What? Bi Han is a bad guy in many tellings of the first MK. MK9 he's bad, working with Shan Tsung against earthrealm. MK scorpions revenge he's also working with Shang Tsung in MK1. MK95 he's bad again. Bi Han is bad more than he's good.

I agree with everything accept Goro, the 1995 Goro was a practical effect that they dumped most of the budget into and they put alot of effort into to try and make it work. It was apparently a nightmare to work with and kept breaking on them. To tbh it actually looked kinda menacing and brought some feeling of dread onto the screen. The 2021 Goro just looks like dog shit! 😂
The director said he didn't put Johnny Cage in the movie because he didn't want a white man as a main character. That's all I need to know. I'm not watching this crap
And yet Jonny Cage has always shared the spot light with the already very diverse cast from both the original game and 90s film. Heck, ya can even argue he's a secondary character to Lu Kang like Kurt Russel character in Big Trouble In Little China.
They pretty much ripped off the intro from that fan made series 'Mortal Kombat Legacy' which actually was pretty good for what little budget they had. All in all it was pretty bad Raiden was just horribly miscast and some of the 'fan service' just left me cringing.
If I had to pick between them keeping the same actor for Raiden or the "squeeler" as Shang Tsung, give me Raiden. I could not into Shang Tsung for ONE SECOND. Literally not 1 second was he a believable Raiden. They should have cast Ken Watanabe as Shang, EASILY. No brainer.
Not having characters like Johnny Cage and Kitana in this movie was a cop out, the 'Cole' placement and dragon tattoo gimmick was dumb, as much as I love MK as a fan, this movie has its issues. Just like the MANY other fighting game movies before it. In any case, just stick to the 95' MK movie, that and the Street Fighter 94' movie, timeless entertainment no matter what fighter you dig.
I was watching this film and Cole’s arcana wasn’t showing up and I remember sitting there thinking: “Please don’t be something ridiculously corny” which is when Goro hit him and his ‘power armour’ lit up and that’s when I lost the remaining hope for the film.

I prefer the original Goro compared to the new one. He looked goofy, but at least he felt like he's a part of the environment and trying to make a practical design as believable as possible during the mid 90's was an achievement in itself. CGI Goro just looks fake as it doesn't blend within the environment. The team members behind the original MK movie were busting their balls to make Goro as practical as they could. Honestly, the CGI in the original is more dated compared to the rest of the movie but at least CGI reptile doesn't take much of the screen-time. And the cinematography in the original MK movie looks better because it feels like it has more grit to it.
@2 Crazy I have to agree. Although it wasn't perfect it somewhat captured what the games were about. Weird shit and psychologically messing with the viewers perception of what's real and what isn't.

I skipped through the movie. The only character I found somewhat likeable was Kano and he got treated with disdain. It's the movie making the point that it doesn't like charismatic characters. This movie pretends to be for grown-ups (too) when all it does is having characters trying too hard to act cool and bad-ass while the trying hard part shines through. The characters are just not charismatic. The original movie was cheesy as hell but the characters had charisma, they were fun to watch, the good and the bad guys.
I can best describe the new Mortal Kombat as Superficial over Substance, namely it includes stuff fans wanted...but only surface level crap just to please the average fan and even then it falls pretty hard. Easter Egg nods to characters and lore, violence, fatalities, some obscure characters from the games and Scorpion and Subzero beating each other up. The problem is that all of that stuff is primarily window dressing, things that while serving as extras enhance a movie, without a solid story, well developed characters, enjoyable dialogue and decent sets, all that extra crap means little to nothing.
Completely agree and i'm one of those fan boys. The bad attepts at references did not do it for me. Yes the first one is better and so is zilla vs kong.

Even the one thing they did ok in the previous movies - the choreography of the fights was now totally ruined. Lame plot, lame acting, really bad CGI (especially the flames and Goro), horrible cinematography and to top it all Cole and his whole character which was the final nail in the coffin. I seriously wonder when you have such a material how do you end up with something so bad.
Honestly the best scene of the entire movie was the beginning scene, which they showed in the trailer. I still enjoyed the movie because I was high but the movie was pretty bad. Kano was also probably the only thing that carried the movie, dude had me laughing. And subzero was dope.

@@GeneralAsda18 its a cool concept but poorly executed. The arcana felt real for the first part of the movie. The way the fighters needed to dig deep into what drives them to achieve their power was an awesome concept. The way Jax and Sonya recieved their powers just ruined it though.
@@GeneralAsda18 well i probably would've had Jax and Sonyas powers\equipment come from the special forces. Kanos cybernetic gear comes from his connections through the black dragon. It was so rushed that Milena didn't even get a proper fight with sonya which could've been epic. Instead it was all rushed because there was too much arcana and not enough banana.
Apparently people liked the blatant references, but when Kung Lao said “flawless victory” I audibly said fuck you. The movie reeks of being written by people who have only a vague familiarity to MK and couldn't be assed to read up on the lore, and studio executives decision making.
Goro from the '95 Mortal Kombat was anything BUT a "cut corner due to budget restraints". The puppetry and animatronics on display look incredible to me, but it was also a million dollar effect. They literally spent $1,000,000 on that puppet/animatronic. I know how it looks is subjective, but I prefer it over the fucking CG shit we got with MK '21
This movie was terrible. The pacing was slow, the characters weren't interesting, the story felt rushed, and it didn't feel at all like I was watching Mortal Kombat. Heck, the whole movie takes place before the actual tournament. The people working on this didn't know what they were doing. They just took the title of a very famous videogame franchise and slapped an entirely different project on it. The main characters were boring, and weren't anything like their videogame counterparts. While the original Mortal Kombat movies weren't anything groundbreaking, they at least had a much better story to follow. Something like Mortal Kombat shouldn't be turned into a movie, it should a series; that way there is much more time for character and story development, as well as better prologue. I will say that the choreography was pretty good, but that isn't enough! If there is a sequel, I'm not looking forward to it. Also, they ruined the theme song.
That would have been good. But not with these writers, I shit you not dude look up the writers and what they worked on before. All D list indie films, terrible action films, and like D list horror films. And one of the writers worked specifically on children’s movies
more complaints about the movie (spoiler alert) as a big MK fan. 1.Shang Tsung plays by rules, him setting out to go kill the champions destroys his character as being scheeming. He literally forced others to compete in the tournament originally so this makes no sense. 2.Bi Han and the Lin-Kuei don't actually kill Scorpion's family and clan.Quan chi does as payment to the LK for something Bi-Han stole, as the Shirai-Ryu is their rival clan. 3.I know many liked Kano.He had the most personality but he was still so annoying and just agressive. He's supposed to be an asshole, evil but still charming. Not straight up complaining 24/7 and he's not meant to be a Hero or trained by Liu Kang. 4.Johnny Cage is missing.Horrible move 5.Too many deaths and the deaths make no sense for their timeframe and who they were killed by is stupid except for Kano cuz Sonya does make sense but NOT YET. 6.Reiko and Nitara are older 3D era characters who have much potential to be more interesting than this. 7.Cole-Young wasn't interesting at all and a useless OC
I love the look of the og film even with the dated cgi the set design is amazing. Sonya should’ve just been the main protagonist at this point because her back story is much better then “orphan who went into boxing”
Sub Zero didnt know Cole was a descendant at first. He was there to kill Earthrealm's champions. Cole had the mark so he was a target. Sub Zero doesnt find out until the end who Cole actually is.
1. Goro should be made of animatronic, not CGI. 'Cause you know it makes him more realistic. 2. Cole Young's superpower is just plot armor? 3. The lack of martial arts choreography, Joe Taslim was the fastest there and no one can equal his movement, so studio decided to give Joe a heavy costume to reduce it. 4. Reptile, Nitara, Kabal, Goro, and Reiko are a total joke and some wasted character in this movie. 5. Liu Kang and Kung Lao lack of chemistry on screen, they supposed to be the dynamic duo just like in MK games considered they both trained also by Bo Rai Cho. 6. The arcana origin and the invitation dragon tattoo thing is so unnecessary and just stupid.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 This is exactly my thoughts!! Even though the movie had badass fight scenes, the storyline was just odd...Its just another alternative dimension...
Well, you'll have to admit that it's very difficult to try and write about 12 different fighters in a one short movie to make sense out of everything. If they do it Marvel-style (imagine Sub-Zero their own solo starring movie and expand the story bit wider to more fighters in the future films), then the story will probably make more sense. But you know how business works: budget.
The movie gets a C- we all thought we’d see more subzero and scorpion but all we got was 5-7 minutes of them, they replaced Johnny cage with that nobody who has black panther based armor, then they put A Spanish looking Chinese guy as Kung Lao, reptile didn’t even look like reptile, they put a unknown character with a hammer, characters were screwed with like how kano and jaxx cybernetics were actually there superpowers. Raiden and Shang Tsung SUCKED and the tournament was supposed to be on Shang tsungs island, not at raidens temple. In the movie scorpions fatality was supposed to show him peeling off his face to show his whole skull when he breathes fire but they screwed it up by just showing scorpion take off his mouth guard and you could only see the bottom half of his skull WTF
This review was on POINT. You said it perfectly. They spent too much time trying to pop the fanboys with references instead of making a good, coherent narrative. It was a mess.
Goro looked ALOT better than the bad 95 version however he’s killed way way too soon. He’s won 9 MK Tournaments and gets totally abused and killed by a washed up nobody. Total BS he should have gotten a much much bigger arc. I don’t care about the budget or whatever if you can’t have Goro in the film properly then I agree with you just cut him out of the film. It was a disgrace to someone who was won 9 tournaments
The original has a tournament, that is all, non of the characters even relate or fight like they do in the game. It's basically the Resident Evil movie version of the game. How the hell is that shit better?
@@Kickinthescience Of course the original Mortal Kombat game had fatalities. Each character had one unique fatality and then there was the pit fatality into the spikes. To the OP, the characters do use their moves from MK 1/2. Cage uses his shadow kick and friendship, Liu Kang uses his bicycle kick and his fireball, and Sonya uses her legs throw on Kano (sort of, lol). Also, Resident Evil is way worse because not only does it not follow the plot/setting of the game, but it has none of the characters from it (later ones do, but they're not important compared to Milla's character, Alice).
You're argument contradicts itself. If not being faithful to the game is a big factor of how you gauge your enjoyment of the movies then you should have this new movie rated much lower. If seeing the game move sets and fighting styles being played out faithfully by the actors in the movie is the only thing you care about, then you're right this new one is better, but it's also much more comparable to the RE movies as a video game adaption than the original, as it doesn't stay very faithful at all to the games plot.

I agree with everything accept Goro, the 1995 Goro was a practical effect that they dumped most of the budget into and they put alot of effort into to try and make it work. Are you serious
Always hated Johnny cage!! Not because of skin color, but the whole hollywood douchebag angle.
They pretty much ripped off the intro from that fan made series 'Mortal Kombat Legacy' which actually was pretty good for what little budget they had. All in all it was pretty bad Raiden was just horribly miscast and some of the 'fan service' just left me cringing.
Yeah, Raiden was terrible to me. I could NOT understand half the guy's lines.

Cole's super power is plot armor lmao

4. Reptile, Nitara, Kabal, Goro, and Reiko are a total joke and some wasted character in this movie.

Badass ? The first fight yes
Well, you'll have to admit that it's very difficult to try and write about 12 different fighters in a one short movie to make sense out of everything.
@@megavolt67 I’m talking about the original MK movie in 1995
You're argument contradicts itself.
Good I missed this movie. This sucks more than Annihilation. Why do they need to have Coleslaw Young character?
Well I liked it and I’m hopeful for a sequel.
