@@tim_is_random The word "carried" something has been going around for years so this is not a Mortal Kombat thing. And the only thing I liked about the movie was Kano (And the first 10-15 minutes of the movie) which is why I said he carried the movie and his back hurt too much so he lost. So I didn't copy it from anybody (And if I had done so idk what would have been the issue since that is what most people making jokes on comments do but that isn't even the case).

Shang Tsung only took Sub-Zero and Goro back meaning they both will return. We already know sub zero becomes Noob Saibot by means of sorcery so Goro could comeback. I mean he has come back in the games also.

The biggest mistakes they made in my opinion are:
1. They brought a non-existent character into this Movie and made him even the lead Character.
2. They made a Movie about a fighting tournament yet didn't include the actual tournament but a prequel before the tournament.
3. They had the choice to choose so many different locations from the MK series yet had them all stuck inside that temple for most of the time.
4. The continuous switching from one fight to another once Raiden teleported them to these different locations, why not show one fight at a time and then move to the next?
5. The CGI GORO that looked like a cheap rip-off from MKX Goro, I would have rather found a tall actor and Masked him to look like Goro rather than use CGI for him.
6. The location of the fight between Cole and Goro was so dull and boring why on earth would you have them fight inside a farm?
7. The absence of Johhny Cage why would you put someone like Reiko or Nitara and completely leave Cage out who was one of the main characters since the first game?
8. They messed up most of the characters, especially Liu Kang, how can you treat the Champion of Mortal Kombat like a complete Loser and side Character when he was actually supposed to be the lead character?
9. The plot armor that has been mentioned already made this whole movie look like a Superhero movie rather than a fighting movie, why the hell would you need Arcana to give Jax his metal arms or Coles's pathetic Aquaman suit?
10. They didn't stick to the actual story from MK but made up their own version of Mortal Kombat,
They could've made Johnny Cage the lead character
They also overused the references just to provide nostalgia to the fans even when it doesn't fit. Like, when Scorpion uttered the iconic line "Get over here!" even though he couldn't speak English.
Yup kinda reminds of a game called Last of Us 2 where they introduced a new character that no one even wanted at all and they forced us to play as that character who killed off the main character in the first game playing her part and gave us pointless flashbacks about her. She kills off the main character from the first game and we're supposed to care about her when they didn't even bother introducing her in the best way possible and we're supposed to like her? The same thing with Cole Young here, he kills off Goro, who is a champion for God knows how long and we're supposed to like him? Mind you bro is not a good fighter at all. The directors and writers didn't bother introducing him in the best way possible.
My point is that both of those characters were like the main characters who were poorly written, not introduced in the best way possible in order to make people care about them, showed up out of nowhere, and the biggest problem is that no one wanted them at all but the writers wanted to like them which hurts the whole narrative.
Cole’s power was LITERALLY plot armor when you think about it 🤣.
The fact that Cole, a nobody, killed the 9 time reigning Mortal Kombat champion is just fucking insulting. It made me want to vomit. So disrespectful to the mighty Goro.

Like 98% of the movie was an insult to the MK Universe character's. Including the Earth Realm with almost zero development, and who the fuck is Cole Young and why should I as a mortal kombat fan care about him... assuming he even acted well, or had good dialogue? I was scratching my head through the movie about this main protagonist. I thought like Iron Man had made a guest appearance when he got his power.. and dramatically overstayled his welcome. This character has no business being the centerpiece of a Mortal Kombat film.
Please... is there a single Mortal Kombat gamer that thought this was a logical plot line to tie the story together? This video makes a lot of good points but I think he undersold the fact that... if you take away Cole Young, (and all the poor wooden acting and dialogue,) you have a lot more time to develop the MK Lore story, as well as the character's MK fans actually care about, instead of making them out to be a joke.
Hey Hollywood, are us MK fans a joke to you? It seems so. I hope Scorpion comes to the real Earth Realm and fatalities Hollywood for good.
I hated that the opening scene with Scorpion and Bi Han looked so promising and made me excited for rest of the movie, but it was all downhill from there. Its just so frustrating that the movie could have been so much better.

@@yveltalpoderoso1303 A studio not understanding a product and blatantly using it for a cash grab, characters you feel nothing for, moments that try to pull emotion from you that wasn't earned, lackluster action and choreography. Feels about the same to me. But oh yeah, I did enjoy Kano and Kabal, so it's a little better. But I'll still never watch it again.
The one thing I couldn't stand about this movie was how Sonya Blade investigated all the realms, characters and explained what Mortal Kombat was. Raiden is supposed to do that!
Also, why is Sub-Zero working for Shang Tsung?
And if this movie has everyone training to get their "arcana", how does Johnny Cage unlock his in the sequel?
Sub Zero is Bi Han who is a more evil Sub Zero unlike his brother. I mistakenly though Bi Han turned into Noob Saibot already from how he's working with Shang Tsung.
@@RajSingh-vf3bw I know this Sub Zero is Bi Han and is more evil than his brother, Kuai Liang. And he only becomes Noob *After* Scorpion kills him in the tournament. He never works for Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Shinnok or anyone else.
I imagine he will eliminate another beloved Outworld character effortlessly. This film insulted so many great video game characters, including Kung Lao, just being "Eaten" by Shang-Tsung (Wow if he's that all powerful he certainly dwarfs Raiden, why doesn't he just rinse repeat to all Earth Realm characters? Then we have a movie that lasts under 5 minutes.) You can't even begin to try to make sense of anything that happened.
The only reason i can see that it got a halfway decent review on IMDB is enough normie zoomers liked the CGI, Gore, Fight-scenes.
Also, I may as well mention this because it peeved me, and no one has mentioned it. Did they HALF-ASS Kabal's costume? I could literally put together a more intimidating-looking outfit for Halloween.. Like wtf?
This movie seemed to me like it was written by a Mortal Kombat hater, and the entire thing was to make a mockery out of the source material. What a let down.

I know we were all normies at the beginning, but we learned and got invested in the story characters and lore of the story. And that's why I'm so angry, coz they fuck up so many important details.
Like how they killed Goro: Who's gonna be Shang Tsung's champion that's been killing been winning the tournament 9 times in a row. Also why the hell is Sub Zero wearing black, even though he's *Not Yet* Noob? Where's the Lin Kuei? Did he abandon them, or is he still working for them?

The BIG problem is who the Hollywood studios hired to write the story and script. Apparently this was his first big studio movie. FIRST ONE. As in of all the writers in the industry they picked an inexperienced one.
Yup the director only worked on commercial before this film I think. And the lighting artists seems very inexperienced as well.
You also have to consider how Cole was mandated by the Studio so the writer HAD to add him in the story and focus on him.
If Greg Russo is purposely trying to make Annihilation and the second season of Mortal Kombat Legacy look good, it’s time to stop writing and consider a different career path. That’s all I’m going to be saying about him.
@@WoodSageSeaSalt Cole is not the only problem of the movie, you make it sound like it is. They could have written a better story even with Cole at the center of it. Art Lean from the 95 movie is better written than Cole and he is also a character outside of the game: sure, he is secondary character but you really feel for Johnny when Goro kills Art because the foundation of their relationship in the movie was believable.
Same problem of the Mario Bros. movie: two directors that only worked on music videos, deep down disliked the game's story, wanted to "put a personal spin on the movie" while lacking experience and ignoring external opinions. They never learned.
After reading & hearing Cole Young's armor being called plot armor I've accepted that to be it's name
I mean...he literally gets it due to reasons...at the EXACT moment he needs it, and it gives him the exact abilities he needs too.
If you can find a more apt description than plot armor, I and several others would be interested in hearing it.

@@kimanireid9617 I'll be blunt. As an MK fan, it's bad. If you just want some action and nothing more, you may enjoy it better. If you go with friends, you'll likely enjoy it more, due to sharing the experience and potentially ragging on the movie.
So...your mileage may vary. I'd argue it's worth seeing once, no matter your viewpoint.

I feel like a series would be better because that way you don’t have to try and cram everything into an hour and a half or two hour movie. With an episode series, you have enough time to build up character development, the plot, etc.

Because Shang Tsung ist from Earthrealm. Raiden is only allowed to interact against Outworlders like Goro. Shao Khan should have sent only Earthrealm Asassins against the Earthrealm Heroes. My Choice: Shang Tsun, Sub Zero, Kano, Kabal, Sektor and Erron Black.
its pretty sad that a movie from 95, that had only 2 games to work with, had better story and by far better characters, than this film that has 11+ games to work with.
And that movie wasn't violent which is a huge part of mortal kombat and the 95 movie got some things wrong like Kung Lao being related to Lui Kang but it's sad that this is probably one of the best mortal kombat movies we will ever get.

@@Jay-og4yb I rewatched it and I've got to disagree. It's a ton of fun, has a great cast, creates an atmosphere and deftly adapts the baseline MK story to a three act structure that leaves you wanting to see the characters again.
There's some hokey elements and dated CGI, but it knows what lane to stay in and has the confidence to be dumb fun.

As a huge Mileena fan, i was really disappointed with how they treated Mileena's character. First of all she doesn't even use most of her iconic moves, her ball roll, her tele-kick, her sai throws. They made her seem so useless and just a skilled fighter that can teleport. We barley got to see her full character, such as her teeth. Half of what makes Mileena special is her teeth, and we didn't even get to properly see that. They also made her character seem so dumb. For example, After she revealed her tarkatan teeth she teleported to attack cole and ended up just chomping down on his weapon for like 10-20 seconds not even attempting to try and bite somewhere else or release herself. It's a shame to see such an amazing character with amazing potential go to waste.
I thought the exact same thing. After that “teeth reveal “ she teleports to bite on his sword? When she was already at his back and could have just jumped on it and bite down on his neck? Just seemed so stupid! Oh and then Sonya just automatically had her so called arcana naturally from the jump when everyone else had to gradually improve or have a sudden breakthrough to get theirs? This is just a few points out of the many to this crap of a movie! This movie sucked soooo bad. I hate that the 90s films were better and more to the source material than this. They had sooooo much material to choose from! Just a fqn shame!

The sequel is bringing Cage and I think Cage will be more of a focus in the sequel than Cole, I think. I hope that's the case

Arcana has a main point in this movie since it's the main power source for MK warriors. we know the characters need effort to awaken their arcana.

Yes, likely getting their "Arcana" by Outworlders jobbing to them in quick fights, insulting many more of the Game Franchise's historical characters. Yay, fun! As an MK video game and lore fan I may just skip part 2 unless I check reviews from actual MK fans first next time. Not Doomer Zoomers who don't seem to know what quality in anything is (including film) since they're a generation that unfortunately that came out of the womb into "Clown World."

Raiden says in this movie I can not interfere during the tournament. Liu said we have to wait for the next full moon for it to start. Raiden could have backhanded everyone, and you could have just showed the good guys training. And Raiden was not being respected. At least in the original, Tsung bowed to him(respect). This movie was awful

One thing that really bothered me is that they made a big deal about unlocking your powers but sonya got them the second she got kano’s mark. Literally as soon as she got them raiden teleports her then she blast mileena. Your video was also great and took the words out my mouth.

In short, the producers didn’t give a shit about the rich universe and story of mortal kombat.
They only wanted to make a quick buck, trying to focus on the “gimmick” that MK has been known for: gory fatalities.
So the movie was basically it: a chance to see gory fatalities in live action.
The only thing I liked in this movie was Kabal, he's funny and they've killed him so quickly.
Idk about killed I think he got his severely burned story from that scene

The worst part is when Cole's daughter asked her dad to give a 4 armed monster uppercut after seeing her dad with some crazy super power. I don't know how anyone will see something like that happened and feel cool like it's the usual fight in the ring
It's mortal kombat. The only person that seems to have real trauma or reactions in the game is Jax lol

The uppercut part was the game move where you crouch and do the uppercut. It was just shoehorned in that way

Personally as a big MK fan, it was a 3 or a4 for me.
It felt like the pieces were there, but they chose not to make them fit. My Problems are.
1, The only characters they got barely/somewhat down was Kabal, Kano, and Kung Lao.
2, Cole and his family was a waste of time, if they wanted to do washed up fighter with a family, johnny was there for the taking, he has a wife and daughter in the actual source material.
3, Reiko And Nitara
4,Scorpion and Subzero are awesome AF, but it felt like the first 7 minutes and last ten minutes of their story, felt completely different to everything else in between.
5, The Quick Cuts
6, Not following any of the rules of the game and tournament

They were trying to take everyone out before the actual tourney.. I believe the sequel will revolve around the actual tourney

Actually, the movie gave enough hints that his fight style advantage is, that he can take a beating. They called him the human punching bag and the promoter that booked him said it’s not a fight because for a fight there has to be attack and defense. So his power fitted pretty much perfect in the character, or how he is portrayed.

Imagine making a movie that gets less praised than it's 1995 counterpart...what a letdown and no offence to our Australian movie directors but they've always kinda been lacking and it was expected for me to say the least.... Lets be honest this director had so much potential to make it an amazing movie but he just wants it to go to waste and it really pisses me off to no ends!
Lol this whole Arcana thing in the Mortal Kombat movies had me like “oh, so it seems they love the Persona game. I didn’t know I was watching a Persona and Mortal Kombat cross over”
the problem with the arcana is that it deletes the importance of factions and backstory... what made kano's implant special is that he got it from his Black Dragon's weapon traffik. Jax got his arms and Sonya his lasers from the Special Forces. Johnny got his powers from his ancient blood, etc... In this universe they all got their powers because the shaolin gave them to them. Condensing everything into one just makes everything feel weightless and childish. It's like if Captain America, Hulk and Tony Stark got their serum and armor from Asgard.

They made a big ass deal that Cole Young is always quit at the last minute instead of keep fighting. So I thought oh well maybe at the final moment the movie will make him grow as a character but no, he just doesn’t have nothing to give.

In my opinion this movie should have been a subzero and scorpion origin story showing there upbringing and introducing quan chi and leading to a special forces movie introducing Sonya, Jax and Kano then Shaolin Monks giving light to raiden, lui kang, and Kung Lao and then the actual mortal Kombat tournament where the villain characters could actually die in a respectable manner.

Im Australian and thought that Kano's character was the most irritating one out of them. I agree that the character development was weak too and would have liked to see SubZero and Scorpion more in the story...liked the action...hated the aussie....wish Hiroyuki Sanada had more screen time as he is one of my favourite Japanese actors and should have been given more story.

I will agree that leaving that Arcana part out of the story could have left room for more areas to focus on. Even the original 2 didn't go over this. As fans, it should be understood that we know what they can do. If they wanted to touch on this, it could be a flashback or a ritual on a character's introduction. Ex: Liu Kang meditating by a camp fire. Motions with his hands and small flames pop up on both hands. Done. I lover how they did Scorp and Sub at the beginning. We know what they can do.

I feel like too many people went into this expecting MCU quality when Marvel is the only one who has made that work. The best parts of the movie were fatalities, easter eggs, accurate outfits and references which was all I was expecting out of it. Therefore I enjoyed it, but my brother and I were cracking jokes and having fun the whole time, just like you're supposed to do with bad movies.
Fans like BruskPoet don’t waltz into something Mortal Kombat related and expect MCU like quality. They just want an adaptation that is faithful to the source material because it will come to life before their eyes and it will be a different experience of something they love, and they did not do that with this film and I fear they have no intention to do it for the sequel if it keeps getting worse.
Perfect breakdown. Something felt off about it. Im an OG MK fan.. The story telling was horrible. It was hard to follow and didnt play off the history of the game, or from the previous movies. The MK11 game story was WAYY better than this..

That is always the case John sad but true. The studios don't trust the fans to not spoil the whole thing before seeing it. A big franchise like Jurassic Park doesn't need to give the whole movie away just flash the damn logo and people will want to see it. Recently I was pretty happy with Venom 2 trailer not giving us anything but letting us imagine what it might be like. When Woody Harrelson signed on I was sold no need to give the movie away in previews. Most previews new movies just give the best scenes away like Zootopia DMV scene etc.

I just watched it, as a Mortal Kombat fan since the MK1 on Sega Genesis, and a fan of the original, although admittedly a B-Movie, at least for the Era, it was 10x better than MK 2021. Hollywood never stops insulting this game. The wooden characters and bad dialogue were laughable.
Every time Raiden and Shang Tsung had to talk to each other was embarrassing. It sounded like they were just repeating lines phonetically. do they speak English?
Considering the fact that they're supposed to be Japanese, English wouldn't be their first or native language.

Exactly what I have been saying since this movie was first revealed,a live action mortal kombat movie should either be a TV series or something like the snyder cut because a regular 1hour and 50 minute movie isn't going to be right because of the amount of lore in mortal kombat. Because half the time, the industry either just doesn't care, or doesn't have faith of any kind in the source material. The latter makes me tilt my head for so many reasons. I mean, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie from last year was my favorite movie of the year, and it wasn't 100% like the games either, but it was still a pretty good film imho.

But outside of the MCU universe... today's movies based on video games,comic books,or anything dealing in fantasy is butchered because directors and producers feel they need to inject real life social and political concepts. Like diversity or equality or some shit like that. Instead of making the movie straight from the source material. Regardless of how times have changed or what they were based on.
