This video is from Canada's Juno Awards show. Cohen was in the audience. She was nervous. Legend has it that Cohen turned to his agent and said something like, "Well, we can take this off the playlist." It is true that when the organizers of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada approached Cohen to sing this at the Olympics opening ceremonies, he suggested k.d. -- and a legend was born. As to being grounded and going barefoot -- yeah, she is a follower of Tibetan Buddhism.
She is a legend in Canada! One of the best singers ever!!
I saw her live a few years back and when you hear this live, the hair on my arms were standing up. Powerful.

kd sang this when Leonard (say it like Lennerd) Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and then a few years later at his memorial tribute concert.
She's still singing. Still barefoot.
Long time host of The Tonight Show, Johnny Carson, was a big fan. That performance of "Trail of Broken Hearts" is good. She had a memorable visit to the Arsenio Hall show, where she sang "Miss Chatelaine". She recorded duets with Tony Bennett, released a version of Crying with Roy Orbison, and sang on a James Bond film. It's been quite a musical journey from her cowboy punk, Patsy Cline tribute band in the 80s, through her commercial success in the 90s, and an unusual shared writing credit with The Rolling Stones. There was even a song written about her by Canadian folk singer Stompin' Tom Connors.
While I'm a fan of many of her songs, I wouldn't be surprised if she said her best day singing was with Loretta Lynn, Kitty Wells and Brenda Lee on "Honky Tonk Angels Medley".
And remember "Don't Smoke in Bed".
She is definitely a legend there will be a film about her in years to come
Did you know Leonard Cohen made Hallelujah JDs song. He was asked to sing it for opening the Vancouver Olympics but he said "that is KDs song now, ask her" they did and she opened the Olympics.
KD Lang’s biggest hit ‘Constant Cravings ‘ She is still touring she lives a couple hours from me. She does “ Crying and Calling all Angels so so so good as well.
There was also Miss Chatelaine which was also a big hit for her.
Thanks for this video, she is truly incredible. This performance was at the 2005 Juno Awards (Canadian Music Awards). Neil Young was sick that day so you should also check out the amazing performance of Helpless she did that very same night!
She did her show at the Beacon in NYC barefoot the whole time. She makes it enormously appealing. And she never makes a bad sound; it's not in her to make a mistake, vocally. If you can see her live, take that chance.
This is my absolute favorite version of this song. Only one that comes close is pentatonix. I've loved it for so long I had it posted on my Myspace page lololol. That was a 6 minute standing ovation if I remember correctly.

The one she did as a tribute to Leonard Cohen is better as it is a close up.compared to the Olympics. You can see the.emotion on her face when she sings.
kd lang does an incredible cover of Roy Orbison's Crying. You need to hear it! Also she had a big hit with Constant Craving. Her voice is incredible. She sang Hallelujah at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and was in her bare feet and a white suit. I think singing in bare feet is her thing. You should check out that version as well, it was awesome.
She does have an incredible voice. I think one of the best female vocalists ever. Watching her concerts on UA-cam is great also. She's very fun and soooooo talented. Love her.

She did not start out with Roy Orbison. He was a strong influence but didn't meet until she'd achieved a hit .

That was years into her career!
She actually was part of the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988. I believe that was her first time on world stage but had been around Canada especially Alberta before that.
She was singing before her recordings with Roy. She also performed in the closing ceremonies in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary.

If u get a chance, have a listen to kd on the tonight show singing "3 cigarettes in an ashtray." It was her 2nd song that night. Amazing. For Johnny Carson 's last show hosting the Tonight Show, he specifically asked her to be the musical act!! Also her version of hallelujah from the Leonard Cohen tribute is her/the best version IMHO. Although I can hear her sing Hallelujah all day. 😁

Suggestion: Leonard Cohen, Partisan, live 2008 Helsinki, Finland. Amazing live version of a classic. It is a shame the video version has been taken down. Video version available, live 2010 Helsinki, (stabilized). I just love the 2008 version. No big difference I guess. And video is always nice, to see them perform, so maybe the 2010 version after all.
Since you reacted to Nightwish after this one, I wanna mention that NW bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala also performs barefoot some times. Not with NW as far as I know, but with his own band Tarot.

wrong version of KD Lang's rendition of Leonard's song! check out 2010 Logies in australia. Super emotional. And her song was "constant craving". it was her most popular after this. And yep, she sings barefoot. The reason you never heard of her was because of the times of the day. She came out, and radio stations refused to play her songs. She is an amazing talent, even more than whitney.

Great performance - but you really should check out Leonard Cohen singing it - live in London I believe is the one I'm thinking of. No one else works in that sardonic humour that tempers the passion of the thing.

Constant Craving is probably the one you mean. She's I think still singing, because she's amazing. She just didn't fit into any genre. She tried to be a country singer but it was the eighties, and you know how that goes.
The no shoes thing and her outfit...if I remember correctly she is a Buddhist...maybe that's why. It's kind of how I picture Buddhist monks (though I could be stretching)
She's great, but you should check out the original by Leonard Cohen. Or some of his other songs; like Suzanne.

She is great but the crowd is ridiculous. I prefer her performance at the Logies awards in Australia. They listened quietly then went crazy at the end.
You might be thinking of "Constant Craving?" Or perhaps "Lock, Stock, and Teardrops." She also sang, early in her career, with Roy Orbison on "Crying." kd lives her life as barefoot as possible, believing that it promotes health and well being. She is also vegetarian (I can't remember if she is vegan as well).

"Constant Craving" - her huge hit - did not showcase her vocal abilities AT ALL. It was very straight-forward pop and honestly one of my least-favorite k.d. lang songs. The stuff k.d. can do with her voice would blow your mind - this song being but ONE example of many.
She also ALWAYS sings barefoot - she says it grounds her!
