- Опубліковано 21 бер 2017
- Derek Roddy has gained a reputation worldwide as an extreme metal drummer. And in this lesson he shares his expertise with regards to the genre and, specifically, with regards to blast beats.
Developing blast beats the right way can be the difference between a basement drummer and a recording professional. Considering Derek has earned himself the nickname "One Take" for being able to record entire albums in a single afternoon, its pretty obvious which one he is. Derek will break down the mechanics of this technical movement and help you understand exactly how to set yourself up for success and get you blasting faster.
If you're familiar with Derek's playing, you'll know that he's all about balance! When it comes to blast beats and double bass playing, having all your limbs on an equal skill level is crucial to having a consistent sound - so that's exactly why we are giving you these tips from a pro drummer.

We disagree on the concept of "a little faster"...
No doubt!
I remember watching this dude's blast beat videos back in the early days of UA-cam. What a legend
>little faster
*triples tempo*
cyysv haha I chuckled at that when I saw this video
So Derek is the Thanos of drumming... "perfectly balanced, as all things should be" 😎
he IS thanos
@Steven Pounsett Yes he's more powerful and faster. But he's less creative (except his stuffs outside of Nile)
@Steven Pounsett jesus fucking christ calm down dude
@Steven Pounsett butthurt much?
Thanos is just a pale imitation of Darkseid who is superior in every way.
Like George kollias.
"A little faster" he says...
Hugh Mungus what?
Dadadadadadadadada 🤣
Wow it's been so long since I watched Derek Roddy's videos... please have him back for more content like this!
Derek is such personable, patient and pleasant person! You would never think he plays this violent, dark, evil type of music! 😂LOVE THIS GUY! 🤘🏻🖤🤘🏻
What a surprise to know this was the man blasting on King of All Kings. What a legend.
I like the advice on setting a time limit/ starting just above your comfort level/ and starting with the non dominant limbs
I'm proud of y'all for putting "A debt owed to the grave" by Revocation in the little intro
Might have something to do with Ash Pearson 🤔
This is extremely useful, thank you! Lead with weaker limb is great practical advice.... It works and I suggest why not extend the concept and brush your teeth non dominant? Brush your hair. Write... Our brains love repetition.
What a gentle giant he is.
He’s only 5,9.5 😂 and fast and fudge.... I’d consider giant as gene hoglen
I honestly expected him to finish up the faster demonstration, and then say "And here it is THE FASTEST"
Awesome tips man. Very appreciated i love the channel. Been a guitar player for twenty years but by god I’ve always had the itch to do blast beats. Set up my electric set a few days ago. I’m about to get crunk 🎉
Starting with the kick or the snare seems like a big overlooked topic.
The last tip is the best tip in the internet right now
can u maybe get danny carey and chris adler to do some lessons? that would kick ass! thanks for uploading drumeo
Omar Peck Danny Carey please! I don't think he's the type to do this but I could be wrong. I would love to see him on here, that much I know.
Danny Carey please
I don't even dream of playing that cleanly
another good reason to practice at least simpler songs with other foot/hand etc is when you lose a stick/beater. I once lost the beater from my right pedal and finished out the song using my left foot. Luckily it wasn't a very complex song or double bass reliant but it certainly saved my ass. Then i was able to re-attach and tighten the beater back to my pedal for the next song.
Happened to me a few times too. Left foot can be a life saver!
thanks drumeo
Hey! Don't mention it!
Hi Derek, the suggestion, I really like, of course, I like them all, is the one about using the weaker side. You see, I started out as a left handed drummer. and I am now working with the weaker right side. thanks for the video. That was some good stuff. Keep up the good work.
ambidextrous drumming... Never thought that way.. totally have a whole new world to explore... Thx
Gorgeous kit !
Looks like a great instructor
Nice video, thanks for the help!
I remember from 10 years ago he has a tutorial vid similar and more in depth somewhere out there
this guy is a fucking legend. he would be the best dad in the world
That drumset is goddamn beautiful
Yeah love the flake paint :-)
This exercise helped a lot
All these dudes are professionals.
How do you break a hole in the space/time continuum? Put Roddy, Kollias and Rudinger in the same room playing blast beats at the same time.
Thank you!!!
The nicest person ever to get famous in a band with a name like "Hate Eternal."
I think I’m going to set up home home drum set lefty style. Just to get better.
You're really talented at this :D
Great exercise!
Drumeo rocks thanks!
Exceptional vidd, dropped a like =)
Amazing independence
He is,
Inevitable.
aaand a little faster...my body says nope
Do it slow for long periods of time (I really pushed the limits a while ago, giving each of those coordination and endurance excercises 20 minutes of straight playing it, but 10-15 should be completely fine already), then increase the bpm slowly, about 5 bpm, every three or four days (If you are able to do this excercise daily. If you can only get to it once every few days, put up the Metronome once every two weeks or so). This really helped me with my legs at gaining speed (went from 170 to 220 in round about three and a half months) as well as getting proper control along the way.
It's also easier with those direct drive pedals.
Awesome
Roddy rocks !
This guy is the god of the blast
🔥🔥🔥🧨
I bought your book like a hundred years ago! :D
@Drumeo please please invite Mike Portnoy, I think I'm not the only one who wants to see him! Greetings from Peru
awsome
What’s the opening song? The one at the very beginning?
Daddy Derek!👍
I can feel it coming in the air tonight .. dogoodogoodogoodogoodgoodogoodogoo
What 12” china is that above his rack toms? I know he plays Meinl, but that looks like a Sabian Holy China
Big follower of drumeo, had drumeo edge subscription but its bit expensive, if drumeo gives some good offers it would be great. Thanks.
What do you think is a fair price for the value we provide?
That depends on person to person, I would feel close to 20 to 23 dollars per month is a fair deal, I would love to subscribe back again if I get some better offers just waiting for those!! Thanks for the reply,.. cheers!!!
An annual membership is $197 ($16.41 per month). So now you have no excuses. Also, if you sign up right now you'll get a free practice pad. drumeo.com
So its tom then bass, or snare then bass?
When are you going to bring on Dirk Verbeuren?
What were the time limits?
1:18 is like the intro to disasterpiece by slipknot
He’s such a dad. 😘
He is beautiful man..
heeeeeeey i think i know that guy!
The struggles of tryin to blast beats with one foot
start a blackmetal band, and don't duck walk. that's what I did. My band Illithid put out a self-titled, its all 1-foot. its not that fast but it definitely helped develop my 1-foot blasting, which really helped me get to a point where I could bomb-blast really easily, just add the second foot in at the same tempo and boom, you're bomb-blasting.
never seen a metal drummer use coated heads
Expected much more from him.
More out of a 6 minute "quick tips" shoot? His advice is simple and honest.
More advanced i mean.
There's actually 12 possible combinations when talking about limb pairs.
RH LH, RH RF, RH LF
LH RH, LH RF, LH LF
RF LF, RF RH, RF LH
LF RF, LF RH, LF LH
RH = right hand
LH = left hand
RF = right foot
LF = left foot
how is RH LH a blast beat tho?
Believe it or not, driving a stick helped me develop my left foot but I’m not anywhere close to here yet.
Late to the party but...
*OKAY.*
motor lag
On record: Sounds like Satan plays drums. On video: Talks like John Denver.
with one foot jesus
Lol that ralph lauren polo
They turned the left kick Mic way down
Anybody know the bass drum head for that sound, would love to try that out
I think it's Remo Powerstroke 3. I might be wrong.
Did DW sent this Champagne sparkle per order? or do they just sent the artist drum sizes etc... but pick a particular color model regardless of the genre of the artist? because it's (at least for me) strange seeing a Thrash, Metal, Hardcore ect... drummer ask for a drum wrapping more associated with a jazz or Big band Gig.
We had to pay to rent it through backline and this is all they had. I like the look of the kit.
At which part did he explain how to do a blast beat? lmao
YALL NEED TO HAVE MATT GREINER!
Master Nøbe GEEZ YES HE'S THE GOD OF DRUMMING
Yo that bass drum sounds like a CoD hitmaker XD
Funny thing that the way he talks and explains reminds a jazz guy...
Hey it's that one dude who didn't make it into Dream Theater!
2nd
i dont see any kind of blast beat here
all those cymbals and they're never used lol
Does he need to hit every cymbal to illustrate the points he's making in this lesson?
Actually I've seen him play and use even more cymbals and like 5 or 6 pedals before in songs, it was ridiculous.
immigrant song ftw
Proof of how difficult it is to play with your weak foot: 4:56 and onwards is really sloppy.
first
a little faster?? really??
come on, don't be sarcasm.
Not digging the vintage drums in a death metal setup.
The video never answers the fundamental question - why do "blast beats" even exist in the first place?
They are just a slightly more refined version of what a 9 year old tries to do the first time they sit down at a drum set.
Theyre for exteme metal
wow a dumb comment by some guy who'd have thought
