Once they engineer away all of the flaws, go through countless hours of r & d, sleepless nights perfecting blueprints and dimensions, they’ll end up with their perfected ice genie: a dollar store ice tray.
Yeah! I can actually see myself using this. I think if you put the ice directly from the device right into the blue center piece it won't stick together as much if at all, as in this case it was allowed to melt a little bit. The hemispheres are a nice size and shape and I don't like the larger cubes so this actually seems like it could be decent now. Large ice trays, while taking up less room due to stacking, take up more room overall whereas I could just stick this one container in my freezer and not worry about it being awkward since I don't really need more than one. I think for a single person or a couple, it would be great. I also just love gadgets though, so if you're more about convenience it's not great, but personally I'd consider getting one now.
Frying ice cream works pretty reliable. The idea is fast caramelization accomplished by short contact with very high temperatures, so the core actually stays frozen in most recipes. As you might have guessed, that only works with very high sugar products like, well, most ice cream.
Honestly, the Ice Genie can't be improved, it just needs to be reinvented... or perhaps un-invented. There's literally no use for its inferior design at all when you can get normal ice cube trays.
@@justincarawan-carawanco.pu1639 Indeed, was about to make some smart comment that "you could fill the centre of the ice-genie with your made lumps, and then start a new batch on the outside. Half maker-half storage - but then as you say, much denser/easier to just stack some icecube trays. I must be missing something.. I must.. I mean they bothered to new-and-improve it..
I disagree, part of me likes the idea of a cylinder rather than an open tray. Its about the footprint. Since I keep my freezer full, its hard sometimes to make a whole 3x12 patch of level freezer space. For me that would be the only benefit and reason for it to exist.
I am impressed that they seemed to look at feedback and work on the issues. You can tell someone is trying to make this work. Changing the center to a cup to hold ice is a good thought. Still work to do but I’m rooting for them since they are working on it. I have higher hopes for version 3.
Changing the center to a cup was a great idea, but I’m sure that’s why he had a harder time getting it out. It actually had ice in the sides and not in a block at the bottom 🤣
Honestly, my favorite ice try is a normal silicone ice try, one I got makes really good sized cubes, easy to clean, doesnt take much space. Sometimes things dont need to be completely overhauled.
When i saw the ice puck that formed my first thought was “wouldn’t having a bottom to the inner chamber stop that from happening?” It was nice to be validated by the redesign lol
It's less about the cylinder being more effective than stacking trays, and more about having the bin and tray in one single unit. If you crack ice trays into a bin (or zipper bag like I do), it DOES save room to have them in one unit. I'm not saying that this is a good design as it stands, it's not. But if they address the design flaws, it might be useful. The new version IS a great improvement over the old one.
@@juliebaker6969 - I guess the issue with the overall design and yield of the ice genie, is you have to make multiple batches just to have enough ice on hand, and considering the height of the ice genie you could stack multiple ice trays that have far more yield of ice.
Another good presentation, saves peeps from wasting money or the hassle of returning an item. It appears you have a background in selling. You give great presentations and I appreciate it. Good day!
I actually like the new one. I’ve had it for a little while now. I’ve never had the issue with the ice sticking together like you did. I think maybe you had that issue because you had the ice cubes out for a while before you put them back in the freezer and the they were wet from melting? You should try it again but don’t let the cubes sit out . Refill it right away and try it 🙂
I love how no matter how crappy the item he is testing he tested in every way and gives it every benefit of the doubt and is always polite and tries to like everything. But I think one of the best mic drops I've ever seen is when he flips that ice tray over and smacks down all that ice laying there nice and neat. To me that was a challenge to every company that has any kind of an idea for making ice cubes. Will they accept the challenge?
True, but it's also a real world scenario, whenever you take ice out of the freezer even for 30 seconds or a minute it will cause a minute amount of melting and the refreeze will stick them together
The Ice Genie is what brought me to your channel. I saw the commercial said "I wonder if it works?" I googled. Your video popped up and I've been a fan ever since!!
Well as for the ice sticking together, that has more to do with it melting on the plate before storing it back. The water between the cubes fused. I don't think thats a design flaw of the product, more about how the ice was handled in-between popping out and storing back into the freezer.
I bought I silicone ice tray at Walmart for about $6. The cover has a seal which allows the ice cube tray to be placed in at angles, for full freezers, and the silicone allows you to remove or fill one cube at a time. For me it works perfectly, because I do not need multiple trays and do not have to worry if the tray is level.

And they should double down again on the size of the side ice chambers.

Reading instructions is important and you are the only one I have seen that follows that concept. Thanks again.
Just playing devils advocate here, You did take a little longer than someone would normally take to free the cubes return them to freezer so the sticking together might of been exacerbate . The Ice genie MK2 does potentially hold 96 cubes in a fairly compact item which isn't bad if you have limited freezer space.
My original ice genie came w/ an inner cylinder. I use it all of the time because I don't use ice a lot. It only takes an hour to make the ice. To break the initial seal, I just lean on the whole thing against the counter. It's just enough ice for my 1 glass of beverage. Sometimes I'll make more than 1 batch and the ice stores nicely in the center cylinder. I don't seem to have the problems you show. The shape is great in my freezer because it's more compact than oblong ice trays that you can't put stuff on top of.
I bought the original ice genie & found it to be difficult as you did. But, I use it daily as an ice bucket & love it. Yes, the ice cubes I put in it do stick together but because it is silicone I can roll it across the counter, apply a little pressure & the ice separates easily.
The new design allows for you to pour warm water inside the blue cup to help it break loose if you don't store the already made ice inside. But why? For any of them, why? It poorly solves a problem that absolutely nobody had. At least it makes for great reviews by my favorite "As Seen On TV" reviewer. Great video as always!
Put the water in first, then the center piece. It will overflow, but you don't have to mess with trying to pour it into the tiny crevasse and it will only overflow until you get down how much liquid you can put in.
The only design flaw I've ever seen with a dollar-store ice cube tray is that they don't have lids. That can be solved by plastic wrap or tinfoil. If they sold an ice cube tray for $2 with a lid that snapped closed, I'd buy it.
In Finland we use ice cube bags. Which are clear palstic bags that have a inside shaped like ice cubes. These are one time use and you throw them out after usage. You can tie those to a knot and it will never overflow. Unless of course there is a hole in the bag.
I've bought it.. But I discard the plastic container and pour water directly into the silicone until full. When it freezes I just hammer it away makes a lot and more abstract shape.
I think the reason the ice fused is it began to melt when you were filming so when you re froze it, they stuck together. If you did it quickly before the ice melted it wouldn't stick.
I got a couple of the original ones and that was a waste of $40. I’m glad you do these videos because I have started saving so much money. Thank you so much! I will stick to buying my ice or getting regular ice trays. I just wish they still made the metal ones we used to have when I was a kid those worked great!
No idea why they wouldnt make use of the massive gaping hole in the inner chamber, you could put another ice genie in there and nearly double your output
Rather than pop the ice cubes out, just pour your drink into the center cup for an ice-cold, UNDILUTED drink. Use a straw to drink from it, because if you drink from it like you would from a cup, the ice on the sides would have melted a bit and would leak.
On the new one, put the water in to cover 80% of the bottom ball, then put the bucket in and lid on. The bucket pushes the water up so you don’t have to try and pour it into the rim. Freeze. Smack it on the counter 3 times to loosen bucket. Works like a charm and is less messy than trays.
You can probably pour water into the main cup and then add the displacement insert to make the process easier and less mess-prone. That being said, I'm going to stick with my low profile ice trays.
I have the original and in order to avoid the hockey puck you have to turn it over and seal the inner chamber from the bottom. There’s a groove it sits in and the best way to make sure it’s pushed all the way in is upside down
My cubes get freezer burnt if I forget to bag them and you can crack the trays pretty easily and if you don't get a rubber bottomed one the ice can get stuck a lot of products dont need to be remade but we have a butter slicer a butter stick a butter shredder when we already have a butter knife

i like the first one, i use it a lot for my bong. since the cubes were small they'd fit easy in them, most ice cube trays make big pieces of ice so i like that the ice genie made plenty of ice.
It seems to me this ice genie is better for spaces that have chest freezers or places where a flat position ice cube tray is not useable. But the new one is a vast improvement from the old.
Best ice tray I've found is a silicone square one I picked up from Walmart for ten bucks. Make eight giant inch cubes. Easy to remove just push from the bottom. Only need like one or two cubes per cup. I use one of the coldest water bottles so my ice lasts all day and night.
First thing I thought when I saw the new one was making ice cream in it. Put milk and blended fruit (or chocolate) in the main chamber and salt in the smaller one, put the lid on and shake it. Maybe it would work, maybe not, but if you can get the milk to get cold enough (shaking it or rolling it makes it so bigger ice crystals don't form which makes it smooth). If you get a smooth texture you can then put it in the freezer and have ice cream balls.
6:00 it seems as if you were supposed to flip the whole "ice cube tray" upside down before pushing down. This way the flexible part would flex allowing the cylinder to be pushed out from the bottom
i had an original one. everything you mentioned, it was a terrible joke. worst was how when making a second/third batch the warmth of unfrozen water would cause the inner ice cubes to melt. so glad you mentioned the coagulated mass of ice at the end because that was what i was wondering about. looks like the same design flaw. theres not enough insulation around that inner cup
I use my old aluminum 4qt pressure cooker and a deep freezer to make block ice. About a 24 hour turn around time for each block. Block ice lasts a whole lot longer than tiny ice cubes. You’ll need a ice pick.
Thank you for validating my terrible experience. I thought I was just misusing the thing or that mine was defective. Now the question is what the heck can I use this thing for
Dollar store one is the best but sometimes I had problem with it being plastic and breaking so I bought 2 dollars one (!!!) with silicone at bottom of cups to pust cubes out and its fantastic, doesnt break and its easy to use.
I have two different ice cube trays. The OG dollar store one and 3 square-ish silicone ones that make perfectly shaped cubes of ice. The cubes are smaller and idk how much by volume it makes in comparison to the dollar store one, but they're small enough to fit in a small-mouthed water bottle and they're easy to get out. You bend the trays at each junction to loosen them up and crack any surface ice that formed, and then you can pop them out from underneath the tray using your finger. My only qualm with the silicone trays is that the plastic lids (like the ice genie) do not fit well on the silicone. They pop off and the plastic actually bends and warps because of the cold, but the lid isn't required for the trays to work and they do just enough work to protect the trays from sticking to each other when stacking, which I guess is the only purpose of the lids lol They're relatively cheap and you can find them on amazon in various different shapes, sizes, and colors.
The reason why its harder to squeeze seems to be the fact that the inner container now has a bottom so it no longer flexes as easily. I think they should have done the method of having a lip from the silicone in the bottom... similar to the disposable non-recyclable plastic drinking bottles.
Several years ago I went back to old school. Freeze a chunk of water and pull out my Ice Pick. It helps that I found an ice pick with a nice long pick. I can make my ice (chunks?) as big or as small as I like. Plus I feel like I get some sort of therapy from jabbing the ice block over and over lol.
Did you try the soapstone? Put stones in the drink sound is interesting but probably works. 20 years ago my classfriends went in Finnland and told me they are seen that stone what is perfect to make fireplace because long time can keep the temperature. The people used this property frosrty in the drinks as well. That time it was strange for me, today I seen in the webshops. I dont like the cold drinks but such a schame for the designers the old fashioned dollar store product is still the best.
yep, when I got the small cube genie it sucked, the bottom did just like that a big ice puck, so I sanded the three little tabs off, threw the lid away, now it works great for my use. Two fills last all week no problems with over filling it either since my hand fits inside, just make a fist pulls right out, and never an ice puck
I don't know what the problem Ice Genie want to solve, but the traditional tray works every time and almost all-refrigerator has ice cube maker(tray) on the freezer, then they have a huge bin to store then make again.
I think the first batch of ice fusing together in the new version is because of you demonstrating this for a video. By having it all sit out while filming and handling the ice to take it off of the plate the surface melted a lot more than it would if you just broke it loose and dumped it straight from the outer part into the inner sleeve and stuck it back in the freezer. That melted water on the surface is refreezing and making them stick together, but I don't think it would be as bad if it was put away quicker.
Definitely like the classic ice cube trays better. sure, you have that tiptoe walk from the sink to the freezer try not to spill your water. My freezer actually has a shelf in it that can hold three stacked Dollar store ice cube trays, and underneath it is a basin that you can empty the ice cubes into when you're done with them. It's kind of like a manual ice maker.
Once they engineer away all of the flaws, go through countless hours of r & d, sleepless nights perfecting blueprints and dimensions, they’ll end up with their perfected ice genie: a dollar store ice tray.

_ICE GENIE ARE YOU LISTENING??_
That's a damn good idea.
That's where you're meant to store excess ice cubes
Rather than pop the ice cubes out, just pour your drink into the center cup for an ice-cold, UNDILUTED drink. Use a straw to drink from it, because if you drink from it like you would from a cup, the ice on the sides would have melted a bit and would leak.
On the new one, put the water in to cover 80% of the bottom ball, then put the bucket in and lid on. The bucket pushes the water up so you don’t have to try and pour it into the rim. Freeze. Smack it on the counter 3 times to loosen bucket. Works like a charm and is less messy than trays.
Ice genie engineers watching this "my life's work! How dare you!"
No way anybody takes responsibility for this monstrosity
I bet there's no such thing as an "Ice genie engineer" . Honestly, no engineer would come up with such dumb idea 😂
@@FredericoLaydner lol prolly not
You can probably pour water into the main cup and then add the displacement insert to make the process easier and less mess-prone. That being said, I'm going to stick with my low profile ice trays.
Without even watching the video, I can tell the answer is still a "No"...
Well, it is technically better than the original, so the answer is yes. But it’s still a very bad product.
A polished turd.
I have the original and in order to avoid the hockey puck you have to turn it over and seal the inner chamber from the bottom. There’s a groove it sits in and the best way to make sure it’s pushed all the way in is upside down
Idk why they keep trying to improve on perfection. Since when did the original ice tray become bad? It's yet to fail me
My cubes get freezer burnt if I forget to bag them and you can crack the trays pretty easily and if you don't get a rubber bottomed one the ice can get stuck a lot of products dont need to be remade but we have a butter slicer a butter stick a butter shredder when we already have a butter knife
Yasss, sporting a Mars Volta T-shirt! Beto is a congressman here in Texas and was in that band. I always loved them!
PS: Does anyone else find his videos relaxing? I like to throw on a playlist of these reviews after work and decompress. So, thank you for that. 💙
I have arthritis in my hands. I would never be able to break those apart.
They’re gonna have a grip definitely or something to make it easier
well that stinks
Haven’t seen your videos in a year , feels good to be back
It’s winter, fill up some ice cube bags and leave them in a cooler outside
I've never watched a single video from this channel but I have literally been staring at my phone with full attention for this entire video
“INTERESTING TRIAD OF ICE CUBES” 😂 😂 😂
i like the first one, i use it a lot for my bong. since the cubes were small they'd fit easy in them, most ice cube trays make big pieces of ice so i like that the ice genie made plenty of ice.
If I need a lot of ice I’ll just buy a bag from the servo!
Tastes way better too.
Wtf is the servo?
@@reuploadify servo is a service station or garage. They all sell bags of ice.
I agree. Buy a bag of ice. Done! Took all of a minute.
Love your channel. Your reviewing of items sure helps everyone. Thank u sir. Stay safe n well, you too Bailey, n your son.
I do really injoy your videos & learn ALOT. 😀
It seems to me this ice genie is better for spaces that have chest freezers or places where a flat position ice cube tray is not useable. But the new one is a vast improvement from the old.
Last time I came this early I became a father
The Mars Volta shirt made my day! Best band in the world! ❤️
From what you show, the Dollar Store has nothing to worry about.
Best ice tray I've found is a silicone square one I picked up from Walmart for ten bucks. Make eight giant inch cubes. Easy to remove just push from the bottom. Only need like one or two cubes per cup. I use one of the coldest water bottles so my ice lasts all day and night.
The misuse of the word cube in this video is troubling.
They tried making something cheap and simple more expensive and complicated... so of course they will fail.
The ice genie video is actually one of my favorite videos on your channel.
Reminds me of that line from COD4 :
"It's not hard to improve on garbage."
6:00 it seems as if you were supposed to flip the whole "ice cube tray" upside down before pushing down. This way the flexible part would flex allowing the cylinder to be pushed out from the bottom
proof that your channel is helping gadgets improve if they want to
This makes me appreciate my old school plastic ice tray like never before!
i had an original one. everything you mentioned, it was a terrible joke. worst was how when making a second/third batch the warmth of unfrozen water would cause the inner ice cubes to melt. so glad you mentioned the coagulated mass of ice at the end because that was what i was wondering about. looks like the same design flaw. theres not enough insulation around that inner cup
I use my old aluminum 4qt pressure cooker and a deep freezer to make block ice. About a 24 hour turn around time for each block. Block ice lasts a whole lot longer than tiny ice cubes. You’ll need a ice pick.
Okay I've been watching for a while now and just saw the Mars Volta shirt you had on. Right on, man!
Thank you for validating my terrible experience. I thought I was just misusing the thing or that mine was defective. Now the question is what the heck can I use this thing for
The original Ice Genie video, was the first video of yours I've ever seen. Time sure flies!
The Mars Volta! Your shirt is the most impressive thing in this vid. Excellent review as usual. You're a kool guy.😊
My local Dollar store now sells ice cube trays with the soft bottoms, so even if you can't bend the tray you still have a better option for less.
Not once have I bought anything I've seen on this channel..but this is just so interesting to watch.
I bought silicone ice cube trays that have attached lids from Walmart. The ice cubes are huge and I highly recommend it
Did you try the soapstone?
The ice genie is nice since it takes up less horizontal space in the freezer. If you have a small freezer with only shelf maybe consider it
Definitely like the classic ice cube trays better. sure, you have that tiptoe walk from the sink to the freezer try not to spill your water. My freezer actually has a shelf in it that can hold three stacked Dollar store ice cube trays, and underneath it is a basin that you can empty the ice cubes into when you're done with them. It's kind of like a manual ice maker.
Dude, i laughed out loud with that clump of ice!! LOVE your reviews!!!
