That ending segment reminded me of when Electronics Boutique started selling Japanese Saturn imports at the end of the American Saturn's life. They didn't seem to sell all that well at the one I used to go to (City Center Mall in Downtown Columbus OH, which was torn down back in 2009), but I did get a goodly number of them at the time. Titles like the Japanese Dead or Alive 1, Saturn Symphony of the Night, a couple of Capcom Generations discs, Konami MSX Antiques, pretty sure there were others. Good times.

Great video! I've noticed that a lot of people who had the Sega Master System in the eighties prefer to play Phantasy Star with the original PSG music. To those who don't have that nostalgia for the original music, I recommend the FM music that the Japanese release of the game got, as it's the same music but played through Genesis-level technology, and it sounds absolutely fantastic. I played the game for the first time on emulation years ago, and so I had the possibility of choosing which music I wanted. The PSG music was like listening to someone scratching a chalkboard, so I chose the FM sound and I suppose I now feel a sort of nostalgia for that.

I mean, I agree with you, but I also think they should wait until they have a full cartridge's worth of games, and truly take advantage of however much storage space would be worth it for a Switch cartridge. Yeah, they'd have to have a *LOT* of games to make it worth it, since they wouldn't need to pack in the full emulator for every game, since they could use a core one, and then include plugins for stuff like Phantasy Star's extra UI (which if wouldn't surprise me if that's how it works, just being a plug-in on top of the same emulator they used for other Master System games), but even then, I feel like to make it worth it, they'd have to do some special collector's edition of the release. Like, we get special editions of the Switch every so often for specific games, and maybe they could do that, but like, get Nintendo's approval to have a dock that looks like a Master System, a Genesis/Mega Drive or Saturn. (I'd say one of the arcade machines, but then having a mode for the dock where you can then treat your switch like a micro arcade would be mandatory, so...yeah. that one would probably be too expensive.)
@@no1special999 yeah, but that isn't quite as special as a cool collector's edition release by the company that originally made the games. I know Dave is doing what is best for his family at the moment, but I wish he could make an appearance more often; even if it was only for a skit. For example this episode it would have been awesome if he broke into your house to steal your Switch. Something to the effect that he watched this episode when it came out and just knew he had to save a Nintendo console from such misuse. Maybe he has found comfort in the belief of "equal exchange." "I must save the Nintendo Switch but also I must leave something that is of equal in value for Joe." The obvious choice is Green Dog. "Joe does not need Snatcher, so I will leave another Green dog in its place. Oh, apparently Green dog is worth multiple Sega CD games as the space the Green Dog case takes up on the shelf is equal to ""x:"" amount of Sega SC games." Maybe he was coming back from an event with his family when he saw this episode; but luckily he had a survival bag full of Green Dogs for just such an emergency. It could be when you wake up in the morning you really have to be somewhere just to find a copy of Green Dog where your car had been. So on and so forth.... I know you could make a much funny skit out of it than me. Again, I am only saying this because I miss Dave! With that said, Joe you are very much appreciated and I am always grateful to see your Sack.
One of the best channels on UA-cam! The ending is most of us! Scott the Woz had a video game collecting episode. Collecting video games is my favorite thing to do, playing them is a close 13th.
I hope you someday make a video on the 3DS's Sega 3D Classics line, it's basically a SEGA AGES line in all but name and it's extensive as heck. Each game features some sorts of additions or enhancements, and there's a stupidly huge number of them released.
I am now at episode 304 and only 2 years behind on Game Sack episodes. The Nintendo Switch is what has gotten me back into gaming with how easy it is to pick up and play whenever. I do wish you would say in the episodes that the title is a Digital Download or Digital Only game as I have found myself looking for the games you are talking about and unable to find them after spending days looking for them...okay maybe minutes looking for them. I know you and Dave have both reiterated what I feel as well about physical copies of games. I kind of hate digital games. The only advantage I've found is that I don't have to swap the cartridge out, but I feel that is a lame reason to go digital...but I digress....great episode, I still believe Outrun on the Japanese Saturn is difinitive version of that game, but would love to see Outrun Coast to Coast (2006) be released.
We were given a sega master system for Christmas when I was 11. Endless memories of shinobi 🥷 on that and the arcade. That game showed me how rewarding hard games could be.
Finally bought myself a switch. ( Got 2 14+ hour flight days ahead of me ) and just in time for a sale on all the Sega AGES games - many under $5. Pretty much just bought the switch lite for these, as I play everything else on my Xbox. I hate that these have always been locked to one console each gen. Looking forward to finally giving phantasy star 1 an honest try.
Regarding Thunder Force IV's music slowdown - if you overclock your real Mega Drive/Genesis you wil probably noticed the music slow down on the Stage 1 boss too (that's the only boss i've noticed it on).
@25:13 I also co-sign ..: Sincerely hope Sega and M2 can port to Switch … …. the system 16 (with double memory) remake of Fantasy Zone 2 they did for PS2 Sega Ages Vol. 33, “Fantasy Zone 2DX”, that also eventually became the Nintendo 3DS’s “3d Fantasy Zone 2W / Link Loop Land”
Still holding out for my favorite Model 1 arcade release, Wing War. Also Sega Rally Championship, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter (any), Revenge of Death Adder.. Happy with Virtua Racing. Great job on that release.
Yeah I got the Sega Ages Phantasy Star on Switch. I really like it, the FM music is pretty good as well as the display filters. I never had it originally, I just like the scrolling walking animation of when you where in a dungeon; Nintendo didn't have that! And it should be noted that I've still not beaten the game..
Growing up with Master System and Megadrive, it still mess with my mind seeing SEGA games on a Nintendo system. It's just something I can never get used to, no matter how long it's been happening
I wonder why Super Hang On is not on Switch and nobody asks about it! It was on the 3DS 3D Versions, and it was on Wii VC as well with motion controls! (but with no difficulty and time settings, so I couldn't finish it there!)
The 3D Classics range on 3DS--now that was something special. Somehow, they should put that in VR, since that's kinda the only other way to view the games in amazing stereoscopic 3D. It really would be pretty awesome if done right--M2. This range, however, is just more stuff I've seen a million times before for the most part.
Japanese version of Thunder Force IV is a little harder than the western versions. Some enemies have less HP, others don't have like an armor and some boss attacks aren't as fast (Stage 1 boss orb attack for example). Also, yes, the music slows down on real hardware in some specific places, most notable with the first boss fight, the rest of the game isn't perceptible tho. This happens in some games too, MUSHA for example the whole music slows down a bit when there's a ton of stuff on screen, like all the time lol. Not a game breaker but it's there.
I’m also bummed about Super Hang On. That is literally the only reason I keep my DS around. I wish they would make a Sega ages and be done with it so I don’t have to pull out that thing anymore
They also didn't do Turbo OutRun, Power Drift, Galaxy Force, Afterburner, Thunderblade, etc.... So my 2ds remains relevant, I guess. But I'm just depressed that they never even tried to do Virtua Fighter. Or any polygon games after Virtua Racing.
Shame Sega doesn't appear to be doing any more of these anytime soon. Like mentioned in this episode, imagine Virtua Fighter getting the Virtua Racing treatment!
@@QF_Dan72 Yeah I'm still not sure why they made the decision to pull out of these ports. It's possible they just weren't bringing in enough money to make the effort worth it. Which is a major shame if that's actually the case. I've bought nearly all of them. Probably wouldn't hurt to make them multi-platform though (at least PlayStation alongside Switch).
You can unlock Arcade Mode in Outrun if you get all five endings. Then you can run the game at 30 fps. I'm not sure why they felt the need to lock that option away. The wolf from Altered Beast with a mole would have been hilarious.
The reason why there's an HD Rumble Mode is b/c the games are rumored to be coming to PlayStation & Xbox later on - consoles w/proper rumble. I guess it's easier to add the feature now than add it as a feature later on?
LightEning Force has my heart and that soundtrack just kicked some serious a%^. As of 6/6/21, the cartridge alone is alomst $70, but the lowest ebay had it for was $90. Just putting that out there. I payed $25 four years ago for it.

When is Sack Ages coming out?
Aged Sacks and it's out currently.
One of the best channels on UA-cam! The ending is most of us! Scott the Woz had a video game collecting episode. Collecting video games is my favorite thing to do, playing them is a close 13th.
I was really hope they'd bring Power Drift to Switch, too. It played well on the 3DS AGES collection!
I hope you someday make a video on the 3DS's Sega 3D Classics line, it's basically a SEGA AGES line in all but name and it's extensive as heck. Each game features some sorts of additions or enhancements, and there's a stupidly huge number of them released.
"...that's been a part of this game since Sonic 2's day"
Me: "Sonic Tuesday? Was that like Mortal Monday?"
“Best 8 bits RPG ever made”. Tiiiiight , I thought only I thought that
Best graphics, maybe.
All I ever wanted was a SuperScaler collection!
And maybe a Castlevania GBA+DS collection
Your GBA advanced prayers were answered. Did you have something to do with it? :D
I don't think Sega is gonna put out a Castlevania collection.
Thanks for doing this Sack.
Thanks for this review. I do have the thuder force 4 music slowdown In my megadrive.
5:01 Huh the Thunder Force IV logo font really looks like it says Thunder Farce.
There's a joke there but I'm late and it's tired
Yea thats how they pronounce it...
"Thuuuunndaaaa faaarrrce"
Man I would love a Sega Ages Super Hang-On! I always think about that game and how beautiful those colors would look in HD
The line at 16:20 is now one of my favorite lines ever in any UA-cam video
Regarding Thunder Force IV's music slowdown - if you overclock your real Mega Drive/Genesis you wil probably noticed the music slow down on the Stage 1 boss too (that's the only boss i've noticed it on).
@25:13 I also co-sign ..: Sincerely hope Sega and M2 can port to Switch …
…. the system 16 (with double memory) remake of Fantasy Zone 2 they did for PS2 Sega Ages Vol.
Wish they’d do this for panzer dragon 2. Never got to really play that one.
It's just something I can never get used to, no matter how long it's been happening
i feel the same bro i feel the same -_-
Remember when Jet Set Radio won the fan vote for what Sega Ages game should be next and then Sega just stopped the project completely?
I wonder why Super Hang On is not on Switch and nobody asks about it! It was on the 3DS 3D Versions, and it was on Wii VC as well with motion controls! (but with no difficulty and time settings, so I couldn't finish it there!)
The 3D Classics range on 3DS--now that was something special.
Somehow, they should put that in VR, since that's kinda the only other way to view the games in amazing stereoscopic 3D. It really would be pretty awesome if done right--M2.
This range, however, is just more stuff I've seen a million times before for the most part.
Was just playing Elevator Action Returns. Great game!
It lags on the first boss if you go in fully powered up with the lazer.
To experience the hd rumble feature you have to play with a joycon, the pro controller does not have hd rumble, only the joycon does
best ending to a retro video game video , picking up elevator action returns on saturn
Better yet, give us a version of Hang On GP '95 with the love that Virtua Racing got, including digital controls that aren't super twitchy.
Shame Sega doesn't appear to be doing any more of these anytime soon. Like mentioned in this episode, imagine Virtua Fighter getting the Virtua Racing treatment!
they're sitting on a goldmine, i really want to play some of the Model 3 arcade titles on the Switch but somehow Sega doesn't want to do it
@@QF_Dan72 Yeah I'm still not sure why they made the decision to pull out of these ports. It's possible they just weren't bringing in enough money to make the effort worth it. Which is a major shame if that's actually the case. I've bought nearly all of them. Probably wouldn't hurt to make them multi-platform though (at least PlayStation alongside Switch).
I'm glad that M2 kept the Time Boners intact in Virtua Racing.
You can unlock Arcade Mode in Outrun if you get all five endings. Then you can run the game at 30 fps. I'm not sure why they felt the need to lock that option away. The wolf from Altered Beast with a mole would have been hilarious.
i'd be into an episode on Neo Geo ports on the Switch... might need more than one episode
Gain Ground's resolution is pretty freaking sweet. So much detail.
I LOVE this series of games!!!
It's impossible not to get excited when I hear that intro music.
I fast forward through it. Annoying, it is.
Milk is.
They managed to keep the low end FM synth quality sound. Really nice!
The option to play Outrun at the original 30 FPS (y doe) becomes available to you after getting to one of the endings.
The reason why there's an HD Rumble Mode is b/c the games are rumored to be coming to PlayStation & Xbox later on - consoles w/proper rumble.
I guess it's easier to add the feature now than add it as a feature later on?
your voice when reviewing columns ii... :D
LightEning Force has my heart and that soundtrack just kicked some serious a%^. As of 6/6/21, the cartridge alone is alomst $70, but the lowest ebay had it for was $90. Just putting that out there. I payed $25 four years ago for it.
