    The buzz when this was coming out monthly was amazing. I’ve never thought the murderer reveal worked, but the story is fun to read and the artwork is great.

      This sold incredibly well, too, to the point where DC had to keep reprinting until they decided on "Final Printing" editions.
      Even the subsequent printings had wonderful covers, and I was all in!

    DC needs to do a Justice league omnibus by Brad Meltzer and include this story in it.

    I'm currently reading back in the 1970s and it's wild to see how comics evolved.
    As a crime story, this book is a grim masterpiec;, raw, and real.

    This story REALLY Hit hard. Just Omar's initial overview made me have to make sure no one was cutting onions in the room. Have never understood the people that thought this was "edgy" This was an incredible moment in comics history as it was so, so moving.

    It’s kind of hard to remember but outside a little Batman and a little Spider-man this might have been the first comic event I read from start to finish. I loved it then, and love it now

    This event affected the dc universe for almost a decade. Villains would be talking about what happened in almost every book. People may not like this story but it’s very important to all the stories afterwards.

    One day I walked into a comic book shop and asked the guy what would he recommend. He showed me this book. It was in a hardcover. When I started to read it I couldn’t put it down. Great artwork and and an amazing story.

    Loved the story because I grew up with the satellite years JLA and seeing them again was really nostalgic. Really dark but cool and story and art were both amazing. Brad did borrow a lot from Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme story with the memory wipe stuff and other things.

    Still got the comics. Still read them now and again. Love the story. One of those ideas that was so obvious but no one ever did it before. I didn't like what happened with Ray Palmer's wife being a crazy killer but I don't think I was supposed to. It shook things up!

    Great book. This got me back into DC comics. Like reading Watchman or the boys. This book has a lot of emotion and great art. Set the stage for infinite crisis. A book that really moved dc comics focuses for the adult reader.

    I totally get the controversy here and I do think that almost definitely we don't need storylines revolving around superhero r*pe in main line DC comics.
    Basically it's just a massive can of worms. If you open it once, they're all going to come wriggling out. Why wouldn't this r*pe concern feature in nearly every comic book? Next thing you know DC Comics is going to read like The Boys. We can't have that.
    All that being said (besides the overall conception of this story being questionable, and the sexual politics being questionable) I think it was actually *written well* in terms of the fact that it's exciting, the dialogue is sharp, the action is good, and you want to know what's going to happen next. Most of the art is great.

    • @earlsmith7428
      @earlsmith7428 2 місяці тому +2

      You're not alone there. DC went too far. Ralph and Sue were a happily married couple in DC for at least 40 years. Why do so many modern writers think they have to "shake things up?" If you want edgy stories, go to read the modern comics.

    • @xposhboyx
      @xposhboyx 2 місяці тому +3

      @@earlsmith7428 🤝 I might disagree with you a bit there, with no disrespect intended to you...
      I don't have a problem with shaking things up, it's boring to have everything stay the same in comics all the time. You want to break up the Dibnys, go ahead. And overall I appreciated the modern tone of this book.
      I'm specifically questioning the use of r*pe as a plot device in superhero stories.
      It's too big a can of worms, I mean let's face it, If there were super villains in the real world, of course many would constantly be committing r*pe.
      But too much of that would just get absolutely horrific and disgusting to the audience very quickly. Once one supervillains start r*ping, why wouldn't every other story involve that? We don't want to read about Wonder Woman getting r*ped by Dr Psycho, and I don't need to get into the billion reasons why that's a bad road to start down.
      I give the editors at DC a lot of credit for refusing to allow this same plot element to be used again.

      @@xposhboyx I understand what you're saying. "Identity Crisis" started us further down a slippery slope that I really wish DC hadn't started. It may have been a success financially, but it continued a trend towards realism that bothers me. I understand what you're saying about "its' boring to have everything stay the same in comics all the time." But I . . . . . . I guess I don't like change. Didn't care for John Byrne's re-interpretation of Superman (though I read it), didn't care for Batman getting darker and darker over the years. I prefer the Adam West version. It seems to me that the easy thing for entertainment writers to do these days when it comes to couples (is to break em up). And it gets tiresome. Look what happened to Sue and Ralph, the seventies Katar Holl and Hawkgirl, Ray and Jean Loring Aquaman and Mera (for awhile). When I read Identity Crisis twenty years, I loved the art, and references to the satellite era, but I hated the tragedies which happened to Ralph and Ray. It was just too much. OK. those are my opinions.

    Thank you for the great overview, Omar, especially being fair about it although other videos gave me the distinct impression that this is one of your least favorite DC events. I haven't read the story yet, but from what I've heard from all kinds of sources, including you now, this is a really good preparation for Infinite Crisis, which I haven't read yet either, although the omnibus sits on my shelf ready to rumble.
    So yes, I've pre-ordered this Deluxe Edition, and I'm looking forward to receiving it this month.

    The first comic event I read and could not wait for each issue. Still my favorite and I think the best comics story I have read. For me, that is down to the emotion of the story. It seemed so sophisticated compared to other comics. Brad Meltzer is always who I have credited for that, him being a novelist. I wished he would have done more comics work, esp for DC.

    If I could wipe any comic from existence it would be Identity Crisis. Arguably I've read worse but none of those are as cancerous to an entire publishing line as this book. DC has never really recovered from it's bad influence. It's just a deeply vile book with no actual substance. It's emotional manipulations are cheap and clumsy. The big mystery is stupid. It's attempt at shock are adolescent and eye rolling. It's drenched in crass misogyny. It's insistence that actually the silly/funny old dc comics were actually grim serious business is cringe. And that deathstroke fight is embarrassing fanboy nonsense. Everyone involved or talking about how great it is should be embarrassed.

      It’s edge lord fan fiction trash. The book absolutely hates women and the ending even doubles down on that. They removed the intro by Joss Whedon which is a shame since he was the perfect guy to write the intro for a book that hates women as much as Identity Crisis does. It’s like they took women in refrigerators and doubled down.
