I agree with Koru, KD singing at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics was absolutely transcendent. She was not going to let Canada down! A FYI for you - Leonard Cohen wrote Hallelujah and he was definitely a poet.

I consider that moment the ultimate in Canadiana. Perhaps Canada's best Female vocalist of all time, performing a song written by Canada's best songwriter ever (sorry Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot, and Joni Mitchell (and Stompin Tom Conner:) ) ) at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

Cohen was an icon, although his voice grew rougher over the years through drinking and smoking he could still pull the deepest of feelings from his audience. He passed the torch to KD, when he declined to sing at the Olympics and he suggested k.d.. and then was there to hear her.

k d is incredible. One of the things about her singing is that she doesn't do it the same way every time. It's not like some artists who have a version of a song that they repeat endlessly. k d always brings a fresh nuance and emotion to every single performance.
Being from Alberta, I have seen her numerous times. One of the most absolutely transcendent performances I ever saw was of Hallelujah followed by Heaven (Talking Heads) on the Sis Boom Bang tour under a beautiful warm star lit night in Calgary.

    Hiya, Tash.
You may have noticed a difference in the lyrics of the two versions. There's a reason for that: The song has 98(?) verses. I've seen Cohen do at least two different versions. And if you wanna sit through the song again, check out KD's version at The Junos. It'll blow you away. As for Leonard Cohen. What an absolute legend. Was truly a national treasure. Held in awe by the music world. He was a poet first & foremost, but his songs are epic. Please, you must check out more of his stuff. Dance me To the End of Love, First We Take Manhattan, Suzanne, Closing Time.

It's a powerful and beautiful song, and according to Cohen about faith in life. Rufus Wainwright is another Canadian singer with an awesome version. And Jeff Buckley's is also stellar.

Each time KD sings the word 'Hallelujah' she masterfully does it with a slightly different inflection. In contrast, most covers (even by great singers) sing the word the same way every time. KD shows how important the arrangement of a song can be. That lesson is also amazingly clear when you listen to Jennifer Warnes' covers of Cohen songs on her absolutely brilliant 'Famous Blue Raincoat' album. Tash do yourself a favour and react to 'Joan of Arc' from that album. Written by Cohen, it is performed on the album as a duet between Leonard & Jennifer with her doing the arrangement. It is a stunningly beautiful performance that truly highlights what Cohen is capable of in his song writing.

Her covers of this song are the only versions that I think eclipse Leonard's original. Leonard had the services of Anjani Thomas and Jennifer Warnes (among many others) to help bring vocal power to his original studio recording, and they are, of course, superb on that album.
But k.d. lang is the only artist I've heard who seems to truly and deeply understand Leonard's song. She gets it. If anybody else could have written it besides LC, it's her. And her voice is vastly superior to Leonard's.
This song is sort of my personal "Stairway To Heaven" in that I've heard it ENOUGH ALREADY. It shows up in movies and TV dramas and reality singing contest shows and I am OVER IT (for the most part.) I don't even think it's the best song on the album it comes from! And I'd pretty much be OK with never hearing it again, with the exception of k.d. lang's covers.
And don't even get me started on Jeff Buckley.

Unfortunately, as so often happens, a great artist is not recognized during their lifetime for their genius. This song was not a hit for Leonard Cohen, though it did start to be appreciated before he died.
In the early 80's, I lived in northern Alberta, and myself and some friends used to go to Edmonton for weekends and party. Sometimes the Grant McEwan College would have cabarets and different students would preform. Around 1982 or 83 I was priveledged to see K.D. Lang and the Reclines. No one knew who they were, and she was dressed in cowboy boots, a long country girl style skirt paired with a mans cowboy shirt. With big, horned-rimmed glasses and her spiky punk hair do, they sure made a statement. And then she would unleash that voice. You really should checkout some of her earlier work, to see how far she has progressed in the industry. She was kind of shunned by mainstream country when she started, and she fought hard to get where she is,

Tash you should check out KD Lang's performance of Hallelujah at the Calgary Olympics in 2010. I think it's her best rendition, another level really, and it's in an unbelievable setting - the Olympic stadium, Vancouver, Canada 2010. You can catch it here ua-cam.com/video/tcOQSk_cMO0/v-deo.html. She also sang at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary.

She actually did perform at the Calgary Olympics, but in 1988. She did "Turn Me Around" during the closing ceremonies.

@@shonastewart7943 I stand corrected. She did sing at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary but Hallelujah was performed by her at the Olympics in 2010, Vancouver.

No. 694 here. The thing about this song is the the record company didn't want it on his album. It was considered too controversial. He had to fight for it. Good for him.

Last year in Montreal (my hometown and Leonard Cohen's) I saw a whole documentary about his Hallelujah song. I gave it a chance as Cohen is not my favourite singer and the film did not disappoint.

Awesome reaction channel. I'm, glad you get to enjoy one of Canada's finest in Canadian music. You should check our their hits like- new Orleans is sinking, boots and hearts, blow at high dough, long time running. As, well you should check out a group called " the Headpins," and listen to their tunes- turn it loud, don't it make you feel, and line of fire. Thank you for sharing our music. Respect and blesses.

BTW your one of the few reactors to Leonard and other than some really BIG names most don't know the very broad range of music we have from folksy to speed metal and everything in-between for a laugh try Arrogant Worms - Dangerous ( one of our astronauts got to blast it in space), The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer - Pretty Please , Roll with The Punches, Shake It to Rush ( Big Name ) Tom Sawyer is a classic by them, B.T.O., The Guess Who, Chillawack ( also a name of town in British Columbia ) just to name a few there's also a lot of Indigenous artist's as well.most tend to go towards rap, blues, folk even rock but maybe with an Indigenous flair, Snotty Nose Rez Kids or ( S.N.R.K's) for short they cover a bunch of topics and yes can get political same with Dresus, Cody Coyote I recomend Warrior by him, Winnipeg's Most Notorius to name a few. Now The band yes that's a name had Robbie Robertson who went on with a solo career from back in the 60's he still actually teaches kids on his home reserve, at least as far as I know.
