  • Derek Roddy has gained a reputation worldwide as an extreme metal drummer. And in this lesson he shares his expertise with regards to the genre and, specifically, with regards to blast beats.
Developing blast beats the right way can be the difference between a basement drummer and a recording professional. Considering Derek has earned himself the nickname "One Take" for being able to record entire albums in a single afternoon, its pretty obvious which one he is. Derek will break down the mechanics of this technical movement and help you understand exactly how to set yourself up for success and get you blasting faster.
If you're familiar with Derek's playing, you'll know that he's all about balance! When it comes to blast beats and double bass playing, having all your limbs on an equal skill level is crucial to having a consistent sound - so that's exactly why we are giving you these tips from a pro drummer.

another good reason to practice at least simpler songs with other foot/hand etc is when you lose a stick/beater. I once lost the beater from my right pedal and finished out the song using my left foot. Luckily it wasn't a very complex song or double bass reliant but it certainly saved my ass. Then i was able to re-attach and tighten the beater back to my pedal for the next song.

Hi Derek, the suggestion, I really like, of course, I like them all, is the one about using the weaker side. You see, I started out as a left handed drummer. and I am now working with the weaker right side. thanks for the video. That was some good stuff. Keep up the good work.

Do it slow for long periods of time (I really pushed the limits a while ago, giving each of those coordination and endurance excercises 20 minutes of straight playing it, but 10-15 should be completely fine already), then increase the bpm slowly, about 5 bpm, every three or four days (If you are able to do this excercise daily. If you can only get to it once every few days, put up the Metronome once every two weeks or so). This really helped me with my legs at gaining speed (went from 170 to 220 in round about three and a half months) as well as getting proper control along the way.

start a blackmetal band, and don't duck walk. that's what I did. My band Illithid put out a self-titled, its all 1-foot. its not that fast but it definitely helped develop my 1-foot blasting, which really helped me get to a point where I could bomb-blast really easily, just add the second foot in at the same tempo and boom, you're bomb-blasting.

Did DW sent this Champagne sparkle per order? or do they just sent the artist drum sizes etc... but pick a particular color model regardless of the genre of the artist? because it's (at least for me) strange seeing a Thrash, Metal, Hardcore ect... drummer ask for a drum wrapping more associated with a jazz or Big band Gig.
