The lead singer for Evanescence has possibly the best female singing voice I have ever listened to. It just enchantingly pulls you in for some reason.

This song was actually composed by Ben Moody and it is about his grandfather… Amy composed the bridge. In the video Ben appears mourning her loss, while she is a spirit/angel, if you notice her feet never touches the ground and she looks ethereal… Amy composed songs about the death of her siblings… Hello and Like you, both songs are about her sister who passed when she was a child, and Far from heaven is about her brother, who passed in 2017.

This song is almost 20 years old now and came out when I was in my early 20's. It's a song that defiantly hits harder today. Back then, to me it was just a great song by an awesome singer, now it's a very powerful emotional song. I can now relate to the lyrics, but not just towards a specific loss or relationship with someone, but towards my memories, my moments, and my mind. The older we get, the more the memories hurt, not just the sad and/or bad ones, like losing a loved ones, as I have lost both my parents over the last twelve years, but the good ones as well, like having a wonderful childhood, first getting marriage, your children's births and them being young, these memories of life, moments of time, will never be as great as it once was, as certain moments that will never be experienced again like they were when we lived them. My memories, both happy and sad, are slowly killing me as I can't let go and depend on them so much.
I think this song as a whole is about the weight of grief or loss. What’s left after someone who mattered so much is gone.
No matter who you’ve lost, this song says what you feel. Perfectly.
Another song of hers that's absolutely laden with emotion is "Hello." It's written about her sister that died when they were children, and it's so emotional for her that she has never performed it live in any of their concerts.
Honestly, every song on that album (Fallen) is absolutely amazing.

This song was written by guitarist Ben Moody, lead singer Amy Lee and keyboardist David Hodges. Amy Lee said this song is Ben Moody's song. The lyrics of the song refer to a spirit that haunts the memory of a grieving loved one. Similar to several other songs written by Moody, the lyrics of the song are based on a short story he had previously written. Moody said that the song talks about "a spirit staying with you after its death and haunting you until you actually wish that the spirit were gone because it won't leave you alone. He dedicated the song to his grandfather, Bill Holcomb. Amy Lee expresses her feelings through the line, "Though you're still with me / I've been alone all along, and that "'My Immortal' is a song of pain and despair caused by the loss of a family member or very close friend and how it drove her to the edge of insanity. You said you thought it was about a lost child, but to me it seems more like a lover or spouse. Amy Lee said in an interview about the video: "When you see the video it's really amazing. We're all separated and wandering the streets looking like it's the day after a funeral, with Ben in a suit and bare feet, and I'm never touching the ground. I'm sitting on a phone booth or lying on a car, to hint that I'm dead, that I'm singing from the dead. It's all about separation."

From the concept of the video. She looks like a spirit that is in limbo because she never goes home to him, no one is interacting with her, and he looks like he is sadly missing her. Perhaps, she can't let go and move on, so she's there haunted by her love for the man.
But then no one interacts with him either. The band comes in at the end of the song, but then if you notice, it looks like maybe he is playing with the band on piano, but he isn't in the same room with them. So maybe it's to be interpreted from both points of views. But I just got the feeling she was talking about someone who passed away, or she left behind and can never be with again. Just haunted by the memories.
I'm sure the real reason has been discussed, but the imagination can lead to your own interpretation of the message of the song/video.
It's just hauntingly beautiful and sad. Her voice gets you in the feels.
Please keep going into their hits. Her voice is so beautifully unique. And this band, started a subgenre of alternative rock, like Nirvana. Their style has been copied ever since they came out.
She covers "Going to California" by Led Zeppelin, and it is almost as great as the original version. Amy Lee is a force of nature that cannot be compared to anyone...Simply amazing! 🔥🔥🔥

Back in the day, husband used to ask me to sing this (my voice was better then). After he died, I couldn't bear to listen to it. I'm just now beginning to be able to hear it without breaking down.
Being from Arkansas, I legit cant believe a part of her life was spent growing up in Little Rock with her voice.

Weirdly, I call certain songs "death songs". The song either came out, got played, or I heard around the death of a loved one. My dad died Aug 2004. This song & "Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer " were his. My mom's was a song by Eric Benet named "Harriet Jones". She died on a Sunday in March 2012, the song came out that week. She'd have hated. I was going somewhere and it came on. I laughed and cried. It was her middle name (that she hated) and her maiden name. I'd have played it to get a rise out of her, but I did at her cubby hole.
She is a beauty with an amazing voice, and that percussion beat is great!

Her sister died when they were children, so many of her songs reference her sister. Though this song is about an ex boyfriend the imagery you were picking up wasn't her losing a child but her sister as a child.
But she said it was actually Ben Moody who initially penned the song about his late grandfather.
Like I said, the video is excellent and moving.
She's the "spirit" in the video. The guy walking around was her husband/boyfriend who's still mourning her. The song, while sung by her, is intended to be from his perspective.

this is perfection... the song... the voice... the video... and Amy is gorgeous! She's ridiculously underrated! But this song is one of the greatest ever of its kind. She actually killed herself this is why she has bandages around her wrists, shes a ghost. This is also why her feet never touch the ground and the kids in the playground don't see her. Its also why she's in white and why she appears in different random places..she's a spirit.
Lithium is also a really good song super powerful lyrics and vocals. Top 5 song by her if not top 3!

This song was mostly written by ex-cofounder Ben Moody (guy on the piano), and Amy (singer) wrote the bridge. The song was mostly his and about his grandfather. Some people speculate it’s about Amy’s sister, who she lost when she was around 6 years old, but it’s not. ‘Hello’ and ‘Like You’ are about Amy’s sister.

I don't know why anyone would say the video explains the song, when it really doesn't. It adds a theme not present in the song. She becomes a subject. Not touching the ground, laid out, with her wrists covered in cloth. I have no idea how that direction came to be, but to me, it obscures the lyrics, and confuses them. I still think it is beautiful.

The song refers to her ex but the video refers to her sister who died when they were kids. She doesn't touch the ground in the video. Earth-bound, heaven-bound? Her sister watching over her? Up to interpretation.

I may be wrong Kabir, but it sounds like you're falling in love with Amy, her music and her amazing band like all the rest of us out here. This particular track was from way back (2003 I think) but the band's incredible songbook has grown so much since those far off days. Far be it for me to suggest other Evanescence tracks to react to, but just in case you fancy delving deeper into their work, try 'Lost in Paradise' or 'My Heart is Broken' or 'Call Me When You're Sober' or 'Bring Me To Life' just as starters. The song is about the ending of a romantic relationship she had with Ben Moody, the guitarist in the band. They met at the age of 14 at a Summer camp. The started the band together. Soon after the breakup, he left the band as well. He is in the video and he is the guy walking around in a dress shirt and seated at the piano.

The lyrics in this song are not about any personal experience by Amy Lee. She commented at one point that this song is hard for her to connect with, because it’s not anchored in a true experience.
