This turned out really well! I remember my first Space Marine, it was also yellow. I was 14 years old and wet blending was something unattainable only seen in White Dwarf 'eavy metal pages. The warm yellow works really well with these blues. Glad you went the extra mile with oils, I often neglect them too. In the end, this vid is stuffed with great thinking like think out of the box, getting out from your comfort zone and pin washing. Free tip. Don't put your oils over a palette but on a piece of kitchen paper: This way the disposal or remaining oil painting not transferred to the second palette is cleaner and easier BUT paper sucks part of the oil from the pigment so once thinned will dry a little faster. Cheers Alex, have a nice weekend!
Only to remind him of mortality you know - memento mori... 😂 At least he got to be a holy dead person and not just the regular kind. @@52Miniatures So sorry to know 😰 I watched the video, really liked it. The way you made the theme, the lore permeate thru your unique take on these stormcast is superb. How they are geared towards battle, madness driven cause the resurrection. Lovely painting! Very interesting to see you persist and experiment to get the result you're picturing in your head. I think that's a valuable lesson - there doesn't have to be a recipe for everything, you can work your way there.
Thank you 🙏Yes, it was a good “back to school” kind of a feeling. Problem solving. Utterly time consuming but I think it’s worth it every now and again. Just reboot the system a little.
Very good for a first! Love the paint scheme. Agree that moving away from box art painting allows the 'creative' side to come out of the modeller. I know people use either browns or purples to get the shadings.. I would of used brighter colours for the sword, overall WELL DONE
well the "receits"are called purity seals are used as a mark of honour and experience, it used to be in the 30th millenium that if you came back with it intact it meant you were a veteran and elite soldier since you were able to keep a piece of paper from being torn off in the middle of a battle, in the 41st millenium its like a mark of purity and a way to show the emperor's guidance and protection so usually the veterans and higher ranking marines get them and they can also be given as a representation of an amazing feat in combat
@@onyxtheemeraldknight8429 well the purity seals aren't only for space marines, anyone that does good enough can receive one, sisters of battle usually have them, but yeah, space marine lore is pretty interesting, like the one faction inside the custodes that has some sort of premonition ability, so they go and protect seemingly unimportant people knowing they will do a great deed or become an important figure in the future
I just painted a yellow space marine for the first time... and I'm pretty sure that there is no such thing as a 'yellow' space marine, only an orange one. p.s. Just, wow! what an amazing paint job you did.
I buy model space ships ships. Then one day I wanted to adjust some colors. Looked up painting, and came across this whole Warhammer model painting universe I had no idea about. Still no idea about the game itself, but the craftmanship on display is amazing.
This is an amazing video! Your color palette is off the chart and totally going to use the turquoise on the jet pack and power sword. I got so much inspiration to try on my mini's. 100% subscribing.
Thank you Will and welcome to the channel! There are things here I wish I would remember more often... I tried to paint some yellow recently and it just turned into a shambles :)
Another great video, really enjoyed watching you go through this and your thought process. And the Space marine look fantastic too. More inspiration for me to try new things, thanks.
So it's interesting that I found your channel today as I just did my first ever recess shade and edge highlight on a mini, basic stuff I know but I've only been painting for 6 months or so, and it came out really good and I learned a lot by getting out of my typical comfort zone.
Thanks for the inspiration. I previously used oil paints only for grim-dark-ish effects like streaking grime and such. Never seen them applied for "clean" shading and gradients. Great work!
Considering I thought this was the best imperial fist I could find, knowing I really struggled with yellow.. (I did give up on yellow as i was a beginner). It’d be interesting to see how you’d do a take of space wolves, blood angels etc. The naivety? Freshness or something I can’t express that you bring to the grim dark, is really something else. Thank you for giving a different guiding light.
@@52Miniatures Absolutely and I agree. I have chopped and changed painting different chapters, each set of colours brings a new challenge for me. I still think imperial fist yellow is one of the hardest colours to do, it’s on my back burner as a future project when I’ve become more proficient at painting. Ps, you also look like Darren Latham(he also had a channel), so I had to do a double take and at first, thought damn, is this his new channel incognito! Thanks Joe and welcome to the channel. Explaining that to UA-cam is very difficult :) so I’m glad you found your way over. Happy New Year!
@@52Miniatures appreciate that fully my dude, perhaps one of's, one model from each faction or something?....I dunno I like seeing different styles and approaches and enjoyed yours. Have lost a little enthusiasm for the hobby and this made me want to pick up a brush again.....I realise this is pure selfishness on my behalf haha ;)
interesting as usual! What I normally do with yellow (my infinity Yu Jing primarily) is white primer > pink base colour on the entire model > heavy zenithal white from the top > yellow ink all over da place > ice yellow panel highlining. Definition I achieve as a last step with enamel or oil wash. Pink + yellow gives a warm, rich orange shade that in my opinion looks great! Try it if u get the chance.
Thanks Federico. I'm only now starting to grasp the blending of colours on top of each other. I guess that comes more when working with inks. It's really smart. Pink / Magenta + Yellow = Orange.. I'm still a bit in the world of Orange = Orange... I should play around a bit more with inks in the airbrush, just to learn these things.
Amazing paint job! Love what it looks like in the end. On e thing you might try next time is to give it a magenta base coat with the airbrush and then layer yellow over it. What will happen is that the first coats are much darker brownish yellow and the more you add the brighter the yellow will become. Can help with getting a decent gradient in colour transitions.
@@52Miniatures Great, I'll check it out! I've not used Enamels or oils for years so it was a bit of a surprise.. they smell so bad (But work so well for washes and filters) ha ha - Cheers
Wow, I’m sooo happy I discovered your channel. You’re an inspiration and I love your naration and esspecially your humor! “Why this dude has his old receipts attached to his armor…” I had to pause the video at that moment! Haha
Brand new to the hobby and the army that I chose was Imperial Fists! (Exploding Sixes sounded too cool to pass up) I really enjoyed your video and would humbly offer a suggestion for your next step doing something uncomfortable. It would be very cool to see how you tackle the challenge of painting a vehicle for the first time!
I feel like (as boring as it may sound) a thorough review of (Renee) DeGa and particularly maybe Picasso (the early stuff with all the yellows) would really help in studying yellow and the appropriate effects; maybe more important is the way they went about observing objects in nature - put some yellow pears or pale oranges and a Tonka truck on a table in a room with 1 small window and no lights on, take some pictures and just kind of look at it from different angles. My opinion is that extreme lighting takes us to the edge of what color and shade can do, particularly because as the amount of light fades our ability to detect the color diminishes as the cones in the eye require a certain amount of saturation to 'turn on'
@@52Miniatures I expect you have a much stronger basis for all of this than me - I have more of a passing interest in a lot of the earlier western artists, but I am absolutely fascinated by high contrast lighting. There's an (Italian?) fellow that did an incredible video on the topic while comparing grasaille to works from Caravaggio
So...you could have painted him with acrylics orange....shade the orange with some red but not much...and highlight it with yellow....to the point it is now...amazing paintjob..and what you say its quite true

That's a good idea. That would bring the focus up towards the face and that. Thanks
"You know I am not realy comfortable with yeallows so I wanted to give it a try."
Proceeds with creating the best looking IF I have ever seen...
Well.. That's it for guys :D imma go paint sum orkz .. :D
Ha ha! "I'm not really comfortable with green.. so I wanted to give it a try". But seriously, thank you :)
So basically your dude lends you a hero model...and you paint him dead and rotten hanging from a shield. What a friend you are! 😈
Really good results, love what you did to the mini. The warm yellow works really well with these blues.
Glad you went the extra mile with oils, I often neglect them too. In the end, this vid is stuffed with great thinking like think out of the box, getting out from your comfort zone and pin washing.
Free tip. Don't put your oils over a palette but on a piece of kitchen paper:
This way the disposal or remaining oil painting not transferred to the second palette is cleaner and easier BUT paper sucks part of the oil from the pigment so once thinned will dry a little faster.
Cheers Alex, have a nice weekend!
Only to remind him of mortality you know - memento mori... 😂 At least he got to be a holy dead person and not just the regular kind.
That is a very good tip with the paper, some of these oil paints are so very oily. Thanks. I’m glad I went the extra mile. Thinking of batching up on some “standard” batches. So that I more easily can just grab some oils and go.
Hope you are staying safe. Missed your comments on the last video and was a bit concerned, that everything was okay. Don’t think I’ll manage to get any more videos up before Christmas, so Merry Christmas! 🎄
@@52Miniatures So sorry to know 😰 I watched the video, really liked it. I mentally build my comment while watching BUT sadly I rescued an injured parrot a year ago and he thinks we are best pals so sticks to me hard enough to make me lose focus in virtually anything I try to do.
The way you made the theme, the lore permeate thru your unique take on these stormcast is superb. How they are geared towards battle, madness driven cause the resurrection. You made them more fearsome than the undead they fight against.
So that's it, real life is always in the middle of fun things.
Glad to know you and your fam are ok, I hope you have the best holidays one could have considering how the world have changed.
Hope 2021 will be even a better year for the channel, your high end quality videos well deserve it. Cheers! 👍
Next time you will tell me that you live on a ship, have an eyepatch and a wooden leg 😂 But no really, a best pall parrot sounds pretty cool if you ask me. I'm glad to hear that everything else is fine. And thanks, the army is going to be pretty fun when its all done. Just now taking a bit of a side step and working on a small squad of "rogues", that really don't want to be ninjas. Merry Christmas!
Holy shit, thats a gorgeous marine 😍
Thanks Dan!
This is one of my favorite painting videos I’ve seen in quite a while!! 👏
Glad to hear it Andrea, thank you.
Stunning!
Thank you K!
My goodness that is absolutely impressive.
Much appreciated Will, thank you!
Beautifully done! Your style and process are so unique! Fantastic!
Thank you M! I really appreciate it.
Very good for a first! Love the paint scheme. Agree that moving away from box art painting allows the 'creative' side to come out of the modeller. I know people use either browns or purples to get the shadings.. I would of used brighter colours for the sword, overall WELL DONE
Thank you W. It was a good challenge, and I learned a lot about yellow, especially after a lot of helpful comments as well.
That is a great looking figure, nice work.
Thanks C!
well the "receits"are called purity seals are used as a mark of honour and experience, it used to be in the 30th millenium that if you came back with it intact it meant you were a veteran and elite soldier since you were able to keep a piece of paper from being torn off in the middle of a battle, in the 41st millenium its like a mark of purity and a way to show the emperor's guidance and protection so usually the veterans and higher ranking marines get them and they can also be given as a representation of an amazing feat in combat
Thank you Eduardo. It definitely must be quite the feat to manage to keep them not ripped off during combat :)
I learn something thanks to you brother. And that is pretty badass by the way, starting to really like spacemarines lore
Hah! Yeah. But I mean. Orange is nice too. Thanks P!
I buy model space ships ships. Then one day I wanted to adjust some colors. Looked up painting, and came across this whole Warhammer model painting universe I had no idea about. Still no idea about the game itself, but the craftmanship on display is amazing.
Welcome to the dark side R! There is plenty of room :)
Excellent video, which asks quite interesting question! And paint job is quite amazing!👍
Thank you A! I appreciate it.
This video made me giggle. Thanks very much
My pleasure Warren :)
Try this. Paint the entire mini in pink and then paint the highlights in yellow. You get a really fun orange-yellow with minimal effort.
This turned out awesome! Amazing paint!
Thank you very much Terry!
Another great video, really enjoyed watching you go through this and your thought process. And the Space marine look fantastic too. More inspiration for me to try new things, thanks.
Glad to hear it B! Thank you :)
So it's interesting that I found your channel today as I just did my first ever recess shade and edge highlight on a mini, basic stuff I know but I've only been painting for 6 months or so, and it came out really good and I learned a lot by getting out of my typical comfort zone.
Right on Will, glad to hear it. Painting does not constantly have to be "pushing oneself", but it's a nice thing to do every now and again I think.
Excellent, went out on a limb for a small set of oils …… this will be fun
Nice to hear Rob, good luck.
Thanks for the inspiration. I previously used oil paints only for grim-dark-ish effects like streaking grime and such. Never seen them applied for "clean" shading and gradients. Great work!
Thanks O! Yeah, works great for this kind of stuff as well. I still feel like a beginner with oil paints, so looking forward to more experimenting.
Your voice is so relaxing and nice to listen to... Great video!
Thanks M :)
Yellow is the best colour for Space Marines! :p
It's pretty striking on the table. I like the "ice blue" variety a lot as well. The wolf ones :)
More not less of the 'mumbo jumbo talk' 👍 my favourite painting videos are the ones that include ideas for keeping things fresh
Well thank you. I think my issue is keeping the mumbo jumbo relatively relevant :) But it is sure to stay.
Amazing result.
Thank you Tim 🙏
Considering I thought this was the best imperial fist I could find, knowing I really struggled with yellow.. (I did give up on yellow as i was a beginner). It’d be interesting to see how you’d do a take of space wolves, blood angels etc. The naivety? Freshness or something I can’t express that you bring to the grim dark, is really something else. Thank you for giving a different guiding light.
I have been pondering it but not gotten to it :) it’s always good to have a few backup plans for rainy days.
Love your work, long may you find happiness, enjoyment and fulfilment in the hobby and showing us a different perspective.👍👍
So, just found your channel. Maybe because i manly focus on 40K. Im really glad that i did. The way you share your thoughts, explain why you did things, is nearly unique. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Joe and welcome to the channel. I am bit more of a fantasy buff but try and make videos that in essence are game / miniature agnostic... it’s the technique or “line of thought” that is important. Explaining that to UA-cam is very difficult :) so I’m glad you found your way over. Happy New Year!
You are welcome. I'm very excited for more. Happy new year.
great job on this one. Thanks for showing how the sausage was made
I think it’s good I didn’t show how it was actually made... that would probably have been some messy footage.
I love your videos. They are easily my favourite. I dont know whether its intentional but they make me laugh so much
Great to hear Chris, thank you.
clicked on the painting, liked for the cat xD
Ha ha! Fair enough :)
Dude this is awesome, I'd be really keen to see you paint more 40K, especially marines!
I’m sure it will come one day. At the moment I’m still to stuck in fantasy world :)
Phenomenal painting
Thank you humbly Chris
Smashing video. Excited to have been lead to this channel!
Thank you Kenny, and welcome 🙏 A bit of a break at the moment but new vids should be rolling out in a couple of weeks.
interesting as usual!
I should play around a bit more with inks in the airbrush, just to learn these things.
use a palette knife to mix oil paints, get a cleaner consistent paint. Also it won't ruin your brushes :) Wipe it clean with kitchen roll.
Thanks for the tip C!’
Thanks! Yeah, the magenta / pink tips have been rolling in. Seems like a very smart thing. If I ever do more, I'll have to give it a try.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍 enjoying your journey
Thank you 👍
Great job, the oils really added extra at the end! Learned a lot.. cheers
Thanks MM, glad to hear it. The oils are great. The extra step, but usually worth it.
@@52Miniatures I need to find a odourless thinner because its impossible to use oils/enamels without opening all the window ha ha - cheers
Windsor & Newton make one, not sure what it's called, but they definitely have one.
@@52Miniatures Great, I'll check it out! I've not used Enamels or oils for years so it was a bit of a surprise.. they smell so bad (But work so well for washes and filters) ha ha - Cheers
This looks absolutely amazing!!! Now I want to try the same overwhelming detailed miniature by myself.
🙏 & Go for it Niki. It’s a lot of small steps but once done, it’s pretty pleasing :)
Looks great! And I think you have sold me on oil paints for those oil washes! Cheers!
Thanks! It’s well worth a try Id say!
you bring an angle of enjoyable cinematography to this painting video niche and I really like it sir. Thank you
Thank you very much!
Looks great! 10/10 would make a place for that guy on my army list.
Thanks mate. I mean, just the chance to get a skeleton into ones Space Marine army is worth a lot :)
Wow, I’m sooo happy I discovered your channel. You’re an inspiration and I love your naration and esspecially your humor! “Why this dude has his old receipts attached to his armor…” I had to pause the video at that moment! Haha
Welcome to the channel S! I'm glad you like the videos :)
What an amazing paint job! Just jaw-dropingly awesome! Great quality video as well. You sir, should have a million subscribers!
Well thank you A, I very much appreciate it.
Welcome to the hobby C, nice to hear. Yeah, vehicle! That would be a challenge. Thanks for the tip!
@@52Miniatures Maybe an Impulsor (the space marine transport)? Totally don't have one sitting fully assembled in my hobby space... taunting me...
ha ha!
Es absolutamente impresionante, he visto esta mini pintada en muchos colores pero esta versión es posiblemente la que mas me gusta!
Grasias para los todos! or something along those lines...
Beautiful job!
Thanks Keith!
My opinion is that extreme lighting takes us to the edge of what color and shade can do, particularly because as the amount of light fades our ability to detect the color diminishes as the cones in the eye require a certain amount of saturation to 'turn on'
Thank you for the thoughts Ramirez
@@52Miniatures I expect you have a much stronger basis for all of this than me - I have more of a passing interest in a lot of the earlier western artists, but I am absolutely fascinated by high contrast lighting. There's an (Italian?) fellow that did an incredible video on the topic while comparing grasaille to works from Caravaggio
Very nice video! Thanks recommended. Commenting for the algorithm.
I and the algorithm likes you, thanks!
So...you could have painted him with acrylics orange....shade the orange with some red but not much...and highlight it with yellow....to the point it is now...amazing paintjob..and what you say its quite true
Thank you T, I appreciate it :)
