    I have a 99 Lude and I love it. My girl said get rid of the car....instead I got rid of her! Don't ever disrespect the Lude.

      Replying 3years later, lol. I keep thinking about the RWD kit but it’s still a bit of a scavenger hunt for parts. Sad. It’d be an amazing RWD car and a legend if it were.

      Nah it's fine FWD. Because of that you can still pick them up today for fairly cheap!

      duuuuuude ive been saying that for so long! they totally should have made it real wheel drive. woulda been the perfect predecessor for the s2k that came out pretty much right when the ludes stopped being made

    I built and am currently racing my 5th gen Prelude, I've owned it for 12 years, has an H22A, M2B4 LSD trans, Ground Control Coil overs, and a roll bar with harness and bucket seat. Love my Lude

      Happy & Addicted H22s are pretty easy to work on. The major issues are the timing belt auto tensioners. As soon as you start modding the motor the tensioners will fail. You have to switch them to a manual tensioner. The preludes tend to burn oil, so every so often your V-TEC will fail to engage. A simple oil change can correct that. I used to get fouled spark plugs every so often. I also had a few bad dizzies with internal coil problems. I had to replace the V-TEC solenoid once. That’s most of the issues I’ve seen after owning 2 2001 Preludes.

    4 wheel; To my understanding the rear wheel steering for lane changes went in the identical direction as the fronts ... Then for parking lot maneuvering when the steering reached a point the rear wheels would turn opposite as you described. Pretty nifty mechanism.

    I own a 01 prelude base model. I love this car. It's quick and hugs the road. It's a fun car to drive. Mine is completely stock right now. As much fun as this car is, Honda missed a huge opportunity with this car. This should have been a rwd car. I feel like it should have been a competitor for the supra and even gtr of the time. I am currently planning a rwd conversion for the car. I will have a huge amount of work on my hands but I think it will be badass.

      Steven Kuhn If you think about it the 86/BRZ is virtually a RWD Prelude there weight is virtually identical at 2800-2900 pounds.

      *Before RWD swapping it add Coilovers if it's a monster truck and add a cold Air intake and a exhaust*

      @@rick-hj3jg I plan on an exhaust but I need to do some things to my truck first. As for a cold air intake, I deleted the intake resonator for more air flow. it is already a cai. I might just build a custom air box and tube. I like the way it sits right now. I'm not looking for slamming it.

    I just got a 5th gen Prelude a couple weeks ago. Luckily, it wasn't destroyed, but it is definitely a bit rough around the edges. Functionally, it works fine. Had a couple issues that I went ahead and fixed. But the body could use some new paint, and a new side skirt (factory one has a chunk missing).
    First issue being the lack of a radiator fan. Not sure what dumbass thought it'd be a good idea to remove it, but I wound up replacing it with a universal fan. Luckily, this didn't damage anything.
    Second was a bad battery. Luckily, Walmart carries fairly inexpensive batteries, so I went that route.
    Third, oil leaks. I was given a couple of seals when I bought the car, they just needed to be installed. Luckily, I had a mechanic that I trust do the work, and he even went ahead and fixed another leak that I didn't know about. Cost me under $500 for the work, but I'm losing less oil, and I had less downtime than I would if I did it myself. I still need to take care of the oil pan gasket though.
    Fourth is a bad catalytic converter. As with the seals, I received a brand new CAT when I bought the car. Won't need a mechanic to do this one.
    I also needed to clean the throttle body a little bit, as I started having some odd behavior out of the blue. The car started to jerk, and act as if it wanted to stall, even though I was in the correct gear at 60MPH. Luckily, some seafoam in the gas tank, and a bit of cleaning of the throttle body seems to have alleviated that issue. Currently, I have no CEL, so I'm going to wait until that comes back on (if it ever does) and then take it to Autozone.
    The unfortunate part about these cars is that they will usually need quite a bit of work. But, if you're willing to get your hands dirty, the reward is a pretty fun car to drive that won't cost a small fortune. I mean, I got this thing because I didn't want to spend a crap ton more at a dealership, but needed a second car so my wife can start driving our minivan and stop relying on me to get her everywhere.

    You forgot to mention the fifth gen Type SH that came with Active Torque Transferring System or ATTS! ATTS basically allows you to turn into a corner faster with the front wheel turning faster than the outer wheel. Downside of a Type SH is that at around 250hp, the ATTS ECU malfunctions and therefore, makes the unit into dead weight

    Oh that H22a engine. Brings back so many memories. Back in the day I had a 91 Accord EX 4dr with 5spd manual and swapped in a h22a. Back then we didn't have a whole lot of info on dyi engine swaps so a lot of trial and error and figuring out yourself had to be done. But that thing was a sleeper and fun to drive. Damn I miss that car!

      thats pretty legit. ive always wanted a 2nd or 3rd gen lude with an h22 swap. i had a cb7 accord with h22a and loved it. but those older ludes looked so good.

    Honestly id say get a 4th gen with the h23. Theyre easier to find and the h23 has a closed deck which will avoid cracking. Once you have that then just swap an h22 head and h22a4 pistons in and now youve got an h23vtec. All of those mods can be done with the engine still in the car and youll end with a stroked h22

    I had a 88 Prelude that we owned for several years. Canary yellow screamer! The wife kept getting speeding tickets in it and I got rid of it! What an engine! Loved that little go cart!

    Just bought a '00 Prelude a couple months ago for $160. Just needed to get new tires on the front. Otherwise it's in really good shape. High miles on the engine and a small oil leak I'm still investigating. It's been fun to work on for sure! I get to paint the flat black nasty hood a fine gloss black to match the rest of the car this weekend! Super excited slowly making this car reflect me.

    Middle aged guy here, who has been daily driving this Lude since 2002. I have a black 97 SH that already had 80k mi when I got it, I drove hard and didn't really maintain things - yet it's still running fine on almost all factory original parts (except consumables), with no major repairs, and just a lot of smiles in the corners. It's lived outside the whole time, so the clear coat is pretty shot, she does burn some oil, and she could use new shocks, bushing/mounts, but I can't complain given her age. It's insane seeing all the comments about you kids just discovering the lude or folks always wanting this car or regretting ever selling it...

    I had a 94 vtec and the vtec engage at 5500 rpm. With an intake you can feel a jump when vtec kick in. The car was heavy. You can feel it. The hood felt heavy and the door are heavy too. I had me and two sibling in the car and i feel slow with 3 people.We all weight about 170 each. 190 hp stick factory.weight 2932.bought the car in 2003 and sold it in 2006 due too high gas price in California at the time. It was 4.70 a gallon for premium. I work an hr away, so it was burning a hole in my wallet. This car average city 22-26 mpg. I regret selling it because this is a rare model. I paid 9g for it back then. I was 18 at the time i got this car. Didn't have car insurance back then. The law wasnt that strict back then. Plus. I couldnt afford it. The guy at eastwood insurance back then told me is was 250 for laibilty. I said f that and went home.i had a blast with this car. Its fun , but i think the rsx s it a better power to rate ratio car.i drove one at the dealership and it felt alot lighter. My bro had a 95 prelude si and it felt light compared to my vtec model.one thing about this car is that the back seat room is tiny. My size 10 feet get stuck. I have family members thar struggles to get out of the car from the back seat.

    I drive a red 5th gen prelude, 5 speed, year 2000 and it’s completely stock, no modifications to the car what so ever. Keeping the car forever.

      Have had my 99 for over 15yrs now. Im only the 2nd owner. It now sits in the garage next to the currently aquired 04 S2K with 40k on it. Im also the 2nd owner of that car as well.

      Got a 800$ h23a vtec blue top from hmotors for my 5th gen and it's basically a brand new car again :). Find another car so cheap that can toe to toe with a Scion frs. We're talking 20 years difference ....

    Got a 2nd generation 1986 5 speed 2.0 Si prelude and then 5th 1998 2.2 5 speed manual transmission, never been raced, factory stock which I bought brand new sitting in my garage now with 75,000 miles. Driven only to work and now just driven rarely. Planning of selling it.

    H23A Vtec in my 2001 with a rebuilt transmission, carbon fiber synchros, and an accord 5th gear. Sitting at my work needing a new master cylinder and brake hoses. It already has Acura Legend GS dual piston calipers on the front.

      Awesome trans. mods but the legend GS calipers are really not a good mod in my opinion because of the weight. I owned a 94 GS type II and rebuilt all for calipers and installed EBC (never again) slotted rotors and greenstuff pads.

    I literally own the Prelude in your thumbnail. The guy who I bought it from was reached out to by Rotiform to be the face of the Rotiform TMB Machined Wheels on thier website. The wheels are now powder coted white with the same iconic red center cap and it is currently undergoing an engine rebuild.

    I love the third Generation Preludes stylistically they are the best. Even today. Really good quality cars. Interiors were quite durable. Even today many of them don't look too shabby considering the age of them. The only issue was the timing belts. If they broke it was an interference motor meaning valves smash into pistons. Happened to a friend's car first day we got it. In Australia we only got the twin cam cars. They were all loaded up with options including sunroof, cruise control etc.. a really great reliable car, best thing about them right now is how cheap they are.
    I think the third generation had a b20a motor but no v-tec. Not sure how tuneable they are these days, but they were very robust motors and had good pull. I've always likened these to being like mini NSX's, only shame was they were FWD.
    But I'd imagine the dorifto crowd would have ruined them all by now if they were.

      I couldn't agree more. The Gen 3 was downright gorgeous. Not much for them in the aftermarket, but they look sharp even in stock form. My favorite is 1989 Si 4WS. I liked the look of the 1991 model in all white, but the 2.1L (B21) engine in the 1991 was an oddball. By the way, the B20 used in the Gen 3 Preludes is not the same B20 used in the Gen 1 CRV. They aren't even interchangeable.

    I had a 00' auto lude but unfortunately dealt with a phony mechanic that ruined the trans. Still love want and need another one of these. Im 6'4" and it was still so much fun to drive.

    I believe the 3rd gen Prelude with 4 wheel steering had the wheels turn in the same direction for the first few degrees and then turn in the opposite direction. This provided stability for high speed turns with little steering input and (theoretically) more agility at low speeds. The high speed part worked pretty well but in practice the slow speed maneuverability suffered especially when parallel parking.

      My RLX has all wheel steering too but the wheels don't turn as much and they are powered by actuators, not a mechanical system

    Curious about your opinion on updating the engine on a prelude. I like the fourth generation and would use as a daily driver. I have the 2.4 accord engine in a 2012 Accord SE and I am so impressed with this engine with 260000 miles and all I have done was kept the oil changed. The prelude now would be in that rare exclusive club. I think it is going to be a collectors item.

    It was also Honda’s R&D test bed that didn’t share too many parts with other Hondas making the parts unique and expensive. They would have been a game changer if they were rear wheel drive...

      Actually, they shared quite a bit mechanically with Accord all the way up to the Gen 5.

      Their engines were modified versions of Accord engines. This has been like this with each gen. When Accords had A series engines the Preludes used a B series version( not to be confused with the coveted later model B series used in Civics and Civic based vehicles). The difference has always been in the top end. Later model Accords used the F Series; The Prelude used the modified version called the H Series. It always stayed true to its Accord roots. They both even used double wishbone suspensions at the same time, Except Honda eliminated it on the 1998 and on Accord, whereas the Prelude continued with it. By the way, they used the same automatic transmissions for each gen too.

      That's why my first car(96 accord) was driving so well. It was boring to look at but damn it drove so well...but they get expensive to maintain once they are passed the 10 year mark.

      After owning my 5th gen for years i can say parts aren’t any more expensive than regular parts when it comes to drivetrain maintenance, sure it’ll be kinda hard to find interior parts and body panels and stuff, but keeping up with engine and stuff is pretty normal priced, i did my timing belt job with Honda parts which was belt, tensioner and water pump for $300, even things like ball joints, axles, and bushings can be pretty cheap, i thought stuff would be expensive too until i started actually buying stuff lol

Other than that the car ran good and amazing when it would run. Manuals are the way to go tho , never buy an automatic versions of preludes Bc their transmissions are bad. Either way I would buy it if you wanted it

    The Gen 4 Prelude (92-96) also had electric 4 wheel steering option on Si model from 1992-1994 and the 190 hp VTEC model (the one you had) was offered from 1993 and 1996.
    Update: It was 1993; 1995.

    My 01 was great with just aem cold air dc header and megan exhaust. Non sh. Then i had to supercharge it lol. Had issues with it hitting strut tower on hard full throttle. In result big belt would rip. Then got better engine mounts and all was fine. But still have to replace the little belt every 6k. Then all kind of issues. To many to name but it was enough i traded it and my crx and my eg si for a 2001 s2k back in 2004. But still miss it. Especially when it could beat the new e46 m3. Total sleeper. Not even lowered lol.

    I own a 5th gen and honestly i think making the car Rwd would’ve ruined it, feeling the car around corners and at it’s limit i think the balance of the car rwd would not suit the chassis, i think the Fwd is perfect with the weight distribution of the car how all the weight is on the front wheels and even the engine is placed almost directly on top of the wheels it gives it that perfect grip and balance, the low weight towards the rear allows the rear to swing around and follow the front which is why the car doesn’t understeer easily compared to other fwd cars, if it was rwd i think the rear would have too much weight and not allow it to rotate as much

      Gabe Flores car and driver said the 5th gen drove like a rwd car but that’s how all generations of them drove. And making it rwd wouldn’t disturb weight distribution too much. The car is very close to 50/50 as is

      The 5th gen only came out a couple years before the S2K so i would assume they were being thought-out and developed around the same time, maybe they kept it Fwd so when people complained about it they would release the S2K?😂

      Gabe Flores but the 4th gen debuted when the NSX came out. The prelude has always been around RWD chassis. It was supposed to mimic rwd handling characteristics as were majority of the sporty Honda’s. I feel Honda did extremely well with the last 2 generations but I do agree, they LOOK and should’ve been rwd. Honda even experimented with longitudinal mounted engines in FWD cars. Which is like halfway rwd lol

      Sorry guys I have owned a 2001 since 09. If driven at the limit they become understeering monsters. Combination of weight and front bias... not good. Modded Integra or Civic > modded prelude. I love the car tho, but for handling Ludes can't touch Civics and Tegs.

      Mine has always worked great. I change the trans fluid every other year using Amsoil products including their 5w-30 and filters.

Like, I think someone sabotaged this car because it could've been competition to the other more popular cars of it's time. Made it such an unreliable maintenance heavy POS

    I have owned 2 Preludes: an 88 Si and a 98 Base. The 88Si handled amazingly, especially after springs and struts. Alas, it was stolen and stripped. My 98 was my partner in crime - VTEC Yo! I put an AEM intake, DC header, and SuperSprint axel-back on it, and oh how amazing it sounded. The bad for it was it burned oil later in life. No matter; I still miss that 98

    I have a 2000 Prelude with 36K on it. All original and never seen bad weather except some rain! Car is garaged and stored in winter like now here in Buffalo NY. I only use original Honda parts when replacing worn out parts. I have it insured for $10K since I'm not sure what its really worth.

    Vtec engages the middle set of valve rockers allowing the more aggressive cam lobe to do it’s work.

    The second gen lude was either carb or fuel injected. The '86 and '87 Si US spec cars got a 12 valve port fuel injected 110 hp 4.

    I have a 97
    Cammed, tuned with full bolt ons and suspension.
    I've never driven anything like it. Corners just as hard as the Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio I took out a few times. Incredible machines. Screaming to 8000 rpm with a hard vtec kick.

    I’m planning on buying a 97 prelude 5th gen with 130k miles for 2k but the thing is the guy said the car idles at a red light due to the egr but the thing is I’m not sure if that’s the only problem, I’m kinda nervous cause this would be my first car and I’m only 17 with barely having a few knowledge of cars I’m hoping I don’t get scammed

    Do a video about best cars to rent on Turo! Has to be less than 12 yrs old and less than 130k miles. SUVs and sports cars tend to do the best on Turo, but compact cars can do well in certain areas as well.

    200hp is pretty good considering the Brz/86 now have about similar power.
    You forgot to mention the auto transmission issues and oil burning on the 5th gens. My 98 base auto basically drank oil.
    Still they're amazing cars overall.

      4th gen is best. Best feeling clutch and shifter and the front end is amazing. This car is all about balance. I think it is best ti just be satisfied with it as stock. Choose a lighter car to mod if racing is your goal. As is it is a great feeling very fun car. If you want torque or to race get a c5 z06 or something similar. This car is best just enjoyed as is. In the 3rd and 4th gears it is a blast.

      I have a 94 F20b swap with pro2 cams 2640 lbs and 230 whp.
      My 93 vtec lude is turbo making 305 on 91 pump gas on a super conservative tune. Small turbo. Both have suspension setups.

    Yo return comment. I own a 2007 Acura TSX. I probably wouldn't have found this car if I didn't watch his video on Top Luxury Cars Under 10 Gs. It's a good used car. So my question is, can you do a video specifically covering this car. My main concern is the Transmission Fluid, I've done research and the fluid looks good, I'm thinking I will probably drop the existing fluid and just fill it up with new fluid. What are your thoughts on this. I would like to take care of the car well and keep it for 500,000 miles. Thank you sir

      I had a 98 with the automatic. The only one of those problems I've had was some water leaking in the trunk. Overall it was the best car I've ever owned.

      Brother has a 5th gen. Oil burning and leaking is a huge issue with it, water leaks were fixed by resealing tail lights (roof drains were fine), idles fine?, went through two auto transmissions - then finally got a 5 speed. Random rust everywhere and it’s a CA car.

      if your prelude burns alot of oil its the valve seals, or the vtech solenoid. the gaskets get worn, if you do the matinence your supposed to they last a long time mines at 300,000 km

    There's a clean looking 3rd gen manual prelude sitting at my apartment that flooded in Harvey... it hasn't moved in a year. If I needed/could afford a project car, I'd try to find the owner...

      This may be a bit biased being that I own a G37, but Nissan makes some great V6s. Obviously, they're not quite 2JZ, but the VQ series, the VR series, and the legendary RB engines are really good engines. And I'm sorry, but Ford's V8s can't compare with the LS
