OMG, thank you both so much for walking us novices through using a whisker pole!!! It's a lot to take in, but also all there I know. I'm just happy that I finally now have something that I can pause, rewind, and learn from! Thank you!
Hey Chris! Glad you enjoyed the whisker pole demo! We thought that might be helpful to some! Hope you had a good weekend!
I got my Bug A Salt salt gun on order. I recommend one for any boat. It makes dealing with flies and wasps that much more enjoyable.
Hey Chris! I just looked this up....amazing! You are going to have some fun with that! 🤣
😊😮😮😊😊😊😊69😊😅t😅😊😊😊😊😅😊
Brooke, your sewing has come a long way! It looks great. Proud of your perseverance. Drone shots were awesome as usual❤
Haha, yes, it has! I remember a couple years ago trying to hand stitch a rip in our old dodger. I'm pretty sure I poked the needle through my hand more than through the material. Love you!
Thank you for excellent explanation of whisker pole process
Glad you found it helpful!
Cardoncito! What a cool anchorage. Boat work in paradise for sure.
The Sea of Cortez is a beautiful place!
Great video. Nice sail repair Brooke. Yep you earned your sundowner for sure. Good job Gary turning disappointment and anger into laughter 🙂. Outstanding channel 👏.
Thanks, Trent! Gary always knows how to make me smile! Hope you have a good week!
Super explanation, you have made your boat a perfect home for long passages.
I wish you the very best.😎
Thank you very much! We are proud of our little floating home!
Loving the new pole and you did a great job on the sail repair, no need to doubt yourself.
Thanks, Ian! We love the new pole! It is such a valuable upgrade for us!
I have stitched leather with one of those "things". I think I have blocked the real name from my brain, LOL. You did great Brooke!!!! Beautiful. Oh ya, sorry! You and the stitching job, LOL
Hahah, thank you! yeah I try to block that 'thing' from memory as well. I can't imagine stitching leather! Yowza!
This episode stands out as one of the best. So many topics covered in depth with amazing visuals just made it so much fun to join. The whisker pole segment was documentary clear, almost training film concise yet light-hearted and engaging. Better still, it reflects the hard work you put into the refit. Every other segment got better from there. The drone shots were amazing, the interplay of slow-mo close-ups and sweeping panoramas were nothing short of ‘weapons grade.’ I don’t really think I eve know what that means. More like this!
Hi Don! Oh wow, thank you :) Really happy to hear you enjoyed this video. See ya for our next episode!
I agree with this totally. Early in the episode I was hoping you would use the drone to show that picture. Bravi tutti!
Ah thanks, Robert! 🙌⛵
Seamstress extraordinaire !!! shakedown indeed , keep the good attitude .
Hahaha, thank you! Hand stitching, my favorite...🙄
Great job on the sewing! Very impressive! I’m loving the music you guys are using! Another fabulous editing job!
Ah thanks, Hannah! I remember the first time I had to hand stitch our dodger when we just started three years ago....I've learned a lot since that day!
HI, like always, enjoyed this video a lot.. learning how to use a whisker pole and its benefits, to seeing Brooke be way more confident in sewing, which made me thing of the episode where you guys where somewhere in the Caribbean and Brooke was learning to sew one of the cushion's and she disliked it a lot.. good progress. cant wait to see next weeks episode.. keep on rocking one life..
Hi Ana, thank you! Ha, yes my sewing skills have come a long way since the Caribbean days!
Between stinging and biting bugs and ripped sails, as well as old lines, one really has to love sailing to do it full time. LOL!
Haha true, but the sea lions and epic sunsets help to offset the other!
Just wanted to say great job sewing that sail Brooke! Don’t doubt yourself, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Another great video! Can’t wait for the journey south! See you next week 😁
Hey Tammy! Yes, you are exactly right about that! I've come along way since I first attempted to hand stitch our ripped dodger when we left a couple years ago. See ya on the next episode!
Your bimini looks absolutely fantastic!
Thank you! We are thrilled with it!
One Life is looking so AMAZE...and that Cockpit enclosure is just absolutely gorgeous....I mean, I followed the whole refit with great anticipation and felt Brooke's emotions, sadness, frustration, joy and happiness. (I'm retired, I dont have s**t to do!) put it is great to see the big picture of your hard work paying off!
Thank you so much, Freddy! We appreciate you following along with our journey and so happy to hear you are enjoying our videos. See ya next video!
Thanks for sharing your repairs with us. Always good to see how folks go about it, as well as dealing with the ups and downs.
Cheers!
Thanks, Christopher! Glad you are enjoying our videos!
Can't wait for the big cross! You guys got this! ✨️🤌
Thank you! We are looking forward to sharing our crossing video(s) with you!
Thank you for bringing such lovely visual content across my iPad screen. It’s immersive! That along with your energy makes for a great sailing UA-cam channel. 👍
Hi Ray! Thank you! We are happy to be part of your iPad screen!
24:44 Wow this time lapse is just a phenomenal shot. The dimples in the sand justaposed with the cotton ball clouds is breath taking. Beautiful composition!
Hey BJ! Ah, so glad you noticed that! We thought it was a pretty epic shot, too!
Just catching up. Thanks for the whisker pole lesson.
Hey Rick! We really appreciate you going back and catching up on some of our older videos! 🙌
Great job on patching the sails. Thanks for a honest view of boat life, it looks so picturesque sailing around, but a lot of hard work goes into this life, dealing with constant on going repairs/ maintenance, and all the bugs, driving you into the cabin at nights.
Thanks for sharing with us👍
Hi Paul! Boat life has it's ups and downs just like any life style! Thank you for coming along with us out here!
Your onelife looks very good under sail she has a beautiful look you both built her back to better then ever i just love too watch you back at sea
Thank you, James! We are pretty proud of her!
Kirsten, the amazing sailor from south Africa who had one the Golden Globe solo race around the world, used a system that I believe used two twin sails and two poles, and called twin sails for downwind. Very fast.
Yes indeed, twin poled headsails is a great setup for ocean sailing but requires quite a bite more equipment than we currently have!
Captain u r a good teacher
Thank you, George!
Hi kids, that new cockpit covering looks amazing and probably feels fantastic to be inside, so clear and protected! Excellent addition to your boat. Thanks for sharing this journey with me/us, peace to you both.....
The new cockpit enclosure has been so nice to have. A great upgrade to keep us dry and cozy! Thanks for coming along with us!
Once again, another entertaining video from Gary and Brooke, thanks again for taking us on your journey and look forward to more adventures! Cheers!
Thanks, Donald! We appreciate you coming along on this journey with us! See ya next video!
hello , i am a coaca beach did of 75 years old. i will be back on the water soon in a trawler.i love your chanel keep going , god bless you both .cpt bob mungall
Hi Captain Bob! So cool you are in Cocoa Beach! Thanks for coming along with us out here. Hope you can get back on the water soon!
And It seems you folks have an amazing camera quality going, very very nice thank you!!
We bought a new camera for our journey across the Pacific! Happy you noticed!
Very cool idea of marking where the stiches go. I've hand repaired different things over the years and that was always my problem getting a nice even stich. It's such a simple idea that helps make it look professional.
Thanks, Jack! I always get annoyed when I see how 'ugly' the repair looks afterward. The marks really helped with that!
When our group goes jeeping out in the middle of the desert, we sometimes get overwhelmed with bees, looking for the same thing, liquid. What we have found is that if you take a bit of water and put it out away from where you want to be, they will follow the water and not you! Give that a try next time you get overwhelmed by flying things with stripes!
Jeeping in the desert sounds like a blast! We actually tried putting a sponge filled with water on the back deck (when we were headed north in the Sea of Cortez last year) and no idea why but half of them ended up dead on the sponge. 😭 Wondering if the sponge had some sort of toxic coating on it.
Great video guys! Love the drone footage especially while under way! We learned something new as well. We like how you take out the bobbin that comes with the speed stitcher (which always gets stuck!) and just run the full spool of robline.
Thanks for watching, guys! The Swell Pro has been great for those risky drone sailing shots! And yes, it took me forever to realize it is much easier to use the speedy stitcher without that pesky bobbin!
Awesome video, Continued prayers for you. Be safe.
Happy Sunday, Gibb! 😎
Let’s GO!
The pacific is calling you two!
Fare sails and fast travels
❤ from 🇨🇦
That's right, LET'S GO!! Thanks for the love!
It’s pretty amazing how crossing an ocean differs from coastal sailing. The pucker factor….the what ifs, etc…all build. I cringe at those who just accept the risk of worn rigging, injured sails, the list goes on. Nice to see you guys show a level concern on your channel.
Hey Mike! Yeah, a bit of different feeling when you are thousands of miles away from land and help. Of course, there are always things to do on a boat but we do our best to keep our critical systems and parts maintained the best we can. Our lives depend on it.
I'm really looking forward to your Pacific crossing. Many of us watched and enjoyed Delos' crossing but yours will be fun to watch I'm sure. Your progress and preps for the crossing are going well. Thanks as always for lettingus follow along.
Hi Terrance! Thank you! We are really excited to share our crossing with you as well! We appreciate you following along with us! Cheers!
After seeing your Pacific crossing journey from La Paz to The Marquesses, it is nice to see how you prepared for it.
Hi Frederico, yes we put a lot of time and energy into preparing the boat and ourselves for the crossing!
Thank you for replying folks😀
Really interesting episode. Enjoyed seeing the settiing of the whisker pole as well as the various repairs and adjustments that seem to go with the territory. Also, One Life is a very good looking vessel with all sails up! Thanks for sharing with us.
Hey Steve! Thank you! We think she looks pretty good with all her sails up too! ⛵💙
Great job on the sewing of the sail. The Sea of Cortez is so beautiful!!!!
Thank you, Donna! We agree, the Sea of Cortez is a gorgeous place!
This is great TV! That drone must be fun and a relief- knowing it will float. Good job on the sail!
Hi Joe! Hope you are doing well! We missed you on our last couple Patreon Zoom calls!
Fantastic episode, very much enjoyed it. Both of you are incredibly skilled in all the different aspects of sailing (including boat maintenance!). Bravo!
Thank you so much! We are learning new skills out here all the time. Glad you enjoyed this episode!
❤🙌🏼best of luck guys. Safe travels
Thank you, Jorge! Hope you have a good week!
Great training on whisker pole. Always a pleasure seeing you guys.
Thanks, Jay! See ya next video!
Have to admt your amazing commitment to this life is inspiring...you both seem to work so well together
Thank you, Scott! We really appreciate it!
Ready, set, Go!!!!! Woohoo!!! Cant wait for this trip!
Woohoo! Can't wait to share it with you!
Great video! Awesome sewing job! Thanks for sharing
Thank you! The sewing turned out much better than I anticipated!
Thanks for your video, Brooke and Gary, it's helping me calm my nerves today. As usual, I'm watching from Queensland, Australia.
Cool, I’m watching from beautiful East Tawas bay in Michigan, USA. Hopefully will make it down under Someday cheers, my friend!
Hi Di! Glad our video helped ease your soul a bit today! Cheers!
We also hope to make it down under one day!
@SailingOneLife yes, I also saw your email to me recently and will reply back over the next couple of days. :)
No hurry! 💙
Great job guys!
Thank you, Paul! :)
Nice job Brooke for a hand stitch job it turned out very nice
Thanks, David! I was pretty happy with the stitch job!
Awesome video. Great filming and editing. Beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Lois! Glad you liked this one! See ya next time!
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice work guys ‼️ 🎉 I'm soooooo excited to see your dream happen and watch you start the Pacific adventure 😊 Brooke is gonna be all smiles..........a far cry from the damaged rudder experience. ✌🏻️ See you next time.✨ 🌊 💨 ⛵️ 🏝️ 👙 🌞 ✨
Thank you, Richard!! Hope you have a good week! See ya next week!
Great training enjoy the workout!
Thanks, Eduardo!
The unique skill set you guys have.
Thank you! We are learning new things every day out here!
That whisker pole setup you added during the re-fit is pretty sweet.
Thanks, Larry! We have been using the heck out of it! Definitely happy we decided to install it up the mast. It makes it extremely easy to deploy and store, even in rough seas.
@@SailingOneLife When we build Bluebird I'll be following your lead on that!
Thanks to you both. Love the video. All the best. 🦌
Thanks, Dennis! Hope you are doing well!
Good episode. Beautiful drone video and like how you two flow together.
Thank you! The Sea of Cortez sure provided us with some gorgeous drone shots!
Just found your channel and its great. Sailing offshore, the spiniker pole can get hard to handle as the boat rolles. You may need to adjust your deployment method for offshore winds.
Good luck.
Hi there! Welcome to our channel! Yes, the pole is a bit more challenging in big seas. You'll see us using it during our ocean crossing soon!
great episode... thank you!
Thanks for watching & commenting! :)
great video.. thanks for sharing your journey.. stay safe. x
Thanks for coming along with us! ⛵🙌
'It's a boat!." immortal words.
😂😂 So true!
Thanks for a Great video this week! Looking forward for more.
So where are you planning to sail too? If you come are way here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Let us know. You have a place to stay here on the Big Island. My wife is a Great cook and the Ocean Views here in Ocean View Hawaii, from our lanai are to die for.
Ok until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!
Hi Bill! Thank you so much! Maybe one day we will make it to Hawaii. For now our plan is French Polynesia to New Zealand with a few stops in between. We appreciate you offering to show us Hawaii!
The tilt is real.
Getting that lean on!
So beautiful
🤩⛵🤙thank you!
Myself I would have just given them a drink of water and off they would have gone. OK it looks like you got the telescoping whisker pole down. Now I want to see you guys do it blind folded!😅
Hey John! Hahaha I don't think we are ready for the blindfold test yet!
thanks
Thanks for watching, Jerry!
That was one well hydrated, and caffeinated, wasp.
😂😂 sure was!
Get a yellow jacket pouch and you will be glad
❤ from 🇨🇦
We've never heard of one of these, we will have to look into it!
Good to see you and your video. Better to fix that sail in the calm of Mexico versus on the open blue, so nice job. Curious as to where you are currently? Ed
100% agree! Stitching on the ocean would be zero fun! We are in Maupiti, French Polynesia.
Looks complicated 🤔🙃🤪😂🏴
Good job both!
It was a bit of a learning curve the first time but once you do it a time or two it becomes pretty easy!
Awesome drone shots! Who catches it under sail? Can"t wait for more from the South Pacific!
Hey Dave! The sailing drone shots were shot with the SwellPro Splash 4, it's waterproof so Gary just lands it in the water ahead of the boat, we slow the boat down and then we grab it with a boat hook on the away by. The landscape and other drone shots were shot with the DJI mini 3 from land, so Gary just lands that on a flat surface nearby.
Very informative video. One thing that surprises me is that the lifting bridle isn't designed into the pole assembly ? So sorry to hear your mainsail ripped.
I guess the bridle could be permanently attached, but I think the main reason for it not to be is storage. It's easier to completely remove the 20 foot line than to have to tie it up and secure it while still attached to the pole. Our mainsail is over 20 years old, so a few rips and tears are to be expected we guess! Stitch it up and keep on going!
Yippee ❤
💜💜 thank you!
Note: The pole should be in the upward position and not the way you executed it, so that when you pull the rope upward the hook will simply open and the hook will fall.
Whisker poles are generally best used with jaws down, like we showed, and follows the recommendation by Forespar. Spinnaker poles are generally used with jaws facing up. The case could be made that for a whisker pole without a furling jib/genoa, you'd be better off using it with the jaws up.
Seriously nice work. I feel like I want to find a good video on how to do that. Gary is starting to look like "Captain Cave Man" at this point. That much hair would drive me nuts and it had to be hot. Anyway, as always, loved your video.
Hey Thomas! Ha yeah we call this the 'Pirate Gary' look haha.
I've used those hand stitchers for many years and your stitching looks very nice and well placed , it will outlast the sail for sure , just apply some bees wax and your all set ! Question ... Did you do both sides ?
Thanks, Dave! Yep, I did both but guess we didn't get a video of both sides. That speedy stitcher sure is handy despite my dislike of using it! :)
When you were running with the whisker pole, why didn't you flip the main to starboard and balance the sails? Wouldn't that have helped your speed?
Yes sometimes we do put the main out on the opposite side and go wing-on-wing. We find it doesn't really help much though, as we can't swing the boom out too far because we are cutter-rigged with check stays. We can't really get the main out perpendicular to the wind. Our genoa is almost double the sail area of our main, so most the power comes from up front. We're quite well balanced with just the genoa poled out, since its pulling the boat straight forward. In really calm conditions though wing-on-wing is definitely one of our favorite sail plans!
❤❤
Back at ya, Cindy! 💙💙
Another awesome video detailing your trip and the small prep job still needing to be done before crossing the "PACIFIC"!!!!!!!! "OCEAN"!!!!!!!!! Sorry I had to yell that out. Brooke excellent {hopefully) sew job on the Main. When you were putting out whisker Pole it seemed like a lot of steps, How long in real time does it take and do you actually need two people to set it up ?
Stay safe and catch your next video
Whoop whoop!! PACIFIC OCEAN!! We like to yell it out too! The set up of the whisker pole goes pretty fast now that we have the system down. Of course it depends on conditions but on average we can have it up with the sail out in about 5-7 minutes. Gary has deployed it a couple times on his own in favorable conditions but has yet to try it solo in rough seas.
@@SailingOneLife It would be interesting how long solo sailed can put a whisker pole out and then in
Good idea, we will try to include this in a future video!
Great videos as always. Did you work out why the mainsail split like that?
Thank you! :) Yes, when we were furling down our main into the boom (we have an in-boom furler) it jammed. Unfortunately, we didn't notice it and continued to furl which put a lot of friction on the unfurled section on the sail and viola, torn sail! 😭
I have been following you guys forever and have you ever been robbed or anything stolen from you like pirates are just thieves??
Hi Russell! Thanks for coming along with us on this adventure! We have been super fortunate and have had no theft or piracy issues.
Yeeew!
🙌🙌
🙏🏻...
Thanks for the prayers, Smee! 💙
Could you set up a 2nd whisker pole to hold the stay out on starboard? Obviously some kind of spinnaker would be ideal, but an additional whisker pole is more economical.
Yep, totally! Maybe some day we will have a second pole!
Great sewing for sure. I am worried though about why the tears happened. Is there an obvious stress concentration there or what? Cross your fingers!
Thank you! :) Yes, when we were furling down our main into the boom (we have an in-boom furler) it jammed. Unfortunately, we didn't notice it and continued to furl which put a lot of friction on the unfurled section on the sail and viola, torn sail! 😭
Sorry, just from a learning perspective. May I ask what your thoughts might be as to why the sail ripped? Looks like it was right along a seam. So perhaps a latent manufacturing defect? Again, just trying to learn. BTW: Love the stich mark idea. I think (well I know), that would totally help me as well. Thanks so much!!!
Our main sail is on an in-boom furling system and when we were furling it down (of course, when we weren't filming) the sail jammed in the furler which put tension on the portion of the sail that was still in the track. We continued to try to furl the sail without realizing it was jammed and that's when it ripped. Also, our main sail is around 15 years old and probably due for a replacement so that didn't help our case.
Just wondering how does "One Life" handle when you are fully stocked with food, fuel etc? Compared when you are at the end of an ocean leg and are much lighter?
Great question! Interestingly, we have never noticed a performance difference when we are light on fuel and provisions.
If you pole out two headsails must need a lot of ropes.
Yep! Poling out two headsails would be great but requires a bit more equipment then we currently have.
Have you practiced running Wing on Wing, downwind?
We actually show us running wing on wing to La Paz in our next episode!
I completely understood how you hoisted thw whisker pole but forgot everything a second after you secured it back at the mast lol
Haha, yeah it took us a time or two of 'doing all the steps in reverse' to remember how to do it too!
Where have you guys been.
We've been sailing! And editing when we have time! We put out a video last week if you didn't catch that one go take a look!
Sorry, complete novice question, I'm sure. If you needed to change the whisker pole from the part to starboard side, would you need to re-route the sheet to the jib clew as well?
Yes, if we needed to change it over we would need to unclip the working jib sheet and switch to the other sheet. We find it's pretty rare we need to jibe the pole since we can go about 30 degrees off dead-downwind to either side without a problem when it's set.
👍🧿
🙌⛵
I was wondering how this worked
It's pretty easy to deploy after doing it a couple times!
How far is Calico Skies from you guys?
Hey there! In this video Calico Skies was about 450 miles north of us in the Sea of Cortez.
Do you have a Code 0 in your sail inventory?
Hi Michael! Unfortunately, no. Maybe one day!
How often do you replace your rope ?
This is the first time we have replaced our running rigging. According to the maintenance log from the previous owner it was replaced in 2015. We hope our new lines last 8 -10 years but it all depends on UV conditions and usage.
It would be great to see Gary shave all the hair on his head (except the eyebrows) when you all do your equator crossing. Don't worry at all, it will grow back as sure as there will always be boat projects. It is really enjoyable watching you enjoy One Life out on the water. Thank you
No it most likely won’t 😅
Hey Craig! LOL I can't even imagine Gary with a shaved head right now! Back in his 'corporate Gary' days he used to always wear it super short!
Do you have a spinnaker?
Yes, we actually have two onboard! ⛵🙌
@@SailingOneLife Sorry to ask that question. I remember you practicing with them recently. I don’t remember you trying the pole with them though. I’m getting old and trying to sell this business, some days remembering my name is difficult. Liking forward to clearing my mind while sailing. 🧠🏄♂️🏊🎣⛵️.
No worries and that's a valid question. We do not have a spinnaker pole, only the whisker pole for our genoa. Hope you can sell your business soon so you can get out sailing and clear your mind! ⛵🙌
Please replace your American flag! Keep replacements on hand please. Show some pride! OK lecture over. Retired vet, can't help myself. LOL Brooke, you are beautiful!!!
Yeah for sure! We do keep spares and change it when it gets pretty rough, you'll see a new one on there in a coming episode. No matter which ones we buy they only seem to last a couple months in the sun and wind before starting to shred.
