- Back in 2009, Prince played a live cover of Jimmy Eat World's classic 'The Middle'. The band were aware it happened but had never actually heard the track...until now. Watch as Jim Adkins and Zach Lind react to the unearthed recording of Prince putting his own purple spin on the 'Bleed American' single.

I love a huge (eclectic) range of music but (my opinion) the only song to really pull off a near crying vocal is Prince's "When Doves Cry". (coming from a Led Zep, Van Halen, Robyn etc fan that can't stand Crybaby 90's boy bands)

My brain just exploded. I love this song and I love Prince so much.
Nice surprise to hear my late musical hero do this cover. But then again I can see how he dug that track since it was kinda reminiscent of Prince's early Power Pop/New Wave-style material a la "When You Were Mine", "Teacher Teacher" and the song he wrote for The Time called "After Hi School".

Yeah prince cut his teeth in new wave, It's not a leap for him to do pop punk.
The best complement a band can ever get is Weird Al Yankovic doing a parody of your song. But Prince comes a close second.

Reminds me of how the Foo Fighters played Darling Nikki on tour and Prince didn't like it, so to "get back" at them, Prince played Best of You at the Super Bowl.
Of course, the Foo Fighters were beyond psyched. The tit-for-tat didn't quite work.

I find Prince unlistenable, so I too would be crying if he ruined my song.
Glad you.learned something. People are entitled to their opinions. You think prince is good. I find no value in his music. If you read other comments some people agree with you and some agree with me. But we can come together and both cry over prince's version (with horrible audio) of one of Jimmy Eat World's worst songs.

They don’t seem like Prince fans. Fans would have been listening more carefully for that solo to come. They seemed mildly flattered but ready to move on and the interviewer who is an actual fan starts to scramble and skip to the solo wanting to impress them but he accidentally skips too far and passes it. So funny. Prince nerds relate to that interviewer. Lol

This is awesome but would have been so much better if you put the microphone up to the phone, or better yet post the actual recording. It sounds like there is different music loud in the background and you can barely hear the Prince recording.

@@TreyMessiah95I’m not. He’s super weird and cringey. From the weird way he dresses to his winery falsetto voice to his mediocre lyrics and Melodie’s. I’m not impressed at all. He’s a fruit cake. The one gold star I give him is that he can play like dozens of instruments, that’s pretty cool, although specializing in one instrument is even cooler.
Purple rain is a pretty lame song. There’s a reason you don’t hear it being played that often. It’s just not that good….

i LOVE BOTH BANDS. But i think im seeing something way different then other people .. To me They were way stoked to see what twist he put in the song.. Then when it gets going , to me , it looks like they were like expecting something more... I dont know like i said . Im just calling it like i see it..

I don’t think they weren’t overwhelmed or underwhelmed I think they are confused that he even covered the song in the first place. Like why our song? When prince did foo fighters the best of you. You can tell the foo fighters were completely excited and shocked and happy. I agree definitely not overwhelming excitement.

I just listened to this on tiktok, it's kind of a mess. Lol They probly rehearsed it like twice. But I was coming to say- The Middle has a similar, wholesome vibe as I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man. Similar tempo and straightforward beat. So I get why Prince liked it.
