  • ⌨️ We're back in keyboard territory this week, looking at Keychron's latest 75%-size budget mechanical boards. One is slim, one is... thicc, and there are a few more differences that you need to know about too.
I'll show you which of these I'd recommend buying, why they're a bit like Pokemon, and of course, you can hear what they sound/feel like to type on.

Which one of these would you be getting? Let me know (or if you have any questions) below!

I am still on my K2 v2 modded and looking towards V1 Max as an upgrade in months to come - programmable, 2.4Ghz and better build are just about good reasons for USD100, unless I find an alternative maker at the same price with better build/features/acoustics. Budget would be around USD100-150, but that needs to include my preferred XDA key-caps with cyrillic, and some modding stuff.
My current K2 v2 mod is:
    - Gateron G Pro 3 Yellow switches
    - Tape mode (2 layers)
    - Durock stabilisers with popular mods
    - 4mm Practik Base for vibration/sound dampening (orange)
    - 5mm STP Biplast sound insulator (black)
    - Poron foam between plate and PCB
    - 0.5mm switch pads
    - PBT XDA keycaps 1.5-1.6mm (cheap but good ones, not doubleshot)
    - 1.5mm O-rings on XDA key-caps
Quiet sure this beets even the current stock V1 Max and NyPhy Halo75 v2, when it comes to thockiness and silence, but want a new one.
BTW, I noticed that not many, or close to none, options when it comes to cases w/o top cover, like the K2 (not considering the low profile ones)! More plastic/steel/aluminum = more ways to resonate.

@@ThatMarkGilroy BTW, I didn't like the tactile Gateron Jupiter Banana switches that came with V1 Max and switched them to my currently preferred Gateron G Pro 3.0 Yellow linear switches, which I was also using on my K2 v2. Can you recommend me not costly linear silent switches that are more "creamier and silent" compared to G Pro 3.0 yellow?

Hi mate, glad it was helpful. K3 max is definitely more portable but you should be fine getting the V1 in a bag. Specs are:
      V1 Max:
      Width 148.7 mm
      Length 328.5 mm
      Weight 770g
      K3 Max
      Dimension: 306 x 116 mm
      Weight 525g

    • @ThatMarkGilroy
      @ThatMarkGilroy  Місяць тому

Hey there- welcome! You could technically add low profile keycaps to the V1 Max but some of the switches (those with the stabilisers on) wouldn’t support them, so you’d have to find a workaround there- maybe swap out the switch for a different one.

I just ordered the Nuphy Air75 v2 with cowberry switches (got the wisteria switches in addition since the keyboard was sold out with them pre installed).
I have the k3 max and k3 v2 that I’ve been auditioning and they leave me in a weird spot. I like the softer key caps on the k3 v2, especially since they are shine through, but the k3 max is more future proof. Both have pretty poor switches and sound. Hoping the Nuphy ends up being a better out of the box experience.

Im kinda confused about your opinion on the K3 Max tbh, coming straight from your comparison between the K3v2 and the Pro. The Pro and the Max basically use the same switches and in that video you said that you clearly preferred the Pro over the K3v2, but here its suddenly completely the opposite?
The core difference between those boards is that the K3v2 is using Keychrons own optical switches, while the Pro and Max use mechanical Gaterons. The later are significantly better for any Hot Swap compatibility, because most other companies like Kailh use the same switch-style with for example their Choc 2s or their low profile POM switches in collaboration with lofree.
And i think especially for markets outside of the US it is very important to point that difference out - the Pro and Max can be easily modded with switches that you like more; the K3v2 can only use other optical Keychron switches.
As a german for example i literally dont have any other choice than Keychron if i want them to be low profile, have an ISO-DE layout and being hot swapable. Nuphy doesnt offer ISO layouts, lofree doesnt offer them and after asking them that doesnt seem to change in the near future either.
So im currently waiting for the K3 Max to arrive, but also for the lofree POM Phantom switches and hope that i can build something that comes as close to the typing feel of the lofree Flow as possible, but with all the Keychron features. We will see how and if thats gonna work.
Also i dont like the Keycaps of the K3v2. For one they started to shine in no time, making them look incredibly cheap (newer ABS caps from Keychron are much better in that regards) and due to the barely existing contour of the caps it created a lot of typos for me.

Yep, I understand that. Bear in mind that my K3V2vsK3Pro video was posted back in Jan 2023 and I've tested a lot of keyboards since then. I wouldn't say here it's the opposite of my thoughts- if forced to choose between those boards I'd still get the Pro for the reasons you mention. But here my clear preference here was the V1 Max which was superior in almost every way to the K3 Max. I should probably try different switches on the K3 Max as I suspect I've grown tired of the Gateron browns over time. I particularly like the sound/feel of the K3v2 which may be just me with rose-tinted specs on!
I'm curious to know how you get on with the modding and trying to create Lofree/Kailh POM/K3 frankenstein....you could be onto something there!

@@ThatMarkGilroy I havent said anything about the V1. In the end those boards are way to different to compare simply because of their switches. Who searches for a low profile, wont go for a V1 and im saying that as someone who atm types that on a V3. (hence i mentioned the vastly improved ABS quality on those caps) :)
It is just weird to hear so different statements back to back. Im mainly referring to the part at 6:43 where you make it sound like the typing on the K3Max feels pretty bad in comparison to the "gorgeous" K3v2, while again you had a clear preference for the K3Pro in that past comparison video, which is basically just the Max again with less dampening material in it and no 2.4Ghz mode.
I havent had any experience with Gaterons low profile switches yet (i like the normal ones tho), but at least i can straight up draw a comparison when i have both at hand.
And im probably going to make a video about that experiment anyway. ISO-countries really have it hard when it comes to keyboards. :D

I don't own any. I was looking at buying some good keyboard for me as software developer with 15+ years of experience but realized that all problems I started feeling wouldn't be solved with classic keyboard no matter how good keyboard is. I am looking to buy ZSA Voyager (only lack of wireless connectivity is minus there) since I got used to Magic keyboard low profile and that such keyboard can easily go with me to the office butbalso to the home since I like hybrid work mode
