8020 Cabinet Framing, Drawer Making and 12v Wiring | VAN BUILD Update

- DIY Van Build Series 🚐 It's been a while since I've posted a video but if you know how short summers are around my neck of the woods, you know that I have to soak up every bit of warmth I can get!
With that said, here's an update on the progress I've made on my VAN BUILD. Despite what it looks like, a lot of progress has been made on the 8020 cabinet framing, I've roughed in the electrical, and I've even finished installing some of the drawers in the galley area.
The purpose of this van build is to learn some new techniques and to challenge myself. I can assure you that both of those things are happening here at the shop. I'm excited to show you everything I've been learning!

i too would like more detail on the 80/20...everyone using it skimps over the info as well as adding the laminate to the 80/20 frame
humble road uses 80/20 exclusively
I will be making more videos on this for sure
Show more Ellie, please do a video on her. Hehe
I was thinking a cool video would be a day in the vanlife from her perspective haha
Yay, new video. I really love your videos, keep it up. I would love more details on the 8/20 build.
I promise more info on 8020 is coming soon! 🙏 Thanks for watching!!
I would definitely appreciate more indepth videos on how you actually build things. The summaries are cool but not informative enough. More about the in depth planning process as well. Thanks
Things I'd like to see. More 80/20 how toos. Things I'd rather not see...you without a shirt in slow mo. (I should talk lol)
haha
Came here for the extruded aluminium build, subscribed for the chilled vibes
haha nice, welcome!
Thanks for the new video!
As others have said, 80/20 info.
Also, while generally, I like to see the video of the struggle, build, foibles, and successes... I get a lot of value from the discussion of what you considered doing, how you think it turned out, lessons learned, etc. and if the video is a mix of the finished product and you talking about the struggle to get there I think that is absolutely fine.
I’m more interested in the decision making and other thought processes (with a touch of visual interest to support) more than any “step by step”.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks Mitch! Ill try and include more of the thought process and thinking that goes into the build
I see @ 3:50 you're scribing with a compass. That'll get you close but if you need spot-on, once you're close, re-scribe your pattern with something like a fender washer (I use a Danish 25 øre coin) which will give you a pattern with a -offset. When you mark your part scribe with the same washer/coin to create a +offset and make your cut.
This comes from boats '74-'78 and van '78-'82
I'm in the middle of building a 2018 144 4x4 and we have similiar layout. I'm plannning on a futon bed in the same spot and I'm also using 80/20, the 30 series. I'm interested in understanding how you plan on doing your futon bed in regards to the sliders, linear bearing, ...? I have some ideas but haven't finalized the design. My going to target the 3/4 bed size which is 75x48 which will allow me to buy 3/4 sheets.
What 80/20 Profile do you use for the upper cabinets and lower cabinets? Are they 10 or 15 profiles? Would like to see how you attach them to the Van's sheet metal and also how the plywood is attach to the 80/20.
What PROFILE are you using here in 80/20 bed build? Show the van layout again if you please.. Heehoo ha..
great vid Scott...in relation to the wiring. along with dynamoing them. I write on the wires a series of numbers (1 2 3 4 5 etc) with a pentel marker and have a piece of paper with the legend of what they go to,,, it s real bummer to feed. series of cables only to find 2 stickers identifying them have came off during the feed 🤔
Seems like everyone who builds out Van/buses use materials and ideas like for a house. When the place to look is boats and aircraft. It seems the whole tiny house/van builders are always trying to reinvent the wheel. People have been building and living in boats for 100s of years so good boat builders know how to use space. Aircraft interior is built with very lite and strong materials and the designers/builders know how to use space. Both aircraft and boats are small and flex a lot when underway just like an RV so build it like a boat/aircraft not a house. Yes it will cost a little more. If you ever get a chance to visit a company that builds aircraft interior be sure to do so...
do you have a video on the fridge cabinet?
Hello Scott. You made me smile today when you explained that you bring your modules in and out of the van many times. I am also doing a van conversion right now and thought that i was doing something wrong moving things around like crazy. Even my wife asked me if this was the right way to do it. You made my day, i am not the only one.
haha yeah it was never ending in and out in and out.
Hi, any issues with the powder coating? I’m thinking of tolerances, fit, holes etc.
It changes a bit but not enough for me that it mattered.
The laminate is a far more durable finish as well. While a little more expensive going with all 12ga wire on the dc side regardless of fusing I think is less of a hassle.
Yeah its not that much more money in the long run,
Mitch’s Tee...are your builds happening in San Diego?
No I wish I just spent a lot of time down there
Great series. Found it due to being interested in 8020. Really appreciate your content.
Awesome, thank you!
Great video...how do you attach the panels to the 8020?
Hey Steve! I actually just posted a video on this today: ua-cam.com/video/QhoIuFXXEP8/v-deo.html
We've just done a lot of the 12v wiring in our van. Great video :)
That's awesome! How has the wiring been going?
we can so relate to things going bad in the first 20m min of they day, followed by 10 hrs of "square dancing" haha. Your dad said it perfectly
I saved this notification all day to be sure I watched. Totally misleading title, though. Where’s the title content?
I really dig your style, even if you’re not a “designer.” Anyhow, hope you’ve been well!
Is there a video showing what you used for the headliner and method? Looks awesome.
For covering the headliner shelf in fabric?
I've binged on all your videos and now I can't remember... Lol
Have you thought of a tutorial on using the glue in a spray gun? Read a lot about the gun clogging and noticed you mention there was something you did wrong initially?
Where did you get the 80/20 powder coated?
Its easy to find someone local that does it just do some googling its not that expensive.
Delivered my 2019, 170 Ext., HD 4x4 cargo van to my builder just about the time you made 6-month to complete video. Mine isn't done either!
haha yeah good thing is I dont have any angry clients.
New one! Great to see all the details of y the build👍
Scott really enjoying your channel since finding it a few weeks ago. Looking forward to following this build. Just remember "Failure is the tuition you pay for success".
Hey Tony you are right and thanks for checking out the videos I really appreciate the feedback.
Yay I absolutely love yr channel. It talks of all the things ppl tend to gloss over about the build. Would u b able to document how u build Yr cabinets? Cheers! New sub
Will do!!
It's looking really good! I'm planning someday (hopefully soon) to convert a school bus and came here to see how you're using the 80/20. I was thinking it would be awesome to get it powder coated so it's awesome to see how you did that! I'm definitely going to stick around to see how it all turns out :)
Thanks Lily! Yeah the powder coating makes it look SO GOOD. Really glad I chose to do that. I'll be doing a lot more video/blog content on 8020 soon. Thanks for following along!
How you mounted the ceiling panels to the roof ribs. Thank-you
I used Rivnuts for that.
Good to see you back Scott missed not watching yer vids 👍
Thanks ws busy enjoying summer!
You took the words right out of my mouth! 2 steps forward and 10 backwards, I've been saying that for weeks!
I'm using 80/20 too. Interesting how you did your drawers mounted to the 80/20, I'm stuck on attaching cabinet doors to the 80/20, have you found a hinge that works?
Here are some pictures of my build with 80/20
photos.app.goo.gl/xBFQSkiLZn1P72UQ7
Ill try and show how I mounted them in another upcoming video but im super happy with how they turned out so far.
@@scottadamson6116 If you used a hinge what size did you use?
@@scottadamson6116 I second the comment above in wanting to see how you attached your drawer sliders to the 80/20 -as well as I'd like to see how you attached your ceiling panels to the rivenuts without them showing. Gotta be honest with the van build videos out there, so often they skip over these crucial details. Would love to see the specifics on things like the attachments and anchoring. Keep up the good work!
Season 2!! lol Nice Vid!!
Thanks Billy!
Great video! I would love more info on the 80/20! Thanks!
humble road uses 80/20 exclusively
You got it! Anything specific you are looking for help with.
I am just learning about 80/20 and I’m thinking about using it for the bed frame and maybe framing the shower- so anything you can teach would be awesome!!
Love your Vids :)
Thank you for checking them out!
Details on mounting 80/20 to the van sheet metal would be awesome
Awesome Ill make a few videos as I tackle the other cabinets in the van and show how I am mounting it.
Scott Adamson ok I will be waiting. With bated
breath. Ha.. Ha.. 💨
keep it up bro!
I will!
