    "How do I develop speed?" is probably the #1 question drummers ask, and even more so to Derek Roddy as an extreme metal player. The most common answer is to simply start slow and work your way up, but Derek brings forth some great insights on other efficient ways to hit those top speeds.

    I was replaced by Derek in a band many years ago. Out of curiosity I went to the first show with my bands “new drummer”, just to see who this new drummer is and whether or not this guy could play. Well you can imagine how I felt after seeing Derek play. It was obvious I had to go home and practice………forever. The band was Joybuzzer/Bedlam Hour.

    One thing I feel rings completely true in what he says is the "If you want to be able to do it, you gotta do it" thing. Sounds stupid, but I had been practicing blastbeats on and off for several years with little success until I started a Grindcore band with a couple friends and I just had to do blastbeats for it to be considered Grindcore. Still work to be done, but by "just doing them" I have kinda taken the fear of failure away from blastbeats and have fun throwing them in our songs.

    • @bladelazoe
      @bladelazoe 7 років тому +5

      I'm suffering from the same thing, I love blast beats but I just have not been able to get them to the speed I really want to play them at, but his concept of play a song 5 times in a row from beginning to end, consistently every day is something I'm gonna do and see how that comes along. I feel like "I just do it" is the right mentality here.

      Justin Powers 2 years later, how are your blasts?

    • @bladelazoe
      @bladelazoe 2 роки тому

      @@acidrain812 Totally forgot this comment, their clean at around 160'ish but I always kept '"Practicing" vs stepping into it and exposing my body to that type of speed. I had a moment tonight where I finally understood what "I had to do it" meant. I've been practicing all kinds of technique on and off for years and finally decided to say fuck it, Put Angel of death on UA-cam player, put on headphones and just GO. It made me realize something, just expose your body to that tempo/song for awhile and your body will adjust. Even if your super sloppy and terrible, just play as much as you can. Just like failing on a certain weight at the gym, your body is learning to adjust to that weight when your recovering. Same with speed.
      I did this with another song awhile back, Ghosts "Dance Macabre". Simple song but It took me awhile to get it, I applied to same method, 5 times in a row every day. Each day improving more than the last.

      I’ve always thought that this style is in its own way effortless, compared to the showy way I’ve always played live to much slower tempos. To play this stuff I need the proper muscle groups and practicing like I did in drum line. Once you get those muscles built, it really isn’t as hard as it looks, or so I’m told.

      neil maccannell I agree - his work with COF and Dimmu Borgir is top of the line. very few drummers are able to play fast/heavy with taste and finesse.

    Derek might have gotten a little bit older-- maybe he lost a little bit of strength somewhere in his body-- it comes with age-- but he has progressed into this most refined drummer that went way beyond his limitations and expectations that he set forth for himself almost 30 years ago!!!!! I was with him back in 2002 before I went off to war for a year---they played a 12 song set and I’m here to tell you right now---it was a wall of drums and he was playing so hard and so fast you couldn’t even hear the beats it was just a constant measure of sound and strength!!!!!!!! I still remember this---he is inhuman!!!! Love you my friend!!!!! 🫡🇺🇸😘☠️☠️☠️☠️😎🙏

    I find it crazy how different his left foot is from his right foot when doing fast double bassing but it sounds so precise and perfect.

    • @crimsun7186
      @crimsun7186 7 років тому +1

      You may have noticed the Roland kick trigger box right beside his right floor tom. That's how you get the precise and consistent sound on both bass drums. Which is weird since Derek was trying to not user triggers at all in the past. Wondering what made him change his mind.

    • @qlqnen
      @qlqnen 7 років тому +6

      Easier to mix and improves monitoring a lot, might be optimal choice for a performance such as this. They have the bass drums mic'd as well, so might be a mix of microphone and trigger sound.

    • @pugmonzzz
      @pugmonzzz 7 років тому +3

      qlqnen I honestly love the sound of triggered bass drums. I rarely see people who agree with me though

    • @Volos__
      @Volos__ 7 років тому

      Both my feet tend to be like his left foot, which is weird. So many people I know do the swivelly swiv to do the fast things, but I just seem to make it work like that haha

    • @qlqnen
      @qlqnen 7 років тому

      pugmonzzz For me it depends on the trigger sound. If it's an over-the-top click sound, I tend to dislike it (like Decapitated's Nihility), but in some cases even a clearly triggered sound can be appropriate and cool. Aeon's Bleeding the False on the other hand has a very distinct trigger sample and I think it only adds to the character of the album sound. I use the Alesis DM5 with what Gene Hoglan called "the only usable sound in the entire module" (paraphrasing) and it serves its purpose for monitoring and hearing my bass drums clearly during band practice. It's a decent sound if you can tweak it a bit further with an EQ, I think.

    When I was a teenager, and death metal came to the scene, I always felt that thare was a lack of technique on the drummers, and tought about what could be done. Unfortunatly, I didn´t became a professional drummer, but I´m glad to see that nowadays there are many technical drummers pushing the playing level (and sounnding) up.

    derek is right on the money! you gotta push this stuff and eventually you will get it. it will be sloppy but once you get it you make it stronger cuz youre pushing to go even faster and the slower speeds become easier to play and you get more control/power from the slower speeds as your climbing up the BPMs. pushing to say 170 bpm. once you can play 170 bpm for a set amount of time, 160 bpm should be easier and more powerful. worked for me. practice makes perfect. just gotta sit down and do it. paradiddle with a short roll worked wonders for my foot control as well

    I play heel up on both of my feet but i swivel with the left and keep the right straight when i play fast.
    And as you say, whatever works, works!

    I remember being blown away by his speed, now that I can do it, it doesn't look or sound so fast at all. Still among the 1% in the Metal category, up there w/ Hoglan, Haake, and Kollias. l'd like for him to play more jazz stuff because I know he can.
    People like Roddy really inspire me, I remember him working at Resurrection Drums in Hallandale and talking to him, he said when everyone else was out at the beach, he'd be playin' drums. It shows.
