    Love the collaboration with Alex, who is generally my favorite reviewer because of the amount of technical data he provides in a condensed format along with reviews that closely match my observations. Also enjoy his restrained humor (“frunkless” and “frunk ambivalent” being good examples) while some of the TFL reviews are a bit more subjective. Absolutely love TFL’s entire family of channels, especially the truck focus (never buy a tow vehicle without watching the pertinent Ike Gauntlet). All that being said I bought the AWD Pro S simply because we’ve had great success with VW and it’s an easy transition from an ICE vehicle. Three years of unlimited fast charging is also a big plus, along with hitch for bike rack and/or light motorcycle or utility trailer. Great presentation guys!

    I always enjoy TFL when it collaborates with other folks "in the industry." By all means, give us more, more, more. I would especially like to see your new TFLEV channel get together with Bjørn Nyland from Norway. They are so far ahead of the US in the EV world, it's virtually "a look into our future" to see what's going on in Norway right now.

    As an ID.4 owner, here's my take on the controls:
    * The sliders actually work really well, and after a few days of use I could find them at night too, even though they don't light up. It would have been nice if they had lit up, but it isn't a show stopper.
    * The touch buttons, on the other-hand, have more problems. The biggest is the response lag (a software issue, clearly). Secondarily, certain touch buttons are just too easy to hit accidentally when I am trying to do other things. For example, when I am adjusting the mirrors I often randomly hit the child lock and/or door master lock.
    * The in-car navigation is pretty horrible, but I just use wireless apple car play for everything anyway so... I don't really care. The in-vehicle map directions are more useful because it also pops on your central display (whereas Apple car-play directions are only on the main screen). Finding charging stops... not so useful. So, best to use an app for that. The in-car map mode also has a nice range circle on it, which can be useful.
    Of course, I have a whole laundry list of things I like and dislike, but the main take-away is that none of the issues are really show-stoppers... they don't cause me to not enjoy the vehicle :-). For example, even though the infotainment startup when you first get into the car takes a while, the car is actually drivable within 3 seconds of getting into it. Apple car-play connects automatically... so literally with the VW I just get in the car and go. I don't have to remove my phone or keys from my pockets or touch anything. I don't even have to touch the key fob to enter the car. As an owner, there are several tricks we can use to speed up the infotainment system too, such as removing the in-vehicle map from the swipe-left screen (it is still accessible via an icon). All of us ID.4 owners expect VW to give us an OTA update this summer (in the U.S.) that will fix a large chunk of the software issues.
    The mach-e is a great vehicle too, though I think everyone is aware of the fast DC charging issues it has had in its first year. Both Ford and VW have to get on the ball when it comes to car firmware if they want to compete against Tesla.
    -Matt

    I like the mach e but not the mustang name plate. I like that manufacturers are looking at EV'S as a way to maybe re-imagine vehicles. But some features are there for a reason. I worry that when a car gets covered in freezing rain those nifty handles may not work or you may not be able to get at them. Sometimes mechanical might be more reliable.

      The whole "Mustang Mach E" name is a marketing strategy by Ford. They wanted the public to focus on the name and not the flaws of the car, and it worked. The name is so polarizing that people don't even mention the flaws as much.

    I test drove both and I ended up ordering the ID.4 pro S which will be a 2023. It felt like a more convenient choice, altho a Frunk would of been a nice addition. I just didn't like the Mach E interior, including the infotainement setup but that came down to my own personal choice really. I think both are great options but for the price value... The VW made more sense, especially considering the 3 years of free charging via electrify.

  • @NIKEB0ARD

    We test drove both (Mach E & ID4 AWD) and ordered an ID4 pro s in gradient. It was quick enough in AWD, I felt the interior was higher quality and fit our style better, and liked that it had a factory hitch and heated windshield for living in the north. The price difference was really the differentiating factor, including the 3 free years of charging. The 3.0 update for the ID4 is increasing max charge speed, and the duration of that speed, which will make the charging time much more competitive (10-80 in 28 minutes). Overall I'm happy with our decision, just waiting for it to arrive from Germany.

      You rarely see anyone mention the charging curve - or duration as you say. The ID4 doesn’t hit a high max rate but it holds that rate for a long time. In the real world, I park and hook it up, go use the can, buy some chips, and the car has gotten well over a 150 miles back. That’s enough to get to the next charger. It’s actually a relaxing way to road-trip imo.

      @@AndrewPL5 he wasn't referring to it breaking. With heat pump, it uses the air conditioner in a reverse cycle to pull heat into the vehicle from the process. The only problem with that is you start getting into the lower temperatures around 14° it no longer produces heat until you get above that temperature. Some of the newer EVS have a heat pump and resistive coil heat. Heat pumps are way more efficient at producing heat, but resistive heat works no matter the temperature but it's a huge draw on your battery

    • @AndrewPL5
      @AndrewPL5 2 роки тому

      @@stevebalun9554 you really don't understand then how that system works on an EV. These EVs are tested in the coldest temps for this reason, to make sure the vehicles preform and work in the super cold. • @stevebalun9554
      @stevebalun9554 2 роки тому

      @@AndrewPL5 I do know how that system works on an EV considering I own an EV in a very cold climate. Heat pump stopped working around 25°. Some EVS have dual heat sources. A heat pump which is more efficient but uses an air conditioning compressor to produce heat in a reverse cycle. When temperatures dip below 25°, it can't create enough heat, and it uses its resistive heating coils which is a lot more demanding of energy but the only way you'll get heat at those temperatures. A large majority of EVS out there still only have resistive coil heating. Ev's take a huge hit on range in the cold

    I quite like the ID4 but I wasn’t a fan of the infotainment and HVAC setup. Luckily in Scotland we have 2 other similar options based on the same MEB platform- the Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 E-Tron. The Enyaq is slightly more practical and slightly cheaper, the Q4 is more “premium” and slightly more expensive. The Enyaq uses a similar infotainment system to the ID4 and has HVAC on the screen, the Audi uses the familiar MMI infotainment and has physical buttons for the HVAC controls. I went for the Q4 as I preferred the styling and interior, plus Enyaq had a longer wait. Three months in and I’m loving it. I’ve put some videos on my channel for anyone interested- not sure when it will be available in the USA?!? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    You should also discuss about the warranties on your review. I don't like cars if they are afraid to give their customers a long warranty like Hyundai. Shorter warranty for me means they don't believe that their products would last. Longer warranty means that they are confident and guarantee that their products would be going to last for a long time. Most of the car manufacturers knows that their products would break after 3-4 years that is why they have a shorter warranty. I like the Mach-E, however, I would have a better peace of mind with ID-4. I don't really like the style of IONIQ 5, but for the features and warranty, I would go for it. I can't wait to see the future line up of IONIQ.

    Alex keeps saying it's the length of the vehicle for the lack of a frunk (ID.4 and EV6), but if you watch Sandy Munro's breakdown of the ID.4, there's a lot of wasted space behind the dash that could have been used, which would give VW space for a frunk.

    I own the twin to Alex’s Mustang. We purchased super early and received an early build. Ford really screwed those up. OTAs don’t work and dealers can’t update them either. We can’t get bluecruise or any other new features because we can’t update the cars. Newer 21’s have more features then we early buyers have. Ford knows what is wrong with them and what hardware would need replaced. They refuse to fix them and they’ve been making us wait while they used the early buyers as Guinea pigs to figure out the software and firmware issues.

    I just think the VW looks sharper. Cleaner. But obviously they need to clean up their software and add a bunch of features. eg, fix the navi/find charging station issues, sharpen up the power output profile, plug n charge, increased charging kW, increased efficiency, reorganize the apps, range remaining should be in front of the driver and information on screen that should always be on the first page. Why are heated seats symbol the button for climate? Odd. No need for a home button. The apps don't need to be dumbo size...
    Those slider controls need to be light up. That's an easy fix. Get rid of the 2 arm rests too.
    Anyways, Ford Canada priced the base model under the gov't rebate level so they really blew it to make it more competitive.

    Most batteries in the electronics world have already configured their battery so they have a battery preserve builtin. That mean 100% from the user perspective is still below the true 100% of what the actual battery can take. That's a good thing and the way it should be. The user shouldn't have to worry about making manual charging adjustments. Just plug the car in and let it do its thing automatically.

    It's now two months since the video posted, I've been looking at trying to buy an EV, and you can't buy either one of these new without a 3-6 month lead time. If you want to buy a used Mach-E, you'll need to pay several thousand above MSRP.
    Which is what I did: $53k+fees+delivery for a used 2021 Mach-E Select with 9000 miles already on the ticker. Crazy time to be shopping for an EV.
