    Congrats on an all Red Mage playthrough! I got a taste of the int stat actually working back in Dawn of Souls, Red Mages have it rough.
    Don't know if this is relevant to you specifically, but here's some crunch for those who enjoy it.
    I haven't played the PR yet, but NES FF1 doesn't have a protect spell.* It has a spell that raises your absorb by 8, about twice what you get from wooden armour. The full-party version increases absorb by 12. So yeah, "Protect" is definitely not reducing physical damage taken by 50% like in later games.
    Wizards deal 1-2 hits for 30-60 damage each so subtracting 8 per hit isn't a lot. Pirates deal 8-16 damage once per turn which becomes 1-8 with "Protect." (Or just 1 if you're wearing Chain Armour with 15 absorb all by itself, no "Protect" needed)
    Again, that's all NES numbers, just for comparison purposes.
    *It _might_ be protect in Japanese, but it was FOG and FOG2 in English.

      I dunno about the worst.... I'd give that title to thief, even when it isn't bugged.
      I like using red mage as a buff/debuff character, it has access to all the good buffs and debuffs and like. It's not like those spells have damage for your stats to affect, AND it frees up spells for another mage. Red mages rock, don't put your favorite down :)

      Thief is so bad you would have a hard time convincing me a class was worse.
      I've seen it be buffed in other releases (my favorite buffs coming from the FF1 randomizer, which includes the ability to pick locks at level 20), in which case red mage may be worse.

    • @Xephrost_Gaming
      @Xephrost_Gaming  5 місяців тому

      I guess that is true. You don't get 5th level spells for a bit after that. I would still have preferred they be more spaced out with dungeons, but that may not have been feasible on the NES.

      @@Xephrost_Gaming It was more that there were developmental problems. Final Fantasy shipped in a buggy and semi-unfinished state without getting the polish and finishing touches it needed. It was certainly technically feasible to do more on the NES, but it would've required time and money that Square didn't have.

  • @DrewDragoon

    I get the impression that the developers expected the player to roam around the world exploring with the ship, which is why there are so many things to buy during that section of the game with the level two, three and four magic all at once as well as lots of equipment. Presumably the player wouldn't know where to go and so would do a lot of wondering around and a lot of fighting as a result. Because we now know exactly where to go, it feels like poor pacing.

    I remember it was possible to get the class change before entering the volcano. You can enter the citadel oftrials once you have the canoe. The river north of the castle functions as a harbor IF you have the canoe and you can get the rat's tail early. I don't remember if you still needed the airship to get the class change from Bahamut or if there was a harbour to enter his lair for an early class change. But I remember I usually went against Marilith with my party already affected by class changes. But it's possible to do that out of order.

    • @Xephrost_Gaming
      @Xephrost_Gaming  4 місяці тому +1

      If I recall, as soon as you get the canoe, you can go to Gulg Volcano to fight Marilith OR go to the ice cavern to get the levistone. Then get airship and do trials and class upgrade.

    Ah yes, the FF1 Red Mage. This game was where they were in their prime. It's funny that i'm just now seeing these FF1 PR videos, considering i just beat a challenge run of this game myself. Since you can turn random encounters off and on at your leisure, i thought to myself: "What would the run be like if i just never got a random encounter...like...ever?" So i did that run and ended up beating Chaos at lvl 23. Now I'm trying that same run again, but with the 0.5 EXP modifier on the entire time.(I love the fact that there is an option to make the game as hard or as easy as you want it to be)

      Specifically, it's the NES FF1 where Red Mages were peak, basically just universally better than Black Mages (aside from aesthetic) and ninjas (no contest, really) and better than White Mages in most situations.
      FF1 only really cares about Fighters/Knights and being subject to Haste and Temper, though, at the end of the day.

    Red mage has always been my favorite class. FFV is REALLY good early on, but unfortunately it doesn't scale to high levels and falls off. FF11 gave Red Mage a niche use as a buffer/debuffer and they did it well at all levels.

    "I wish Red Mages could equip better shields"
    The ProCape isn't as good as the knightly shields, but does equip to the shield slot and is better than the buckler. It's unintuitive, just like bracelets being a body armor instead of a shield.

    • @matthewbarabas3052
      @matthewbarabas3052 5 місяців тому +1

      it does. the red wizard can cast protera. which raises defense. by 12. so if all your red wizards have that spell, your defense just got increased by 48. oh, and you can also cast invisira four times as well. now you basically cant die to a physical attack. ever.
      then four casts of haste, and four to twelve casts of temper. (1 to 3 each)
      then, nothing stands a chance.

    • @Xephrost_Gaming
      @Xephrost_Gaming  5 місяців тому +2

      Yup, most of the buffs stack. This is the best way to beat a lot of bosses by stacking Temper on 1 attacker. The issue with the defensive buffs is they didn't tend to be useful enough to justify casting them multiple times (particularly considering most bosses have strong elemental magic whose damage can't be significantly reduced. Other than by nul spells, which do not stack).

    you don't really need those fancy high offensive magic, all you need are haste and temper, and you're ready to face any boss, which makes me think mages in this game are somewhat useless, since you can cast those spells using item with any job
