This might be my favorite thing on Alter. I really wanted to know more about Marco's story but I could say that about all three characters. It was so weird because as crazy as Bill could sound, I never felt like he was lying. Crazy, maybe, but he believed in what he was saying. Her story, while much more plausible, just didn't add up. That being said, I would have let her go too. I don't think many people could just leave that situation without helping her. That ending though! ALTER is not making these movies they are just a platform for creators to host their movies LOOK IN THE DESCRIPTION for the creator and give credit and support where it's due
For starters, this is a magnificent horror short. Credit is to due everybody involved: The script writers, the director, the set designers, the camera work, the sound work, the set work, the actors, everyone. Really incredible stuff. I thought I would write out my theories as to what is going on here: (Spoilers below) Each character is a deconstruction of something from the bible, and the old man is the most mysterious of all. All three characters are liars, but the old man and the woman increasingly tell the truth as it becomes more apparent that Marco immediately knows when somebody is lying to him. If they lie to his face, he will know not to trust them. Instead, every character is trying to tell the truth in a way that serves their agenda. Marco talks about having "come back to life," and "needing to make everything better." This is generally in line with resurrection as a miracle portrayed in the Bible. Nobody is ever resurrected for no reason, by Jesus or anybody else. Holy items and people don't have real power, but are merely allowed by God to do supernatural things when it suits the divine agenda. Another major prophet who performed healings and resurrections was Elisha. Elisha healed and resurrected people during his lifetime, and was able to sense the intentions of anybody who spoke to him. He couldn't be lied to. While Elisha was able to heal others, however, he died of illness because he couldn't heal himself. In the Bible, a man's funeral was interrupted when marauders set upon the funeral party. The funeral party were afraid and had to run for their lives, so instead of finishing what they were doing they just chucked the dead man's body into Elisha's tomb and ran away. The dead man's body touched one of Elisha's bones, and he came back to life. This is considered noteworthy in that Elisha performed a miracle a year or so after his own death. Marco is injured when the old man finds him, and talks from the beginning about needing to be somewhere and find somebody, who he "owes." Marco wasn't just injured out there in the dark, but rather he died. He was resurrected, and now possesses at least one of Elisha's traits - he can't be lied to. However, he may not have been a good man prior to his death, and this second life for him may be intended to atone for the first. Marco says at one point that he "knows a demon when he sees one," but later speaks of their existence as a hypothetical ("let's say demons do exist....") So, Marco may be tasked with rescuing somebody with the marauders that were nearby when he was being buried and came back to life. This isn't delved into, but Marco's informed traits are of having been bad in the past, of having been given another lease on life, and always knowing when others are telling him the truth. He is tasked with doing something good, but he isn't exactly a hero so much as somebody doing his best to live up to whatever has been asked of him. The old man exhibits some of the traits he describes IN REFERENCE TO THE DEMON. Specifically, that the demon "will say whatever it needs to say." The old man makes some alarmingly specific claims, and possesses information that he must have acquired somehow if it's true at all. For example, how does he know the demon is Asmodeus? Why is he telling Marco about Asmodeus' cannibalism of other demons? How could he know those things? What would the relevance be? The old man exhibits many traits of good characters in the bible, such as offering food, drink, shelter, and hospitality. He is most likely telling the truth when he says he's kept the demon captive for many months with no food or water. He is telling the truth about Paula's farm, and how all of her troubles stopped when he locked the woman up. He encourages Marco to talk to Paula to learn whether he, himself, is trustworthy. However, he is suspiciously evasive on the point of why he was spending time with Paula in the first place. He strongly implies that he is her innocent friend and benefactor, but he doesn't spell this out, perhaps because Marco will sense a lie unless it is a lie of omission. Furthermore, he implies that he was plagued by lustful dreams and visions while the demon was free, and begins to hint at having seen things about which he has never told anybody. He backs off, though, perhaps so Marco won't press him for details he doesn't wish to divulge. I took this to mean that the old man possesses sexually devient tendencies on which he does not act. The demon knew this about him, and used these weaknesses against him. He knows she is supernatural because she knows secrets he has never told anyone. Later, Marco says to the old man that "(Marco) thinks (he's) the demon," but then makes it sound like he's going to leave it at that. I don't think the old man is a literal demon, or that Marco is speaking literally. Rather, this calls back to when the old man was telling war stories about fighting in World War II, and later being opposed to the Vietnam War since it was a war of aggression and not liberation from an oppressive, genocidal regime like the Nazis. In this respect, Marco has sensed that the old man is concealing a malicious agenda, but the old man is not a literal demon. He is a religiously devout human who has bent a demon to his will. The old man speaks of the Vietnam War and how "we" (Americans) were "the demons," and his friend was just trying to explain this to veterans who unknowingly or unwillingly carried out evil because they were patriots carrying out their country's orders. This concept comes full circle when Marco calls the old man "a demon," because his intuition tells him that he is the instigator and the responsible party for the situation at hand. The woman is a demon, and may even be Asmodeus himself. She is very confused about how to deal with Marco, since with her supernatural powers she can sense that most of the lies she can tell him won't work. When he demands to know how long she's been locked up, she says she "doesn't know" since the truth would strike him as ridiculous. (She may have been locked up for hundreds or thousands of years. There is obviously something metaphysical going on here. Even if she's only been there for a single human lifetime, it's possible that the old man was quite young when he locked her up, and if she admits it's been 30 years Marco will wonder why she's still so young.) When Marco demands to know WHY she is locked up, she again repeats not remembering because she is stalling for time. She is trying to figure out what to tell him, and this is very confusing since she can't lie to this human but requires his trust and help. As he demands more information, she eventually gives up slivers of the truth - she DID cause the problems on Paula's farm, but she did so against her will. She was talked into it and paid the first time, but the old man kept demanding she take it farther. She "didn't like it," meaning that even though she is a demon of lust, she had no quarrel with Paula and no personal reason for harming her animals. She carried out the harm against Paula's farm, but she did it for the old man against her will. So we know that the old man has not been fully honest about his intentions towards Paula, since he was responsible for the calamity that befell her farm, AND for its seeming salvation. We know that he has kept the demon prisoner for an undefined period of time while Paula has continued to benefit, and that Paula most likely doesn't know about whatever deal he made with the demon. If I had to guess, the old man wanted something from Paula, whether it was money, love, or her trust, and created the problem so he could play the hero and solve it. The woman really IS evil, but the minute Marco saves her she can't take her eyes off of the old man. The truck doors will not open, and when Marco turns his back for a few seconds to open them, the old man's screams are silenced abruptly within maybe three seconds. That's all she needs to run him down from what looks like a distance of 100 feet or more. She could easily have harmed Marco with just 3 more seconds, but at the end you can see she is watching Marco from far away in the darkness. She executes her captor, but spares the man who saved her. So, the old man is a human keeping a demon captive, but he is not the hero of the story. The woman is an extremely dangerous immortal demon, but she is not the malicious actor. Marco is a morally neutral foolish character who is trying to redeem himself. He can sense lies and discern the truth, but this doesn't always help him figure everything out correctly. At the end, he put together that neither the old man nor the woman were trustworthy, but that the old man was persecuting the woman and not vice versa. After he helps her, he feels dread realizing that following his instincts led him to set a demon free.

Excellent storytelling! I felt immersed in the setting, we had just enough information to from our own judgments and then change them back again as the story unfolded. When Marco appeared Bill readily takes him in and feeds him, showing kindness and quickly establishes himself as a spinner of yarns, perhaps somewhat embellished over time, but then we see the woman held in the outhouse. Her story sounds plausible, whereas Bill's sounds crazy. In the end, we see an astonished Marco as both have disappeared, and there is something very supernatural in the air. Very well produced and acted. Feels authentic.
Beautifully made film! The setting was appropriately dim, dark and dismal, like a nightmare, the flow was amazing and the two men were perfectly cast! Bravo!
Why is no one questioning what Marco is doing in the middle of the no where with a prior injury ? What has he been up to ? What’s his background ? I don’t think anyone here is free of sin. Overall this is amazing, the acting, one shot take, dialogue, lightning. Amazing for a screenwriting student such as myself.
Marco has the ability to detect lies and mentions he was going to come.back to life and make everything better. I'm pretty sure no one in this short is fully human.
The demon has the power to manipulate people's minds and coerce them into situations. That's why marco thought he was turning his life around only to end up right where he needed to be and in the right mental state for the demon to manipulate him. Watch the movie "I trapped the devil"

I see why most people think Bill was telling the truth and that the woman was the demon but I always find that the type of movies alter shows are usually psychological so I think maybe both Bill and the woman were never really there..... It's just a hypothetical situation where you must choose one and in this case he chose the demon's side. Or another conclusion could be that he was already dead and this was like some afterlife test to be in heaven or stay alone there. And since he chose the demon's story so he was left alone in that strange place, going by the wide frame shot at the end.

Same old story, men are always gonna fall for the Demon of lust. See the doorway to.Bills shack is in a crucifix shape at the end and her doorway is not.
Had some serious western vibes. Also feel like the writers did a decent amount of research on demonology, as Asmodeus is indeed the Lord of Lust. Fun fact, he also runs Hell's Gambling Den. Anyway, very tight script, I liked listening to Bill, and the abrupt ending made me really wish there was more...but I like that it leaves you with questions, because I think it's supposed to be open to interpretation. Good work
Great show. Amazing acting and camera work. My take is; the demon was trapped and left to rot. When the traveler got there (shipwreck?) The demon made both the man and woman as illusions in a bid to be let free. When it was, there was no more need for the illusions and it simply left.
I knew it was her from the start. Dude should've kept going. Notice how we couldn't see if she's pregnant or not and while the man was yelling stopped suddenly like he was cut off and both are gone. plus da story she gave isn't convincing

Reminds me of the old Twillight zone episode " The Howling man", where the guy who is lost comes in from a wicked storm and is taken in by a kind of monastery. They help him but there's one catch; He is told not to listen to the pleas of what looks like an innocent victim who is in a locked cell. I'm sure you can figure out the rest.
I am absolutely left speechless. Everything, the dialogue, the setting and atmosphere and plot are completely flawless. I want to be in a movie theatre watching this. The characters and setting made me feel like I was actually there and I kept guessing and thinking what would I do if I was Marcos. I did not want this to end I wanted the suspense to continue. Alter doesn't make these films, they showcase them, they have nothing to do with the sound.
Absolutely spot on Alter. At 7:46 the old man throws out 2 Devil signs with left hand. So I thought he might be the Demon but his story was convincing to listen to. The younger man fell prey to her story. Outstanding twist at the finale. He loosed her and the old man got swept away by the REAL DEMON. 25 mins went by like nothing..

I thought I would write out my theories as to what is going on here: (Spoilers below)
Each character is a deconstruction of something from the bible, and the old man is the most mysterious of all.
She (the demon) was watching Marco in the end after she killed the old man? Where?
great analysis! Thank you /
Probably the best Alter short to date. The man who played the vet did a phenomenal job.

I'm sorry but my suspension of disbelief collapsed as soon as he said "Asmodeus king of the nine hells" cuz that's straight up DnD lore lmao
No loser she was a demon. End of story dude. For fk sake people need to stop when a story is so straightforward

Yeah but a succubus is a female demon. Meaning that even under the female body it’s female so I couldn’t understand why he was saying he.
There is no gambling den in hell and asmodeus doesn't actually exist, most of demonology is made up crap with no biblical basis
