    Song definition:
    1. a short metrical composition intended or adapted for singing, esp. one in rhymed stanzas; a lyric; a ballad.
    2. a musical piece adapted for singing or simulating a piece to be sung: Mendelssohn's Songs without Words.
    4. the art or act of singing; vocal music.
    5. something that is sung.
    If you sing it, it is a song or a piece. If you play it, it, by definition, cannot be called a song.
    I don't care what you want to call it, but that is the correct terminology.

    • @timf5963
      @timf5963 9 років тому +25

      Murray Gusseck (tenors '88-'92), wrote it for the '90 season. It went through many changes; the sheet music I have and the videos on UA-cam have a 12/8 intro. This '02 version is similar to the '91 and '92 editions. They didn't play it the rest of the 90s, not until 2002, then again the next year. Not sure where the name came from, or why they don't play it anymore.
      I have an audio-only recording of them playing everybody on at Preview of Champions in '92. They repped it about 4-5 times and got the crowd pretty wild.

  • @Boggler0
    @Boggler0 12 років тому +6

    It's a typical marching snare tuning. Cranked way the hell up. The drums are designed for extreme tension, and if you check out the black max heads [what I think they are using] or any other marching snare head, you'll see it resembles the texture of a seatbelt. That is kevlar, my friend. And then the snares aren't metal either. Nylon. Totally unique sound that's meant to carry across a football field with the utmost clarity.

    • @milojohnson3057
      @milojohnson3057 6 років тому +1

      this is me being pedantic as kevlar and the black max material is literally almost exactly the same just with minor chemical differences, but remo Black Max heads are Technora aramid fiber. they actually dye the fiber black because technora is normally a gold color. i wish remo sold them like that

    DCI is about the music, not the fans. Football games and showstyle competitions are to pump up the fans and have fun. DCI is for musicians by musicians and rythms that make a fellow drummer get pumped may have no affect on the average fan. Thats the difference between corps and showstye, corps fans ARE pumped up by the complex and impressive music whereas normal fans are pumped up by the funky rythms and excited showmanship of showstyle

It's better to be able to play complicated music and be able to cut down your playing to entertain a crowd than play music to entertain a crowd...and that's it. More possibilities in your future and besides after you graduate no one will care that they were entertained that one time at a football game.

    Everything you just said is completely wrong, mintkendishin. Google defines music as "an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner." If you want to argue that you need melody to make music, just listen to the tenors. So calling drumming music is not an opinion. It's a fact. So go listen to more batterie percussion music and enjoy yourself. :)

  • @Drumkid69
    @Drumkid69 15 років тому

    Actually both of you are wrong. Chuck Mangione actually wrote and composed this piece ( Legend of the One Eyed Sailor) for a orchestra. Yes he did compose the drum part. Steve Gadd played with Chuck on certain gigs and ripped this part of Legend and used it for some of his solos. Check out the live version at the Hollywood Bowl of this song. It's amazing. Chuck made an album out of this recording.

    @TheMightyZooblin Many people do. To me it doesn't sound like they are breathing or resonating, and thats what drums are ment for (soundwise) to breate and be alive, not choked up. I love scv , and i tune my tenors to the 08 pitches since 08. cause they tune their tenors awesomely. Im not a fan of them choking the basses either. But thats drumming, its all personal taste :)

  • @woolters
    @woolters  15 років тому

    not entirely correct, as you can sing a piece thats normally played as well. Or play a piece that is normally sung. It's the music that matters, not the tags you put onto it.
    What matters is: is it appealing to the ear? If it is, let one call it a song, another a piece, and a third a composition. Who cares? Please, just take it as it is for once.
    Do you really think the people who started making music got worked up over how to call it? Please, you're overdoing it.

  • @RemiX_O

    If you Google "tapspace electric wheelchair" the first link should take you to a site where the music is $6 for the snare, tenors, and bass or $18 for the whole line. They have a lot of SVC's stuff there. It's a download so make sure to save it to your hard drive if you do purchase it.

  • @mintkendishin
    @mintkendishin 15 років тому

    is this even music? not that im tryin to can you even make music with the drums? because its not like you can play any notes with drums. Its not like you can play a song with the drums because you cant play any notes so tell me is it really music? or is it just sounds?

  • @reefedbeats

    clarification
    a cadence is a piece that lasts anywhere from 30-90sec that groups march out on the field to
    a warmup piece is a 30-90 sec piece that people warm up their hands with.
    so techincally, they can both be the same thing. if SCV was marching to this, it could be a warmup and a cadence

  • @SomeGuyDrumming

    It's more often used in the guitar world. For example, a guitar magazine might publish "20 Essential Hendrix Licks" or a hip guitarist might ask you to show off some licks. Sort of the same thing as riff or phrase, but definitely a swankier term.

    @drumpredator1 its how the heads get put on. The rim will be low if they put on and cranked tight the top head before the bottom head was put on and tightened. to get a good balance of rim on both sides of the drum (what i do) you put both heads on lose then tighten back and fourth untill desired level

    Okay forgive my ignorance as I haven't watch much of DCI for a decade, but when did they start angling the snare drums? Good idea since it's better for posture, etc. Are other lines doing this, or was this a one time thing?

    chill chill... for high school kids out there, they play watered down versions of these things as cadences. it's not like corps have cadences, for the most part, these days; corps play warm ups or show music...

    It's not about having funky cadences. It's about being the best.

    Why does davew0927 have -10 thumbs on his comment? While most everyone refers to a piece as a song, the word "song" implies that it must be sung. Therefore all music that does not involve singing is referred to as a "piece."

    @woolters you cant compare these snares with scottish pipe band snares. the scottish pipe band snares have snares on the top and bottom heads. so it has "double" the snare so it sounds tighter and higher.

    scv marches pearl and the heads are remo, i think remo ambassadors black... the head instructor, Ben Prima used to instruct my old high school and he bought us the same heads as the ones they're using

    This is PERFECT. Makes me want to drive back to my hometown and lay down a beating on the guy on the end of my high school snareline who always dirtied this up when we played it.

    FAMU is good but they use too much arm and the only cadence their know for is Duckmouth which is so easy I was able to teach a sixth grade drumline how to play it......clean I might add

    some also use them if the sleeves of the uniform are really long and baggy, so the sticks don't get caught and dropped. thats the main reason the high school i march for uses them.

    For anyone who wants the sheet music, buy Murray Gussek's parking Lot Etudes. It has this, It's in 4, Martian Mambo, Fat Mama Dancin, etc. It is a great buy and totally worth it.

    i really think its the raph henderson sticks they use... they make a huge difference when you compare it to other sticks (like the scott johnsons) when its played on a loose head.

    everyone and their mother has sampled that opening. i do believe it came from "Legend of the One Eyed Sailor", an old jazz tune and i think another one of Steve Gadd's signatures

    Oops. I screwed up. My drum instructor Tony Nunez is the tenor tech there. One of my friends got the sheet music for it and I remember hearing "Tony". Wonder how that got mixed up.

    You do realize they march too, right? They "Dont jus stand there." It's just a cadence. And most "black schools" have a different approach to drumming than DCI lines.
