Good descriptive video about the joy of driving a 924S. I have owned my 1988 924S since 1994 and would never consider trading it in. I still get a buzz every time I drive it. It still turns heads and attracts appreciative looks and comments.
We own an 87 924s . Parents bought it new in 87 and my brother and I have since taken care of it . Garage kept it's entire life. Great sports car. Had to replace fuel sender and a couple parts fuel related but still runs smooth..
Very nice Porsche.. I am 61 and vividly remember these when they came out ! As you said, I like the simplicity and fun to drive factor, even without those extreme HP cars have nowadays... BTW, you are very talented at narrating these superbly done videos. Very pertinent comments, not all over the place and hyper-stressed like the VAST majority of car reviewers ! Your channel is really underated...Don't change your style and your video format ! Well done.
I ran a 1980 924 2.0 as my daily driver for 5 years. Not at all convenient, comfortable or reliable (it was neglected when I got it) but it was a lot of fun! I've never owned such a competent, flattering car again. Still miss it.
Nice insight into the cars strengths. A paradigm shifting car that affected the future of affordable sporting cars. I have the pinnacle (in my opinion) evolution of this car and love it, the 944 Turbo S
I had one of these as a young man. Loved it to bits, only sold it due to the crazy UK fuel prices. Yeah, very balanced, the only time I came close to a crash was pulling out of a junction in the rain, where it started going forward and then just stopped, sitting there wheelspinning. Had to mentally force myself to let off and let the wheels slow for grip, despite a car slithering towards me. At the last moment the tires bit and we moved out of the way of a Ford Escort going sideways! Sorry Mr Escort Driver!
Really great and informative review. I own a 1988 924S and I think it's one of the best cars Porsche ever produced - full stop. Still seriously underrated and one of the best 'momentum' cars yet made.
I had a 924 and 944s2 in the late '90s the 924 I bought for 4 thousand pounds it was low mileage and in great condition has zero problems in 4 years with that car. Later i bought the 944 s2 for 4200 ish British pounds plus my 924 thrown in, a bit more but has full-service history and a great deal of work done to improve the car and several new parts in the troubled area. The 944s2 was leaps ahead compared to the 924. Looking back the 924 was a basic car in and out, especially inside but my first sports car so I loved it and it was fast enough for the time and my age. 944s2 was a different animal better interior by miles, much much faster, better ride and leaps ahead in fit and finishing. A great car for the money and a big step up from the 924 and before that I had Peugeot 405 1.9 litre 16v which was fast but didn't have any character and was forgetful but was a much better daily.
Oddly I'm looking back at these due to owning a current Subaru BRZ, and wondering about these. Thanks for taking the time to share your ownership and driving experience.
Nice video. Love my 83’ Porsche 944, but lotsa respect for your car. Nicely narrated, informational, kept me interested. If you ever want to sell her…. We’d welcome her to our stable.
There was a nice red 87 one a few hrs away with 109k for $2000. I kinda regret not checking it out. I already have a nice 92 16v GTI to maintain… but I’d dug an 88 924S. Nice review.
I got one over here in germany with the exact same color. I had to search for it really long, though. Love it. As far as I know, it has no power steering, btw. Great review, enjoyed it very much!
Nice car. I've had a '78 and an '82. The original 924 design is beautifully simple. The 944 did improve on the interior, though (after the first couple of years).
My dad got an 88 924s just like this brand new. Only difference I see between yours and his is that ours has a black interior. Same manual, sport seats, maraschino red, etc. But it hasn't moved in 15+ years.
Sadly, I just found one in a junkyard. Got the tach from it since I have an '84 944, so hoping to get some more parts. Didn't know it had a higher compression.
Really nice overview and driving footage! The performance upgrades on the 1988 engines are definitely nice to have, but the torque curve still drops out pretty quickly after 5,500rpm… losing about 30 pound-feet between there and 6,000rpm.
I just sold mine😪. It needed a bit of work, . I didn't want to take the time to learn, nor pay for it to be done. They are very aerodynamic and classic design . I think prices will go up...
Had a 1987 924S for two years before being totalled by an 18 wheeler on a snowy interstate. I walked away from the accident unharmed and I’m convinced that was due to the quality of the car. Still miss it. One thing you don’t mention, though - the low bottom rim of the stock steering wheel, making entry and exit a hassle. If your aftermarket steering wheel is smaller, maybe that solves the problem.
Here in Australia, dad had a 924 Turbo in the early 80s. Every now and then I get the urge to buy a 968CS, which to me is the ultimate development of the 924 platform. Price wise though, they’re just always out of reach…
So, how reliable has it been for you? What’s the schedule for the timing belt? Does it need a valve job like the BMW 2.5 every 5000 miles? There’s a ‘87 924S I’m looking at with 57k miles. Looks pristine. Thanks. Great review!
Not sure why people always own this car only for a few years. I have mine for the last 18 years, been driving it daily. Its now 35 and will last for another age to come. Great cars. Just your american version has really ugly looking fenders, my euro version looks much better. Mine has around 200 hp nowadays. Love the car. Have a racing exhaust on it that just screams at you.
@@schrockahasi Well somewhere in the past they stole a 944s, probably later edition with the 187hp 2.5l engine and put everything on a legid crashed chassis, 924s. You can still see the nose of mine isnt that straight, well at least i can see it, others dont. They did that a lot in the past with stolen cars here in europe. Owner before me let it get chiptuned. Then race exhaust helps a bit, stripping weight, quick shifter, race clutch, etc. Can't go past 200hp though, mine eats its drive shafts and tires like crazy. Im the 13th owner, German papers show the 7th was in poland who probably fixed it up with this engine.
Congrats to this rare purchase. Great color and outstanding options. I bought a 924s ´bout 10yrs ago, from first hand. I really like the 924, but i think the 924S isn´t the most purest one, that one would go to the 924 for it not having ABS and power steering, also no kat and less weight. But also less Power.

Transaxle Porsches are fantastic
I've had 6 in my lifetime, all models 924 924S 944 early and late and a 968...there is just something about them!
I am also a nut for them..and agree ....I got 'the bug' as a 15 yr old in 1982 and have owned x13 to date.

Very nice! Definitely an under appreciated classic Porsche that just seems to get better looking with time thanks to its simple, sporty lines.
Just bought an 88 924S with the sport seat option and more. Guards red. 16 inch polished wheels. Very happy. Also have a 77 Championship Edition.
We own an 87 924s . Parents bought it new in 87 and my brother and I have since taken care of it . Garage kept it's entire life. Great sports car. Had to replace fuel sender and a couple parts fuel related but still runs smooth..

I love the way the 924 Turbo looks. It’s my personal favorite of the transaxle cars
Yep, the 924 Turbo is a good looking car.

A few date and number anomalies but a great film. 924S is superb
Thanks for watching!
Agree the 924S is a very good sportscar in a way that is missing in the modern world.
Sooo true !!! Good comment....

Enjoyed seeing New Mexico again and the 924S. Keep the videos coming!
More to come!
Great choice of car, well done! I used to own a 1987 924S for a couple years. It's great that you have the even rarer 1988 version with 158HP.
this car does not have the 158 hp engine, only the special edition 924se had that

Used to have a 1981 924 Turbo here in Europe, loved it, the 924S is really fun to drive & due to the narrow body it’s actually faster than the 944.
Love these cars, i have a similar one 1985.5 NA 944, just sublime between 4-6.7K rpm just marvellous.
Thanks for that. I looking at one to purchase and you made me feel easier about the car.
This car still looks great. 2022 and it looks good. It holds its age very well.

I agree about the maintenance. They are expensive if you pay someone to work on it, which is why I work on my car myself.

Loved my 924. You could "race" through the gears and not be over the speed limit.
yeah and left for dead by a nissan people carrier toeing a caravan
How is the part availability? I’m considering getting one as first car. What do you think?
Parts availability is very good for 944/924/968s. Pelican Parts, 944 Online and Only 944 are good places to find parts.

the engine in fact was derived from an old chrysler engine
It licensed the balance shaft tech from Mitsubishi, who were being imported by Chrysler at the time. Is that what you're talking about?
