Her version captures a poignancy of what I believe this song is about ... the pain of fractured love ... better than other versions. Her version is my all time favorite.
KD Lang's interpretation is by far my favorite of any I've heard. She sings it like it's from her own experiences. It's not a beautiful ballad like all the rest. She really sings the pain in the lyrics and makes you feel them. She got the stamp of approval by Leonard Cohen and, if I remember correctly, he said the song can officially be retired after hearing her sing it because she took it to a place beyond the emotion he intended and takes it to an entirely new level. Thank you so much for reacting to her singing this.
The man she greeted at the end was Leonard Cohen. He mentioned in other places he's written more than 80 verses. KD Lang's interpretation to me is prayerful, sorrowful, joyful, and uplifting all at the same time. Thank you for reacting to this. I agree, it is beautiful.
Yes, and a double whammy of Canadian talent. After he heard her first performance of this song, he said that it simply "belonged" to her. I was sad when she retired...one of the very best singers ever...and so "real". She's just a down-to-earth person
Adam Cohen seriously needs to find and publish all of those verses. The version I heard was that a journalist asked Leonard how many verses there were in total and he sent him pages and pages via fax. The world needs to see those verses. The ones that didn't make the cut for the song. Cohem was a genius poet. Even if never incorporated into a cover by anyone they would still be priceless on their own.
Thank you for posting....her very best rendition was at the Vancouver's Olympics 2010. Breathtaking!! Oh and the only way to listen to kd is in your car volume as high as you can stand it.
The definitive interpreter of this powerful, painful, joyful song for me. Lang has long ranked as one of my very favorite singers. Beautiful instrument, amazing technique, deeply emotive.
Agreed. That version from the Olympics is a must see. (View the one from the official Olympic Channel to get a crisp clean recording of it.) This version here is perfection, but that rendition will mesmerize you and shake you to your very being. kd, you took Leonard Cohen's beautiful work of art, and made it the masterpiece he envisioned.
I am a diehard Pentaholic but KD totally turns this song into a spiritual experience. I find myself consciously breathing with serenity. Lol... I love both versions and wish everybody knew them.🥰
I have been fortunate enough to hear her sing this live on a number of occasions and I have always been left in tears with the emotional depth she brings to the song and by the beauty of her voice.
I saw her once and even though I have seen her perform on tv countless times. Live takes it.to.a whole other level. She had the whole crowd mesmerized! Love her.
I believe that Leonard Cohen himself said kd sings the definitive version of this song. I've heard her sing it live in concert and I literally forgot to breathe. The entire audience gave her a standing ovation in the middle of the concert. She also sang it at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Vancouver, and brought down an entire stadium. The song itself is a fascinating and heartfelt exploration of biblical stories. Cohen was, like me, Jewish, and it's interesting to hear him wrestle with the Torah like this. Doing so is very much a Jewish tradition, and he does it beautifully.
Your face is exactly the expression I have when I listen to k.d. it's a face that says "whoa, what am I hearing, this is amazing so I must pay attention."
This kd ‘s best rendition of this song. Leonard Coren has said nobody could sing it better. I’m very proud of kd . My Canadian heart is touched by her voice.
I absolutely love KD, easily 20 years before her time. She is a rare vocalist that could reach 4 or more octaves, not really showcased in this song. Give Pulling Back On The Reins a try.
Just in case you didn't know, the gentleman that she comes down from the stage and bows to at the end of her performance, and receives acknowledgment back from, is the song’s author Leonard Cohen. As you know, this song has been covered by untold artists, and before he passed away, Mr. Cohen finally acknowledged that his favorite cover of his famous song was that of k.d. Lang, his fellow Canadian. I always enjoy your thoughtful and incisive reactions as well as your enthusiasm for all types of music. Plus you are adorable.
I saw a reference to this in the comments yesterday (when I was having a mini marathon of your videos), but I’d never heard of this version before, either. Update: I’m loving the soulful uniqueness of her version-her falsetto in the middle (and at the end) was just gorgeous. FYI, I also really felt your focused attentiveness and appreciate your descriptive comments and careful analysis. 💕
Don't think that she's not capable of vocal acrobatics because she is. She just understands the words, the music, the human spirit enough to know when a song calls for pure honesty and nothing more.
The video of her doing this song at the 2010 Olympics is amazing. She is a Canadian treasure for sure. You should really experience the Olympics version. Its unlike any other...
I really appreciate your reactions, she is definitely one of the best voices I've ever heard. Please react to her and Roy Orbison singing Crying together and also to her song Barefoot. Thank you so much 💖🏳️🌈
Outstanding! One of several excellent covers of Cohen's "Hallelujah". Lang's version here, the iconic Jeff Buckley version, and of course the Pentatonix version. You really can't go wrong with any of them. Great performances of a great song by great artists.
How can someone not know of kd lang?😳 One of the greatest voices of our time. 😊 I get a real kick out of all these young people who post videos to you tube commenting on famous performers and tunes, often reacting as if they have made a HUGE discovery nobody knew about. 😂
Always nice to have some thing new pop up in the feed. A real treat to have Leonard there in the front row. The kd lang I have always recommended to folks is from the year before, 2005 Juno awards where she sang Hallelujah with her band and an orchestra... a bit more theatrical, but the crowd at the Junos is always great!
@Hearth And Soul That version was incredible but if she actually did it better on a Australian morning show. Check out this version. ua-cam.com/video/yTJ9LTFJkTU/v-deo.html
You need to check a band called Walk off the Earth. Their covers and original songs are amazing and creative! Shape of you, Old Town Road, Hold on and Red Hands just to name a few of my favorites.
A quick google search of "Leonard Cohen Hallelujah lyrics full" brought me to this nugget. I've only heard it performed by Mr. Cohen: I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
You might not be able to react to K.D Lang's version of this song at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony but it was a real eye eye opener to who she was. It gave her that stage to sing before a Billion ppl and it's just like you watched now but on a scale only a true performer can due. Do it on yourself and check it out.
I’m not sure if you’re still doing reactions but as a big k.d. lang fan I’d like to suggest some of my favorite songs of hers for you because I can tell you really appreciate her singing. Either for reactions or just for you to hear and enjoy: “Consequences of falling”, “infinite and unforeseen”, “what better said”, “outside myself”, “Theme from Valley of the Dolls”. Enjoy!
In this version, the man she greets at the end is Leonard Cohen himself. Here is an evaluation, by a musician who knows his stuff. explaining the vocal changes she makes throughout the song so that she takes us on a journey - ua-cam.com/video/qgic5-Q_Fzc/v-deo.html
Please react to Katrina Velarde's cover of Mariah Carey's WHENEVER YOU CALL and Beyonce's STAND UP FOR LOVE. You might hit your head in your ceiling! That's how good she covered these songs!!! 👍👍👍
Shania Twain, Emily Haines from Metric, Feist, jann Arden, Serena Ryder, Sarah Harmer, Lights, Ruth B, Buddy Saint Marie, Diana Krall, Basis Bulat, Rose Cousins, Tanya Tagaq, Alannis Morissette, Chantel Kreviazuk, Stella Lennon, Carly Rae Jepson...it is worth the listen on any of these artists.
You should check out other amazing Canadian singers like Joni Mitchell, Celine Dion, Anne Murray, Rita McNeil, AGT contestant Roberta Battaglia, and Alessia Cara, Sarah Mclachlain, Alannis Morrisette, Avril Lavigne, Jesse Reyez...
Would also love to hear your reaction to kd's performance on Johnny Carson sing's a Patsy Cline classic "Three Cigarettes In an Ashtray". Johnny Carson apparently thought the world of kd's voice. Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/KwIH4_AnlpQ/v-deo.html
I think her performance at the 2010 Olympics was better than this one. Very similar, but vocally better. My all-time favorite : ua-cam.com/video/tcOQSk_cMO0/v-deo.html
Hello there, Kassi! I am a (relatively) new subscriber to your channel, but already a lover of it! Your reactions are from the heart, real, funny, serious, informative, and ... I could go on. Thank you for your videos! They are entertaining to watch. I must admit, my favourite reactions are your reactions to Celine Dion and k.d. lang. I love both of them very much and I thought I'd put a couple videos that I think may interest you. In a reaction video to Celine singing in French, you asked for more suggestions of her French music. I prefer her version from the Olympics but can I just tell you how much I miss you. I know you're on TikTok doing different things but I'm sad that you just completely abandoned this platform never gave a reason why and never even came and said goodbye. I won't look at it as a huge fu¢k you to all of us but that is what it felt like>
Her version captures a poignancy of what I believe this song is about ... the pain of fractured love ... better than other versions. Her version is my all time favorite.
Other sing It like a Church Hymn.k.d goes to the Pain of a Heart wrenching Love Affair that the verses of the Song relay.
One of the greatest voices of our time singing one of the greatest songs. Never fails to move me to tears.

Thank you Kassi for posting this. She is the real deal. What you see is what you get from this gal!! None better.
I love her. Angels love her. She's a gift to us.

@@gayleburton4245 - The version she sang at the 2017 "Tower of Song: Memorial Tribute to Leonard Cohan" stopped the show.
The definitive interpreter of this powerful, painful, joyful song for me. Lang has long ranked as one of my very favorite singers. Beautiful instrument, amazing technique, deeply emotive.
I can feel beautiful, raw emotion everytime K.D. Lang sings...
She sang this at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games here in Vancouver, well recieved with a standing ovation.

Just in case you did not know. The man that was on the front row, who KD came down to hug was Leonard Cohen, himself.
KD makes me cry- she is just the most amazing singer
Best voice in the music buisness
I have been fortunate enough to hear her sing this live on a number of occasions and I have always been left in tears with the emotional depth she brings to the song and by the beauty of her voice.

Yes, KD is very real and genuine, and her performance here demonstrates that. Thank you for your wonderful reaction.
KD Lang sings with her whole self...Body, mind, and soul. Thank you Kasian for another wonder-filled reaction
Did you see Leonard Cohan? She bowed to him. Respect. Ann Murray was also there.
him..
Favorite!! Love her. Love him. Love the songwriter, the singer, and the song. Perfect
Have never been able to understand the words until she sang it. Perfection.

She is phenominal and does this song the justice it deserves. A beautiful soul.
What a wonderful authentic reaction, thank you!
This kd ‘s best rendition of this song. Leonard Coren has said nobody could sing it better. I’m very proud of kd . My Canadian heart is touched by her voice.
One of the best female vocalists of all time. Her voice is so rich and heady. I love her so much. What a gift to us all 🎁👏🏼💖🙏🏼
I absolutely love KD, easily 20 years before her time. She is a rare vocalist that could reach 4 or more octaves, not really showcased in this song. Give Pulling Back On The Reins a try.

Thank you for giving this performance the reverence it truly deserves. Great reaction.

Hello young man. K D is the real deal. You should hear KD sing crying
Thanks for your Deeply Honest reflection. Love.
Was 3rd row from the front at this show. Her last hallelujah made me slide off of my seat.
The absolute best rendition. Makes me cry every time I hear her sing it
