I once had a 1990 RX-7 Convertible. I loved that car…alpine white with Navy blue interior. Marriage and children, forced a good bye. Years later, kids grown and fledging. My wife remembered my sadness at saying goodbye to that Mazda “big boy toy”……she agreed and I bought a 1990 Porsche 944s2 Cabriolet which I love just as much as I did that Mazda. I don’t know, maybe one day I’ll grow up…..and then again, maybe not! Great comparison!
I made it to 224,000 miles with my old 89 GXL before it popped on startup. What they were referring to was the very early models such as the 10A from 1969-71 that had 6mm carbon apex seals that would degrade with moisture and fuel contamination. One problem with the Renesis is that the apex seals are too short in height. What happens is when the engine is ran hard for a while the apex seals warp a bit and there is about a 10hp loss.
I'm on my ninth RX-7. I've been working with them for fifteen years. Six of them professionally at a place called Pineapple Racing. You will hear that name quite often once you become a rotary enthusiast. If you have any questions feel free to send me a message. Congrats on your new toy and welcome to alot of fun and many hours of upkeep. First thing to note. Normally it will burn about a quart of oil every thousand miles + or - a bit.
dude switching gears too early took mine to 9 plenty I had this car, and it was fast, but I had lighter after market rims with lower profiles on it, and it handled very good RX7
I'd say other than Mazda making the Renesis apex seals shorter in height and they can warp slightly losing a few pounds of compression and hot start issues. . What gave the rotary it's bad name was the old 10A with carbon apex seals. The engineers never put moisture into the thought while the engine was not running. Caused pitting in the apex seals and premature engine failure. This was fixed shortly after however gave the rotary a bad name. One of my FC's made it nearly 250k miles with all stock internals including the clutch. It just plain wore out. Keep on the maintenance and they will run a good long time.
....and fast foward to 2017, for £14,000 or £18,000 you'll get a cross dressing turd! FUN is unattainable in a new sports hot hatch or sports sedan that is under £20,000😣😣😣😣.
well this is not entierly true because of inflation. If you look it up 15000 pounds in 1986 is worth 41850 ponds in 2017 and you can get some quiet capable cars for 40k.
@@atomflunder2 Mazda don't offer anything like this anymore but the closest you could get is a SP25 mazda 3 today .It is way more practical and less embarrassing.I remembered my dad had a series 5 RX7 new in 1989 which in Aussie Money was $54,000(Could have waited and got himself a new Astina SP for roughly just over half the price instead two months when that came out later that year). It was so bad to the point we kids had to plead with our parents to finally be allowed to use public transport for school.
It's because Porsche beats up Mazda for copying his models to make it more exotic. The FC RX-7 refers to the Porsche 924S, The FD RX-7 refers to the Porsche Carrera 911, and the RX-8 refers to the Porsche Carrera GT! Mazda and Porsche started the lawsuit of sports cars!!!!! The rotary models were copying Porsche's designs! That's very offensive!
really because the rx7 fd3s looks completely different from the porsche hell the rx8 couldnt look more different the fc rx7 is the only one which seems to copy the design to the porsche
"the Porsche should hold it's value better in the second hand market I suppose" haha o boy if only he knew
Both great cars that screams 80's. I love them. I have a 924 myself and i adore it.
Venom S ....hope it is rust free and still be driven daily....my apex seal on my fc is prohibiting me to daily....wankel eh😅😅
@@princesssolace4337 yes It Needs to be drived every day because ignecnors whitout using car start working bad
4:20 my dude just grinded 3rd gear
RX-7 - "BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP" Guy - "Thank you very much"
sounded more like "urururrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggghhhhurgggggg". "BEEEP" makes it sound A LOT better than it does!
The RX7 in all its forms is one of the few Japanese cars that I could possibly go for - but that buzzer would drive me nuts. Have just bought a 924S.

Thank you! Finally a Brit who knows how to pronounce Porsche.
I wish I had one of those warning buzzers for the gear change.
Such a nice sound...no need for a stereo system then.
+Muttley Dawg i would probably get mad and after a while crash the car into a tree.
I'd replace the buzzer with a red light bulb
@@TheCrazyFinn if the buzzer is anoying to you, it's a good idea
That buzzer would drive me nuts!
I'm buying an 86' rx7 tomorrow. Nice video! The engine in the one I'm buying has only about 20k miles on it.. it's going to be fun =)

2:15 “..legless dwarves” Hah, try saying that in todays polite society...rather it’d be “appendaged disadvantaged little people.”
Absolutely. I'll always have a couple quarts on hand with this car! Thanks for the heads up, I'll check out Pineapple Racing!

Nearly 40 years on and I've been able to find one RX7 slightly below the new price in this clip, and about 10 924S' under the price in this clip.
Top 924 S !

Thanks for this,
At the end of the video they stated it was a 2354cc engine. However it was mentioned it was the equivalent to a 2.3 liter piston engine.
great comparison, it's like the Miata and the 124 spider...
I'd love an FC...sure the FD is blazing fast and sexy, but, just like the Supra, I prefer the much, MUCH cheaper late 80's versions.
sergio, open your ears. he said it like a 2.3 piston engine. never said its a 2.3 rotary.
That buzzer is a pain in the butt! If they haven´t manipulated with the video-clip the buzzer already comes just above 5.000 rpm. That´s fucked
i also have a rx-7 with a 13B engine

As of early 2016, The problem of copy machine drawing board and copy brain designers creating cars with absolutely no charisma, is still to be cured.
Wow a 2.3 rotary engine. Lol its a 1.3

This is why Mazda and Porsche were fighting for our favorite sports cars!
Mazda long ago cured any rotor tip problems.
