This song was mostly written by ex-cofounder Ben Moody (guy on the piano), and Amy (singer) wrote the bridge. The song was mostly his and dedicated the song to his grandfather. Some people speculate it’s about Amy’s sister, who she lost when she was around 6 years old, but it’s not. ‘Hello’ and ‘Like You’ are about Amy’s sister.
When I was a youngster I picked up info that this song is for some close friend and family member who's gone, but dude, this info is a CIA level

I think you slightly misunderstood the meaning behind the lyrics. She is talking about being haunted by a loved one who has died. The second verse gives it away.

Amy Lee helped her former boyfriend Ben (other singer/rapper member) to express his grief from losing his grandfather, he wrote the song and she sang it.
She’s an Angel, her never touching the ground doesn’t mean she’s a ghost / dead spirit; I don’t know where thats coming from🙄.

The Story Behind the Song
“My Immortal” was written by Evanescence’s lead vocalist Amy Lee and former guitarist Ben Moody. They wrote the song in the late 1990s, and it was included in the band’s debut album, “Fallen,” in 2003.
In an interview with MTV News, Lee talked about how she came up with the song. She said, “I started writing it when I was really, really young. It was written about a friendship that I had that was basically the kind of friendship where you’ve been through everything together and you always will be best friends. And then one day, for some reason, it just ends, and you’re not sure why.”
According to Lee, Moody helped her finish the song and gave it some of its signature characteristics. She said, “Ben came in and added that haunting guitar part that’s throughout the song, and it added a whole new layer of emotion to it.”
I listened to Evanescence when I was a teenager. One of the most influential rock/metal bands of 2000s.

An epic song, this one. You should try 'Bring me to Life'. Another epic song. You may well recognise it a little bit like you did with this one. It was HUGE when it first came out. Amy Lee's voice is sublime.

It’s about a loved one that has passed. In the video Amy is portraying a ghost haunted by the living. But it was really dedicated to Bens grandfather.

It's interesting to see your take on what the video represented when it automatically said to me (back in the day, and still now) that it was about losing a loved one and trying to get through the grief. I'm fairly sure that Ben wrote most of it about losing his grandfather, and Amy added the bridge section. There are two songs which are dedicated to or about her losing her sister, though I'm sure this one could be taken that way too, if not for the video. Loved the reaction, regardless. "Bring me to my life" is another must-listen and is arguably their most famous, though this is just hauntingly beautiful (no pun intended)
It's a pretty old band, oooo listen, most of the songs are super track, they know what they're singing and playing about.
Amy Lee is amazing. Evanescence has great stuff: Lithium, Hello, Bring Me to Life, Going Under, to name a few. Amy Lee also did some great collabs: Broken with Seether and Break In with Lizzy Hale are well worth hearing.

In Argentina this song and others by Evanescence were heard a lot, I don't know where it's from but it sings very well.

You probably have heard it sometime in the past. I had heard it before, but for some reason, driving home one day from work, it came up on the rotation on Pandora, and Amy Lee's voice just cut straight to my heart. I started to tear up. Good thing I was almost home.

This song is one of many versions the one you heard was the offical rock version. There's also the album version which is piano only. There is another version that wasnt offically released and was created in the late 90's the only thing that's different is the bridge and the ending piece.
What makes this song spcical to me is i use to sing this with my piano teacher since i was a child our voices would echo around the studio.

D, I'd be amazed if you truly never heard this song before - it was EVERYWHERE when it was released (2003), and is one of (if not the) most popular of Evanescence's songs. Amy Lee, the singer, has an absolutely gorgeous voice - and it never hurt that she was beautiful as well (gray eyes and black hair is a combo that always gets me!).
There were several hits off their first album, including this song, Bring Me To Life (music video), Tourniquet, Taking Over Me, My Last Breath. Another big hit that came off a later album was Lithium (music video). While the band has had ups and downs, some form of it is still in existence, and the constant feature through all of its time has been Amy Lee.
NOTE: if I don't mention a music video associated with a song, it doesn't necessarily mean there isn't one, just that I have never seen one.

One of my favourite bands for ages. They had such a unique sound. Unfortunately for me they kind of lost their appeal after The Open Door album. I just didn't get the same buzz from the songs.
