Bush explained in a 1985 interview: "It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities. It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem." This is so beautiful ❤

@@nothabad I disagree with you completely on the song its actually pretty great from a musical and thematic aspect but I won't say anything to try to change your mind. Also, not the biggest fan of the show
I was a kid when this song came out, my mother was a big Kate Bush fan. Her songs bring back so many memories of childhood. I have a teenager of my own now who enjoys this song and it brings me joy that 3 generations of my family can enjoy her music
@@elijahangel2473 who said I wasn't? I said I have a teenager who now enjoys this song, and in a later comment confirmed because of Stranger Things. He's been listening to it constantly hence why it was in my UA-cam recommended list, I came to listen to it myself and made my original comment stating how much I enjoyed the fact that 3 generations of my family are now Kate Bush fans.
For the generation (me included) born in the 1960/70-ties, Kate was a huge pop-icon. My older sister owned her first three albums. I still relate to every word and lyric. She played those records a lot. Thank you for playing them.
Thank you for sharing this, Very enjoyable artist, she has a unique tone to her voice and a very original way to show a certain emotion. Be grateful to your sister because this is truly a masterpiece ;
As a drummer this song does my head in… in a FANTASTIC way. The vocals don’t follow the usual pop-rhythmic conventions; they have their own beautiful, “non-sensical” logic. They’re pure ballet. A work of genius. ❤
+Keith Moriyama I don't know if Kate qualified as a professional level dancer but EMI paid for at least two years of dance training including from noted dancer/mime Lindsay Kemp (who also taught David Bowie).
I saw an interesting interview once with Bjork. She was asked who her influences were, without hesitation she said, " Kate Bush gave me permission to let all my sounds out. If it weren't for Kate Bush I would not have the courage to be me." BOOOM RESPECT!!!
That really is high praise coming from Bjork. I totally understand why Kate Bush would be the person to inspire full expression. She's one of the most creative musicians ever.

So happy that we can rejoice here, under this video. Music just like history goes around in a circle, and oh am i so happy that Kate is known, me myself as person born quite early that is 2003, have known her forever, because my mother was a massive 80s kid and she introduced me to all the jazz haha
Yep!! I'm an 80s baby anyways so I already loved this song, but when I heard it during the Max scene on Stanger Things it literally gave me chills and I immediately added it to my favorites.
Every time I hear the amazing Kate and this beautiful song. I think of my lovely mum passed in 1986 she was 53 I’m now 58 I thought of her every time I heard this song. I wanted to make a deal with God to swap places with her.
yes, she is a beautiful "old soul" and this video is timeless, so graceful, yet poetic and romantic all at the same time. Loved Kate's music seems like forever still do..
A song that lets me remember times with my Dad, albeit with great sadness, driving me to school and not wanting to leave him, wishing I could stay with him in that safe space and keep driving. I miss you Dad every single day...
“If I only could I’d make a deal with god and I’d get him to swap our places” Can’t help but tear up. My mom passed away last week and she loved this song so much. I’d do anything to have her back. RIP Mommy Feb 24, 1974 - Nov 26, 2022 ❤
Perfect example of why older classics should be used in modern TV shows and movies. So many people hadn't heard this song and it made it popular for a second time for a whole new generation.
I had never even heard of Kate Bush before this song featured so well on Stranger Things. Now I am a big fan. Amazing voice and very interesting songs.
It’s up for interpretation but Kate said herself it was about stepping into the other genders position and the understanding that would come from that.
@@s.w.0.3 Right that is what Kate intended, it definitely can apply to someone to experiencing deep depression from survivor's guilt as well like in Max's case on Stranger Things.

It is so gratifying to see a whole new generation of people discover Kate Bush. When I was in high school, a friend played me a cassette tape (hey, it was 1978) of her first album, "The Kick Inside". By the time "Hounds of Love" came out, I was a huge fan. As someone on here commented, it's strange that in the 1980s, many considered her songs and videos to be weird, but now, they make perfect sense. Guess that's one definition of being ahead of one's time.
Love your story!! I also think its great too because i'm young and my parents didn't even know of her music until I told them about her after watching stranger things! so cool how music moves!
This is one of those songs I've heard as a kid growing up but never really knowing the artist nor the lyrics to the entire song but I'm glad Stranger Things could provide the nostalgia for me to realize what the title and artists name.was.
It’s kind of awesome that Stranger Things being set in the 80’s has made that era of music popular again for a new generation. I’m 19 and I can honestly say I would have never discovered this song or many others that have now become some of my favorites had it not been for that show.
I only knew a handful of folks that were into Kate Bush back in the day. But you can't disguise genius. This video, I thought at the time, really is a peak moment for her, a full realization of her artistic ambitions. She wrote, arranged, played, mixed, choreographed, danced and amazingly sung this enchanting song.
this is peak? the tempo doesn't change, the music barely builds, there's virtually no instrumentation other than that goose-honk with auto-tune, the lyrical lines are disjointed and unresolved.... this is like a Hilary Duff tune without the excuse of being a teenager
37 years later this song hits it big. But don’t worry: Kate Bush is already worth a decent chunk of change. She owns the masters to this song for example. She made 2.5 million from Netflix alone. I’m 36 and had NO idea this song was as old as it was until I first went to download it 2 years ago. From the first time I heard this song I felt deeply emotional about the lyrics. As I had applied them to my own life at the time. However now having read Kate Bush’s explanation of what this son’s means it now has a more powerful emotional meaning. To change places with the person you love, making a deal with God, and seeing things through their eyes walking in their shoes, feeling their feelings: well that could bring a couple much closer together. No matter how much we explain how we feel and think to actually feel it would be something else. Something unfortunately unattainable. But it’s amazing to think about let alone make a song about.
Kate was already rich, she's just richier. Thank. Cough cough cough : she wrote all the songs, composed all the music of her discography, and since 1980 is a PRODUCER. In 2014, during her residency, 8 of her albums re-entered uk chart.... According to the House Company, in Dec 2023 she earned 8 million with ruthill. Netflix did not paid her, but the producers of Strange sthing did......... It's the only song used by the show in 4 seasons to re-entered charts around the world at n °1, and n °3 at the Billboard. Nov 2024, it got more than a 1 billion streams. Thanks. Her last TV appearance was in 1993. She just does a career from her home. Believe it or not but before Strange sthing, they were people who knew about her.
This song is literally perfect and describes Max and how she feels so well. Cried that entire scene, it was quite incredible and definitely the best scene in ST💗🥺
I thought the best scene was when they were swimming to the boat and the guy gets lifted out of the water and the basketball captains interview with the cops was such good acting
Well.... this has always been a big tune for us 80s babies. I'm glad many more generations get to understand the power of Kate Bush. I implore you to listen to more of her music. You won't be disappointed. Side note I did cry too. This song will evoke all kinds of feelings no matter the scene or film.

I turned 13 in 1985 and it feels like both a lifetime ago and just a few months. The magic of this music is how it binds us together, it creates a backdrop and witness to our precious fleeting life and memories ❤.
Your daughter has probably watched season 4 of stranger things. Some of it is gruesome but let me please advise, the show itself is a masterpiece. Friendship, sci-fi, love, monsters, alternate dimensions. It’s really good.
That synth keyboard just gets me every time. This is my 80's childhood. This is looking at my mum and dad from my car seat. Kate Bush's music will always be a powerful influence on my life.
That was a touching way you put that.. especially with that interwoven memory of your parents! The same for me but with me it was listening to the radio with my sister while watching out the window or dancing like idiots. Nowadays we have grown apart but the memories stay!
You'll never see it, but know that when I listen to this song, I think of you. I think about the glory days, about what our connection gave me. we will never be together, we will never go back, but I will always keep this range of emotions that you gave me
Agreed. This technology shit ruined my generation. Not saying artist from today don’t make good songs, but all they talk about is drugs, violence, lust, boasting, etc. I like their Melodie’s and flows but lyrics are so obscene and trivial. The 80s were so creative.
I’ve loved this song all my life. It’s incredible that a new generation of people are hearing and appreciating Kate’s music all these years later. Amazing song and amazing artist.
I hear this song and get this "Home Sick" feeling in my heart for back then. Recently heard this song in the Lifetime movie about Elizabeth Smart. Got the chills!
I remember this song when I was a kid back in the 80’s. Listening to it again in the 4th epic episode of ST, was like a punch in the stomach that brought me back to my childhood and it is just perfect for that scene. I can’t stop rewatching episode 4.

This song wasn’t overlooked at all. It’s always been considered Kate Bush’s best song and entered the Rolling Stones’ Top 500 songs the year before it was in Stranger Things
@@ste9281 It tends to be a dual between this & Wuthering Heights. I looked up a dozen or so Kate Bush top hits compilations (which are often quite silly), but those two always were changing places. But those "Best of" lists normally only deal in hit songs. This song is undeniably #1 when it comes to sales. But when you look at all of her albums & releases and you're a big fan, then it's almost impossible to choose a #1 song. It's hard to be objective & choose a best song of hers. There are so many brilliant songs that might qualify. And you're right. It was never overlooked. This album even knocked Madonna off the number 1 spot in the UK. The single reached #3. But, "The Rolling Stone", which used to be really good in the 70s and 80s, is not taken very seriously anymore. They keep changing their top hits based on current listeners & trends. The last one was in 2004 and Running Up That Hill was not on it (nor any other hit of hers).
Amanda Evans You’re definitely not alone. I was listening to Kate Bush before lockdown. I’m listening to her during lockdown and I’ll be listening to her after lockdown ends. ❤️

The creative dance artistry is superb. Kate’s voice is chilling my soul. Remembering her voice from the late seventies. Chilled me to the bone. Mesmerising - still.
all it takes is prominent placement in a popular tv show / movie for an old song to become revitalized. helps that the song is catchy to begin with too
@Javier Antonio Nope. Only us teenagers and our music tastes exist. This song didn't matter and wasn't popular or relevant to anyone until our generation finally listened to it. Other generations didn't have or make songs popular like we do.
This song is a rare masterpiece and has been such a powerful song for me, times in my life where I felt like I was under the upper hand. Kate Bush was one of a kind.
My friend of 4 years tragically passed away back in August at the age of 19 after being hit by a car. The day I found out he went braindead, I had never felt so alone in my life. The next day, our whole friend group went to visit him in the hospital. He was being kept alive by machines, but I knew he was no longer there. I had a weird guilt wash over me. We ended up going to Applebee's after, and the group banter was lively like nothing had happened and all I could think about was the friend we all just lost. I remember I had to go to the bathroom to collect myself and heard this song playing. Specifically the part at 2:37 was playing. It stuck with me. In that moment all I could think about was what it would be if we swapped places and he had lived. I try not to think about it but this song brings me a melancholic comfort now when I listen to it. I miss him and if given the chance, would swap out places in a heartbeat. But I can't, and so I miss him. But I consider myself lucky to have someone that mattered so much to me that the loss effected me so heavily.
I loved this song and the album 35 years ago (may be off a year) - it's haunting. Songs about challenges, living, experiencing. The entire album is an experience. Thank you Kate!

It creates insecurities. It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings.

Netflix did not paid her, but the producers of Strange sthing did......... It's the only song used by the show in 4 seasons to re-entered charts around the world at n °1, and n °3 at the Billboard.

It's very true. The 80s had incredible music and was an incredible time!
Makes me think Sia was probably heavily influenced by Kate Bush as her whole act seems like what Kate Bush is doing in this video.

I lost a friend, Vweta Chadwick. But somehow this song kept playing in my head. She’s an angel. And I’ll miss her. Pls help me say a prayer for her. May we meet again in this life or the next. Really wish I could make a deal with God right now... 22.07.2020 ❤️
I‘ll pray for her

With its haunting melody and evocative lyrics, it draws you into a world of emotional intensity and raw human experience. A timeless classic that continues to resonate deeply. 🌟🎶
Kate Bush - a true, original artist who Sia, Lady Gaga, Florence and the Machine, Tori Amos and numerous others owe a lot to for inspiration ! I have loved Kate Bush for over 30 years and still find her amazing and relevant.
Have just gotten into her music recently and I'm amazed by her creativity, musical prowess & originality. She's truly something else entirely.
beautiful how you can see the influence she made on today's artists really shows she was innovative :)
Without you saying much, I know for sure you're underestimating Lady Gaga. Listen to her acoustic lives (like Speechless, You and I), and stuff like her Sound of Music tribute and be prepared to have your jaw drop.
Lady Gaga?? Hate to say, but she was the 1st Miley Cyrus. No way in helllll she looked up to Kate Bush, cause Kate Bush is a lot classy.

Same. I'm a 32 years old dude that have the luck of have parents that loved this type of Music. As a kid life is not always perfect but something that always remember is having like 10 years old and wake up because my dad was listening Kate bush, David Bowie, Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd and others and I was not even mad and I think it's one of the reasons I love this type of music. 80s music is unbeaten IMO.

How are 25 if u were born in the 70s...🤔
Absolute artistic magic. Almost 65 years old and miss the expertise in creative music and arts. However, enjoying to the max. Love it.
I was 18 years old when this song was first in the charts in 1985. I still love it and never get tired of it.What a drumline!!
I was 5 when this came out I would do anything to go back to the 80s
I was -20 but it still makes me somehow nostalgic

great music is timeless!
this song is so ahead of it's time and going strong today, really amazing beat!
I remember hearing this song on 91X in San Diego back in the 80s and thinking how amazing it is. I still think it's amazing even after all these years.
When I was in USMC '92 I listened to this station!
91x still plays it on Sundays
I'm here to see if I remember this song from the 80s lol
91X in the 80's was so incredible!
Wow you've been a douche that long?
1985 people... 1985. i was 6 years old, and i still remember my older brothers listening to this. Lost one of them, but the music lives forever.

Well hello fellow people :) Didn't really expect to get any reaction.
I was 8 in 1985. I have an older sister and two older brother's and got much of my musical taste from them. One brother past away jan 2022 at 51 from cancer. Music is so great it helps keep us going..
J'avais 16 ans en 1985 ........Ces musiques , ces voix sont éternelles et ............sont toujours dans ma tête .......Je ne les ai jamais oublié ....... Jamais quitté ..........Impossible ........Jusqu'a la mort .
Ah oui vraiment ? À ce point là ?... Y'avait des disques ou des k7 en support...
Kate Bush has always been a genius in my eyes. I played the The Kick inside' on the loop as a teenager, much to my parent's dismay. My children are now fans and her songs still hold up today.
I actually just discovered kate.. I cannot believe i had never heard of this incredible woman. My jaw DROPPED when I saw the wuthering heights video.. And this.. How can this be so innovative almost what? About 50years?? This is so timeless. I don't know a single 90's kid in the U.S who knows her but oh my god. I'm going to listen to every last piece of music of hers I can get my hands on. So high brow, and simple.. Wow.
I know of her. Im '92. People told me to listen to her because of my music taste and I finally did two years ago and wow.
Glad to see a millennial getting into her music. She put out brilliant work back then. But this video wasn't 50 years ago! Lol...31 to be exact. But this kind of video made over 30 years ago...pretty damn good aye! I think its the most sophisticated one she made.
+BoxOfFrogs yeah I just saw this was released in 85! My mistake I thought it was released in the early 70's! I just assumed. Way off!. I guess that's why I was so shocked something like this existed that early on! Realizing how under appreciated she is. She should be revered on the level of bowie honestly.. But because she's a women she's just placed in the weird and alternative category.. She's definitely a national treasure for you guys across the pond.

***** No he was referring to the timeframe of the video...anyway she's currently 57 years old and will be 58 on July 30 this year.

Lyrics:
It doesn't hurt me
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making?
You
It's you and me
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
See, if I only could, oh
You don't want to hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder
Oh, there is thunder in our hearts
Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
You
It's you and me
It's you and me, won't be unhappy
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
See, if I only could, oh
You
It's you and me
It's you and me, won't be unhappy
Oh, come on, baby
Oh, come on, darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
Oh, come on, angel
Come on, come on, darling
Let's exchange the experience, oh, uh
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
I'd be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems
See, if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
I'd be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems
See, if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
I'd be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems

You're right. It's Mad that people are taking this to the Max.
It's funny that you said "Strangest Thing", since the reason most young people are here, is because of "Stranger Things"
The creative dance artistry is superb. Kate’s voice is chilling my soul. Remembering her voice from the late seventies. Chilled me to the bone. Mesmerising - still.

Crazy how a song can reach this much success decades and generations after being released
it's a good song
it literally has had huge success for decades already, it's a classic 80s chart topper
Bohemian Rhapsody from 75 :D
all it takes is prominent placement in a popular tv show / movie for an old song to become revitalized. helps that the song is catchy to begin with too
@Javier Antonio Nope.
Yes she is
*is* one of a kind

Yup they're constantly been making fils and shows set in the 8os for bout past 10years now. But only a few get it right.. The Guest was great film with very 80s sounding music. This scene definetly got it right this time in the show best episode. Was so lucky to be born 81
