I know this video is old, but, I just wanted to point out that Raiden didn't actually contradict himself. I haven't watched the movie, but, it seems like Raiden never directly intervenes in a fight. He can do anything, as long as he isn't interfering with a fight. Unless it wasn't shown in this video, I don't think he ever interferes with a fight, by giving the good guys an advantage. He only ever teleports them while they aren't ACTIVELY engaging in a fight, all he does is teleport both sides away from each other. It's not like he teleports them while they are in the middle of throwing punches. So yes, what Raiden says makes sense in that context, otherwise, he would have simply teleported the bad guys into a lava pit. It's like in the games, I think the 9th one, where Shao Kahn breaks the rules and THEN Raiden could interfere.

They made one of the most hate-able characters in the series relatable, likable and sympathetic, and they made the hero we’re supposed to identify with an identity-less tired archetype. They truly failed at their job.

They should've just been developing the characters they have already, not the ones It needed. Cole could've been interesting, but they just wanted walking plot armor. I think he would’ve just gotten stronger. Cole’s plot armor arcana is teased in the beginning when the Ref says that he’s not good at defense. So, his arcana included armor that defended him from attacks. Is it plot armor? Yeah. But it does make sense. Edit: I’ve just realized that the arcana takes your weakness or emotion/personality, and that’s how your power is selected.
I know it's been a while - but the answer is pretty much what you already said. His arms would just turn metal instead. Hell, this is literally how Jax'es powers worked in the Old MK games - the Prosthethic Arms is something they retconned later on.
In a deleted scene, Raiden talks to Liu Kang and Kung Lao about the fighters and doing anything to help them find their arcanas which means your “Him being cruel” theory is (maybe) correct

Pai Mei was a cruel teacher, he was harsh and pushed past physical limits but he did that merciless teaching to push his students to be so much better and without him The Bride would have been killed real quickly during the film. So in summary: Pai Mei had an actual point to his insults and cruel methods and Rayden was just an awful teacher and a completely incompetent moron.
Your movie review was a thousand times more entertaining than the actual movie 🤣 I admit that I laughed uncontrollably during various parts. Everything was glorious. From the editing to the voice-over, to the Cole Puns and the highlighting of how much this movie made zero sense. Thank you for being so hilarious.
Two things that really bugged me: 1. You can very clearly see the Johnny Cage flyer in the beginning of the movie when Cole is at the gym. And then later they pull a "I KNOW WHO THAT IS" at the end like it wasn't in plain view of the camera earlier. 2. In the same vein of "Cole doesn't know Japanese"... How does Scorpion know English? How does he know how to say "Get over here"? Was he using Duolingo in the Netherrealm for 400(0) years?
Bi-Han speaking english took me out of that first bit of the movie Like yeah he could have known english already (he knew enough japanese to interrogate the family, and he clearly travels, so knowing english isnt impossible), but WHY would he have even used it at that point?? also Scorpion on that duo grind 🦉 not surprised the owl is even in the netherrealm. hes probably an elder god or something. Maybe learning "get over here" was what finally let Scorpion respawn on earthrealm to fight Sub-Zero
Also I forgot to mention: I don't think Mileena's actress should have played Mileena. I think she would have actually been better as Skarlet. You have a better personality fit to have this movie's version of Mileena actually be Skarlet: being able to detect the blood of the "chosen one", the more serious demeanor, not needing all the backstory to Kitana (so it doesn't have to be cut from the movie in the first place), and being lent to Shang Tsung to follow his orders (given that I think Skarlet's slightly more dispensable to Shao Kahn than Mileena, since Mileena's supposed to be the heir to his throne).

They'd have had to rewrite this character completely. This whole movie messed up by not having Kitana being the debuting Edenian. Now Mileena is dead and we won't see ANY proper interaction with her and Kitana unless in the next movie (if there is one) introduces Quan Chi and revives her as a Revenant.
@@Facade953 I have to slightly disagree on that too, Edenians were always supposed to be more based off of vaguely Asian ethnicities; MK11 kind of messed it up when they heavily reworked Kitana and Sindel but Jade’s facial structure didn’t change. Which is why the actress would be a better fit for Skarlet since she’s not even truly human. Or if they do time-travel bullshit in the next movie, she would have been a fantastic Jacqui Briggs.
Kano is a great artist, actually... Like, as an artist myself I have to point out the obvious but interesting elephant in the room; *he’s legitimately good!* Kano has such a good style rooted in realism! The details are wonderful and the fact he did it just in pen makes it more impressive - I want to see Kano’s artistic side explored somehow. Maybe not in an awful movie. Perhaps in a comic? Kano is one of my favorite villains of all time and this is a good example of humanizing them. Kano likes to draw! That’s such a cute fact about him. Is he self taught? What’s the story behind his (seemingly) causal interest in art? He’s talented, I like that a lot.
Also I wanna say, as a polyglot (I speak over ten languages, including Chinese), it was such a pleasant surprise to see and hear you correcting the language issues in the film. Americans *whom only speak English* would _undoubtedly_ run into such a language barrier; being so any error would fly over their head so cheers for you being able to understand and correct!❤🎉

Johnny Cage always acts like the audience in every game and movie he’s in. He’s always the naive one learning and adapting to the Mortal Kombat world. We didn’t need Cole.
I honestly think Cole should have been added when the MK3 plot line was happening. Only reason why is because it’ll be more interesting if someone who survived the invasion was around. The characters that we love did their stuff already, and it’ll bring something knew to the screen that they haven’t done before
@@jackalcoyote8777 we all know and that's why the Arcana is stupid, Liu Kang and Kung Lao use chi/ magic for their abilities but because the studio wanted an explanation for the powers for ALL the(earthrealm) characters they made the Arcana making jax's arms, sonias energy rings and kanos laser beam, all be magic instead of tech which is what made them unique(it also helped make them stand out/characterized them a bit)
Just goes to show just because you're R rated with blood and guts doesn't mean its automatically good. the first MK movie still has such a charm to it to this day despite having little to no blood at all.
Fun little theory i just came up with, MK2021 is the very first timeline Kronika created, and because she was still inexperienced, when trying to make Johnny Cage, she accidentally made King Coled, which she immediately retconned out of existence in the next timeline. I feel like Sub-Zero is more of the boss in this film than Shang Tsung. There isn't even an epic final fight with Shang Tsung, it's with Sub-Zero. Raiden just teleports Shang Tsung away.

Pretty sure his origin was that he was immolated by Outworld’s extermination squads during the invasion, so while he may not have been directly allied with Raiden’s defenders of Earthrealm, he still wanted his revenge on the people that tried to kill him. If I’m remembering right he was later retconned to be a Black Dragon member, and he eventually took over leadership of the faction after Kano died, but even then his goal for the clan was to cause complete anarchy and chaos which kinda makes him more neutral as opposed to truly evil I guess? Like I said, could be totally wrong on that cause it’s been a while since I played the 3D era stuff, but I think I prefer him that way.
You know something cool and could of been an incredibly good shock for the audience. Let Reptile sneak attack the team by doing a brutal fatality to Cole Young in the cabin scene. What a great subversion in the film to kill what people thought the main character was. Which would of worked perfectly the film would of course had to change and could of been supporting Sonya who couldn’t be in the training as she didn’t have an acharna. Could of been a good character to follow. And to even push arcana’s out the way, you could have Raiden have a line about Arcana’s help channel your chi to use your inner potential but with enough training you can unlock it without one. Hence Johnny Cage is already a beast like other characters in the movie who you dont see their arcana done.

Should be renamed to Mortal Komplaint: The Rise of Cole. Such a lifeless blandfest this was. I'll stick the 90s film and Scorpion's Revenge as well as its upcoming sequel. Those actually have the goofy tone and energy from the games which is what makes them Mortal Kombat.

I'm convinced Cole was meant to channel Scorpion and that would be how he was brought back into the movie. That seemed to be what they were building up to.
You called the opening fight fine, but choreography aside why is Sub-Zero just letting all of his fellow clansmen be killed by just one guy? If Cole was born with the symbol that denotes a champion, the tournament occurs every ten years as usual (unless they stated otherwise), and the chosen champions can be tracked, then why wasn't Cole tracked down and brought into the fold during all the time before now? Why does Jax walk into the obvious trap?

They should've just been developing the characters they have already, not the ones It needed. Cole could've been interesting, but they just wanted walking plot armor. Again you're aiming wayyyy to high for this movie, with there being more flaws than just characters by themselves. Having Johnny would at least make this film a 6 to 6.5/10 which is, and honestly where it belongs.

I think he would’ve just gotten stronger. Cole’s plot armor arcana is teased in the beginning when the Ref says that he’s not good at defense. So, his arcana included armor that defended him from attacks. Is it plot armor? Yeah. But it does make sense.
Edit: I’ve just realized that the arcana takes your weakness or emotion/personality, and that’s how your power is selected.

Two things that really bugged me:
1. You can very clearly see the Johnny Cage flyer in the beginning of the movie when Cole is at the gym. And then later they pull a "I KNOW WHO THAT IS" at the end like it wasn't in plain view of the camera earlier.
2. In the same vein of "Cole doesn't know Japanese"... How does Scorpion know English? How does he know how to say "Get over here"? Was he using Duolingo in the Netherrealm for 400(0) years?
Bi-Han speaking english took me out of that first bit of the movie Like yeah he could have known english already (he knew enough japanese to interrogate the family, and he clearly travels, so knowing english isnt impossible), but WHY would he have even used it at that point??

I think she would have actually been better as Skarlet. You have a better personality fit to have this movie's version of Mileena actually be Skarlet: being able to detect the blood of the "chosen one", the more serious demeanor, not needing all the backstory to Kitana (so it doesn't have to be cut from the movie in the first place), and being lent to Shang Tsung to follow his orders (given that I think Skarlet's slightly more dispensable to Shao Kahn than Mileena, since Mileena's supposed to be the heir to his throne).
That honestly is a fantastic idea!! XD

This whole movie messed up by not having Kitana being the debuting Edenian. Now Mileena is dead and we won't see ANY proper interaction with her and Kitana unless in the next movie (if there is one) introduces Quan Chi and revives her as a Revenant.

@@Facade953 I have to slightly disagree on that too, Edenians were always supposed to be more based off of vaguely Asian ethnicities; MK11 kind of messed it up when they heavily reworked Kitana and Sindel but Jade’s facial structure didn’t change. Which is why the actress would be a better fit for Skarlet since she’s not even truly human.
Or if they do time-travel bullshit in the next movie, she would have been a fantastic Jacqui Briggs.
Kano is a great artist, actually... Like, as an artist myself I have to point out the obvious but interesting elephant in the room; *he’s legitimately good!* Kano has such a good style rooted in realism! The details are wonderful and the fact he did it just in pen makes it more impressive - I want to see Kano’s artistic side explored somehow. Maybe not in an awful movie. Perhaps in a comic? Kano is one of my favorite villains of all time and this is a good example of humanizing them. Kano likes to draw! That’s such a cute fact about him. Is he self taught? What’s the story behind his (seemingly) causal interest in art? He’s talented, I like that a lot.
Also I wanna say, as a polyglot (I speak over ten languages, including Chinese), it was such a pleasant surprise to see and hear you correcting the language issues in the film. Americans *whom only speak English* would _undoubtedly_ run into such a language barrier; being so any error would fly over their head so cheers for you being able to understand and correct!❤🎉

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but wasn’t original timeline Kabal always played as a sort of anti-hero, rather than an outright villain?
Pretty sure his origin was that he was immolated by Outworld’s extermination squads during the invasion, so while he may not have been directly allied with Raiden’s defenders of Earthrealm, he still wanted his revenge on the people that tried to kill him.
If I’m remembering right he was later retconned to be a Black Dragon member, and he eventually took over leadership of the faction after Kano died, but even then his goal for the clan was to cause complete anarchy and chaos which kinda makes him more neutral as opposed to truly evil I guess?
Like I said, could be totally wrong on that cause it’s been a while since I played the 3D era stuff, but I think I prefer him that way.

What a great subversion in the film to kill what people thought the main character was. Which would of worked perfectly the film would of course had to change and could of been supporting Sonya who couldn’t be in the training as she didn’t have an acharna.
Could of been a good character to follow.
And to even push arcana’s out the way, you could have Raiden have a line about Arcana’s help channel your chi to use your inner potential but with enough training you can unlock it without one. Hence Johnny Cage is already a beast like other characters in the movie who you dont see their arcana done.

Such a lifeless blandfest this was. I'll stick the 90s film and Scorpion's Revenge as well as its upcoming sequel. Those actually have the goofy tone and energy from the games which is what makes them Mortal Kombat.

You called the opening fight fine, but choreography aside why is Sub-Zero just letting all of his fellow clansmen be killed by just one guy?
If Cole was born with the symbol that denotes a champion, the tournament occurs every ten years as usual (unless they stated otherwise), and the chosen champions can be tracked, then why wasn't Cole tracked down and brought into the fold during all the time before now?
Why does Jax walk into the obvious trap?
The tournament is suppose to be every 50 years, so that could be the reason.

I'll give the film credit. They accurately portrayed the elder gods. Literally just a bunch of useless idiots who don't do anything. If they did then going by what shang says. Then the elder gods should have stopped him. But then again we couldn't have a movie that...actually made me bored trying to feel for these characters and fights. Seeing scorpion in his full get up was pretty good but. My god only the final fight I got invested into. Cause.
