There was once a time, before the internet, when people could vanish from your life forever and you relied on music like this to fill the void they left..
The first time I fell in love (and as I often think, the only time) was with the neighbors' friend when I was about nine or ten. One day, she suddenly vanished, and I pined for her for years upon years. Ages later, I found her on Facebook...engaged. That's one lucky dude in those pictures...

I’m 39 but most of my life I’ve always been the young person around everyone. Seems like I just blinked and now I’m grown yet still looking for fleeting memories of the past to remind me of what once was. I always had the feeling that I had forever to live, but after losing my father and other friends & family members is when I really started to reflect on my own mortality. Like smells, songs we hear can immediately take us back to a time that seemed easier. What I wouldn’t give to go back to the early 90’s and do it all over again; especially if I was able to know what I know now.
@Flying Turtle probably when somebody posted the video but this was a song from the 1990s then a classic dance mix reallllly made it well known round that same time and its just been an unforgettable song.

Before the internet, cell phones and social media, when you broke up with someone and you lost all contact with them, sometimes walking by their old address or places you both used to hang out at or having old photographs was the only way to remember and relive those memories. Sometimes people change their names or move to other countries and stay hidden or are lost forever. This is such a melancholic masterpiece of a song and a missive to lost love.
I have just read this and had to comment .What you have said is so true and actually very moving .As you suggest perhaps the " ships passing in the night" has disappeared .Anyway ,your comment was very thoughtful ,many thanks .
Once had a gf/lover that would just up and disappear... then pop up 5 months later in another state. Drove me bonkers and I begged her to not do that again. But she did. Although the last time, two years went by without a word. Found an obscure address on the internet and sent a note. Two says later a nice lawyer called and told me she had passed away due to early onset Alzheimers. That one will always hurt, but at least I know.
When I was 17 I dated a girl called Nicola. I loved her so much. I'd love to see her again just to see if life worked out well for her. I hope she's happy.
63 years old. I remember when this song came out. For me, it put into words how I felt about the people in my life that had passed away. I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain. Gone, but not forgotten. Love U Miss U, Soooo much See you on the other side someday Can't wait to see you again.
I worked at Sears when I was younger, and they would play this song over the store speakers sometimes. The rest of their playlist was terrible, as was the job, but discovering this song almost made working there worth it. I quit after a few months and moved on with my life-traveled, experienced the world, went through a heartbreak or two. A decade later, as I approach thirty, this song has started popping back into my head. I think back to my eighteen-year-old self folding clothes at the store, this song playing from the scratchy speakers in the ceiling, and I realize there's no way I could have really understood what this song was about at the time. I'm only just now beginning to understand. It resonates more and more as time goes on, and lately has begun to give me goosebumps each time I hear it. Thank you for the wonderful music, EBTG.
My club and bar hopping years. Smart phones weren't yet a thing, you found places to go by flyers being handed out or posted throughout the city. God!! I miss this era!!
I remember listening to this song shortly after my dad died. I was laying on the bed, it was Summer and I felt a sense of emptiness and longing. This song was like a caress in that moment.
Thank you for sharing such a deep moment in your life. I'm in my 50's and trust me growing up in the 70's into the 90's music was at its best. Hearing this brought me back in time. Remember hanging round the home of a girl I loved but broke up with 50 years ago , still listen to this masterpiece and all the old memories come flooding back !
This song came out very shortly after my wife died. Every time I go home and walk down Delmar in St Louis oh, I hear this song in the back of my head..... It's a Bittersweet memory that I'm not real sure if anyone would ever truly understand.
Your comment gives me chills. The pain I approach at the foot of the thoughts of losing my loved one is worthy of total breakdown. My hats off to you dude, much love!
There is something so haunting , sad and painful about this song.... When I listen to it the memories of loved ones and lovers gone forever fill my mind.... Life is so beautiful and Tragic at the same time....
Am I crying? Oh, yes. I had to take care of my brother’s apartment after he ended his life on 2/25/1999. He had over 300 CD’s and many from this group, that’s how I learned about the music. Every now and then I listen and my heart fills up with grief again, but it reminds me of him. I try to cope every day so music soothes my ravaged heart and hurting soul.
What a beautiful sentence to express grief “my ravaged heart and hurting soul” - you really express the feeling of grief and I can relate to it so much..❤
This is my dads favorite song to this day, and he doesn’t even know English. He always swears you can hear the emotion in her voice and that’s what makes the song powerful. 💕
I notice that with specific Japanese singers such as Jun Togawa. There is a lot of talented ones who fall through the gaps. Even those who were once big seem to not appear on the radio or get spoken about until they die which is sad.
I'd be honored if some EBTG fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of PRAYING FOR TIME and MOTHERS PRIDE on my YT channel in tribute to the great George Michael. George stated that Tracey Thorn was an important influence on him starting in the early 90s, and you can hear that influence on his masterpiece 1996 album Older and his later works. George and Tracey are 2 of the greatest vocalists ever, it's a shame they never collaborated on a song... thanks and peace.

Young love felt like this. More romantic and pure love. Old love is all wrapped up in material shit n money and where to go and what to do and how to go, who is your friend vs theirs. Lol real shit like Im crushed but feelings arent the half, kind of thing.
I just heard this the other day in Home Depot from all places. It put me right back into the 90ies, when I lived another life and on another continent. It filled me with this old desperation I have no reason to feel.....One of the best songs back then.
Tracey Thorn has a voice of gold. She and Ben Watts were/are the quintessential couple. They love their craft and seemingly each other. I “Miss” them. Great song, yet they reflect what many want. True love and respect for each other. Wish they would recreate that video.
2:24 A bold creative choice that has made this music so exceptional. Almost no melody, only meaningful words. What an experience to listen to this, even years and years after hearing It for the first time. I used to listen to this as a child, now I'm literally feeling this music.
This is one of those songs where I immediately transform back to where i first heard it. -Mid 90's on repeat on my CD walkman, while strolling through megamall, Manila Philippines.
This song’s memory brings a panicked sense of weight to my heart of a time now so long ago that slipped through my hands. Realizing as I listen this shadowy memory is dancing further out of focus.
Sade, Tracey and Annie Lennox are that smooth, emotional contra alto tipe of singers. They don't have to sing high notes at all to convey their feelings and to ilustrate depth of their songs.
I didn't say she wasn't beautiful, I was saying she ain't transgender, and rumours like that often start because someone isn't "conventionally" pretty. I remember when this came out, society had a lot to say about how she wasn't conventionally pretty, people had a LOT to say on the subject. It was stupid. That's why I said " whatever the hell that is!" Anyway, it's a great song, love coming back for a listen.
As someone who hasn't even existed in that era I find that so facinating. I discovered this song in 2019, so it reminds me of being 15, so I sorta have nostalgia for that "era", but that was 5 years ago and feels like it's been a lifetime, let alone to remembering this song coming out 30 years ago in 1994!
There is very subtle but burning sub bass synth that kicks in at 3:10 that I had never heard/appreciated in all these years. Listening to it now in 2022, I feel an inkling of dubstep or DnB just eeking below the surface of this song. It has opened a whole new dimension of appreciation for this masterpiece!
No me canso de escuchar, y sin duda marco un hito en la historia musical de mi generación; que hasta ahora la escuchamos. 👌🏻 Desde mi hermosa ciudad Quito, Ecuador 🇪🇨 disfruten!!
Nikki Nova It’s almost better that way. Sometimes you reach out to them and hoping they might respond they never respond. In a way sometimes it’s best to just let people that don’t matter to you go.
Yes that's so true. Also sad. Depending on how much you missed that person especially if was someone you were with and in love with for years. And still are and always will be. 😥
As a teenager I had a bitter sweet relationship with this song, I only imagined a lovers perspective and was utterly against being "hooked" for someone who refused to love you back. Now I an older and this song is about grieving it can be about anyone you love and it's gone, a parent, a grandparent, heck even a beloved pet!
Makes me think of my beautiful sister who passed away she was so pretty, my hero, my Baby girl, still Fucking hurts after 11 years, still can't breathe without her, life's but a short lived story, love your people, appreciate, and let them know♥️
2:24 This part of the song always gives me chills of nostalgia when I happen walk on long empty streets in the evening when it's dark outside and only street lamps are lighting up the way. It's captures that mood perfectly.
i do the same thing . i believe there are spiritual energies out there and that scene u described and this songs brings them all together harmoniously.
***I close my eyes while listening this song and in front of me instantly i see myself, as a 16 years old schoolgirl, yearning for fairytale lovestory, waiting for my exciting future life to happend, and with a big bag full of dreams in my hands. Isn't it amazing how JUST ONE SONG can put us on a time machine and at least for a 4 minutes and 5 seconds we can be a teenagers again..!!!!!??!
The most quintessential 90's song to me. Tracey Thorne's voice invokes such emotion that someone who has never had lost someone could feel the sadness of it through this song. Maybe the most special song to me out of all of them this one right here.
For me this has always been a song about longing…for things or beloved person lost that you can never get back no matter how much you look. Sometimes we know better to just let go but in the back of your mind you can’t help searching. That’s what this song always felt like to me.
I remember hearing this song at age 6 and it comes back into my subconscious every few years. 20 years later Im just now learning about this group and can see why this song was imbedded in my subconscious.
Tracy Thorne has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I simply don't understand how she never became a household name akin to Amy Winehouse. Amazing. I highly recommend their greatest hits collection. Many, many more gems to be found. Pax.
Unfortunately in our society talent doesn’t trump ugly. Tracey and Ben are not conventionally beautiful and thus couldn’t produce attractive videos or album covers. Just ask Christopher Cross.
Amy also sang a completely different genre. Often it's simply nothing more than that. After all, no one ever remembers Olivia Newton-John as a country singer; but everyone remembers her for pop, thanks to Grease.
All the tears shed then brought me to be the strong man I am today. Thanks for being there when you were..You helped mold me to be a better person I will always be grateful for you. God bless.
This song reminds me, with nostalgia, of the times when before leaving a person we thought about it a lot, because, from that moment, it would have been possible not to know anything about her or him. We weren't all on so-called "social". I have been back a couple of times to places where I have experienced important moments and it has not always been pleasant. The past is something that needs to be handled with care and is often best left alone.
Every now and again a song like this one comes along, that pulls you instantly out of the here and now, and thrusts you into a long forgotten moment in time. A moment that comes rushing back with startling clarity. The subtle nuances... the smell of her hair... the intoxicating melody of her laughter... the taste of her....
Listened to this track for about 6 hours straight driving overnight through a blizzard in Michigan once. Got "there" safely, and the time had slipped past in what seemed to have been only the blink of an eye thanks to EBTG that night. Good god but I'd get into a time machine and go back to those simpler, sweeter days without a moment's hesitation. Cheers, all.
There was once a time, before the internet, when people could vanish from your life forever and you relied on music like this to fill the void they left..
Yes, Just think that we all went out to play with our friends for the last time and non of us knew it.
That's good
Whoa

I don't know why but your comment gave me goosebumps
It’s scary how fast time flies. You just blink a few times and the song you love is three decades old.
Time goes by so fast we don’t even realize it
So true. Memories, sometimes nostalgia hits so hard.
Very true
I miss this era, back when life was easier simpler times

I've always loved this song since its release, but now it has new meaning since my husband passed away last year. He's gone, and I can't move on...
Bless your sweet heart.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I totally understand you and hope you could recover soon.
So sorry for your loss ❤ xxx
This isn’t just a song it’s a feeling. The saddest part about nostalgia is knowing your never going back
This hits hard..😳😭😭

Very true
Music is the closest thing to a time machine
Sad truth
"Can I confess? I've been hanging around your old address."
What a heartbreaking lyric.
Yup. I’ve been there. Void seemed endless.
Who went crazy for this when this came on the radio in the '90s ?
I kept a cassette tape in my boom box just so I could record it off radio
I could write an essay about how ridiculously underrated this track is. Simple yet haunting.
I absolutely agree on this. Absolutely.
Facts, and you should! It’s much needed, especially for this era.
I agree. But some people were falling in love with it - tout de suite
maybe you could write an essay on the meaning of "underrated", which this song certainly isn't. It was a huge hit back then, and is still playing on the radio.

This and "i dont wana talk about it."......love on ya tracy
One of the softest, silky smooth songs done in the 90's by a very beautiful woman.
@Geni Medina Yes I listen to "Smooth Operator" often. Not that I am one. Especially when I hammer stuff and smash my fingers 😀.
Sade, Tracey and Annie Lennox are that smooth, emotional contra alto tipe of singers. They don't have to sing high notes at all to convey their feelings and to ilustrate depth of their songs.
Yes, and great legs.
Sleek Stitch, that most certainly is just a rumour! She just isn't what is considered conventionally as "beautiful" whatever the hell that is!🤷♀️
I didn't say she wasn't beautiful, I was saying she ain't transgender, and rumours like that often start because someone isn't "conventionally" pretty. I remember when this came out, society had a lot to say about how she wasn't conventionally pretty, people had a LOT to say on the subject. It was stupid. That's why I said " whatever the hell that is!" Anyway, it's a great song, love coming back for a listen.
Incredible song. Lyrics are so deep for a 90's hit.
Tracey Thorn has a sweet powerful amazing voice that will sound good 50 yrs from now.
Wish she and Ben would cover 50's country songs.
It will never be like it was in the 90s. What a time...
La mejor época q vivimos está en nuestra mente. Nuestros corazones
💯.........The good days!!!
i was born in the mid 80s i love this song
As someone who hasn't even existed in that era I find that so facinating. I discovered this song in 2019, so it reminds me of being 15, so I sorta have nostalgia for that "era", but that was 5 years ago and feels like it's been a lifetime, let alone to remembering this song coming out 30 years ago in 1994!
God this brings back memories. I haven’t heard this song in twenty five years. I miss that time.
This song will always bring me back to a very difficult time. Good lessons learned then.
Saw them in concert at the Ogden in Denver years ago. Very great. Love their music!
Its so awesome !!!
Найкращий варіант зі всіх як на мене
I'm betting someone made a liquid funk remix of this, or melodic dubstep remix. :) Hopefully.
In the 90's if someone moved and you didn't have their info.. they were just gone forever
That happened to me in Co Durham in 1994 !! Ironic you wrote that years after, who are u ?? X
So sad and so real at the same time, it happened to me...
Nikki Nova lol facts
I was so attached to the person who showed me this song, and now is all memories... ironic and sad, but still love the song :(
.
Memory is the best remember that
Before, everything was so natural, simple and better than today. I really miss it
James Lima me too , this is real beauty.
So agree!!!! Everything is so complicated now....
Well, I send you a Simple hi!!!! From Uruguay. 🙋♀️🇺🇾
It really wasn't tho, but we went along, that's why nowadays we ultimately all feel it's a world of shit
@@NAIVADA I doubt it.
Lovely song & Lovely memories ❤
Back when I was younger and this song was one of my favorite songs. ( it still is )
The one and only !!! I always loved 'I miss you like the desert miss the rain' !! Thank you !
It's like visiting the house you grew up in after years and years away.......still expecting to see Mum!.
😢
Listening to this song after 20 years or so.. evokes so many memories and theres no closure.. guys I need closure 😭
Beautifully said!
Well said
@@CandyAndromeda hugs🫂 🤗 for you. Take care.
@@CandyAndromeda you look so beautiful and very sexy.
@@CandyAndromeda did you graduate from high school back in 2006?
This song brings a tear to my eyes. I really miss my childhood friends
Loddy is listening as long as I'm alive. This song has the perfect words for a situation I was in back in 1995. I love it!❤❤❤
Makes me think of my beautiful sister who passed away she was so pretty, my hero, my Baby girl, still Fucking hurts after 11 years, still can't breathe without her, life's but a short lived story, love your people, appreciate, and let them know♥️
Very sad to hear Mark....she lives in you and you can remember her and all the wonderful moments which will always be there with you
🙏
2:24 This part of the song always gives me chills of nostalgia when I happen walk on long empty streets in the evening when it's dark outside and only street lamps are lighting up the way. It's captures that mood perfectly.
i do the same thing . i believe there are spiritual energies out there and that scene u described and this songs brings them all together harmoniously.
It's akin to a praying to see someone again. Nostalgia, fantasies...
Yes, exactly 💯
It sums up every emotion I have about getting older and how life changes 😢
I so relate to this song, I miss you Babe, Dearly. I can’t believe it’s almost a year since you passed away. ❤❤❤
Sorry for your loss 💐
***I close my eyes while listening this song and in front of me instantly i see myself, as a 16 years old schoolgirl, yearning for fairytale lovestory, waiting for my exciting future life to happend, and with a big bag full of dreams in my hands. Isn't it amazing how JUST ONE SONG can put us on a time machine and at least for a 4 minutes and 5 seconds we can be a teenagers again..!!!!!??!
Well said.
Wow how cool....
❤❤❤ totally agree!
What a voice...amazing and so nostalgic for the 90's. The BEST!!
👍😘🌹💕👏🎼🎼
The most quintessential 90's song to me. Tracey Thorne's voice invokes such emotion that someone who has never had lost someone could feel the sadness of it through this song. Maybe the most special song to me out of all of them this one right here.
She is awesome 🎤love everything about this song 🎵 so very true & real
I used to listen to this song over and over again, back when it first came out.
It was easy to be addicted to the song.
For me this has always been a song about longing…for things or beloved person lost that you can never get back no matter how much you look. Sometimes we know better to just let go but in the back of your mind you can’t help searching. That’s what this song always felt like to me.
I fell in love with this version of this song when I heard this song and watched the video on The Box.
Jason Palacios omggggg The Box
the box. Was that instead of cable channels and u could pay to request songs? I vaguely remember something like that existing.
So did I 😀
Jason Palacios Yes. OMG
Timeless Song I love this track very emotional and awesome. Memories
I can not put it in words !!!
Pax.
Amy Winehouse had a familiar 1960’s pop sound that helped her.
Unfortunately in our society talent doesn’t trump ugly. Tracey and Ben are not conventionally beautiful and thus couldn’t produce attractive videos or album covers. Just ask Christopher Cross.
@@susandianasmith7150 The video has 7 million views. I think they're doing just fine.
@@SamStone1964 I don’t disagree. One hit wonders make plenty of money.
Amy also sang a completely different genre. Often it's simply nothing more than that.
After all, no one ever remembers Olivia Newton-John as a country singer; but everyone remembers her for pop, thanks to Grease.
What a great song flash back to the 90s
I remember this being on the radio all the time back in the 90's. Boy do I miss those days of good music!
Totally agree!
I have never forgotten about this song back in the day, when MTV was alive and kicking. The best of MTV music.
Reminds me of lost love from my youth. I remember walking past her old flat and wondering where she was in this world. I have no idea. I still wonder.
All the tears shed then brought me to be the strong man I am today. Thanks for being there when you were..You helped mold me to be a better person I will always be grateful for you. God bless.
so close to 2020 and still in❤with this song...

BRASIL - the best music!
Early morning. 2 am. Vh1 and MTV used play videos. Like this one. This was a perfect song and video for a melancholy teenager growing up in the 90's.
Those channels are garbage today
Im 46, this song came out when I was in high school. Loved it. Now it’s a classic.
Cheers, all.
very eloquently expressed. I'm from Detroit, been through a few long snowstorm drives.
