  • What's up hobby friends. This week we need to talk about how easy it can be to just take conversions way too far. In my case, a Warhammer Age of Sigmar Khorgorath. I tried my best to dissect the reasons why this didn't go as planned and relay that information so that you may be potentially avoid my mistakes in the future! I do hope it helps :)

    I don't really see anything wrong with this conversion. Then again, I don't care about Khorne stuff at all so I don't know which visual elements this particulat daemon is supposed to have. But as a generic daemon it looks great.

    Personally, for me, it doesnt 'fit' as a khorgorath, but, it really feels like a chaos spawn. It looks kind of ridiculous, out of proportion and wildly mutated enough to really fit the lore but still gives off a raw violent vibe. I like it 👍

    Asimetrical, sphincter mouths and a lobster claw makes it look like a tzeenchian creation with a hint of slanesh. Might be worth shifting the way you think of it and using it a a proxy monster for something else. Looks rly cool though :)

  • @TMarlands
    @TMarlands 2 роки тому +49

    I think that you made a beautiful spawn aligned with Nurgle, or maybe Tzeentch. The issue might be the sphincter mouths? The Khorgorath has that enormous chest brand(?) of Khorne. Maybe this mini just needs to rep the team colours a bit more?
    Honestly though, it's gorgeous and works for me 100%.

      @RyanEdwardsVA 2 роки тому +5

      I agree - it works for me even as a Khorne thing because of how chaos spawn are, but I think it'd look even better in sickly greens. Those leech/maggot like mouths just scream Nurgle to me.

    The Khorgargant looks pretty cool to me. The only change I think I'd go for is bulking out the back of the head with some more fur, so the face blends more in to the shoulders.

    To me however, the conversion was sooo sick. I actually thought if I were an opposing player or a stormcast within the age of sigmar universe - what you did was literally the essence of Chaos.

    This is one of those things that literally drips with "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." If you like it, why does anything need to be changed? If you see the need to change something, why hesitate? While I enjoy watching you build, convert, & paint, I'm not in the field of tinkering with minis like you on this project, but I will say that the left arm looks like it's in an awkward position to me. Other than that, this thing is really cool & awkward left arm or not, it still looks good to me. LOL

    Honestly for me I like the overall changes. I like them, the only thing I feel throws off the miniature is the head, the lack of a focal point really throws your eyes off. But this also works as you have several other little conversions which draw your eye. Honestly it's part of our human nature as we understand what we expect. So we expect a face, with eyes and a mouth. When we don't have that it, Our minds find it hard to focus.

    I think you really nailed the big, roided out monster vibe. This feels like a great chaos spawn of Khorne and gives me some Borderlands vibes. There are some places where a splash of extra color might help. The claw on the carnifex crab hand getting the same bone coloration as the horns and nails. Bits of brass to pick out details on the salvaged armor and shields on the back. That would help make those sections pop. As far as the overall conversion? I dig it!

    To me, the biggest issue with your conversion is the face. Using a well known and recognizable terrain piece as a face is a pretty big hurdle to start with. It isn't helped by the poor detail of that spore thing. It's a great idea, but as it stands, the face is the least interesting part of the model.

    • @williambryant6175
      @williambryant6175 2 роки тому +2

      Agreed, especially when combined with the crushing claw on the double arm. I’m also not thrilled w/the double arm in general, and think it would’ve worked better w/just the regular arm, so you have the ‘that’s a whammer’ aspect he talked about prior to doing the double arm

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  2 роки тому +1

      The face is my biggest issue with it as well, I thought for sure that spore piece would work, but I just can't get passed it lol.

    • @chriswaight1460
      @chriswaight1460 2 роки тому +1

      This is exactly what I think too. The face doesn't work as a focal point. Then on the back it feels like you just stopped with the Armour when just a little extra detail in there would take it up 2 notches IMO

    I personally love it! But it is a piece of art, that is many people forget about the hobby is this a form of art. Art is subjective in many instances and what you find pleasing might different from others. I would love to have this model in my chaos army and I'm sure many others would too.

  • @raeishimura
    @raeishimura 2 роки тому +1

    It doesn't look bad to me, but I think that there are some points that could be improved on it. The pose doesn't really feel natural for a beast with a giant, oversized arm. Something where it is more dragging on the ground or hanging down to make it have a feeling of weight might be better. You can imagine something like this with that massive limb just heaving it around as it moves, hunched and sluggish as it drags it along.
    The other thing is probably the face. I like the idea of it, but the sucker mouth look still needs eyes to make it look like a face, and not just some fleshy boils on it's body. Just adding eyes I think might be enough to pull focus to it and make it a more effective face swap. Last thing, I'd probably blend the back with the face swap a little better. It's still a very abrupt divide there between the spawn piece and the models back, even where it seems like work was done to blend it. A few green stuff tentacles or some more fur to smooth that transition point would really go a long way.
    I think the idea is great, and it looks pretty good overall, but those things just really stood out to me as where you could maybe get this model to where you want it.

  • @Get_Splooshed
    @Get_Splooshed 2 роки тому +1

    Honestly it’s just the head that throws it off for me, the tentacle collar that surrounds the butthole mouths is really the only thing that should change, maybe remove that and use some green stuff to blend it into the body, add some veins or muscle fibers and I think it would look pretty damn stellar, either way in my opinion everything else on it looks really good and fits pretty well together.

    I think all it really needs is a stronger focal point. The little tardigrade mouths are a fun idea but they don't grab the eye all that much as they are now. I think if you play around with the forms or colours a bit there to accentuate it, and maybe tweak the colours elsewhere to knock them back a bit, you should have something that really works

    In my opinion the head is where it goes wrong. Perhaps a larger head or two of some type would sell it more as a better kitbash. I would try a modified minotaur, bloodthirster or blood letter head or or two. Making it look like a smaller creature splitting away from the larger one hence the tiny arm.

    Looking at your conversion, I think the issue is that the bottom and big fist look Khorne, but the weird sucker head and crab claw go "Weird Cronenberg chaos", almost Tzeentch. Also with the paint job (and this is probably because it's an incomplete paint job) doesn't direct my eye towards anything.
    Personnaly, what I'd do with it is change the head. Those two suckers just don't work for me. I don't register it as a face.
    When I saw you place that big gargant arm, I thought this was it. I immediatly pictured that model as some sort of big angry mutant that barrels into enemies lines and sends people flying left and right. I think the arm is the best feature of the model.

    Thing with chaos is anything is possible, if you can find some old White Dwarfs, I mean old like issues 110-199 for some old school chaos conversions the weirder the better.
    Either play it as a chaos spawn or put some wings on it and play it as a demon Prince of Khorne.
    I preferred your first paint job more, but the Khorne scheme looks good as well.

    The arms can be cut off at the shoulder ball, elbow and wrist to re-shape the arms and at hip ankle and feet to reposition the sculpt. A 4000 adjustable speed Dremel with different cutting attachments is what I use to get away from omni posses. Can’t post pic responses here or I’d show you examples.

    Nice conversion and color scheme, though if I have to be totally honest, I think that it reminds me more of a chaos spawn than a khorgorath. I think it is the head funnily enough. To me the head really feels chaos spawn'y with the lack of eyes. I would maybe try with a skull from the citadel skull pack, where there are some nice beastmen skulls. Or maybe something like the head from the skulltaker or a flesh hound. Something that has a bit more character.

  • @krl10101
    @krl10101 2 роки тому +1

    I really enjoyed your color choices on this model and how the paint job turned out.
    To my mind, this model does a very good job of embracing the "chaotic spawn" monster look that still feels very combat effective (don't let that thing get the charge in) as opposed to pure warp spawn monster (most of the special effects in The Thing).
    Sounds like you weren't able to nail down the vision you had in your head. You have how many more models to make the attempt? I'm looking forward to those videos when you're ready to make them.
    Maybe use some of those old D100 mutation and Chaos gift tables GW did back in the day for inspiration?

  • @joshsocshift

    The scale of the hand throws me, but not as much as the face. I think with a more traditional demon head, the scale of the big arm wouldnt be as much of an issue.
    The head also seems more nurgle/tzeentch than khorne imo

  • @benhart6690
    @benhart6690 2 роки тому +1

    I feel like the back part is too busy and not chaosy enough. Also the colours for the model seem like a progression without enough points of contrast to make things stand out. Finally the composition is problematic to my eye as khorne models tend to be mutated but clean sharp lines , whereas this model has elements (muscular limbs and the crab claw) that would be better suited to a Slaanesh model thematically. Honestly the final result makes me think of an old metal Slaanesh demon prince I had.

    @larsickenroth7169 2 роки тому +1

    What sticks out to me are two things:
    1. Though it can be interesting to aesthetically alter a model, there needs to be a bit of story behind it. If it's just 'let's stick parts on it until it works', that can sporadically lead to good things, but generally it puts you in the weeds because you have no real way to judge if what you're doing meets your demands. So even a 'one sentence story' helps.
    2. When dealing with models in general: think of what it would look like moving. I know this might sound a bit odd, but this is what general modellers for all kinds of purposes and even professional canvas-painters also do. One trick that would also help here, is taking a picture and mirroring it. Instantly you will see what looks 'off' because your brain is not used to this perspective. If you're working on a specific thing too long, your brain creates a sort of mental image of it/a shortcut, and it'll be really hard to spot even the most obvious things that look off.
    For this specific conversion: the arm is way too weighty and big, and this is more to do with it's mass than length + the steel plating on it. If this thing 'unfreezes' from being a model, it'll tip right over. Now, you could imagine a creature that uses one arm to walk with, but then the center-mass of the body would be even smaller/less bulky. Now the arm and the body are about the same mass, which just looks strange. And imagine this thing walking using both its arms? Then the smaller one would be way to short to even put both hands on the ground for a sort of 'simian-stroll'.
    If the fore-arm of the longest one would have been shorter, this would have worked fine.

  • @polrua
    @polrua 2 роки тому

    As others have said, the main issue is the 'face'.
    Because it has a flat base, it looks unnatural against the torso. You could look at fixing this by sculpting some more tentacle mass for the face, or bulking up the fur, so it looks like it's emerging from a hump or hunch.
    Also, as others have said, the face doesn't really say 'Khorne'. If I think of Khorne, I think of something fierce and predatory, with sharp, tearing teeth designed to rend flesh and spill blood. The weird sphincter is certainly striking, but could be reworked as corrupt and gross (Nurgle), fleshy and gross (Slaanesh) or unknowable, alien and gross (Tzeentch).
    The colour scheme isn't helping either.
    The red and black are all rich, dark colour values, so a Khornate head would need yellow, predatory eyes or off-white teeth to up that contrast and draw the viewer's attention to it as a focal point.
    I kinda liked your original colour scheme, with the pink flesh-coloured body and the bluish-purplish face which would probably work well for Slaanesh or Tzeentch.
    Everything else is great. I think it's a good bit of kit-bashing, a very distinctive conversion and definitely VERY much in the Chaos spirit.

    The only change that really jumps out to me is cutting and reposing the big arm shoulder to elbow down and sideways and forward then elbow to fist coming back in and up but still forward to make it look like it's uppercutting something on it's scale or delivering a haymaker to send some human scale target flying.

  • @pedrobastos8132
    @pedrobastos8132 2 роки тому

    Yeah I think I know what you're talking about being "weird", especially considering it is supposed to be a Khorne model. I think it is too "deformed" to fit that khornate vibe, I mean, I always felt that Khorne models had an almost militaristic vibe to them, they often don't go that crazy with mutations, mostly falling down to the traditional christian demon aesthetic.
    With that said, this model could easily fall into the other three gods, especially Tzeentch and Slaneesh (I mean, it has two buttwholes for a face, that's definitely Slaneeshi, right?)
    But overall, the model ended up looking pretty cool, great job man!

    The good part about Chaos Daemons is they can be very grotesque and should be downright scary. That may look over the top but its very much in line with the likes of The Thing. Or anything you never want to see or what you would visualize what hell would look like. Im a mixed bag on things like for table top straight Warhammer okay make it more canon. But turn it into a D&D rules with Warhammer 40k. Which is very doable. Then sky is the limit with the dungeon master.

  • @ElNick09
    @ElNick09 2 роки тому

    I think overall its interesting and fun, but i really think with the oversized humanoid arm it needed a humanoid head, so that those two parts of the model are tied together, the viewers focus is pulled to that giant arm but it (for me anyway) feels like the eye just brushes over the weird toothy-mouth-face looking for the a humanoid face subconsciously. Without that face it feels less 'monster' and more 'thing'. I think monsters work best when they dont stray too far from 'character' into 'amorphous horror'. I'd actually be really curious to see what it would look like with two twisted/agonized humanoid heads super-imposed over the tooth-orfaces,so it looks like some humanoid thats horribly splitting into two beings, or maybe two humanoid monsters slowly, painfully merging together. Anyway, really fun video man! loved it.

    honestly, I dont know much about the Khorgorath or Khorn in general, but I will say that I think it works for me. Its the a crazy mess, but isnt that what Chaos armies are all about. But again, I dont know much about that army or its lore. I would say, you could use that in D&D as a frankenstiens monster type creature, but as for AOS I think that its kinda cool and would be an interesting model to put down on the table. Maybe you could explain it with some sort of mad scientist unit that experiments of humans, turning them in these creatures. Sometimes it goes horrible wrong, but the war must go on... I dont know, I am just spitballing...lol. Anyways, I enjoyed the video and hope that you figure out what works for you in the next one. Good luck and keep it up.

    Interesting video and I thought the model was very cool too. So I'm glad I watched it. But I wish it had a different title. Taking things too far and experiencing failure can be a valuable and important part of any learning process. The title discourages people from having first hand learning experiences. Otherwise, solid video!

    OK, I'm a fan of this channel and I don't mean this in any negative way, but the color scheme you've chosen for your original conversion (timestamp 3:03 for example) *really* accentuates the Khorgorath's butt crack XD

    The dinky little human arm really makes me disgusted in a wonderful way, like if I saw that on the table I'd HAVE to slay it just to deal with that little arm. Right away. So, I guess that because you evoked a visceral response with this model, I'd say you've done really well. Awesome.

    I dunno, I think if your goal was to make some weird, semi-coherent monstrosity, this does a pretty good job of it! I could see something like this being like a bigger, but not named, monster in a demonic army or such.
    I think you probably could have added more visual interest with the paintjob; I'd have maybe made it more of a mess of colors, to make it look like some weird amalgam of multiple creatures. Like make the humanoid arms actually human skin color, but keep the crab arm red; maybe make those mouths all slimy, etc. But all that would have taken a lot more time to do.

  • @Antheraws
    @Antheraws 2 роки тому

    I actually really like the way it turned out. The red looks good. I like the massive arm. I think it still is looking like/believable of the model it represents.
    Things I wonder are what it would look like with orange highlights or orange instead of red but. You really did a great job with the red so. I'd keep it.
    Oh! He reminds me of the executioner from res 5. Hood and axe just to see and for the lols.

    Maybe make the metal parts more rusty or grimy looking. They seem a bit shiny and bright to me. And I'm no necessarily sold on the red. Especially as one solid color. The crabby grabber claw might look better in more of an orange color up against the red. Like a mutation that looks like it sprouted from the body. But doesn't look like it's part of the body. The physical parts look great.

    Idea came to my mind, what if you add a green stuff big fat infected belly giving some weight to the bottom of the mini. Maybe continue the chain thing and wrap around holding the mass above ground :) Does deamon have critters living on them? Further - Maybe its a pregnat deamon mother caring for his spawn^^

    Kind of a silly suggestion, but what if you paint it as Tzeentch instead of Khorne? Tzeentch is more likely to have the outlandish mutations, so perhaps that perspective shift will be enough to make an unbalanced conversion more forgivable.

  • @morridyn
    @morridyn 2 роки тому

    The head looks too Nurgle and not enough Khorne. A huge fanged maw or skull with horns would have fit better. The crab claw is more Slaanesh, but not overly so when you add the small arm next to it. Also some armor plates chained or bolted into the flesh would add some detail, though for Khorne I usually like black metal with brass trim, possibly with scorch marks and glowing metal like the edges of the metal is super hot.

    Overall, I think the conversion is fine. Maybe rotating the strong arm down to where it's more a gorilla support arm (with the knuckles on the floor) might ground it a little more. Great work, bud :)

    Honestly if it had just kept the tiny human arm without theclaw, it would have been perfect, one tiny shrivelled one, but one overly gigantic arm... definitely falling more into Chaos Spawn territory but still a great model

    Sometimes, you just gotta kit bash and see where it takes you. I don't have near enough valid bits to do something this full on with, mind--I can do little swaps here and there but nothing quite this major. Looks pretty cool anyway in a icky hentai manner!

    To me, it feels a bit more like Tzeench than anything. The random body parts and sizes scream god of change or random chaos mutations. Other things that bother me is the large arm, mostly due to the relaxed pose of the hand. If it was out reaching, or holding something I feel like it'd be -way- better. Maybe put a sword or something in it? Or just reposition it so its not just pointed out and to the side. As a model, it looks fine in general, but aiming for something specific it does feel unfocused a bit.

    I think it turned out great! I would personally have chose a smaller arm - this one is damn big but I don´t think it´s -too- big for a warhammer army.
    The only cc I´d give is to try to incorporate the chain a bit more, either by having some green stuff under it so it can visible dig into the skin, or my painting over it with some kind of texture paint to make it look like it´s been there for a long time. Or both.
    Great video!

    That's how models usually are when a starter set comes out. You can start off by picking up a lot of the models individually for next to nothing. If it's limited edition, however, or the set is no longer sold cheaply, then the price rises.

    I think the biggest mistake was not sticking with the "big arm little arm" concept and adding that tyranid arm. The nid arm is too big for the big arm little arm concept but too small to balance the gargant arm. Even if it was, it would just make the model look like it has two disproportionately large arms for some reason, which would look more like a proportion mistake than a mutation. The little arm really sold the idea that "yes, this arm is too big for this model, but its supposed to be because thats how he was mutated" and gave it a kind of off balance balance.

    The only change I would suggest, literally the only one, to make it more cohesive, would be to make the tentacles around the face the same color as the hair, so it just looks like more hair and feels like a single unit instead of a head smacked onto the hair. Otherwise, I love it! It's somewhere between a Khorgorath and a Chaos Spawn, and it looks great.

  • @iHuntBearsWithMyFist

    I like the action pose he has, like hes about to strike. But imo this beast would get tired sometimes from raising his big grabber, and might just let it drag behind him picking up a few scrapes and dirt along the way. A good idea would be to show the dirt and weathering on the underside of the big arm. I know you make the terrain sorta consistent with the whole army so obviously it needs a home before slapping but directional rips and cuts would make him stand out

    I think making the small arm a bit more purple from the hand up would be a good detail, and supergluing the chain so it doesnt move around as well. Other than that this model works great, i love out of proportion limbs and the trilobyte mouth looks good. Maybe if it had some greenstuff'd blood and guts drooling from it itd work more, but thats just preference

    The huge difference in hand sizes is the thing that throws me off the most. If his big hand is 'correct' he feels relatively tiny, if his little hand is correct, he'd be huge. Now he's both at the same time. The longer arms and chaos spawn bits work for me. I could see just losing the gargant hand and swapping it for something a bit more to scale.

  • @doncoyote68

    That "head" just ruins the whole thing, especially being a Khorne model. You need a good bull head or something with tons of sharp teeth and big muscles not weird barnacles with lamprey mouths and tentacles. Khorne is all about being as strong as possible and as deadly as possible so that just doesn't fit.

    IMO the thing that makes it visually implausible is the leght of the arm, mor then the size. With that body and that arm the monster would be unable to lift the arm at that angle without toppling over. If you did cut the arm at the elbow and glue it in the shoulder it wuld look better. It is not just biologically weird... it is phisically inplausible.

  • @TheKillJoyRobot
    @TheKillJoyRobot 2 роки тому

    I think the head was a bit too far. The arms are a great visual mutation that makes it look bizarre and dangerous. The head is too much though - using that Khorne head you snipped from the bitz searching would have been something readily identifiable, along with the skin color, to tie it back to its Chaos roots.

    The only thing i don't like is the loose chain. I wish you added small drops of super glue so it would hang in place and not move with gravity. Seeing it wiggle around is super distracting. Otherwise its a great model and conversion and paint job.

    I had 3 of these beasts. the first one was build in his normal pose.
    The second one got his arms reposed and he got a elongated neck to change the direction of the head, was easier than i first tought.
    The thired one was changed into a deamonprince, with wings from an old fantasy ork wyvern + armswap with some leftover bits (right arm with a sword and left one with claws) and a head from the deamonprince kit.
    These conversions were really fun to make, but i think that's my thing. i love to convert models more than anything else.
