A 6th gen Prelude would be epic!!! I'm currently restoring my 4th gen so needless to say I'm a huge fan of this fine automobile. Thank you for this video.
Would definitely buy a 6th gen prelude if one came out. That said, I love the 5th generation styling as it goes back to the older 80s designs in terms of body lines, tail light aesthetic etc. Luckily in New Zealand, you can pick up a decent condition 5th generation type s prelude with the 220hp h22a for around 3000usd.
I own a 5th Gen SH. 253,000 miles and still runs fine. Someone along the line swapped in an H22A red top. It's also got a custom intake and exhaust. I'm pretty sure it makes the full 217. I won't dare call it a fast car. It probably would have been 20 years ago. But nowadays, when huge horsepower is really cheap, it's just regular traffic. It does turn heads, because 26 years later, it still looks like nothing else on the road. I will dare to say this - if you want something that's fast, fun, and you can actually beat on it without being punished, buy a V6 manual Accord. If you want something that makes the same power, revs more, and can even carry a few friends, buy an 8th gen Civic Si sedan. Both of those are objectively better cars. Parts are more available. They're newer and are generally more reliable and have better features. What I love about my Prelude is the raw driving experience. So if that's what you crave, get a Prelude. Otherwise, V6 Accord or 8th gen Civic Si are better picks for the money.
I once owned a 5th generation Prelude. It’s still one of my all time favourites. Love your content and detailed research of the Prelude history. And I have never thought about the Car names of Honda are/ were music-related, interested point! Thanks.
I'd definitely 110% purchase a 6th gen Prelude if Honda offered it. I absolutely love my 4th gen that I'm currently fully restoring. Thank you for the awesome video!!
And here I am sitting thinking to myself: “GT Content should do a Car History on the Honda Prelude.” I go into UA-cam and what do you know, a Prelude History video. 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 Do a Car History on the Honda Accord please, it did get the Type S trim and older ones are in way sporty.
Definitely agree with you on the Accords. 6-6 Accords are nice, and I guess some people don't even know that Accord Type R's exists lmfao. They deserve some love too ):
Today people really appreciate the prelude. I’m buying my second one next month! Today when you are seen driving one it turns heads I think Honda would be surprised if they used today’s tec to bring it back I almost bet sales wouldn’t be an issue! My youth and I’m 27 love the car especially after the fast and furious scene. HONDA BRING THIS LEGEND BACK!!
Love my clean low miles 5th gen ! Totally underrated but getting some serious love & attention now in 2021! (maybe the combination of red color and performance exhaust is complimenting the modern-classic lines) I also love the handling - Some Honda mysterious magic to make a front wheel drive car handle so well. A sixth gen Prelude? I say Bring it on!
Middle aged guy here, who has been daily driving this Lude since 2002. I have a black 97 SH that I drove hard and didn't really maintain things - yet it's still running fine on almost all factory original parts (except consumables), with no major repairs, and just a lot of smiles in the corners. It's lived outside the whole time, so the clear coat is pretty shot, she does burn some oil, and she could use new shocks, bushing/mounts, but I can't complain given her age. It's insane seeing all the comments about folks always wanting this car or regretting ever selling it....
Thanks for this informative video! I owned 1983, 1986, 1988. 1991 and 1992 Preludes back in the day. Even though they were not fast, they were fun to drive and well built.
I never had a prelude but feel like I know it by heart do to an engine swap of an h22a into my accord cb7. Thank you Gary for taking the time to make all these awesome videos.
I turned 16 in 1990 and so wanted a Honda Prelude. I got a 1980 Pontiac Bonneville instead which I put up half the money for. When I want to college I had a 1980 Honda Accord 2 door hatchback. Loved that car! By the time I graduated and got a professional job my tastes had changed, but I still love the '80's version of the Prelude. Now, I own a 2006 Civic, a 2014 Accord and a 2008 Nissan Frontier. Still, I want a Prelude.
I'm glad you did your research on the 1st Gen B20A and the 2nd Gen B20A. IMO, the 1st Gen B20A is an amazing engine being able to make that much power in the 80s and without VTEC.
The third gen Prelude is still beautiful. Mine had the mouldings/trim paint matched to the body which really set it off and made it look super sleek. Especially lowered a little and some 17" wheels. I miss my Prelude so much. I would love to get my hands on the sistates prelude. If I could afford any car in the world, I would still get one of those first and restore it. Then I'd get my NSX.
Have had my 5th gen over 15yrs and cant see ever getting rid of it even though I have an AP2 sitting next to it in the garage. Both under OEM car covers. Recently found a very rare 1st gen Prelude Solaire convertible in great shape but unfortunately have no room for it inside anywhere.
I just got a 4th gen lude for a couple of hundreds of dolaroos and it came with a H22A1. GODDAMIT! even without maintenance and after being parked for nearly two years it was fast AF!
MrHondablink Awesome set of cars you have. I have the 5th gen prelude. A 2006 350z and an Acura MDX. I want a s2000 but I don’t have the space for one lol
91 si is the best looking car ever made imo . I absolutely love the look of that car . I had one in high school and have always wanted another one but could never find one again when the time would come when I had to get another car.
Great video! The Prelude definitely aged itself out of it's own market, over 3,000 lb girth didn't help while the Civic Si stole the performance show and cost less with a ridiculous aftermarket. Today because of the added weight of side impact protection, SRS/airbags, power everything, and a taller profile to compete with SUV's, the formula isn't working anymore. The used market is gaining popularity for Integra GSR's, older Civic Si's (not beaten on), and even CRX's, but these older cars are missing all the stuff we take for granted today: passenger safety, onboard 'smart' technology, driver assist systems, etc.
Id buy a 6th gen prelude if they brought back mechanical 4ws or much better functioning electronic one than gen 4 had. And also it would be amazing if they brought back the H series design with a modern twist to it maybe. I love my old "backwards" counterclockwise Honda engines. It would be a wet dream if it was all that and AWD.
I have a 2000 prelude base, bought it in 07..was such a nice sport car to drive..i got reps everywhere i go. but due to bad transmission and having 2 cars..i have to sell it. I hope one day if I found a nice clean 5th gen ill differently buy one again.
The prelude is not the fastest car but I just really like the shape of the vehicle, it's sleek. If you look closely, the 5th gen kinda resembles the skyline gtr, and the 4th gen resembles the Toyota supra. I wish they continued the prelude with rwd/awd/v6. Would've been a dream come true. I'm still driving a 5th gen 97 Honda prelude and loving it.
A 6th Gen Prelude ? I'd be the first one to the Dealership. In 1986 I purchased a Metallic Black 1986 Prelude from the Dealership in Nuremberg Germany, the first 16 valve motor on the Autobaun. What fun playing with the Porsche & Beemers at 130-135 mph. There was a popular U.S. Car magazine that did a test drive of a number of different cars on a curvy Road course layout in Germany. A Prelude was included, stated by the driver " We watched the Porsches and the Beamers Bob and Weave as we wondered why? while we sat serenely in our Honda Cockpit . Nothing says it better !
I have always heard it said as Pray-Lude and as such I have always said it that way. Anyway I love the video. I am fixing a 2000 that was originally automatic. I converted it to manual, and am now going through it and de-ricing it. New Suspension, suspension bushings, bushings, fixed all the electrical problems from the prior owner etc. Thanks for the video. I def would get a 6th gen. Also if possible do an Integra video too.
Thank you. Love the content. I had a 79 when I was 19 years old and was completely obsessed by unfortunately the car rotted away. Your so correct in the UK they were rare my friends drove Lancia Beta’s, 3 series BMWs and Capris at the time. I nearly bought the 4th generation when I left college but settled for a 95 civic coupe. And yes I would buy a 6th generation. I hope that Honda brings it back now that they no longer offer the Accord Coupe 🙏
I feel like you're the only one to mention the Prelude SH unique from suspension, but only in a bullet point. The Prelude SH front suspension is the most advanced geometry Hondas used outside the new NSX. I'm putting the Prelude SH suspension on my 93 Accord.
Wow very comprehensive. Having owned a 5th gen Prelude for over 20 years I thought I knew it all. One thing you missed though - there was also a 5th gen SiR S-Spec which had a conventional LSD instead of the TypeSh’s ATTS
I had a 1986 2.0si in blue exactly like the one at 3:01. That was a cool little car! Still running strong with 160,000 miles when I sold it. Started to rust though, which was sad..
Favorite car I've had is a 95 prelude. Without boost the H22 never put down amazing power but it was easily the most fun car I've driven and plenty of power to have fun with even if you won't be dragging anyone. If I wasn't so dead set on 4g swapping a stealth.. I'd be all over a 4th gen prelude. I'd like a 5th gen but the handling difference is very noticeable
Current owner of a 1997 prelude. I would definitely buy a 6th gen prelude if it was produced. I would even trade my 06 350z to help me pay for the 6th gen lol.
I have a 5th gen prelude, and i have to say for the past 18 years it has been a great car, the only complaint i have , is i wished Honda would have put the v6 in this car for the 1997-2001 model years.............The 2.2 works great, and quick as hell on the open highways , but i just prefer the smooth and quick response you get from a v6
I wish Honda would bring back the Prelude. I had a third gen si and I really enjoyed it. Wasn't very powerful, but it's handling I impeccable. Just a very well-being machine.
Honestly I think they got rid of the prelude because they had si coupe, Accord coupe v6 and s2k at the Time. So they wanted to cut the prelude so people would buy si or a v6 coupe or if you had money the s2k.
I'm surprised how how much you had correct on this video. However the 3rd gen b21 engine was also available in non Si States, but the regular ,Si only. That was the main difference between the 2.0Si and just Si models. Had one of those myself a 1991 Si model, for over 3 years and I truly miss it! I also believe they offered carburated 2.0 engines in the 3rd gen preludes.
I wasn’t a car guy in 2000 but knowing that year Honda had their “ super car” line up with Civics, Integra, of course Preludes and the legendary S2000. After that year somethings gotta go. Of all the generation. The 5th is the most original in my opinion and I wish I owned one original with that classic SI Blue. Though that generation is both rear and few like the GT-S(AE86) or the Starion in the States. The mid-late 80s( 2nd generation) is a great collectors car as it is just a relic of that decade of Japanese car market that thrived. GT Content thanks for sharing your knowledge for us and making this rad video.
AWWWW HELL YEAH, I'D BUY A 6TH GEN PRELUDE!!! I've got a 5th gen as my first car and every time I step into that car, it makes me more confident as a driver. Great car to learn handling in and not kill-yourself-quick but quick enough. Love the Prelude. Easy to work on.
i think on a nostalgic level they would sell well if they were brought back some years later, here we are on 22 years from when my 5th gen was purchased
The first gen is the one for me, those hood vents and the taillights perfect. I would love to get my hands on one,, do some tasteful upgrades and thats it.
Great job with the Prelude history! I enjoyed learning about the evolution. I miss my 2000 lude. Can you please make a similar recap for the Acura Legend?
When my 4th gen Si non vtec was stock I never lost to any GSR/LS or even b16s except a gutted bolt on and chipped eg hatch b16a. Now that I’m modded and F20b swapped I beat any and every Si/s2000s and tons of other cars. It’s fast on the track as well, I wasn’t much slower than a modified m3 e46 at streets of willow. All I have is coils and toyo tires on stock brakes suspension wise.
been racing my 5th gen for a year now, it's a VERY underrated car.
I've been watching. Looked like fun.
SH?
FlyinGato how tall are you? And do you fit comfortably in the prelude??
You got the H22a?
Does the weight balance effect the handling compared to the 4th gen?
A 6th gen Prelude would be epic!!! I'm currently restoring my 4th gen so needless to say I'm a huge fan of this fine automobile. Thank you for this video.
Boi I love my 5th gen Prelude. Not the fastest by all means just love the body style
HondasNBimmers hell yeah man gotta love how they drive, handle, and ride. Straight line speed is the least concern about these cars
HondasNBimmers I wanna buy one but idk if I can’t fit how tall are you?
@@lompiscardad8795 im 6'4 and I fit into my 99 SH perfectly.
@@BlueLobster92 Is it your daily driver? How does the fit, finish, and ride compare to modern cars....
@@dobbiesmith8314 i daily drive it. Iv ridden in newer cars that had less room.
I own a 5th gen base model, absolutely love the thing. The gearbox is fantastic. Incredibly fun car to shift and a super strong runner.
I would definitely buy a 6th gen prelude and im 70 retired. Presently driving a 2006 subaru sti. Repairing my 1998 Honda prelude

Well, it looks like there's a concept car...except it's an EV. I love the new design, but this was a car that should have ended up with a K24.
I own a 5th Gen SH. 253,000 miles and still runs fine. Someone along the line swapped in an H22A red top. It's also got a custom intake and exhaust. I'm pretty sure it makes the full 217. Bruh i love the 5th gen style prelude its the perfect car
Always loved the Prelude specially the 5th, its a beauty and kinda rare in my country, hope I'll be able to own one someday.....

Both trims of the 5th gen had H22A, the base was available in both manual and automatic while the SH only manual.
Cool video I loved the car too growing up in the 80's in Toronto Ontario Canada but never owned one unfortunately
I wish Honda would bring back the Prelude. I had a third gen si and I really enjoyed it. Wasn't very powerful, but it's handling I impeccable. Just a very well-being machine.
I would buy it.
4th was the best
I had a 1985 Prelude 2.0 Si, and still have my 1991 Prelude Si 4WS.
Honestly I think they got rid of the prelude because they had si coupe, Accord coupe v6 and s2k at the Time. So they wanted to cut the prelude so people would buy si or a v6 coupe or if you had money the s2k.
8:45 Don't forget rising truck and SUV sales. There just wasn't a need to have another coupe in the lineup.
Great content. Preludes were great cars
I really hope they bring it back I have a 3rd generación is a 91 Dohc i love its lines
GT Content thanks for sharing your knowledge for us and making this rad video.
i love and own the 5th gen it just looks so sleek to me
AWWWW HELL YEAH, I'D BUY A 6TH GEN PRELUDE!!! I've got a 5th gen as my first car and every time I step into that car, it makes me more confident as a driver. Great car to learn handling in and not kill-yourself-quick but quick enough. Love the Prelude. Easy to work on.
Thanks , nice video, I still own and use my 1985 Prelude Si
i think on a nostalgic level they would sell well if they were brought back some years later, here we are on 22 years from when my 5th gen was purchased
Very thorough, well done.
My 5th gen is still a dream car to me personally. I plan to keep mine beside the R35 as long as I'm breathing.
I just bought my dad his dream car!!... 1998 honda prelude type SH in white!
Congrats!
Man you are good this was very entertaining and informative!!! Thumbs up for me!!!
Always loved this. Thank you
When my 4th gen Si non vtec was stock I never lost to any GSR/LS or even b16s except a gutted bolt on and chipped eg hatch b16a. Now that I’m modded and F20b swapped I beat any and every Si/s2000s and tons of other cars. It’s fast on the track as well, I wasn’t much slower than a modified m3 e46 at streets of willow. All I have is coils and toyo tires on stock brakes suspension wise.
