💡My buyer's guide has just been updated to include the new 7th gen iPad Mini - grab it here if you're not sure about which iPad to buy this year! the-modern-geek.ck.page/f3f784695e
As a professional musician who just saw both iPads today in person, they're amazing. Unfortunately for me (lol), I use my Ipad for work (reading music, writing in it, collecting scores, and for teaching/gigging). Additionally, I use it for all my entertainment needs (watching movies and shows, as well as music). The speakers make a huge difference in sound quality and the screen really packs a punch. I'll continue to think about it but I am leaning to the Pro.
I've got the new 13" pro upgrading from my m1 11" pro. Even as someone who's more of an intermediate musician, it's a huge upgrade for having charts on a music stand (especially using it outside) and multitasking (extreme case: Timpani sheet, instrument tuner, and metronome). The 13" air will be easier on the budget and can still do these things, but that 1000 nits of brightness is really nice if you play outside or on a brightly lit stage.
@@DanielMakesCadences that’s great to hear, thank you for the input! I’ve got a 2nd Gen Pro so I’m sure anything will be a jump up for me lol. The brightness factor sounds great, though I’ll end up throwing on a screen protector to avoid glares.
I get that Apple can’t outright market this at over 70s, but I agree it’s perfect for them. Similarly at the other end of the scale it’s a good tablet for younger children, say 10ish and up.
@@FuriousNovaSS And wait for another 6 month again? There's always something better and faster around the corner and if your current device does everything you want to, there's no need for FOMO.
@@AntodyFor the iPad 10 I agree. For the Mini, I REALLY suggest waiting. It would have been 3 years since it came out, so the upgrade for it will be much greater and I think it would be a big mistake to buy one at full price now. If it’s heavily discounted on Amazon, which it often is, then probably go for it. Otherwise maybe wait to see what happens at the iPhone event
I no longer carry a phone since I purchased an Apple Watch with cellular. My iPhone permanently lives in my cars center console where it stays connected wirelessly to my vehicles hands free systems. I keep it charged via the USB port within the console. The iPad mini 6 is my go to, go anywhere device. Reading, surfing, banking … everything. Small device with a large screen, what more could I ask for? I also own an I pad pro that mostly collects dust as I found the size and weight to be cumbersome and uncomfortable for casual usage. If Apple came out with an iPad mini pro, or some other type of high end mini, I would purchase it in a heart beat.
@baki4175 0 seconds ago I have my ipad 9th too. I use it for my clients, games, watching movies, making fitness programs, reading books and it’s very helpful. But if I’ll upgrade soon, I’ll have the ipad air
After seeing that nano-textured display in the store, it really seems pointless. Just get a paper-like screen protector. It's nicer, you can remove it if you want, and it doesn't fade the colors as much. From what I've seen, the nano texture is nice at first, but then it collects fingerprints really badly and doesn't look as sharp.
One thing to note about the iPad mini. If using the touchscreen keyboard. It’s the easiest to use without massive hand stretches in both landscape and horizontal
At 82 I find myself with an embarrassment of tablets. 12.9 2nd Gen, Mini 6, Air M2 11, Kindle Scribe. I use 'em for scribbling notes and editing photo-audio-video, and for sheet music for singing. The Mini is adorable, Grandpa 12.9 is lovely for editing photos, Air 11 M2 is a beast for speed - it vacuums in music scores like a hardcore wind tunnel. The Scribe is the pinnacle for handwriting, and of course, reading books. So much to explore - looking forward to brainstorming on the Air (big fan of Justin Sung).
The way I see it is, the only people that might need the ipad pro really, are users that need the extra ram. ( editors, and 3d sculptors mostly ). Those two fields require boat loads of ram, where even 16gb that the ipad pro has is not enough. Everyone else could get by easily with an ipad air. I went to a store recently and there was a family buying an ipad pro and the youngling was asking for an ipad pro with 1tb. when she was asked by the employee what this ipad will be used for she answered note taking in university. complete overkill.
Luckily the employee was at least somewhat honest with the family. Told them to just get a 256gb version and an external drive when needed. Imo he should have told them to just get the 13"air
My wife has the latest iPad Mini and uses it mainly for reading. She admits that she probably only uses 10% of its capabilities, but it’s so much better for reading than on her smartphone. Until the new A chip comes out this year, there is no point in upgrading the Apple Mini because the current chip is more than powerful enough. I expect the iPad Mini will be updated with the latest A chip at the end of the year. The only other update you can make to the iPad Mini is with the Face ID. One option for the iPad Mini is to expand its capability to act as a screen for the HomePod or Smart Display like the StandBy brought in with iOS 17.
I'd happily take a slightly thicker iPad Mini in exchange for a brighter/faster screen, face ID and a better battery. That would make it pretty much perfect for me.
I use my ipad as purely a supplementary device for school, not as a laptop. I have my Macbook for that. I also have it at 64 GB since I didn’t want to spend too much for a device I intend to use for school and content consumption. It’s holding up really well. Wish it was 120 hz but it doesn’t bother me as much as I thought despite my Mac and iphone having ProMotion.
By far, the iPad mini is my absolute favorite of all the iPads. I had one when they first came out. I upgraded along the way and I’m on my second upgrade now which is the iPad mini six and I will definitely be upgrading to the seven when it’s announced this October explanation.
I was so determined to buy the new iPad Air 11" 128gb until I watched some reviews. Now, I could really use some help deciding which iPad to buy. I will mainly use it for studying/reading, social media, watching videos, and maybe some drawing in my free time. (I already have a MBP M2). I am really torn between the iPad 10th gene (256gb) with the USB-C Pencil and the new iPad Air because they are both in the same price range.
If those are your main use cases I can see why you’re between these two options. I think the iPad Air M2 will still be the better buy. You get an extra inch of screen size and it’s a better screen, camera, battery to boot. The only catch is you’ll need to buy a new Apple Pencil Pro if you want it to charge wirelessly as the new camera position doesn’t support the old gen.
I absolutely agree that iPad does not need to be a MacBook, but I think it should intergrade more with Mac. The current Sidecar option is just weak. It would be nice for the iPad to became a fully featured touch/pen interface that enhances the Mac, something that utilise the thunderbolt connection. The naming scheme of Apple products is just confusing. It'd be more understandable with iPad SE, the iPad line (iPad mini, iPad, iPad Plus) and iPad Pro line (iPad Pro and iPad Pro Max). It would work the same with iPhones too, iPhone SE, iPhone mini, iPhone, iPhone Plus, iPhone Pro, iPhone Pro Max. MacBooks as well for that matter, MacBook(13"), MacBook Plus(15"), MacBook Pro(14") and MacBook Pro Max(16"). The "Air" suffix just isn't relevant with tech nowadays and Apple should just ditch it entirely. Well, what do I know.
@@VictorIbelles I dunno, it's Apple, they should be doing something more meaningful. Even Nintendo made better usage out of the secondary touch screen on the NDS. Have purposefully designed apps that make use of the iPad touch interface, the gyroscope, the pencil, making the iPad an extension of the Mac.
I got the iPad mini 6 since Christmas of 2022, its the pink 256gb, I absolutely love my mini, but my productivity has gotten more and more active and need something faster, more creative and productive and larger, so I am upgrading to the Air 6. I will most likely keep the mini however if it comes down to budget I will probably use it as a trade-in.
I've had mine for a similar period and I'm just starting to notice it start to struggle with some tasks. A processor/screen/battery bump would do wonders to breathe new life into this model!
I have a bit of a different dilemma. Both my laptop and my iPad are over 8 years old. Although a senior, I enjoy creating and playing around with Music and Windows functionality, which is driving me to buy an iPad Pro plus either a Mac or Laptop. The age-old question is, do I need to buy a Mac?
My thought is really for being able to write and develop some tunes using staffpad and Moises. Must admit I thought about just getting an iPad Pro with keyboard but it seems cheaper and get some more flexibility but read that the iPad is good for doing day to day stuff.
Ah. In that case I’d recommend the new iPad Air models. They’re cheaper than the Pro models, have all the writing capabilities, and come with a (cheaper) keyboard option. And you also get the option of a larger screen!
I used to have an ipad air 1, but then I realized I had been ignoring my macbook since. Then I upgraded to ipad mini 6/64gb. I can tell you it was my BEST purchase in 2023. It fits the budget, also fits in my small purse. It doesn’t replace my macbook and iPhone, but it can do a ton of things. I use it daily for note taking (both with apple pen and 3rd party keyboard), drawing, online meeting, reading articles, watching videos, playing video games, social medias, and as an extension of my macbook (using handoff). I even plugged it on HDMI to TV to watch movies in bigger screen (the battery longevity surprises me). Is 64gb enough? Surprisingly, yes. Mine doesn’t even take up half of the space.
@@ThatMarkGilroy in addition to, for the jelly scrolling and 60hz refresh rate are not an issue for me. You won’t even notice it unless you put another device side by side as the comparison. I even lower my 15 pro iphone to 60hz instead of 120hz to save up battery life.
Watching using my iPad 9th generation. This is the best value Apple tech that is still worthy this year until next 2 years. I use this for streaming shows, UA-cam, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, viewing my digital magazines, emails, web browsing, gaming and other social media apps. All good for an affordable price woohooo 😊😊
my 82 years old grandma loves ipad 9 gen because of wider side edges, so she can hold it easily without accidently touching the screen. My i pad 10, which i have, she can not even get to her shaky hands. Also my kids prefer more i pad 9 over ipad 10 because they can hold it more easily. So for me is ipad 9 gen better even with it is older generation of i pad.
As much as I wanted the Pro, I couldn’t justify the price for what I plan on using it for. When I get home from work, I find myself playing games on my phone, watching videos, streaming podcasts or movies, all your normal leisure activities. I decided the M2 iPad Air was the way to go. Only downside is the speakers aren’t that great, but I plan on using my AirPods anyways. I don’t really care about a 60hz display because my iPhone has ProMotion & can do everything with ease. I just want a bigger screen for use at home. Instead of my ProMax.
Thanks for this review. I just tradedin my 12.9 inch Pro from 2018. The battery was starting to fade and it is heavy. I think I am going with the 11 inch Air M2.
I’m still working with a regular iPad 5th Gen (2017) and it still works very well, it’s has minor moments where it shows it’s age but still runs what i need unlike the ipad mini that I also have that came out after it, very past it’s prime. Honestly might wait another year to see if they put the M1 or M2 in the regular IPad since there’s not any reason for the old bionic chip set to be used going further.
So, here's a question then from someone who is wanting to video record/edit personal podcast video and audio on the go and still study for messages, send/receive emails, manage calendars, read, and have all the productivity associated with smartphones now while allowing my phone to be exactly what it is which is a phone, would an M2 or M3 iPad air work for me? I don't completely understand the specs or what is needed, all I know is I don't have to have the biggest, best, or newest thing just because they reveal something claiming it to be "newer" and "better" than previous models. I have apple products, but I've always thought that they charged way too much. And trying to work with a budget the new iPad pro is a big ask right now. Also thank you for such detailed videos. They've really helped. I actually seen a comment on the last video of yours I watched where someone said they use a Mac mini and an iPad air which I am heavily considering now seeing as I'm looking for versatility, portability, and ease of use. Either that or I'm going to start checking the refurb market for an M2 iPad Pro. Thanks in advance!
@@ThatMarkGilroy If you're referring to the video editing app probably final cut pro 2 seeing as it seems to be the best for editing video footage on an iPad and just pay the monthly sub for it. As far as taking video would probably primarily be my phone starting out or the iPad itself. I may use my wife's Sony A6000 if it shoots decent video.
@@ryanbrooks1325 Well, you could definitely do all that on iPad Air that case. 👍🏻 If you didn’t fancy Logic there’s also Riverside which has a decent editor built in (web based). You might want to check out the 13” version for the extra screen space you’d get for editing/emails.
@@ThatMarkGilroy thanks for the advice! Very much appreciated. I think the Mac mini and iPad Air will probably be the direction I go with everything considered. Do you know of any good second hand places to look?
I have an M1 iPad Air 256gb, it is in perfect condition. I want to upgrade to and M2 but honestly for my needs, I only play Hearthstone, and a few other mobile games and watch TV and Videos, there would be no difference in performance for me. I am only thinking of doing it for the $300 trade in credit. I would like a Mini but they did not release a new one and I suspect it is by design.
iPad Pro m1 11” mostly for mobile gaming, top tablet. Who would need Air with 60 FPS screen limitation? You need 90- 120 FPS to play games at competitive level .( WARZONE , PUBG mobile etc) Going for M4 absolutely, next month or earlier.
I think the Ipad pro needs an ipados pro. That is make stage manager a Mac like UI. A desktop option similar to Samsung Dex only better. Some Mac OS capabilities such that Ipad Pro apps would be "lite" versions of Mac programs. This would allow the ipad pro to supplement the Mac. Transfer data file from Mac to ipad for use while traveling where the MacBook would practical. Being able to travel light yet still be able to get work done.
Great minds think alike. In this video I explain 3 ways Apple can solve this problem and the 'Dex' solution is one of them! ua-cam.com/video/1oh8rqGyd4A/v-deo.html
@@ThatMarkGilroy it’s fantastic iPad Air 6 with M2 I compared to my iPad 10th generation not much difference especially basic stuff like UA-cam and music streaming
@@ThatMarkGilroy Both really. To me, photos taken on Apple devices look great, but don’t look professional due to the generic Apple processing. Since everyone has it, it doesn’t look very professional (IMO). For editing, Lightroom for iPad slightly downscales images and is just slightly less robust in general. Still, photos taken and processed on Apple devices look great and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to take photos that look substantially better to the nonprofessional. AI is in the process of ruining photography anyway, so in a few years I think these arguments won’t matter.
I think, to replace my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5”, it will be a 11” iPad air w/ 512 storage. 13” just seems to large for my use, and M4 pro is too much for me…
They’re very nearly the same device. The only differences are the iPad Pro 2022 will give you Face ID, 4 speaker sound, pro motion display, pro res video recording. If you don’t care about those, you’ll be better off with the new Air. Given your use cases, I’d personally go for the new iPad Air as the Apple Pencil Pro is full of great features for artists that won’t work with the iPad Pro 2022.
What would you recommend for someone who already has an M1 Pro MacBook Pro for work and an iPhone 15 pro max. I just want something to ft people on and watch entertainment with a bigger screen. I don’t play games or download a lot.
iPad Air 💯(I’d have said Mini but you mention you want a bigger screen) However…you might want to take a look at one in store. If you already have a 15 Pro Max and MPB you’ll find the screens and refresh rates on both devices considerably brighter/faster. I can’t tell the difference between my 15 Pro Max/MPB/iPad Mini but some are bothered by it.
@@chrispurcell3671 In my view it’s for kids and pensioners. Genuinely - I can’t think of any reason to buy the 10th gen unless extremely budget conscious (in which case, go previous gen Air/Pro and get refurbished) you want super basic features. It’s the least powerful iPad of the current line up, of all with the worst quality screen.
I have a MacBook Pro m3 pro 14 inch and 15 pro max phone in debating between an iPad mini or the new air m2 as I used to have an iPad Pro m1 but I miss my iPad. I don’t need the pro as my Mac is the power machine
I have the same setup. But I’d still struggle to recommend the Mini unless it’s going to be 80% used for note taking and reading digital books etc. For the same price (OK, $50 more) the new Air offers far more bang for buck.
Just be wary of buying a 64GB unit unless all you want is streaming. The latest iPadOS takes up around 17GB so you only really have around 40GB to play with, and that’s before installing any of the apps you want.
@@courtneytaylor3502 Absolutely. Unfortunately you’ll need to buy the new pencil pro to use with it as it’s the only Apple Pencil that works with the new iPad Air/Pros
Hi! If you're thinking of upgrading and you have the budget to upgrade go for it. The iPad 10th gen with the new magic keyboard folio is a very nice setup which gives you a bigger/better screen, faster processor, and will run you $700(ish) without a trade in applied for everything (256GB model). If you went for the Air that would be much faster, future-proofed with the new Apple Intelligence features that are releasing in 2024/2025, but quite a bit more expensive (closer to $1000 for 256GB and keyboard).
Ah. Well I can give you a very accurate take on that as I used to have the A1584 before I moved to the iPad Mini. In short- yes, the difference in display will be very noticeable in almost all settings.
That’s the ‘problem’ with iPads. Apple make them to last! Incremental upgrades make it hard for them to sell new units as the ones from 4-5 years ago work brilliantly. It’s a good thing for the consumer!
I really love your content, and I love how genuine and upfront you are! You have a great speaking voice as well, and it's very relaxing! You definitely have a voice for radio too! 📻 ❤😊
I tend to go for the latest tech but this time I choose the Air over the Pro. Happy with my decision. Allows me to purchase the accessories I want and up the storage. As far as display goes I have been completely satisfied since iPad gen 1.
I use Mini and its a great device with size and form factor. Why does Apple don't give Mini the Stage Manager support either by M series processor or in the same processor itself. That's the only feature which holds me back many times while multitasking or apps which are not native to iPad but only iPhone optimised. Also, it should give WhatsApp atleast similar to desktop version. Other apps like Telegram or Signal ate running fine on it. But as WhatsApp is the most used for many specific purpose its really sas that WhatsApp is not there.
It definitely would/could. But you might want to try them in store side by side as I know some digital artists find the responsiveness of the iPad Pro screen makes a big difference when they’re creating.
Aside from all your points if you draw on the iPad period go for the pro. No ones talking about the latency of the air with the pencil. Haven’t heard it from any reviewer most likely because they’re not artists and haven’t used it for drawings or you’re just reading specs ……….
All these comments and not one mentions repairability or serialised parts. Some people can have more money than sense, thinnest does not mean it's the best and you'll pay through the nose for extra ram, storage, better screen, nano something and molecular something else.
If you’re bothered about screen quality and weight in a way that would make you lean towards the M2 Pro, I’d still pick the M4 if budget will allow. If your needs are just about pure processing power and the ability to have a 120hz screen, the M2 Pro is worth shortlisting.
@@ThatMarkGilroy My troubles with M1- M2 tablets is that they getting hot quite easily and straight after that screen starting to dim and CPU throttling. Apple claims they seriously improved cooling system for M4 tablets, so hopefully it is not the issue anymore, otherwise what’s the point of this horsepower if after 30 mins of gaming it became useless. I currently using active cooling ( heatsink with fan at the back of the IPad ) while gaming to prevent throttling but hopefully it won’t be an issue with the new IPad Pro
Ipad air 11 m2 with 256gb should serve well for 5yrs. But then 300 usd more i will have m4 chip. Personally I need something that will last 5 yrs with no issues (no space for update, slow down speed, freezing etc)
I’d hang fire and see what they announce at WWDC in June. There HAS to be a reason they’ve put M4 in an iPad over just showing off. If Apple don’t bump up ipadOS in a big way then you’ll know the Air is the way!
I'm buying the 11 inch iPad Air because I think it's still just as powerful as the Pros. 👍🏻 And it's not so expensive! Everyone keeps telling me though I need to buy the iPad Air 5 because it's pretty much the same but I want the newer model!
You can always tell them that (although the base specs are similar on both air models), it’s not just the new chip that’s new. The M2 Air gives you the new centred front facing camera, Apple Pencil pro compatibility, 512B and 1TB storage options, and better WiFi/bluetooth. 😉
@@ThatMarkGilroy that's how I feel too. I get people are suggesting it to help people save money but sometimes people just want the new stuff regardless 😉💯👍🏻
Newer model was $50 cheaper for me. I bought the 5th thinking the new one would be more than I wanted to spend. Luckily they made an exception and let me return it to get the new one
I watched this and found it very informative. I currently have a 2019 Chromebook that is getting glitchy (I also have a MacBook) so I want to updgrade to an iPad. Mostly I will be using it for email, web browsing, a little gaming, possibly creating some instagram or TikTok videos. So I am in a quandry as to which model to get. I downloaded your buyers guide and it came out either straight iPad or the Air (borderline). So I still have questions, but my biggest question is why you said to never get the standard gb memory, which is 64 on the iPad and 128 on the Air.
@@sylviaauclair5112 Thanks Sylvia- glad it was helpful! My point about memory was (unless you keep almost all your photos/files in the cloud) 64GB is nowhere near enough for most people. The last big iPadOS update took up 17GB alone. 128GB is a bare minimum for any model I’d say. You should be fine with the straight iPad- it’ll handle all those needs without any issues. For future proofing (thinking ahead to what Apple intelligence will bring in 2024/2025) only the new iPad Air will give you access to that when it comes. Hope that helps!
It's been weeks since I've been started debating on whether to get the mini, the classic, or the air. I really want to use it for watching media and gaming so I'm leaning more to the mini. But since the pricing is to similar to the air, I'm thinking that too. But again, since the air is the same size as the classic but of course cheaper, then idk really now lol I'm thinking of getting it after iPhone 16 is released so I have still time to decide.
It’s a tough call! If it’s about media and gaming the new M2 Air would be my bet. Plus you’ll benefit from all the Apple Intelligence features coming later in the year.
Ipad pro had been my portable art tool for years. Ipad software is optimized for that screen and input methods, having mac os wouldn´t make much sense on ipad since desktop software is way more cluttered for smaller screens. However file management could get on macOS level 😅
My parents absolutely LOVE their 10th gen! They FaceTime, email, play games, watch TikTok, etc. on theirs!! My parents love to try to beat each others scores in their iPad honey 🤣 it’s so cute!! I just got myself a 13in Air
I have an option to buy a used ipad pro M1 12.9 16gb 1tb with apple pencile and magic keyboard for 1300€, it works as new and was used with care. Do you think I should get it?
I don’t see why the 10th gen should be called the Classic, nothing about it is classic or legacy. It’s just an iPad Air 4 with some changes, mainly downgrades. The home button iPad 9 and previous could have been named Classic though. I do think they need to rebrand the whole line. It is very confusing when the iPad Pros are lighter and thinner than the Air, which is near identical to the 10. I think they should do this iPad Air becomes simply iPad, the main device for anyone iPad Mini remains the same but gets a chip upgrade and hopefully display upgrade iPad 10th gen becomes iPad SE, because it reuses parts from the older higher end iPads, just like the iPhone SE
I was thinking about the 10th generation since like I said it’ll be for basic use but the mini sounds perfect until you get to the 256gb price which is identical to the Air. I think it’ll be between the mini and Air for me, just have to go in person to see which size I like best
@@waliyyahb.396 Good idea. Some people fall in love with the mini size and some realise instantly it’s not enough for them. My two cents: the M-series Air is the only iPad of these two that’ll be compatible with all of the Apple Intelligence features that are coming this/next year. These will be a gamechanger for iPad users and I’d hate for you to miss out on them! Of course if Apple release an M-chip Mini model this year it’ll be game on.
I wont upgrade my 11 inch iPad Pro M1 until December my M1 it still good to use the only thing i use my M1 most of the time is watchin UFC movies tv show and UA-cam thats all i do most of the time with my 11 inch iPad Pro M1
Quite satisfied with my iPad Pro 3rd Gen + wireless Pencil, 256gb … though for future-proofing, considering upgrade. Your talk on the 13" Air @ 512gb got my interest, though with trade-in, the iPad Pro 13" (Logic Pro user), graphics/photography/art are to be considered before making the jump up/next 🤔 … liked your presentation, much appreciated 👍🏼 All the best
I haven't had an iPad before, and I want to choose between the 11-inch and 13-inch 2024 iPad Air for illustration purposes, and I won't regret buying it. How much memory do you need and what do you suggest? thank you
That's me too! I'm going back and forth between the 11" and 12.9" ipad pro, 256GB. Want to use it for digital art. Please update me on your decision☺️ thank youuu
For illustration/digital art, you'll find the extra screen space handly, so I'd go for the 13 inch of either tablet. As for memory, it kind of depends how you normally keep stuff stored - if you're happy working off external drives/cloud storage to offload finished projects you might be fine with just 256GB...I tend to begrudge paying Apple's storage tax so I think you're unlikely to need more than 512GB if you have access to other forms of storage. Hope that helps.
@@slavica6483 worth noting that when you go past 1TB storage you also get a processor and RAM bump. You can’t get these unless you also buy the extra storage. Sneaky Apple.
@@iitmathlab If those are your use cases, I’d prioritise paying for bigger storage over processor power. The difference between M1 and M2 will be barely noticeable.
I might upgrade from my iPad Air 2, which still runs relatively smoothly, to an iPad 10 later this year. Although it would actually be a downgrade in terms of display, which is laminated on my Air 2. Do you think we might see an iPad 11th Gen this year?
Yeah, I'd hold on if you can. The 10th gen iPad was released in 2022 so it is likely to be approaching the end of the cycle. If an 11th gen drops it's likely to be in the last quarter of this year.
I'm actually trying to decide between an iPad Air M2 or an iPad Pro M2 (2022), if I can find one new at a similar price, where I live. That and the screen size, still deciding between 11" and 13". I come from an iPad 6th gen (2018). I'll try to see in person both devices in both sizes whenever possible, maybe that will help. One thing which makes me confused is that I never heard any confirmation about the support from Apple on older devices with the same processor. I mean, will the iPad Pro M2 be supported (getting major version updates) as long as the Air M2, which is 2 years younger, just because the internals are basically the same for the devices?
Yeah, I don’t think you’ll need to worry about the iPad Pro M2 being supported for much less time than the iPad Air (if at all). I usually work on the basis that most Apple devices should last 6-7 years before showing any signs of needing upgrades (except iPhones). If you’re comparing those two devices the key things I’d consider are: - Screen resolution / quality (both have good screens but Pro will be faster, brighter and clearer, especially noticeable with the 13” size) - Apple Pencil support. M2 Air will require you to buy a new Apple Pencil Pro due to the layout of the front facing camera, whereas the M2 Pro works with the Gen 2 pencil - Rear facing camera/pro res. In the unlikely event you want your iPad to shoot professional quality video - you’ll get that in spades with the M2 Pro.
Only go for the iPad Pro M2/ 4th gen if you care about the screen resolution / refresh rate or ProRes video. For all else you’ll be absolutely fine with the new M2 Air and new Pencil Pro.
Honestly i just want an ipad for the bigger screen, to Learn how to animate, chill and watch videos, play games, help me with my school stuff etc... I think I'm gonna get the ipad 10 or air m1 or 2 Because i don't have much money i think i'll get the 10 or the m1
Ah - that wasn't me. It was taken from the recent Apple iPad event, where the CEO of Procreate showed how the live animation features work - pretty cool. More at ua-cam.com/video/LbIB-mCoLrs/v-deo.html

Great information and well done decision making. I still sit on the fence. I have a very nice 12.9 2tb version and the change of the camera and speakers and display want me to tilt over and get it. Sigh.
thanks for this great video! but can you do a video where you compare iPad air 2024 and the pro 2022? both of them have M2 chip and they are now in the same price point (i mean maybe...?) im curious because the pro has 120hz but the air has a long standing support
I am considering buying a mac for my upcoming Uni start and am worried about the lacking touch for notes and solving exercises. So I am looking for an Ipad that does just that and maybe a little more so I could occasionally leave the mac at home and rely solely on the Ipad for a while. Which one do you think is the best device for this use case?
As a student in Highschool who is allowed to take notes digitally I’m faced with the situation of choosing between a 13 m2 IPad Air with keyboard and Apple Pencil or m3 MacBook Air Any thoughts?
I actually would advise the 13” MacBook Air with keyboard and pencil. The MacBook has more grunt but you’ll be able to do LOADS with the iPad setup - it’ll be like a Swiss Army knife for your studies. Would 100% advise checking out goodnotes app for your lessons- it’ll allow you to record them as you’re taking notes and replay with your handwritten notes appearing in line with the audio.
Criticize ipad for only being an ipad IS RELEVANT, yes sir! Not to suggest implementation of macOS on it, but to question why we still don't have implementation of the folders management or the multitask layout. Those features are incomplete from the day of launching.
@ThatMarkGilroy I already have an M1 pro MBP 14 . I’m thinking of buying an ipad so I can use it as an extended display for my mac. What do you suggest? I’m so confused rn
I just got rid of my iPad 9th generation and I’m looking for a slight upgrade. This was a very helpful video THANK YOU. I’ve narrowed my choices to the mini and the air, It would be for personal use, note taking, journaling etc so while the mini is enticing the air may seem more bang for my buck.
As soon as they reduced the price I got my elderly mum to upgrade to iPad 10th generation from her 2017 model. It's absolutely perfect for her
I get that Apple can’t outright market this at over 70s, but I agree it’s perfect for them. Similarly at the other end of the scale it’s a good tablet for younger children, say 10ish and up.
@@ThatMarkGilroy yes absolutely it does everything she needs. I use the iPad mini 6 and absolutely love it but it might be too small for her
I would double check, I heard a rumor that the mini & regular iPads might be getting upgrades in the Fall/winter of this year.
Guess we’re about to find out what the next version of the iPad Mini looks like….!
I love my I pad 9th gen for reading textbook library books and streaming.since I’m not an artist I don’t need anything too fancy
Very nice Will!

I have my ipad 9th too.
AND Apple are super specific about how it’s cleaned.
@@ThatMarkGilroy yeah there's a reason why Apple includes that cleaning cloth 😂👍🏻
@@m.hreels9822 For those artists who the iPad Pro and Pencil for drawing, the nano-textured display makes a big difference.
One thing to note about the iPad mini. If using the touchscreen keyboard. It’s the easiest to use without massive hand stretches in both landscape and horizontal
Good point - it's a one-hander device for sure.
There has to be a better word than ‘embarrassment’ for a collection of tablets.
I’ll go with ‘a quarry of tablets’. 😁
Also 1TB 😬😬😬
Luckily the employee was at least somewhat honest with the family. Told them to just get a 256gb version and an external drive when needed. Imo he should have told them to just get the 13"air
Thank you for explaining what the pro is for. I could never figure that out but certainly wanted one and now I know I didn’t need it.
Let's hope we get one this year!
Here in Srilanka, there's only a 170$ difference between the 256gb m2 air and m4. Any suggestions?
Interesting. Get the Pro. For $170 it’s definitely worth the extra.
@ThatMarkGilroy Thanks
SE’s a good idea for the iPad line! Like it.
While it’s not a default function there’s apps that do that I like splashtop for example, it’s free
Thrilled with my iPad 13” Pro, easy to hold in my hands YouTubing…11” too small. Bought a cover case to make it easier to hold.
Nice. Which case did you get?
I am going for the “classic” I need basic and I love the colors.
I love those bold colours too!
Hi Craig- happy to help! What's your thinking behind having both iPad and a Mac/Laptop, rather than one or the other?
My thought is really for being able to write and develop some tunes using staffpad and Moises. Must admit I thought about just getting an iPad Pro with keyboard but it seems cheaper and get some more flexibility but read that the iPad is good for doing day to day stuff.
Ah. In that case I’d recommend the new iPad Air models. They’re cheaper than the Pro models, have all the writing capabilities, and come with a (cheaper) keyboard option. And you also get the option of a larger screen!
@@ThatMarkGilroy thanks
Preaching. Choir. 🙌🏻
@@ThatMarkGilroy in addition to, for the jelly scrolling and 60hz refresh rate are not an issue for me. You won’t even notice it unless you put another device side by side as the comparison. I even lower my 15 pro iphone to 60hz instead of 120hz to save up battery life.
My iPad Air 2 turns 10 years old this year 🎉😅
Wow! I had that model too back in the day. Amazing that it’s still going strong.

Yep. I really can’t tell the difference between 60/120hz unless they’re constantly alongside each other.
Thanks for this review. I just tradedin my 12.9 inch Pro from 2018. The battery was starting to fade and it is heavy. I think I am going with the 11 inch Air M2.
Great choice!
I’m convinced they’re just using up old stock of those bionic chips from older phones.
@@ThatMarkGilroy or recycling them
Also still enjoy my iPad 5 gen
Thanks for the feedback Ryan. 👍🏻
Question to help
me answer your question - what would you be using to record/edit the podcasts on the go?
OK. Hands up who’s got an M-series iPad of any kind? How’s it holding up?
I currently have ipad pro m1 and I am mainly using it for playing pubg mobile ❤🎉
M1 iPad air but I prefer the mini. The only downside of the mini (for me) is the battery. The iPad air is, as you pointed out a bit of chunkster.
You need 90- 120 FPS to play games at competitive level .( WARZONE , PUBG mobile etc)
Going for M4 absolutely, next month or earlier.
I bought the air 13 last week and it’s great
I think the Ipad pro needs an ipados pro.

2:55 iPad OS is not good for professional photography.
Interested in your take? You mean for taking photographs or as an editing machine?
@@ThatMarkGilroy Both really. To me, photos taken on Apple devices look great, but don’t look professional due to the generic Apple processing. Since everyone has it, it doesn’t look very professional (IMO). For editing, Lightroom for iPad slightly downscales images and is just slightly less robust in general. Still, photos taken and processed on Apple devices look great and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to take photos that look substantially better to the nonprofessional. AI is in the process of ruining photography anyway, so in a few years I think these arguments won’t matter.
@@Svoboda1234 Ah, I see. I didn't know Lightroom on iPad did that!
I think, to replace my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5”, it will be a 11” iPad air w/ 512 storage. 13” just seems to large for my use, and M4 pro is too much for me…
I think about buying ipad (mostly for drawing and arts) and can't choose between Apple ipad Pro 2022 and ipad Air 2024.
Which one would you recommend?
I don’t play games or download a lot.
iPad Air 💯(I’d have said Mini but you mention you want a bigger screen)
However…you might want to take a look at one in store. If you already have a 15 Pro Max and MPB you’ll find the screens and refresh rates on both devices considerably brighter/faster. I can’t tell the difference between my 15 Pro Max/MPB/iPad Mini but some are bothered by it.

@@ThatMarkGilroy I was thinking the mini 64gb for media tbh but I see micro center havin the m2 air for 550 vs 400 for the mini

I hope they don’t do away with the mini i personally have loved mine but I’m upgrading to the air!
Yep, I can’t blame you! I think there’s a very intentional decision behind the pricing of the 256GB options of the Mini vs Air.

This is a lovely and informative video as always Mark! Keep doing your thing!!

have an ipad pro 2020, still don’t see any point to upgrade
That’s the ‘problem’ with iPads. Apple make them to last! Incremental upgrades make it hard for them to sell new units as the ones from 4-5 years ago work brilliantly. It’s a good thing for the consumer!

This is my 5th iPad. Costs less than the original 13" pro 128GB from 2015 (still have it) and runs circles around it.
Oh man I would LOVE to be able to run Stage Manager on the Mini.
Thanks for the video. Do you think the iPad Air with that screen quality would work for professional digital art?
It definitely would/could. But you might want to try them in store side by side as I know some digital artists find the responsiveness of the iPad Pro screen makes a big difference when they’re creating.
Aside from all your points if you draw on the iPad period go for the pro. No ones talking about the latency of the air with the pencil. Haven’t heard it from any reviewer most likely because they’re not artists and haven’t used it for drawings or you’re just reading specs ……….
Is it really noticeable? I tried it on both in store and couldn’t tell the difference but I’m not a digital artist!
@@ThatMarkGilroy I’m sure if you try it again you’ll notice the difference now that’s you’re looking for it.
All these comments and not one mentions repairability or serialised parts. Some people can have more money than sense, thinnest does not mean it's the best and you'll pay through the nose for extra ram, storage, better screen, nano something and molecular something else.
What about the m2 iPad Pro?
If you’re bothered about screen quality and weight in a way that would make you lean towards the M2 Pro, I’d still pick the M4 if budget will allow. If your needs are just about pure processing power and the ability to have a 120hz screen, the M2 Pro is worth shortlisting.
It’s kinda stupid that you have to pay $1000 to get more than 60hz. The air should have at least 90. At least that would be something
They won’t be able to sell PROs otherwise. So yes , want to get over 60 hz - buy Pro
There is the iPad Pro M2 with 120hz still. Some good bargains available for that model in the refurbished store, or direct.
Just found you, what an awesome informative video. Amazing , thank you🐞

@KenWhiffeyJr That’s very lucky! Nicely done.
Wonder if they didn't showcase a new Mini cause theyr'e retiring the product like the Mini iPhone.
Hopefully not!
It's been weeks since I've been started debating on whether to get the mini, the classic, or the air. I really want to use it for watching media and gaming so I'm leaning more to the mini. But since the pricing is to similar to the air, I'm thinking that too. But again, since the air is the same size as the classic but of course cheaper, then idk really now lol
I'm thinking of getting it after iPhone 16 is released so I have still time to decide.
I hear that. 👍🏻
My parents absolutely LOVE their 10th gen! They FaceTime, email, play games, watch TikTok, etc. on theirs!! My parents love to try to beat each others scores in their iPad honey 🤣 it’s so cute!! I just got myself a 13in Air
Wow! Thank you for this post. I’m now a new subscriber to outstanding information made for real people.
Leaning towards iPad 10th Gen. I'd go for the iPad mini if it gets a price drop.
If rumours are true you might get that price drop before the end of the year. There are some bargains to be had in refurbished in the meantime!
I have an option to buy a used ipad pro M1 12.9 16gb 1tb with apple pencile and magic keyboard for 1300€, it works as new and was used with care. Do you think I should get it?
That’s a good price - better than any you’ll find on the Apple refurbed store.
@@ThatMarkGilroy thabks soo much 💪
I don’t see why the 10th gen should be called the Classic, nothing about it is classic or legacy.
I think they should do this
iPad Air becomes simply iPad, the main device for anyone
iPad Mini remains the same but gets a chip upgrade and hopefully display upgrade
iPad 10th gen becomes iPad SE, because it reuses parts from the older higher end iPads, just like the iPhone SE
Great job with this video! Thank you for your work!
Thanks mate
Of course if Apple release an M-chip Mini model this year it’ll be game on.
any noticeable lag with the mini and 10th gen? i don't need a laptop replacement but i do play games and watch video a tons. help?
Depends on the kinds of games. Shouldn’t be anything really noticeable unless it’s the very latest processor-heavy titles.
I wont upgrade my 11 inch iPad Pro M1 until December my M1 it still good to use the only thing i use my M1 most of the time is watchin UFC movies tv show and UA-cam thats all i do most of the time with my 11 inch iPad Pro M1
Just this week, I traded my 12.9 inch iPad Pro (2020) for the 11 inch iPad Air M2 and could not be happier!
Awesome - enjoy!
@@slavica6483 I've replied above too - let me know how you get on!
@@slavica6483 worth noting that when you go past 1TB storage you also get a processor and RAM bump. You can’t get these unless you also buy the extra storage. Sneaky Apple.
@ThatMarkGilroy I decided to get the 12.9" ipad pro, 256GB. I ordered it today and can't wait for it to get here next week !!
I am looking for buy a ipad for teaching online , note making , reading and edit the videos . Which is best for me. I am not pro lover.
Definitely the new iPad Air 👍🏻
@@ThatMarkGilroy m1 or m2
@@iitmathlab If those are your use cases, I’d prioritise paying for bigger storage over processor power. The difference between M1 and M2 will be barely noticeable.
@@ThatMarkGilroy thanks 🙏
If you’re comparing those two devices the key things I’d consider are:
- Screen resolution / quality (both have good screens but Pro will be faster, brighter and clearer, especially noticeable with the 13” size)
- Apple Pencil support. M2 Air will require you to buy a new Apple Pencil Pro due to the layout of the front facing camera, whereas the M2 Pro works with the Gen 2 pencil
- Rear facing camera/pro res. In the unlikely event you want your iPad to shoot professional quality video - you’ll get that in spades with the M2 Pro.
Should I go for iPad Pro 11in 4th generation with pencil 2 or the new iPad Air 11in 2024 with Apple Pencil pro?
Only go for the iPad Pro M2/ 4th gen if you care about the screen resolution / refresh rate or ProRes video. For all else you’ll be absolutely fine with the new M2 Air and new Pencil Pro.
Love my mini 6!!!! Never giving it up
Are you never gonna let it down?
Honestly i just want an ipad for the bigger screen, to Learn how to animate, chill and watch videos, play games, help me with my school stuff etc...
I think I'm gonna get the ipad 10 or air m1 or 2
Because i don't have much money i think i'll get the 10 or the m1
In a few months the M2 Air should start showing up in Apple refurbished stores.
What’s the best iPad for college students ?
@@mrsalayjia hands down- iPad Air with keyboard and pencil. Some of the AI features coming this year are going to make this a great setup.
What app were you using around 1:13
Ah - that wasn't me. It was taken from the recent Apple iPad event, where the CEO of Procreate showed how the live animation features work - pretty cool. More at ua-cam.com/video/LbIB-mCoLrs/v-deo.html

I’m a student who has been saving up for an iPad preferably the air 4 but still struggling to have one up till now cause the ones sold down here are over priced due to inflation. What do you think I should do or is there any help I could get
@@danceg0d868 You do get a small discount direct from Apple. You can combo this with the certified refurbished section of their site to get quite a decent discount - I go into more detail in the download linked in the description.
@@ThatMarkGilroy thank you very much. But how am I meant to supposedly pay and have it delivered down to Africa
Great quality content creator 👏🏼
No discount on the paper like link? Wish I could save the tax or shipping at least.
Sorry Stacy. They only run discount codes periodically which I'd usually post on my community wall.
What iPad would you recommend for a college student who does not have an iPad and is strictly going to use for taking notes and watching videos and maybe some games
iPad Air - every day of the week. Not necessarily this recent model but you might want to look at the new size and see if the 13” is worth the extra.
Youve just become my favorite Mac Dude!
Thanks buddy. iPhone buyer's guide went up last week.
I have a Samsung S6 lite for music score reading.. it work perfectly 😊
Great information and well done decision making. I still sit on the fence. I have a very nice 12.9 2tb version and the change of the camera and speakers and display want me to tilt over and get it. Sigh.
That’s how they get you. I’m sure you’ll make the right call for you!
thanks for this great video! but can you do a video where you compare iPad air 2024 and the pro 2022? both of them have M2 chip and they are now in the same price point (i mean maybe...?) im curious because the pro has 120hz but the air has a long standing support
I will try! It's an important comparison.
ipad air 5th generation on sale at moment so good time to get one as long as in stock. my brother wanted one so orderd one for him
I am considering buying a mac for my upcoming Uni start and am worried about the lacking touch for notes and solving exercises. So I am looking for an Ipad that does just that and maybe a little more so I could occasionally leave the mac at home and rely solely on the Ipad for a while. Which one do you think is the best device for this use case?
Sounds like the Air will see you well my friend. Maybe consider the 13” for those times you might want to leave your Mac at home.
I'm thinking of getting a refurbished m1 iPad air, thoughts?
Yep, my advice here applies to the previous gen’s as well. 99% of people will be super happy with an iPad Air.
Thank you for this. I’m helping an elderly friend purchase an iPad and I didn’t know anything other than the pro. ❤❤❤❤
You’re welcome. 😉
As a student in Highschool who is allowed to take notes digitally I’m faced with the situation of choosing between a 13 m2 IPad Air with keyboard and Apple Pencil or m3 MacBook Air
Any thoughts?
I actually would advise the 13” MacBook Air with keyboard and pencil. The MacBook has more grunt but you’ll be able to do LOADS with the iPad setup - it’ll be like a Swiss Army knife for your studies. Would 100% advise checking out goodnotes app for your lessons- it’ll allow you to record them as you’re taking notes and replay with your handwritten notes appearing in line with the audio.
@@ThatMarkGilroy yeah, thanks for the reply 👍
@@ThatMarkGilroy i think you mean youd advise the ipad air
That’s right - get the new air and accessories over the MacBook Air for this use case.
Criticize ipad for only being an ipad IS RELEVANT, yes sir! Not to suggest implementation of macOS on it, but to question why we still don't have implementation of the folders management or the multitask layout. Those features are incomplete from the day of launching.
Not gonna argue with you on that one my friend. The files app has always been a MESS!
I am getting the m4 just for gaming and surfing in social media in a few weeks😂

I just got rid of my iPad 9th generation and I’m looking for a slight upgrade. This was a very helpful video THANK YOU.
I’ve narrowed my choices to the mini and the air, It would be for personal use, note taking, journaling etc so while the mini is enticing the air may seem more bang for my buck.
I'm going to pick up the Air soon for a direct comparison so stay tuned. I agree it's LOTS more bang for buck.
I have an iPad Mini and I'm very pleased. I don't like the trend of making these huge iPads/tablets.
It’s such a perfect size. Can’t wait to see what they do with the Mini next.
Which one will be great for an CSE Engineering students
Which ones are you already looking at? And is it in place of a laptop, or to sit alongside one?
Will the new ipad mini have an oled?
I hope it does...but I'd say it's pretty unlikely. The cost of putting OLED in that small a screen would make the price/profits unsustainable.
@ThatMarkGilroy let's hope they surprise us with it.
