- I understand why this railroad doesn't like me but I've often wondered if most railroads feel the same way about other railfans or anyone recording video of trains.. I get reminded constantly about how much they don't like me.. Not my problem I guess, I try ignoring a lot of it.

i may have been harsh abt it but its a legit reason, and apologies for being an ass abt it. most crews hate railfans cuz theyre exhausted just to be greeted by pushy railfans that make stupid moves for views or "the golden shot". ive just grown tired of the stereotype and risky railfans ruining all the fun that it becomes an instinct to call out when i think theres a valid piece of evidence. its everywhere nowadays, especially in todays generation of railfanning. crews just wanna be left alone most times, and most railfans cant respect that. they have valid reasons to hate us, but its the railfans that ruin it for everyone. its become the mass majority, and its hard for crews not to fight that cuz of how many people do it

I was a train driver for over 40 years in the UK (now retired). We had a hardcore of railfans. A lot of the enthusiasts became friends with the drivers. They would contact us if they knew something unusual was happening, to find out how they could photograph it. There was always the odd one that was a pain. Standing to close or trespassing and questioning why you are not doing things how they have read it in a book .Not the regulars though. But we never disliked railfans. When I retired in 2021. One particular railfan (who went on to be a driver) was there on my last day. He had compiled a book of all the photographs he had of me over the years. The book had blank pages where all my colleagues wrote farewell messages. One of my treasured possessions and memories.
During my railroad career, never was bothered by rail fans. Much better than the rock throwers.
As a railroader, we get a lot of rail fans trespassing where they shouldn't be. Also, not everyone likes being filmed while they work or having their pictures taken.
I believe the RR employees reflect how they are treated by management. If they are treated fairly then they probably have no problem with rail fans. Bad treatment by management makes them surly and they take it out on the rail fans.
If you respect railroad property, chances are railroad crews will be less apprehensive about seeing you trackside. Unless you're dealing with Florida East Coast. I understand they have no problem calling the cops on a person for taking pictures of a train from public property. Things may have changed, though.
@@cris_261I have NEVER, not once had any issues with the FEC RR. I used to take video and stills of their trains all the time. Not once did any type of law enforcement ever give me any grief in doing so.
Those that get called on are either too close to their tracks, on their tracks or doing something that's either foolish, or looks suspicious.
I sometimes was lucky enough to actually talk to the FEC train crews. They really don't mind railfans as long as they are staying 100% off FCEN property and right of way.
@@icebiker3 You are right. With today's practices what they are thanks to precision scheduled railroading plus the personnel and hiring policies have created toxic work places. One comment about some Trainmaster saying crews don't like to be filmed. Well, look no further that the same Trainmaster(s) or safety team member that will video crews with the intent of getting something wrong or a rule violation on video to catch employees. They are out looking for the slightest little thing to write up an employee for.
Lil over 40 years ago on a Conrail line the high rail truck would switch to rail at a crossing by my grandmother's house and my brother and I would rush over to talk to him and he was very friendly. He also would ride in a caboose and would give us mineral water every time he saw us.
I am not much of a trainspotter but in my country railfans basically is what keeps the railroad afloat: most new engineers, conductors, machinists, maintenance workers etc, etc come from the hobby. Litteraly all trainspotters i know at some point started working for the railroad. And most still do!
I've met more than one E&LS worker who was downright Nasty ... BUT someone mentioned how a Baldwin Shark had it's Manufacturer Plate pryed off & stolen by Rail Fans ...
That would Sour me too !

@adp5R3x that happened back in the eighties, and it wasn't just the builder's plates. If I remember correctly, from a Trains article, parts and repair manuals were stolen. Also a person who was not a E&LS employee got injured on E&LS property, and sued the company. Ever since then, E&LS has been wary of railfans. Especially so at their headquarters where all their derelict locomotives are stored.
Problem is there are many railfans who get way too close to the trains when they’re coming by and trespass where they shouldn’t be. Just because your at a crossing and standing behind the crossbucks doesn’t mean your far enough away. I know many crew who have had way too many close calls and that creates stress and anxiety for them.

I work for UP, i dont despise railfans but ask yourself if you would like someone recording you, even when you are just there for the trains. The foamers (completely different thing than a railfan) will get outright butthurt if you do a job another way than their used to. They stand close to the tracks, they know everything and if they do happen to talk to you its always the worst time.
To put it another way, if you worked at the piggly wiggly and your job was to stock shelves imagine how annoying, over the course of a career, to have someone videotape you and critique you.
Seem to recall a railroad employee trying to get you arrested for being on that road. Claimed it belonged to them. Funny that the county maintains it if isn't theirs! My dad's name was Tom and he was a rr engineer and he always waved and honked at people! You just got a cranky one up there! Too bad he can't see how excited people are, especially kids, to get a wave from the train!
Never got arrested, much less a ticket.
Many railroaders see their job as just that, a job. They don't understand why railfans would want to take their picture over and over again. I've explained to many fellow employees that it's a hobby like any other. These fans are no different than the ones that lie on the hoods of their cars watching airplanes take off and land, or those that attend car shows. Personally, I love seeing railfans at trackside and always wave to them. If I'm stopped, I'll talk to them and have even brought some on board my engine to have a look.
Be real funny if Tom,was a fan of NASCAR,for example, and the NASCAR people,drivers, pit crew gave him a hard time and/or chased HIM away from the racetrack.
They need to understand that railfans aren’t there for the employees, they’re there for the trains!
@@rc391995 Who cares if someone records an employee doing their job? Some people like to record workers on purpose to see their reaction. It sounds like you are one of the people who call the cops and demand they use threats of violence to stop the recording. Are you afraid the camera will steal your soul?
They don't hate people who support them, they just don't know what peoples intentions are, the hard labor takes a toll on them, the shifts are long, some railroads are very corrupt, and extremely harsh on their employees, like BNSF. My dad has lots of friends who work for them, my great grandpa on my moms side worked for the BN from around 1904 to the late 1956, my family knows the roads well. My grandpa on my dads side helped trains get across the U.S/ CA border for BC Rail, if they were still around, oh the stories they could tell, also the crews have to watch out for people running the crossings, walking, or messing with the tracks/ property, but this specific road is different, it's the most hostile I've seen, you can literally feel the tension/ hostility while watching them go by, doing your job is one thing, then being straight up hostile for no reason is uncalled for, especially towards a person who has done nothing wrong, the road, and some of the crews started this multi year feud for no reason, someday they're going to do it to the wrong person, then will get sued, I'm not threatening, I'm just saying the unavoidable reality, the road brought this mess onto themselves, not the public, the crews lashing out, threatening the public is unacceptable, unprofessional, the specific employees who have done actions like I stated towards the public need to be fired, the fact that they haven't tells me the road is corrupt, the public is allowed to stand beside the public roads where there's crossings in order to film trains go by as long as they're not hostile, causing problems, or on railroad property. I saw the first video of when one of crews lashed out at Jason for filming while on public county property for no reason, and they have done it a few more times after that video was uploaded, this road needs to get a handle on their employees, before their employees do it to the wrong person, I'm only saying this, so this road hopefully pulls their heads out of their asses before it's too late, becuas it's just a matter of time. People who have made false police reports who do, or did do business with this road need to get sued for harassment, violating this man's rights, and making his life miserable for no reason.
@@rc391995 The railroad cannot close a crossing if they want, they have to make an agreement with the road agency and/or local government to do so. Otherwise some railroads would simply close every crossing in one day: _et voilà,_ no more train/automobile accidents!
The RR I work for is fairly friendly towards rail fans. Some of the guys call them foamers but I don’t. I just wave when I pass by them.
The old C&NW crews in the 1970s were pretty cool 😎 the Manitowoc/Green Bay runs were cool GP7s and 9s. GP30 & 35s... Engineer used to toss down the old train orders.

We had a local freight stopped in Brookville to shunt the lime mills, the crew was like family. then they switched to a yard crew who was distant especially with me after heading to town leaving their freight on the main. I about 8 taunted the breakman with the engineer laughing wildly. CN and NBSR crews are great.
Come on down to Folkston, GA. They love the railfans so much they built a park, an observation deck with restrooms and have a huge annual event.
We call them trainspotters in the U.K. and as a driver I’ve never had a problem with any of them. If anything I admire their passion for their hobby and they’re always polite in any interaction so I like them.
Seems like in the 2010s things got more militant in response to 9/11 but lately with PSR and bad management crews on the big roads care less about what we are doing mostly.

My dad used to be the safety guy for Soo line. Then he saw the shit. Quit. Became a legal consultant in Cases involving injury and death suits against railroads.
I've been taking train pictures for 45+ years, and I'd say that most rail workers couldn't care less about responsible railfans, both in this country and others. The vast majority just go about doing a professional job and not worrying about somebody standing trackside taking pictures. Some even go out of their way to help the railfans in certain cases, although that happening has become far less common in our current crazy society. And then there are some that just love to hate, and always need to have something to complain about, and worry about railfans instead of just doing their job. I've run into some real winners in this department (like an engineer coming out onto the platform to bitch at me at a public grade crossing), but it's all a "whatever" - them being unhappy in their own life is their own problem and not on me. The problem cases are far and few in between. Railroaders just seem like society in general, most are decent normal people, a few go above and beyond, and some are just head cases that need something to complain about. 🤔
I’m a retired Engineer and don’t hate railfan as long as they stay off the tracks. This railroad here looks like one of those rickety short lines with 10 mph track the whole route. Employees are probably not real happy workers with this kind of ownership and management.
They knew exactly what kind of RR it was before they started.

I've been a railfan all my life and when I worked for the SOO/CP, I saw a lot of them at our yard in St. Paul, MN (former Milw Road Pig's Eye Yard) and I just went about doing my job, no bid deal. I believe the reason so many RR workers don't like railfans is because those are the ones who have soured on their job due to perhaps something the RR did to them or they have a bad family life and want to take it out on someone. In all the decades of working many different jobs, I have to say that I've never seen so many workers wear their feelings on their sleeves as they do in the RR industry, and the ex-Milw Rd employees hated the Soo when they bought out the Milw Rd, which is understandable. I would have thought they'd be grateful to still have a job!!
I don’t know many people who like being watched at work unless you are a pro athlete or a stage performer. But, even then I bet a lot of them aren’t very friendly. All you can do is show respect and hopefully they show it in return. If not, it is what it is. Don’t take it personally.

I can't speak for this engineer or whatever personal conflict exists between you two, but I have no implicit distaste for rail fans. I enjoy doing a job that so many people find fascinating, including myself, which is why I applied for it in the first place. As long as rail enthusiasts respect the right of way and don't place themselves or the crews in harm's way, I say take all the photos you want.
I don't take photos, I shoot video.. I don't care who's working, no one wants to know or be concerned.

That wasn't my point, but rail fans taking photos, or videos, or using an etch-a-sketch, or a sketch pad, or painting on a canvas with an easel, or drawing in a fung-shui sand garden, or building train shaped sculptures out of clay...... whatever it is, I don't mind it for the aforementioned reasons. If you're not interfering with train operations I'm ok with it.

Railroad crews and the railroads operate under a tremendous number of layers of laws, rules and policies. Rail fans videotape and document their activities, equipment and infrastructure which then becomes subject to public critique. Think about someone going into your workspace and then videoing your activities and then posting it on UA-cam for the public to critique. I'm not saying policies shouldn't be followed, but the need to be perfect or having something which appears wrong can generate a lot of problems.
I remember there was a yard crew who said the policy was that they had to stop the locomotive before getting on it and off it and then they said, if they had to do that, they wouldn't be able to complete work. I also remember seeing a video of a track crew unloading rail from a car all scowling at the cameraman. Looking at what they were doing, I figured they would have normally just kicked the pile of rail off the flatcar onto the ground and that was that, but instead they went through the task of picking up each stick of rail with a little crane and placing it on the ground. Having to do things by the book means their work was substantially lengthened.
true but their work place is on a track cutting through everyone elses public roads and private property. so its a bit different. its not someone barging into someones office....their trains go by everyones local parks, towns and sometimes back yards. Also if their complaint is that a railfans presence makes them actually have to do their job correctly, that sounds a little off.
The layers of laws, rules and policies are the railroads’ own fault; either through negligence, stupidity or bad behavior on their part throughout their long history. They should be required to be cheerful to members of the public, simply because they won’t do anything if it’s not required of them! Reminds me of an old song written from the perspective of a hobo who dreams of a place where railroad employees are required to be friendly: “The brakemen have to tip their hats” (Big Rock Candy Mountain)
@@lewisdoherty7621 No body is capable of kicking even one length of rail off a flat car. A normal length of 136 lb rail weighs 1,768 lbs. They are usually unloaded with some type of crane. The number of pieces of rail per lift is dictated by the crane’s lifting ability.
@@billmorris2613 This was not a North American railway. I don't mean literally kicking it off the car with one's foot. The stakes are pulled from the pocket holes on the side of car for the dump. The rails are moved like we leverage rails into position with a pry bar and if there is a pile, they begin to slide off by gravity off the car. Any rails on the bottom can be leveraged to the edge and dropped or then moved with cranes. This is faster, but dangerous.
The county fixed the road, now the train company needs to do some track maintenance. That thing was rocking and rolling on the approach. Maybe the engineer is embarrassed, and doesn't want it documented, but it ain't his fault.
My local shortline engineer always says hi, and even sticks himself out the window to say "Happy 4th" for Independence Day. Also gives me locomotive tours from time to time.
In Australia we call them "skinny guards!' They replaced the guards vans that used to be on the end of the train.
What you call a guard van we call a caboose. Love the term “skinny guard,” LOL
I've encountered a few railroad workers that don't really care for railfans, but for the most part, they are cool with it down here in Eastern Ohio. I even had one engineer throw me a jaw breaker once, that doesn't really happen alot.

Breitung Township has done an awesome job fixing many of the road ways this year. They filled several larger pot holes around the area and now riding a bike on those roads (which I do) are so much smoother than before. Great work indeed.
I am a model railroader. When I lived in southern Wisconsin for a while we had several members from a local model railroad club that worked for the railroad. Many of them are railroad fans themself and not against others enjoying the railroad too.
I like how the train comes out of the grass. Very cool.
I'm thinking that the working conditions of the railroads don't allow for much to be happy about. When you get a wave from the engineer or a blast of the horn, you could consider yourself lucky and enjoy the spot. 😉
Sadly throughout your lifetime you get rivet counters. No matter which hobby you choose, there's always an armchair expert who knows everything better than you. My Dad was a loco engineer with B.R. right up to privatisation, and loved his job. Even now he goes to reunions to see his former colleagues for a drink and a chat, and now I am privileged to accompany him as I am now retired and get to hear some of their stories.😊

I was a career railroader with a few different RRs, all over the country. I was a signalman , maintainer, and then a conductor. Railfans never bothered me or my crew st all, out in the field, most were rather friendly and curious. The only thing that bothers me more is here on the internet. When they think they know more than a actual employee, especially over signals and how they work, or operating rules. I've worked around trains for 50 years. Some of the stuff the foamers post is just not true... even tho they have good intentions
Through the years I found most rail employees friendly, some indifferent, very few unpleasant. But like most of the comments, if you stay out of their way, give them space, and be respectful, you'll be fine. 😃👍🇺🇲

You should come to northern lower Michigan and chase the great lakes central railroad sometime there a pretty friendly crew when I catch them

You say you try to ignore it, but yet you still manage to bring it up every now and again. My gosh so many of railfans today feel like they are entitled to a wave or horn blast.
My guess is most of us are just trying to do our jobs. I don't see anything where I am required to be on the lookout for people waving and taking pictures. I'd much rather keep my eyes on the track ahead and my train which is what the railroad is paying me to do.
When F.R.E.D. was introduced to take the place of the caboose railroaders came up with a slightly more colorful name for the "F".

I think it is a mixed bag. If you on the side taking pictures and waving it is no issue. If you are getting onto the tracks and causing problems then you are going to get KILLED! I have been places and saw stupid people doing stupid crap and the crews cursing them!

When a profession/industry doesn’t encourage the next generation, that profession or industry will suffer by reducing the future labor pool. How do you think Railfans came to be? Probably because they were interested in trains as a kid. Maybe they stood line side with a parent as a big SD40 came roaring past in Run 8, and the engineer or fireman gave a friendly wave. Or maybe it was a conductor on a passenger train waving to a family standing on the station platform. Some of these railfans probably went on to work for the railroad, or a supporting industry, like R.J. Corman.
That being said, some of the train crew probably had a run-in with idiotic drivers trying to race the train to a grade crossing, or stopping their big rig on the tracks, or maybe an idiotic pedestrian or bicyclist trying to scooch through a stopped train because they were impatient, only to end up as bug squash when the train started moving again.
They call us FOAMERS, I worked for Southern Pacific and they said if you like trains, don't tell anyone, 😮

Conductors and Engineers are under no obligation to do anything but the job they are payed for. It is not hard to see which ones enjoy there job and which ones are there for a paycheck. Either situation is fine by me, I'm not there for them. Some truly hate railfans because they are filming and displaying evidence of a very few that are breaking rules. I'm not an expert so correct me if I'm wrong but a Placarded train car is not allowed to be next to a locomotive. Needs a buffer car?

Just my 2 cents worth. Most railfans that I see while I am on the job are in fact very respectful and responsible! There are sometimes I see someone filming us because they think we are doing something wrong. Like I don’t have any thing better to do than to block a road crossing!🙄

I never had a problem with anyone. If I had a the opportunity to speak to some I did. There was one location that was a common place to stop to meet the passenger train. Got to know several rail fans in that area.
A lot of railroad workers despise their job and anything that goes with it including railfans. I'll wear the badge of "foamer" proudly. When I was a kid in Milwaukee one of the local engineers switching the valley in 'Tosa would let us up in the cab for rides. His favorite engine, MILW Fairbanks-Morse 760 is now operable at IRM. I could run that engine in my sleep. Great video, thanks Jason.
I agree. Railroad workers hate their job. From their point of view, it's a dead end job they were forced into because they needed the money. These same people probably hate their co-workers, hate their boss, hate the company they work for and hate the USA.

The managers seeing rail fan videos and the potential for disciplinary action for the employee because of some minor rule infraction caught on those videos is why they’re not too fond of seeing you guys.
With over 51 years in railroad operations I would not say a lot of railroad workers dislike their jobs. We have very little turn over. And their dislike of railfans is due to the railfans actions.
I think it's like any other job, nobody likes being "watched" while working (except people who work in the entertainment industry). I don't know a single plumber, mechanic, dock worker or any other trade that wants to have someone watching.
Even some entertainers or athletes despise their audience. Which is pretty ironic. What you described is 100% accurate. I cannot figure out why people struggle to understand why railroad employees don’t like to be watch. Who does?
I don't mind someone watching me work just don't start telling how to do my job. 🤗

Adding to that is the railroad's zero tolerance policy. Bosses often hide in the weeds, looking to see if their train crews are following all company policies. Infractions don't have to be major to be punished severely. For instance, stepping on the head of a rail or using stairs without firmly grasping the handrail gets you fired on the spot.
I'm sure a film uploaded to social media would have the same effect. Nobody wants to lose their job because a foamer caught them on a bad day.

Absolutely true. I don't like being filmed while on a shunt. If the train consist is en route, that is fine.
As said above, everyone has an off day .. and being filmed increases the likelihood of being heavily penalised.
Which just confirms my thoughts, that mean employees simply reflect the poor company they work for. A quick glance at ELS tracks will tell you it’s not a well run company.

I worked in cable tv. there were co-workers that didn't care about TV and didn't like dealing with customers. It's the same with any business.
Some railfans are mindful of railroad safety and respect them. Those I never minded. Then there are those that do stupid unsafe things and say stupid shit.

One company I worked for called railfans (Frigging Rail Nuts, FRNs). They also concluded that I was an FRN.
I fail to comprehend the ignorance the crews display. Would they be a s rude as they are if a kid were filming? Simply no class. Well done Jason.
@@christopherescott6787 This is a good example of the way railfans believe. It’s not the crews that are ignorant. It’s the railfans that are ignorant for just believing they have the right to trespass on Railroad property to get the pictures they want. They place themselves in a very dangerous position. It’s very stressful on the crews to go by a railfan standing at the ballast line doing 30 to 110 MPH. Knowing with in a few seconds to a couple minutes this person could be dead because a metal tie down strap could cut them into two or three pieces or caught up and dragged across the ballast into ground meat.

Now do you understand my point and the stress we train crews have to indue from railfans who refuse to comply with command laws. And in the case of railroads it’s federal law. I wish law Inforcement would start arresting and taking them to trial.
Nice catch of ELS 502 with their 20 car consist. Its amazing how those guys are so miserable but it's their job and they need to accept that us railfans aren't going anywhere! But like they say "MISERY LOVES COMPANY" 😂
It’s just the new Generation of railroaders that just don’t like railfans or in they’re words “Foamers” since many have ruined it for them or one way or another. Not only that when railroaders see alot of dumb crap that people do out there they automatically categorize everyone as one.
Seen it out here in the southwest as a whole.
As much as I hate to say the days of friendly railroaders and the 90s era are gone. Crews used to be cool with the whole railroad photography back then and now they hate you with a passion the second you whip out a phone or Camera. *Not saying all crews are bad same with railroads since there’s still a few out there that are cool.
I think most railroad fans are respectable. They are only there to take fotos and not to instigate.

We are nice people.... The world around us has changed about how we go about our daily lives in this industry.
People in general are getting meaner! I used to be a nice guy, but the class one environment, and especially today’s PSR “railroading” seems to do a splendid job of training us to be complete &@$”! Seriously though, I do find MOST of the railfans to be respectful, and I respect them in return!

Friend who is now retired from the UP said the crews he worked with referred to railfans as FTN’s, f’n train nuts.

@@tomki6asp so am I but FTN’s are the ones that trespass and/ or put themselves in unsafe positions while observing or photographing railroad activity and equipment. To me foamers are the rest of us who just enjoy all things railroading.

Great video! It’s too bad some engineers that hate their jobs have to be rude to everyone they come across. Even if life sucks at times, there’s never a good reason to take it out on others

The railfans that employees like are the ones who stay off the property, and remain unseen and unheard.
I think a lot has to do with trespassing. The idiots who do give the rest a bad name.

Those are some funky tracks!! Nice catch. I never heard of ELS! I am lucky the engineers and conductors I know like me! They always wave, sound the horn and even say hi to me over the radio!

I'm a big railfan but rarely record anything. But I do from time to time if it's something unique. I can imagine the railroads get tired of always being on camera while they do their jobs. We have a similar issue with my FD. There is a person that follows us to our scenes and posts videos online of our operations. In most cases it's not a big deal but once in awhile you get tired of being recorded all the time.

I agree with one comment below, that piece of track is terrible. Looks like an emergency job to me.
Their dislike may be that they are afraid that you will catch them on film doing something wrong or infringing the rules in some way. Thirty years ago in Blackpool UK when I started photography of the (then) last remaining street tramway in England I was regarded with a great deal of suspicion for a while. Having said that, you have been filming for a long time now so it seems more personal. Ignore it.

Railfans aren’t interested in you the engineer driving the train, they’re interested in the locomotive itself.

One of the first of your videos I saw, you were talking about the railroad trying to kick you off that county road, claiming you were trespassing on railroad property. I didn’t think it looked too likely that it was railroad property as there was a public roadway there.
Anyway, my first impression on this video is, only in Michigan are roads so bad that people get excited when a gravel road gets some new gravel. Woohoo! Also, I’ve met plenty of friendly railroad people. It just seems like this one railroad has a bad company culture, and that spills over into their attitude toward the public.
I really miss the Caboose! The tracks going through my town were in such bad shape they couldn't do over 5 mph! The Caboose workers were always so kind to us little kids! Tooting off that little are whistle for us! Yep, I really miss the Caboose!
