  • DIY Van Build Series 🚐 It's been a while since I've posted a video but if you know how short summers are around my neck of the woods, you know that I have to soak up every bit of warmth I can get!
With that said, here's an update on the progress I've made on my VAN BUILD. Despite what it looks like, a lot of progress has been made on the 8020 cabinet framing, I've roughed in the electrical, and I've even finished installing some of the drawers in the galley area.
The purpose of this van build is to learn some new techniques and to challenge myself. I can assure you that both of those things are happening here at the shop. I'm excited to show you everything I've been learning!

i too would like more detail on the 80/20...everyone using it skimps over the info as well as adding the laminate to the 80/20 frame

I would definitely appreciate more indepth videos on how you actually build things. The summaries are cool but not informative enough. More about the in depth planning process as well. Thanks

    Thanks for the new video!
As others have said, 80/20 info.
Also, while generally, I like to see the video of the struggle, build, foibles, and successes... I get a lot of value from the discussion of what you considered doing, how you think it turned out, lessons learned, etc. and if the video is a mix of the finished product and you talking about the struggle to get there I think that is absolutely fine.
I’m more interested in the decision making and other thought processes (with a touch of visual interest to support) more than any “step by step”.
    Keep up the good work!

I see @ 3:50 you're scribing with a compass. That'll get you close but if you need spot-on, once you're close, re-scribe your pattern with something like a fender washer (I use a Danish 25 øre coin) which will give you a pattern with a -offset. When you mark your part scribe with the same washer/coin to create a +offset and make your cut.
This comes from boats '74-'78 and van '78-'82

I'm in the middle of building a 2018 144 4x4 and we have similiar layout. I'm plannning on a futon bed in the same spot and I'm also using 80/20, the 30 series. I'm interested in understanding how you plan on doing your futon bed in regards to the sliders, linear bearing, ...? I have some ideas but haven't finalized the design. My going to target the 3/4 bed size which is 75x48 which will allow me to buy 3/4 sheets.

What 80/20 Profile do you use for the upper cabinets and lower cabinets? Are they 10 or 15 profiles? Would like to see how you attach them to the Van's sheet metal and also how the plywood is attach to the 80/20.

great vid Scott...in relation to the wiring. along with dynamoing them. I write on the wires a series of numbers (1 2 3 4 5 etc) with a pentel marker and have a piece of paper with the legend of what they go to,,, it s real bummer to feed. series of cables only to find 2 stickers identifying them have came off during the feed 🤔

Seems like everyone who builds out Van/buses use materials and ideas like for a house. When the place to look is boats and aircraft. It seems the whole tiny house/van builders are always trying to reinvent the wheel. People have been building and living in boats for 100s of years so good boat builders know how to use space. Aircraft interior is built with very lite and strong materials and the designers/builders know how to use space. Both aircraft and boats are small and flex a lot when underway just like an RV so build it like a boat/aircraft not a house. Yes it will cost a little more. If you ever get a chance to visit a company that builds aircraft interior be sure to do so...

Hello Scott. You made me smile today when you explained that you bring your modules in and out of the van many times. I am also doing a van conversion right now and thought that i was doing something wrong moving things around like crazy. Even my wife asked me if this was the right way to do it. You made my day, i am not the only one.

The laminate is a far more durable finish as well. While a little more expensive going with all 12ga wire on the dc side regardless of fusing I think is less of a hassle.

It's looking really good! I'm planning someday (hopefully soon) to convert a school bus and came here to see how you're using the 80/20. I was thinking it would be awesome to get it powder coated so it's awesome to see how you did that! I'm definitely going to stick around to see how it all turns out :)

I'm using 80/20 too. Interesting how you did your drawers mounted to the 80/20, I'm stuck on attaching cabinet doors to the 80/20, have you found a hinge that works?

@@scottadamson6116 I second the comment above in wanting to see how you attached your drawer sliders to the 80/20 -as well as I'd like to see how you attached your ceiling panels to the rivenuts without them showing. Gotta be honest with the van build videos out there, so often they skip over these crucial details. Would love to see the specifics on things like the attachments and anchoring. Keep up the good work!
