- After a roller coaster 3 day sail from Honduras to Mexico, we arrive in Marina Chiapas. Our hands are full with lots of boat work from troubleshooting our fuel issue from when we broke down at sea to fixing our transmission shaft seal leak. This nomadic lifestyle is super rewarding but it does not come without a bit of hard work. This episode shows a bit of both sides as once our boat projects are finished, we take a couple days off to relax and enjoy our time in an Airbnb with a couple sailing
friends!

I could be mistaken, but I think the pick up lines should be the 2 fittings in the removable plate, so the plate could be removed to clear the pick up tubes, and the fittings welded to the tank should be the return lines. Also, the shorter of the 2 pick up tubes is for the genset, so if the generator would run the tank out of fuel, the propulsion engine would still have a little fuel to get you to a dock.

I spent a lot of boat deliveries florida to the caribbean cleaning fuel systems until I finally learned that startron's tank cleaner really works. Now when I do a pre-delivery checkout of a boat I fill the tank and add the tank cleaner, at least a month before heading out. Since then I've never needed to replace filters or de-gunk draw pipes while bashing upwind at high revs...unless I get lazy and fill without using the baja filter because I think, well...I'm in Miami, the fuel should be good....
Good job with the rear seal replacement, always a tough job unless you can pull the trans.

I'm jealous too, for that excellent access to be able to clean your tank.
We've got a 750 liters or 200 gallon gasoline tank and the only removable part with six screws is the fuel level sensor. Two air vents, one big filling line and two output lines, one for each engine, are soldered to the aluminium tank.
I'm sure that our 30 year old fuel tank must be full of algae, fungi, vinagre and all kind of bacterial life, now that they put up to 10% ethanol in the gasoline (same proportion than in a white wine that turns into vinegar if bottle gets opened for a couple of months). Any suggestion, before the output lines get clogged, will be very much welcome.
Okay, I'm only 14 seconds in, but immediately recognized that marina. That is where "Vet Tails Sailing Chuffed" is. Sheddy is a vet who owns a steel sloop and offers free services to communities as she sails along (with a little surfing thrown in.) If the rest of this video doesn't reveal what what I think would be inevitable, do try to connect with them - they are just fabulous people. Update: I just watched their "live chat" from the 17th. They are in Australia (where Sheddy is from) and are expecting to start back to Mexico in a week (which would be today.) So, I assume their boat is in the marina, and all the residents and staff in the marina would know them - they've gone through some travails in trying to get Chuffed moving again. But, if you are still there, do say hi.

Diesel fuel treatment helps to keep that algae from forming, also filtering for water/debris is a must when filling the tank. Fight that a lot in our line of work, water is your enemy.
Lots of BIG projects that you guys were able to knock out, awesome job! Changing a rear seal sucks on a normal transmission, doing this in a boat with super tight work areas just adds to the challenge.
Looks like you all had a great break from your boats, a few days away helps recharge the brain. Great footage of the area, thanks for those shots!

bugs in diesel only started occuring a few years ago. its in hte diesel. You will need to filter this really well.

Have any of you sailors tried the diesel biocide additives? When they dropped the sulfur out of diesel it caused thus problem. The sulfur was an existing preservative (if you will ) for the fuel oil. Anyways, the growth you experienced in the tank is from extremeophiles. These are little bugs that grow in nasty environments. We have had some luck with the NAPA branded biocide for diesel fuel here in the great lakes. We find less clogging in the polishing system when adding this. The only sure way to avoid the problem is to source kerosene that still has the sulfur, pre 2007 kerosene. When an old farm tank goes up for sale, if the farm has been out of business for 16 years, that's good fuel left in the tanks.
Hey Pontoon Rob! It seems quite a few sailors use biocide additive and we've known others who have never used it and never had problems. We are going to buy some biocide additive to add to the tank we just haven't been anywhere that carries it yet.

I am driving a truck in North America and I also have to deal with bad diesel.. it happened to me as well getting algae. I use a bottle Killem once a half year or a year I keep my tanks clean.. happy travels

@@SailingOneLife it is very irritating that when you stuck.. for me fuel and coolant and Air (those two you have plenty ) always needs to be on order.. diesel is the only thing you are get you have not control over mostly.. but that Killem diesel treatment did wonders for me and I use it to maintain every half year or so as well with adding that into my 300 gallon tank

Word of advice pour some Seafoam bottles in that tank that prevent that sludge and algae in the diesel tank.

You must add a fungicide to your fuel, Killes is the best but others will work, the fugus will spoil your fuel and reduce its power to your engine

Cleaning the fuel tank ! Not fun Brooke ? Ha I had same thing on my Catalina 30 in Puget Sound but, I was more lucky. Only 18 gallons and the handhole provided easy access to the entire tank interior. One of the best maintenance items I was forced into doing; no fuel issues after that.
We agree, definitely a maintenance item that makes a huge difference!

What a great video showing how resourceful you have to be when you don't have one key socket. It's good to see the step by step logical processes you went through to solve your problems. Interest your yanmar box is connected through a flexible coupling to the prop, all IP yachts don't use these flexible couplings for some reason and are direct connected. My friends SP Cruiser snapped 3 bolts on the prop coupling is one trip. They broke because he'd not adjusted the engine mounts in 5 years of ownership for prop alignment. Apparently you are supposed to adjust / check alignment regularly, so IP say. A flexible coupling would have prevented this, why IP don't use them is a mystery to me .
I suppose I could have started by just smacking the nut with a chisel and hammer, but I always try the least destructive methods first. The flexible coupling is a lot more work, especially for alignment, but I think it's well worth it. When we wrapped a line and bent our strut in the USVIs, the shaft was fine, and I attribute that partly to the flexible coupling. Alignment is still important, but a little bit of extra tolerance is beneficial. 👍

I'm working on this sort of issue right now. I'm using an enzyme fuel treatment which breaks up the slime . Then I'm running a small filter and a circulating pump to polish the fuel. Btw those 12 volt pumps make fuel transfer easier.
Hey Enrique! Ah bummer you are working on the same issue. Hopefully this note finds your issue resolved! Unfortunately we didn't have access to a 12v pump. I bet that makes fuel transfer much easier!
@@SailingOneLife I had the very same issue in the late 80s on my Islander 30 . Really caused an issue late at night in a storm San Francisco Bay. had to sail in on a handkerchief sail .. It was that black stuff in the suction Tube. since then I have used biocidal Fuel treatments and never had much issue. However the fuel in my tank now is pretty old and I inspected just as you did and saw some early stages. muck on the bottom. I bought a Blue chemical fuel cleaner. (Enzyme based) They warn to keep extra filters since it breaks up the slime into fine particles. So that's why I'm polishing with a 12 v circulating pump and external filter.
Hi my name is steve, Boat SV Darika a 33 nauticat. 90HP ford lehman and 2 x stainless 300 lts tank total 600 lts diesel.
But I have always had diesel problems. Blocked pick up pipes both tanks and diesel bug algy. Cleaning out tanks with that amount of diesel became problematic.. So i made a fuel polishing kit. A spair fuel filter housing with glass water trap. a 12 v powerful diesel pump mounted on a board with on off switch. to hoses suction one with a straight pipe on the end and the other put back in the diesel tank.. Works like a vacuum cleaner. don't have to be in a dock to use it. Even anchored at sea you can polish your diesel up.. Together with some fuel additive works pretty good and not so messy as cleaning the tanks. This problem does not go away and needs to be kept on top of

They sell algae additive you will need to use it even though you have cleaned out the tank. Algae is very hard to get rid of in fuel system

I bet that smelled awesome!😜 As several others have mentioned here using an Enzyme based diesel fuel additive keeps this at bay....A few ounces every other fill up is all it takes. Also if you pop that large access panel off the top of the tank once a year and visually check and see if there is any sludge buildup sure helps. Not fun!
I'm still super jealous of you guys! Sailing life looks sooo in tune with nature! Sure there's good days and bad days, but even that's just natural. Some day when I grow up.....😜

You are right, a visual check every so often will be super helpful to monitor and make sure it doesn't happen again. We also plan on buying additive, figure it won't hurt to add it! You need to to find a good fuel stabilizer to add into your tank. Now that bio fuel is becoming more prevalent this will become more of a problem. Truck drivers have been having the same issue and they use a lot of fuel and fill there tanks daily

Funny you are having fuel tank crud and line blockages , as I have been working on that problem for ALL vessels with dirty tanks and hope to come up with some ideas to helps us Sailors.

@@SailingOneLife I have a simple solution to keep fuels clean and NO WATER or contaminates to the regular Day tanks or Big Tanks= you have ONE Tank that takes on ALL fuels for the Main engine and even a Generator, then on that 1st tank you set up a fast/powerful fuel polishing unit and Centrifugal expellation of water and other contaminates which reduces filter changes, Once ran through and checked for purity you transfer to the other tank or tanks and ADD Diesel fuel cleaner/injection cleaner.
The Tools I will offer will be much more than a cleaning kit consisting of rubber gloves and a reem of paper towels, you will never have to go armpit deep into your tanks.
Oh my!! You totally lucked out with that tank access!😆So many times I'd find that the tank and pickup/sender access was buried somewhere where it was difficult to service. Great job getting the coupler seal done. The only concern I have is that you got the output shaft nut tight enough. Like you said, keep an eye on it. Maybe revisit it after a long run to be sure. Do you put a spray shield on the stuffing box? A piece of water bottle plastic and a ziptie works perfectly. I miss boats even though I hurt from 30 years crawling around them.

I didn't show it because it was nearly impossible to film in there, but I tapped the output nut back to exactly where it was. There's a collar on the nut that gets indented into one of the nut grooves to lock it in place.
Tank access was very high on my list when shopping for our boat. I had to literally crawl inside yacht tanks to work on them in my engineering career, so I knew exactly what I wanted to avoid 😂

Happy for you that the repairs went well. Curious how long it had been since your tank was cleaned and how long the bad transmission seal lasted.
We really don't know when the last time the tank was cleaned. We've owned the boat for about 3 years and this is the first time we have done it. Same story for the transmission seal, that could have been the original seal installed in 2003 as far as we know.

Hey Dirk! We have seen a couple videos of people who set up fuel polishing systems. We've decided just to give the tanks a good clean once in awhile along with some diesel treatment and hope that keeps them clean! Happy New Year!! 🥂

I was a millwright at a manufacturing plant which had machines from USA, England, France, Germany, Italy, China ... six different electrical systems, about two dozen different sets of screwdriver bits, sockets, wrenches, etc. Worse, the manufacturers of these machines sell individual screws, nuts, bolts, and tools at ridiculous prices. Like $200 for a box of ten screws plus $200 more for the proprietary screwdriver bit. And always even more $$$ if the machine is an older, discontinued model.
It took about 2 months, but my teams' "side project" was to strip out every nut, bolt, screw, fitting, fastener and replace it with a standard item from the hardware store. I had to do a lot of milling, lathing, grinding, welding to modify the machinery.
When it was all done, you could service every machine in the building with a single tool cart. There were still a few (very few) irreplaceable and dimensionally-critical weird items, they and their tools were packed boxes locked inside the machine. All told, this saved almost $5K per month in replacement tools and parts, plus it freed up many hours of technical work (once frustrating, now productive).
I don't know how practical or expensive it would be ... but if I were doing this sailboat lifestyle then I would standardize every machine on board and keep the necessary tools (even the weird one-off tools) in the engine compartment. More cost up front - and I know it ain't cheap, lol - but the time and money it frees up over the years (perhaps for multiple owners) would make it worthwhile.
Hi there! Thank you for this comment and yes, we agree. Great advice! It would certainly be nice to have every machine reworked to be able to use standard parts. We are trying to do this overtime with the items we can. But you are right, it takes lots of time and money!

Diesel bugs, So diesel bug poop? Nearly 40 years ago one of my first jobs in Saudi was to take a tire to an 18 wheeler, the driver took a chisel to the nut holding the wheel on making a socket useless, every nut had chisel marks, so a long standing procedure in the ME. Stone age tech works sometimes.

Hey J.A. we could not find any biocide in Chiapas but it is on our list of things to buy and add to the tank. Hope to find some in Puerto Penasco.
Brooke, for what it's worth, I knew a girl in High School who would have been able to clear that fuel line, but that's a different story. Happy Gary was able to clear and work through the issue. Always good to have an engineer onboard! Good luck getting to Annapolis! Ed

That multi filter fuel cleaner, if u use this every time then will u rarely have dirty fuel issues?
Yes, that is what we should have been doing! Lesson learned. From now on we will use the filter for every fill. It is a bit of a pain because it takes much longer to fill the tank but much less time in the long run!

From my other comment: Blow out the line with Your breath. NO mention of CLEANING the pickup tube. Does He EVER do a complete fix? NOPE!!!! NO wonder there are always problems down the road.

Why is it always the "guy" who does all the engine work on these sailing channels? Isn't there some woman sailor out there who can do this work? Talk about gender roles! I think the closest I've seen is Gone with the Wynns. I can believe Nikki could do some serious engine work but maybe I'm wrong?
There are plenty of sailing women who do engine work - check out the channel WhiteSpotPirates for one example. Yes, in our case Gary does most, as his background is in mechanical engineering but it certainly doesn't mean that I don't participate in 'blue' jobs.
