleon
I'm surprised by how poorly Chesnaught fared. I'd like to see similar polls on other staple Pokemon types, like Early Birds/Bugs/Mammals, Pika-clones, Pseudolegends, Legendary trios, etc.
Not trying to be mean but how are you surprised? Chesnaught is unanimously agreed upon to be hideous. Dont get me wrong if you like him that's fine, I just havent seen more than 1 person who actually likes him.
@@MatthewCJoy I liked Chesnaught but only because I had a tcg card that was shiny and gold and looked super badass. When I saw it in the anime I was quite disappointed, but I still kinda like him!
I mean I'd say Empoleon is a 10/10 design. His beak is a Trident CROWN horn! That's awesome. His flippers have steel armor on them. He's regal and elegant without being too gaudy and over the top. He oozes coolness and attitude. like I said, 10/10 on design for me. Plus Emperor penguins are just the coolest animals
I like delphox bc its a fennec im algerian and algerias national animal is the fennec Although its not my fav but its my 3rd fav after greninja and charizard
Tbh I picked snivy in white and oshawott in black 2 I do remember a lot of people picking the water and grass since their hate of fire fighting for the third time lol
I am biased with nostalgia, but I adore Litten, because thinking of it as a second house cat for the small family in the game is fun, and it’s evolutions bring me memories of spamming Malicious Moonsault, saying the phrase out loud while the text rolled in with a bit of an accent from my country.
emboar wasn't Just hurt by being the 3rd fire fighting type in a row. Its speed Killed almost all chance of it being good. bad def and low speed made it hard to be useful
@@lewey0356 it might have changed since or you may mean design wise. But people were upset with it back in the day. in my circle at least, doesn't matter how good it looks if nearly everything out speeds and kills it
Exactly this. Samurott at least has Aqua Jet, and only 2 weaknesses. Serperior is pure Grass, but it has its speed going for it + Contrary (for those who bother with breeding, like I do). Although Emboar is my favourite starter + favourite Pokémon ever, and I'll always choose Tepig over Snivy / Oshawott, there's no denying that his stats + level-up moves are horrible. There's no balance whatsoever. 65 in both defenses AND speed is awful. Hammer Arm lowers your already bad speed, while Flame Charge can't possibly bring it up fast enough. The Boar is cursed. :C At least he hits like a truck, and (for all the good it does him) has the highest HP stat of all starter Pokémon and used to have the highest Atk stat of all starter Pokémon until Rillaboom came along. While very unique, he's just no good. :(
Even for people who don't pay attention to things like battle prowess, it's impossible not to notice that Meganium is a Venusaur clone, without none of the things that makes Venusaur successful. It's not even useful -- it cannot learn Sleep Powder at all and Leech Seed only through breeding. It has good defenses, but its special attack is subpar, thus making its Grass moves weak, and no same-type attack bonus from Poison moves since it's not Poison type. It doesn't even get a relevant hidden ability, like Natural Cure. It was doomed to fail from the get-go, and Game Freak has never cared to fix it.
Feraligater definitely one of the best starters, has a great hidden ability in sheer force and has access to dragon dance, a good phy water movie in liquidation and 2 good coverage moves in ice punch and earthquake
@@sknnick_6116 they could have those stats and still look great... Blaziken is a good example... Great ability great stats and still looks amazing... Well a lot of the megas don't look that great but since swampert is my favorite the amount of disappointment is larger

Honestly, I really love Emboar mainly because Tepic was my first ever Pokémon. I also think it’s kind of funny that he ended up having a bashful nature. He may look threatening but he’s really just a gentle giant.
yess, Hes just a big guy that lives for food, tepig was my first too, and i dont understand how other people dont like him and his evolution line, like who wouldnt like a wrestling fire breathing pig that lives to eat food
My favorite starter is Swampert but i equally love everyone. I feel like Chestnaught didn't catch the fame because of Quilladin's disappointment. I feel like Chestnaught's knight esque design was executed really well but Quilladin was a massive disappointment making people lose hype for our bastion himself.
Hard same. I was sold from the get-go when Chespin was revealed- the first mammal Grass starter, with a *really* solid design! But man, Quilladin was hard to justify. I knew the third stage would pull through, though, so I stuck though and was rewarded! My only problem with Chesnaught is that his "helmet" is bland, but aside from that, he's actually one of my favorites among all starters!
Chesnaught is my 2nd fav grass starter and my 15th fav pokemon it holds a special place in my heart as the first starter final evo I knew Metagross Also holds a very special place as the first pokemon I ever knew in fact the ten first pokemon I knew all are top 20 and no Pikachu was not the first pokemon I actually found out about it much much later on
I'm a Chespin guy but grew to live quilladin quickly. However, yeah compared to its younger and older bro, it's still my least favorite. I think the line just isn't shown off much as well outside of Chespin is another problem.
Nah it isn’t bias, it is underrated for no ficking reason besides being stuck with the other 2 gen 5 starters, yet somehow the other 2 are the only ones getting pity points
Serperior is my favorite pokemon and I got surprised it lost to samurott since people were always putting snivy's line on a pedestal compared to the other two unova starters
@@bigmonke3348 same it’s such a good line serperior is one of my all time favs and the entire line is incredible arguable better than the sceptile lines choosing between those lines would hurt tbh
Personally I don’t think that Delphox or Chesnaught are unpopular it’s just that Greninja is so popular it makes the others seem unpopular because it doesn’t really seem like you tested each starter as an individual.
More so that Gren overshadows the two. In a vacuum Braixen and Delphox, aswell as Quiladin and Chestnought , are fantastic designs. I more so think Chespin and Fennekin stray too far from GFs visions. They wanted, from what we can tell, a magical witch/wizard type mon, a stoic knight , and a sneaky, shadowy trickster like ninja. Chespin and Fennekin dont fit their themes at all and Froakie seems to be the only one who actually fits the idea wrought for it.
The other part of it is that the big reason Greninja overshadowed the other two is not necessarily because it has a better design than them, but because Game Freak decided to make it the next Lucario and hype the fucker up to death and market the hell out of it. It got a god tier Hidden Ability in Protean which made it an immediate competitive superstar in Smogon OU and in VGC, it got to be in Smash, it was Ash's superstar ace mon in the beloved (and awesome) XY anime and even got a special form in Ash-Greninja, which showed up later in game in Sun and Moon, and it also gets to be in Unite. It was clearly the favorite of Game Freak's marketing team and they went full force in marketing it which pretty much made it the most popular Pokemon of all time. Delphox and Chesnaught aren't so much disliked imo as much as they are standing alongside a Pokemon who is more or less a mascot of the franchise at this point.
@@David-gj9qr they might find them creepy or something... 🤷🏻 Others believe they look like Digimon. Personally, I don't mind that and I can easily say that some of my favourite pokémon are humanoids.
I really like emboar I always have. He was my first starter when I played Pokémon black so that maybe why. And the popplio line grew on me after using one in a replay of ultra sun.
Thats because Inteleon is the best starter to use in Sword, based on the type specialists. Also fun fact: Inteleon is the most popular Galar mon in Japan (And that is the only popularity poll TPC and Gamefreak care about).
Meganium is probably my favourite but it's probably from nostalgia, me and my uncle used to play it when I was younger and he picked it and named it Taylor. So, it's the one I always pick
i remember when delphox came out i was so dissatisfied, i was expecting so much more from the final evo of fennekin, however i still pick them, i picked mine and it was a girl and i named it fox, it carried me through my first y play though and it’s one of my favourites to this day.
My two favorite fully evolved starters have always been Infernape and Swampert. I didn’t play the generation with Greninja, but based on design alone I’d put it in my top 3
I honestly never expected Samurott to be so loved being that I always saw more people who hate him just for being a quadruped but he finally gets the attention he deserves Samurott 4 the win
I’m actually a little surprised about how disliked Delphox is I thought it was good design and overall pretty sweet being a fire and physic type it was really unique in that aspect
Same. And it was the first Pokemon to break the fire/fighting starter chain if I'm not mistaken. Not only that but, it was the first starer line I followed where I didn't know what it evolution would be. Maybe that's why I have a fondness for gen 6 as a whole. But that starter line is probably one my favorite pokemon since I like foxes
@@Twinklethefox9022 I agree with you guys so much! It's typing was pretty unique, and it _was_ the first one to deviate from the fire-fighting status quo, so it's a shame that people hated Delphox because Gamefreak went right back to that sort of design with the subsequent starters. Incineroar could totally be fighting instead of dark, and Cinderace is still in the realm of being athletic.
Blastoise Typhsion and Sceptile were all my first starter choices for each gen i always liked that this was kind of a coincidence of different starter types and that if i could have a trio of starters for a journey these would be my picks.
I like unique typings. I was surprised blaizken was so low on the list. I remember him being the favorite back then like you said. Typhlosion is one of my favorite designes but i don't see him as one of my favorites just because his typing and look is just too plain. Actually i feel a lot of the gen 2 designs are plain. Awesome video
Seeing Decidueye and Sceptile up at the top reminds me of how cool and fun to play they were in Pokken. Here's hoping they make it into Unite. (or, Arceus willing, Pokken 2)

Charmander losing a favorite starter contest is... Surprising.
I mean, it is still among the top five popular Pokemon along with Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Mewtwo. But it took 6 gens before it became truly viable. Honestly, it's typing sucks. Also, it's popularity as of late has taken a big hit from over-exposure.

Incineroar's design looks like someone was already 90% done and someone came up to the designer and said it better not be a fire fighting type
lmao YES
"His signature move physical fightin-'
*Visible glare*
"DARK, physical DARK move that's based on a fighting move, who is also based on fighting....but is dark.."
(Though, as with many villains and antiheroes in fiction, it's not uncommon for heels to actually just be outright popular, despite or even *because* of their rough side, and while in the ring they're intentionally dicks a good amount are known to be among the nicest wrestlers to interact with as a fan, especially kids; this is where Incineroar's personality traits like not beating up foes it sees as too weak or injured to be a good fight and secretly enjoying the admiration of children and young Pokemon come from.)
Hence the Dark type; Dark, despite what most people thing, isn't about literal darkness for the most part but about dirty tricks, underhanded moves, and the like, which is why most Dark moves are *physical* rather than special and consist of things like Sucker Punch and Fake Tears. Heck, its original Japanese name, "Aku", means "evil", not "dark". (This is also why it's weak to Fighting and Bug; those types have heroic associations in Japan due to stuff like super sentai shows, so they're good against what's basically the villain type.)*
Incineroar's characterization and design all really, really play into the heel thing, and it's extremely obvious once you know about it.
@@danewardlocke9014 why are bugs considered heroic in japan
@@jimmycoon3320 The two big ones I know about are a resemblance to samurai helmets ("kabuto"), and that a lot of super sentai heroes like Kamen Rider having costumes themed after them.

My childhood memories, without internet, and play pokemon Ruby, the first time I saw torchic I just don't see the other 2 is cute enough as torchic.
Blacken was too humanoid for me. It was cool at first but one of my least favorite pokemon now.
Hellooo hoops
It shows how people really incorporate an unfair bias towards Pokémon just because of random things

hoenn did it better, it was one of the few games I was truly indecisive about which starter, sinno is good but i didnt really like piplup for some reason.

Amd I'll choose Oshawott among any starters
Snivy was the first grass starter I ever chose lol usually I go for fire types but when I saw snivy I had to chose it
SAME OMG I LOVE SNIVY!

Great job Ron! Great job everyone who participated in the poll.
Thank you I participated in the poll too

No bad job, do the math, Venusaur line should be #1 or hell #2 decent how did Bulba and Ivy rank #1 and Venusaur #2 yet somehow overall is #3? Especially when he beat Squit line all the time and stomp 2 of 3 charmaner lines?
@@mrjghostbell3807 what? the other starters were 10% lower in the first two, venasaur got clapped by charizard in the final poll by double.
In its sugimori art, rillaboom is by far and away the best gen 8 starter, but the in game models makes it on the same level as cinderace for me
Rillaboom is decent without the drum, i fucking hate that every newgen starters have forced human jobs.

If u ever seen the Pokemon anime then only u came to know why greninja is one of the most popular Pokemon ever
Greninja was once voted to be the most popular Pokemon. I don't remember the year.
Yeah when they were first revealed o recall fennekin being THE ONE or closest to it for the fanbase (i was always about chespin though) and Froakie being the relative least favorite. The second the final evos get shown roles instantly flipped. Then there's greninja's huge marketing push and well yeah lol
@@MagillanicaLouM Man I remember the greninja push.
i don't understand why so many people dislike chesnaught. sure, quilladin looks pretty bad, but i think chesnaught is really cool.
Popplio itself IS my favorite pokemon, but I'm not the biggest fans of brionne and primarina.
If Popplio wasn't under Rowlet's Shadow it would be definitely more popular... I mean Decidueye ended up getting more votes than Greninja (and I get why, I definitely think it is the coolest starter)

I love Snivy’s evolution line! How unfortunate it didnt end up ranking so well
I (personally) dislike Snivy from how snobby and powerful it was portrayed in the Anime, and even though I really like design of its final evolution, I probably wouldn't pick it if I ever played the games.

@Heramb Sharma hidden power 😂😂
I never pick fire types anymore since they are almost ALWAYS half fighting type, it's like you just expect it by now, lol Let's be honest, inceneroar and cinderace are basically fighting types without the fighting type label
I think they knew people were tired of it so they just slapped dark on one and made the other pure fire even though we all know what game freak wanted to make them lol
lol agreed
I personally don't care all that much about typing, so long as the design is good I love them. They could all be fire fighting for all I care and I'd still love them.
@@CalebNewbery lol but you gotta admit that it's funny that they really did just slap dark on one and decided not to put a 2nd typing on another xD
@@LRM12o8 Chesnaught should get a regional variant with an electric-imbued giant hammer.
Thoughts?
It was better before it lost it’s hands 😔
I think Samurott is supposed to be brave and fierce, like a samurai.
@@shoopydoopy6062 you do know that serperior has hands right? it's just tuck behind his back.

It's not even useful -- it cannot learn Sleep Powder at all and Leech Seed only through breeding. It has good defenses, but its special attack is subpar, thus making its Grass moves weak, and no same-type attack bonus from Poison moves since it's not Poison type. @@Nazoto I guess they had to have to sacrifice design for legendary-like stats
@@sknnick_6116 they could have those stats and still look great... Blaziken is a good example... Great ability great stats and still looks amazing... Well a lot of the megas don't look that great but since swampert is my favorite the amount of disappointment is larger
@@Nazoto I know that, I'm not saying all megas looks bad have my favorite Salamence as a proof. but yeah some like Swampert and Garchomp looks better in non-mega imo.
I think this is probably the most interesting video you have released to date. Incredibly cool to see these stats
Sceptile is just fun to use. I used it a lot in the Battle Tower when I got a shiny one in an egg. Leaf Storm Choice Specs is really fun!
I love Emboar's design and if the types were different it would get so much more love
My only problem with Chesnaught is that his "helmet" is bland, but aside from that, he's actually one of my favorites among all starters!
chesnaught is just strange
Chesnaught is my 2nd fav grass starter and my 15th fav pokemon it holds a special place in my heart as the first starter final evo I knew Metagross Also holds a very special place as the first pokemon I ever knew in fact the ten first pokemon I knew all are top 20 and no Pikachu was not the first pokemon I actually found out about it much much later on
I'm a Chespin guy but grew to live quilladin quickly. However, yeah compared to its younger and older bro, it's still my least favorite. I think the line just isn't shown off much as well outside of Chespin is another problem.
Poor Chikorita! 🍃
I loved her in the anime, she had so much personality.
yeah, but these are mainly based on design & stats, chikorita is pretty low and some people feel like its evos are lazy
@@Reflecterr I find beauty in simplicity. I do not think everything has to be overdesigned.
I love the Chikorita line so much, I used it in my Soul Silver nuzlocke and it was great
@@Reflecterr tbh i feel like all 2nd gen starters were underdesigned especially cyndaquil's evo line
@@pokemontas8025 most people don’t choose it for that reason
Decidueye is my favorite Pokémon, so I’m glad they came out on top
I feel like snivy’s line should have been above average, but it is my favorite starter so I’m very biased.
Nah it isn’t bias, it is underrated for no ficking reason besides being stuck with the other 2 gen 5 starters, yet somehow the other 2 are the only ones getting pity points
@@themarshian5124 exactly. If serperior was a gen 3 pokemon everyone would love it but it's sadly underrepresented even in the anime
Also why do blaziken and the cyndaquill line get so much love I don’t see it
Personally I don’t think that Delphox or Chesnaught are unpopular it’s just that Greninja is so popular it makes the others seem unpopular because it doesn’t really seem like you tested each starter as an individual.

@@scraftyisthebest1309 To True.
man, my first game was b/w and my starter was tepig. Idc what anyone says, he was the best boy.
This view is so much different than the Pokémon community I grew up with. Nice to see people appreciate things differently
i feel like i never really had a problem with pokemon looking "too humanoid"
Same
Yeap
And feminine. Kinda sad. I like primarina best 😅
Same, I don't understand why people have a problem with it
@@David-gj9qr they might find them creepy or something... 🤷🏻
Others believe they look like Digimon.
Personally, I don't mind that and I can easily say that some of my favourite pokémon are humanoids.
I really like emboar I always have. He was my first starter when I played Pokémon black so that maybe why. And the popplio line grew on me after using one in a replay of ultra sun.
Unpopular Opinion: After using one in Sword, Inteleon became my favorite Water Type.
I love using Inteleon too. It doesn't look as bad as people think, especially with 2d artwork. And it is a powerful special attacking sweeper too.
@@GoinGreninja Yeah i only saw him ugly in-game, but in artworks and anime i fell in love with this Pokémon.
@@Unknown-yg2fn Same!
Inteleon is pretty cool.
*Cries in Delphox, Primarina, and Inteleon*
Same, but replace Delphox with Chesnaught
Meh I don't like the other but primarina is one of my top 5 fav
Cries in Emboar.
Also cries in Delphox and Primarina.
My girls...
@Trainer498 I don't see why not.
"What makes a good starter pokemon"
Cute, adorable, feels absolutely over powered BEFORE the first gym, has a REALLY cool last evolution
Ah so treeko?
Piplups summary
feels really overpowered through the whole game: Infernape
@@diegobrando5800 yea you're goddamn right a last stage evolution would be op for drop kicking Barry's piplup
@Ali Gaming i hope youre joking😂 of course i meant all 3 evolutions
i remember when delphox came out i was so dissatisfied, i was expecting so much more from the final evo of fennekin, however i still pick them, i picked mine and it was a girl and i named it fox, it carried me through my first y play though and it’s one of my favourites to this day.
Honestly same! I get they were going for a fantasy theme for the gen 6 starters but I really liked the pop star aspect for braixen
How original
My two favorite fully evolved starters have always been Infernape and Swampert. I didn’t play the generation with Greninja, but based on design alone I’d put it in my top 3
"Samurott's opinion might be bias" and "I don't have to explain why Charizard is so high, right?" go together perfectly
I honestly never expected Samurott to be so loved being that I always saw more people who hate him just for being a quadruped but he finally gets the attention he deserves
Samurott 4 the win
Samurrot 4 tha wiiiiiin!
Easily my favourite water type starter line, down with the Samurott haters!!!
@@CalebNewbery PREACH!!
Quadrupeds are better
Should’ve had a secondary typing like fighting instead of emboar I reckon.
Me having Meganium as my favorite johto starter due to childhood: T-T
literally my favorite starter line :,(
SAME I WAS SO SAD
I think its because of Decidueye already being popular and Incineraor added in Smash, it did made the Gen 7 trio more normal to look at
Popplio line deserves better. Though that may be just me being salty lol, cause they are easily my favorite and Prima my favorite Pokemon
Empoleon is a truly amazing pokemon, and Piplup is the cutest Gen 4 starter
I’m actually a little surprised about how disliked Delphox is I thought it was good design and overall pretty sweet being a fire and physic type it was really unique in that aspect
Same. And it was the first Pokemon to break the fire/fighting starter chain if I'm not mistaken. Not only that but, it was the first starer line I followed where I didn't know what it evolution would be. Maybe that's why I have a fondness for gen 6 as a whole. But that starter line is probably one my favorite pokemon since I like foxes
Awww ty
@@Twinklethefox9022 I agree with you guys so much! It's typing was pretty unique, and it _was_ the first one to deviate from the fire-fighting status quo, so it's a shame that people hated Delphox because Gamefreak went right back to that sort of design with the subsequent starters. Incineroar could totally be fighting instead of dark, and Cinderace is still in the realm of being athletic.
The most hated ones are actually the best
Delphox is so cute, people just are salty because it's too feminine but what's wrong with that? Femboys need some love too
Tepig was one of my favorite starters :(. Then again I almost always choose the fire pokemon except for the fact I chose Grookey
I always ended up choosing grass except the one time I chose sobble
Blastoise Typhsion and Sceptile were all my first starter choices for each gen i always liked that this was kind of a coincidence of different starter types and that if i could have a trio of starters for a journey these would be my picks.
This guy knows 👌
I don't get why people like Typhlosion, it's literally just a weird skinny otter-bear with disembodied fire on its back
Mine were charmander chickorita and mudkip
@@spricko28 thats pretty solid ngl
@@perfectcell5111 well at first I tried to pay meganium as sweeper and then I realized that she can be played as heath siphon with defenses
Tepig is so underrated. He’s adorable while being cool
If Tepig was given Ground/Fire instead of Fire/Fighting he'd be more popular.
I chose him in black and white and barely used him lol ugly
He's a good Pokémon yet
I love emboar lol
Coolest Unova starter. Hands down.
The fact that how much effort you have put to make this video is 🙌💛
