Here's the real story, which is kind of ridiculous: it was shot using one of those huge rolling cameras that you'd normally see being used to tape the 6pm local news. A Georgia Tech student brought the camera and shot it - I think it came from Tech's student tv station. It wasn't a film camera - just standard-def Betacam - but still way better than almost anything else you could have gotten back then. (I vaguely recall a mic on top of the camera, but it must have been something relatively nice - I would have assumed that anything normal would have gotten blown out with the volume.)
also audio recorded to tape doesn't peak in the same way that digital audio does so even the parts of these that probably are peaking don't have that super harsh distortion on them like all the cell phone concerts people record now ua-cam.com/video/9dkyqZdOlpc/v-deo.htmlm23s
Connor Fin lol seriously... people make the most ridiculous hyperbolic statements in UA-cam comments when they're trying to play the "man, those were the days..." card.
I love this live version so much because of the intro guitar and how the music completely stops at 1:18. It's always so great when a live version sounds better
Amazing seeing this before its popularity...not hearing the crowd sing it to them yet...I wonder if they had any idea it would be the anthem it became (& is still) for so many :)
This was before the song had come out, and it was clear it was going to be their "next big song". People asked about it after the shows and on-line and were waiting for it to finally come out. it's a shame that the Bleed American version came with so much gloss compared to this.
this is like fucking amazing. they were so young and like so possessed! i cant imagine ever being there when they were still 'starting out' i mean nooooboody in that crowd sang it back lol. amazing uploads thank you so sosososo much
iread it was soooooo good. They had this song written for like 3 years before it came out on bleed American. I remember hearing it in 1999 in Boston and sending away for 7” records trying to find it. Then I got a copy of the clarity demo of it, which Is so much better than the over produced version on bleed American
This guys were ahead of their time for 1999 I remember the music of that year, 2002 another good year for me, Jimmy eat world is part of those good memories.
I heard this song on the Radio back in 1999-2000, Their first break out moderate hit at the time was Lucky Denver Mint. Sweetness got bigger with Their Break out Album Bleed American
I remember seeing them a couple times on this tour (Kansas City and Lawrence, both with No Knife, I think?) and this song hit me like a truck. I was completely in love with Clarity and just was blindsided by how perfect this song was at the moment. I'm still a little disappointed at how cleaned up the final recording of it ended up versus how raw and ragged this iteration was. So glad to see good documentation of the band at this point in their travels.
I am charmed out how unpolished (or mid) the engineering is here. The ringing guitar parts are chaotic, imprecise, and 100% live. And he sings his own refrains, which really should be a second singer. They sound here like a band you’d actually run into at that point in time.
Can you imagine this song on Clarity? Neither could the label, which is why it wasn't on it. So it made it onto Bleed American, only one of the best albums of the 2000s....for another label.
You probably already know, but the version of “Sweetness” on “Clarity Expanded Edition” sounds much more like this as opposed to the version that ended up on “Bleed American”. The version on Clarity is the first one I ever heard back in the day and will always be the one I like the best.
These guys were so far ahead of their time. In my opinion, Clarity is one of, maybe, two or three records that helped define emo. And not the b/s emo we think of today. I'm talking about the good stuff. ^^
one of the things that astonishes me is how made it with seemingly no gimicks like jumping on a hype train of a specific music genre at the time or something like having a charismatic front man that steals the spot light of the rest of the band. Anyways this Band's music has not aged one bit and the fact that they are still going strong after all these years is a testament to that.
So this is the third version of this song I heard! This version is damn good. I do really like the newest version too though the bass sounds deeper and the sound is fuller. This versions intro is fire 🔥
Thanks uglyredhonda for uploading these clips, good quality compared to what you would expect, always awesome seeing live clips from JEW back in Clarity era.
this version is much better as Tom Linton is playing his guitar instead of the piano - the guitar riffs in the middle and at the end sounds really great - I wish I could have a better version exactly with these guitar melody
He is playing the fuck outta that guitar and singing the shit outta that song.
couldn't have said it better myself.
Siri play me music created with 100% authenticity
Under rated comment
*authority
holy shit. this is how sweetness should sounds like. raw and unpolished
Check out the Clarity bonus track version/demo. It's a little closer to this
Funny how Jim is his own backing singer repeating himself
lol
He is always singing it himself ?
I just love him more for this ❤
@@sebastianruhland5198in most of their shows, either Tom or Rick does the backing vocals for this song as well as the harmonies during the chorus.
he's having so much fun singing this. imagine writing a song that you know is a banger and playing it live while its fresh
I would die for that experience, my life would be complete
and here I am in 2024.
Couldn’t even imagine being in that time rocking out. So epic. Jealous of all the people who lived it!
Recorded 18 years ago on most likely a film camera. Better audio than most live recorded shows today

You clearly haven't watched many modern fan made multicam videos then.

In 1999, my JVC audio equipment was top-notch, and that was lower-tier stuff. My JVC VHS player, still "magnifique".
I have a newfound love for this song
this the best song ever recorded...
I agree. This sound raw, the recorded version is kinda pop. This versions shows you it's a real raw song
These guys are wailing! 😭 it’s so raw, that intro is EVERYTHING!
I love this live version so much because of the intro guitar and how the music completely stops at 1:18. It's always so great when a live version sounds better
It's crazy how good they were at such a young age. Jimmy Eat World will always hold a special place in my heart/
Gordon Ramsay: add a teaspoon of Jimmy for Sweetness.
Also Gordon: Absolutely fucking phenomenal
Jim had such a fucking gift for writing melodies
Had?
Jim Adkins's stage presence is still as good as this 16 years on.
I've seen him play solo shows, too. Different feeling, but he definitely knows what he is doing.
Best performance i ever seen from this song, 2021 and still feeling fresh!
25 years now.
Jim still looks and sounds just as good today. His and his bands dedication shows.
Hands down best version of this song
ong
Reading 2011 version is great too
Amazing seeing this before its popularity...not hearing the crowd sing it to them yet...I wonder if they had any idea it would be the anthem it became (& is still) for so many :)

Sweetness is a perfect song
I wonder how different their careers would have been had this ended up on Clarity.
like this.
this sounds so much better live
this is like fucking amazing. they were so young and like so possessed! i cant imagine ever being there when they were still 'starting out' i mean nooooboody in that crowd sang it back lol. amazing uploads thank you so sosososo much

Saw this on Reddit months ago and loved it. Found the mother flicker by accident. Word. It's so much more likeable than the studio version.
Shouts out to r/emo
I was only a month old, when these guys played this live... crazy what goes on in this world when you're just doing nothing
Correction: When you weren't even born yet...

No wonder they through a party when Capitol dropped them. They knew what was coming.
"When you kiss me"
It's weird that they left that out of the album version, but played it live that way before and after the release.
Best part of any Jimmy Eat World song, ever. Only OG fans know that part!!!

0:11 idk why but i love that sound
what a performance!!!!!!
I listen to this when I'm depressed, it helps.
Watching in 2018.

so good. so sick back in 99. and yeah must of been a new song when they were playing it then. mental.

No way! Haha they didn’t realize the gold they had under their noses. 🤭
I will never stop being impressed with these guys❤️❤️
This video blows my mind every time
Jim singing and scratching like a mad man. LOVED IT!!!!
Jimmy Eat World is the last/true/genuine/American rock band.
Great song! Miss this kind of music
2:23 hits different 😭 i wish the guitars were played like that in the studio version

Their drummer did a good job here
I love that this video has been up since late 2008. This isn't just a video of the best vetsion of Sweetness, its a time capsule to better days.
THIS may be the most rock n roll thing in the last 3 decades.
These guys were so far ahead of their time. In my opinion, Clarity is one of, maybe, two or three records that helped define emo. And not the b/s emo we think of today. I'm talking about the good stuff. ^^
BROOO, just seeing them at their prime is amazing!!!
Goosebumps. I miss the old days, like A LOT
What a great vid. Thanks for the upload.
My favorite version of this song
will forever be the best recorded concert for me
Love this version🎉
i love jimmy eat world. So simple so good.
So happy i found this 🙏🏽
How can anyone down vote this? Heartless if you ask me.
emo we are ready for your return
I wish I could have seen this back then.
how can anyone not love this song
Ahh back when bootlegging a concert was a gentleman's pursuit. Before everybody uploaded 10 second videos from their iphone. :)

An iconic concert

I feel so fucking old; excellent upload.
Jeez louise...this rocks
This sounds SO GOOD!

🔥🔥🔥
Yes!
I will never get tired of this
Back when music was music
great! :) perfect 'last song' for a concert!
was an amazing tour.
so this live is before the song was released in the album? That is far fucking out, man!
its in the clarity album
thank god this video exists.
You can see this music. It looks like your youth.
absolutely amazing. Jim is truly the Man.
Big Props to Tom and Zach though as well.
Thanks uglyredhonda for uploading these clips, good quality compared to what you would expect, always awesome seeing live clips from JEW back in Clarity era.
Even better than studio version i think
Como amo esta presentación!!!
esta pasión por la música y por el rock ya se acabó hoy en día , no existe más
Aun existe, solo que la gente ya no le presta tanta atención como solía hacerlo antes
well...... fuck...... that was epic
On opening day for the braves on April 7th they played this song before the reds 6th inning turn.
I cant believe this is 1999. Damn Im OLD
I did not exist then :)
When you find out a song is 20 years old :0
Yep, this song existed for years before it was released as a single.
Such a good song
This is rock and roll
A band for 21 years
I can’t really sing but im trying to learn this lmao 💀💀💀
WOW!
Wow.
Right before the Thrashers started playing in Atlanta, funny how this song and the NHL are tied together
Hey siri, make me feel something
Instant adrenaline rush at the gym without caffeine consumed
tom, YEA
That Les Paul just got Jimmy’d
