The ultimate compliment to any artist is when the song's writer (Leonard Cohen) is invited to perform their song at a major event (the 2010 Vancouver Olympics) and the writer declines the invitation and replies, "ask k.d. lang, it's her song now." So true, so true ❤

@@marciebulsaraorcutt According to Adam Cohen, Leonard's son, his dad (75 years old at that time) was asked to sing at the 2010 Opening Ceremonies. But, Leonard was recovering from a lower back injury that had caused him to cancel several earlier appearances. He knew k.d. was going to be there. According to Adam, his dad said, "k.d. is going to be there, what more do you need?" Leonard said, if k.d. sang Hallelujah, she would sing it in, "its ultimate, blissful state of perfection."

kd lang is one of the greatest singers of all time. I first discovered here in the late 80's with her album ABSOLUTE TORCH AND TWANG. I was knocked out by her vocals-the tone, the power, the individuality of her sound, the drama that was at her command as an interpreter, her harmonies-she does all her vocals for the most part on her music, so all the backing vocals blend in an incredible way, and I also loved her sense of fun. she does a fun song called "big boned gal", the opening song on the album/cd is a great, fun tune called "luck in my eyes" where her vocals are just fantastic. it is a great cd. and an excellent introduction to kd for me. the cd is pretty much all modern country music in sound. fiddles, slide guitars. excellent harmonies throughout. and then that incredible voice. she has that wonderful yodel-like sob in her sound that great singers have. Patsy Cline had it. Linda Ronstadt had it. kd lang has it.
but the song on that album that really blew me away and made me a lifetime fan is called "pulling back the reigns". have a listen, because it is a country song that is also a kd lang vocal tour de force. watch the official video. it is just kd singing alone on a very stylized looking stage. I love this video, because it shows just how much her label knew she was a brilliant talent worth showcasing. this was 1988/89. nobody was out yet in music really. or Hollywood. there was no gender fluidity per se. female singers didn't look like what kd lang looked like. she is in male cowboy attire essentially. her hair is cut short in a very specific way that women weren't wearing at that time, unless they were kd lang. she is sexy, and masculine, and feminine and heartbreaking, and alive and so thrilling all at once in the video, her visual alone is so striking for the time. and then that vocal sound that pours out of her, my god. she is just incredible. I was hooked right there forever. have a watch/listen to "pulling back the reigns" it is a kd lang triumph. and I have seen her twice in concert, and twice did she get a standing ovation mid-concert after "crying", and twice did I feel blessed to have witnessed genuine greatness. the art of kd lang is original and great! I feel lucky to have watched her incredible art all of these years. wowie wow. I liked and subscribed. thanks for posting.

One thing that most folks that don't follow country music don't know is that a basic requirement is the ability to tell a story while using an exceptional singing voice. Start out with In Hell I'll Be in Good Company, You Are My Sunshine or Black Lung (Our Vinyl version). That first song has 400 M views and 2.7 M likes. Also for a twist, check out Tommy Johansson - just released a cover of Take Me Home Country Road, but he's a metal singer and spices it up a bit. Cheers!

Ok so if you heard/watched this before it’s not a REACTION video. When was your first -and why didn’t you record??
Her 2010 Olympics is THE. definitive. rendition. for all time. Cohen said it’s HER song now.
But this version is also incredible, of course, and she absolutely deserved the audience’s immediate leap to ovation! One must note her heartfelt humble and grateful response.
This is my first time watching one of your videos and I gotta say that if each time you’re going to mention Canada a dozen times: I’m out!
NY and the US have residents and citizens from LITERALLY every point on the globe, and Canadians are the ONLY ones who are constantly bringing it up: it’s like you’re GENETICALLY INCAPABLE of doing otherwise. Almost everyone has some pride in their home culture, but NO ONE else does this. You tell yourselves it’s “pride” - but in truth it’s provincial, defensive, insecure, and annoying AF because you just. can’t. stop yourselves.

Riiiight. It’s Canadians who brag about their country to much. What a weirdly negative comment you just put here. Feel feee to not watch if mentioning Canada is so offensive to you. Really. What a weird thing to get upset about.

Can you please react to her live version of this song at the olympics… she could have lip singed but refused and said she would sing live… it is also incredibly moving… I saw her perform live a few times and she is the best singer of a whole generation… nothing touched her vocal command …special

I like the Canandian. Tenors much better, I guess it's because I have been hearing it from them for years.

Apparently he wrote 76 verses and chose which ones to use at each performance. I could be wrong.

I would not call Leonard Cohen’s songs country. He and Lang are Canadian treasures, both defy classification.
Cohen considered himself to be both a religious Jew and a Buddhist .
And I also love Rufus Wainwright.

K.D. Lang has never fit into one genre; a truly unique person/performer. For a more country feel, I’d recommend checking out “Trail of Broken Hearts” from her “Torch and Twang” album.

Gee, am I in a parallel universe? I love KD Lang. She is great with an amazing voice. But in what universe is she considered country? I love Leanord Cohen. Like most people I love Hallelujah. But, tell me, exactly In what universe is that song considered country? Not the one I live in, for sure. The rest of you can live in whatever universe you want. In fact, I encourage you to do so. I'll stay in mine. Why don't y'all just stay out of mine? Thank you very much.
