The first man that comes to mind when you said leather bound guitar is Waylon Jennings.
or even Chet Atkins, he had some Gretsch guitars with some leather on them.
Clarence Gatemouth Brown had a partially leather non-reverse Firebird.

I think the guy who did Waylons teles did this leatherwork too. He did a tele for me like one of Waylons and the detail in the patterns almost identical.
Hey Trogly, so the Yui on the Yui Les Paul refers to the fictional character Yui Hirasawa from the anime K-On!, who uses a Heritage Cherry Sunburst LP. The signatures on the guitar write out Toyosaki Aki, who voiced Yui. Funnily enough, there's an official non Gibson branded replica LP for the show's 5th anniversary.

The last one you showed kind of reminds of a signature model I've been seeing for sale with a blue top and natural sides . It isn't to much more in price as that one. Can't remember the artists name.

Correct the model style is based on the 90s era gibson with kluson tuners. The signiture at least is genuine but yeah that's obviously a Chibson. Seen the same issue on bonamassa signed guitars they always use cheap copies to sell at a premium
Just to note I own her signiture but on the precious memories cards.

I love your shows watch them every night and comment I'm 67 years old been playing les Paul's since 1976, but watching your videos it just blows my mind what people and Gibson does to guitars. Unreal!. Last les Paul I bought several years ago was the TV yellow les Paul special. Why? Because I wanted a double pickup les Paul with the p90s. I never had anything but humbuckers before. I like it but not really a pretty guitar to look at

I love that guitar with the leather jacket. As someone that used to tool leather, I can say that that is some first quality leather work and stitching, and I think it would be a shame to remove it. I really like guitars and basses that are road dogs. They have lots of character and history behind them, and they are a lot cheaper.

Justin Johnson recently completed a Tele in leather. Great tones from it. Check it out on his UA-cam page, a magnificent player.
The signature is Aki Toyosaki, the voice actor for an anime girl named Yui that plays a LP Standard 50's, not the singer Yui.

8:06, this was actually signed by the voice actress (Aki Toyosaki) who played the character "Yui" from K-On! (an anime about a music club).

4:30 that is Burl Walnut veneer book matched, burl veneer sides too. The word "Veneer" only means an applied layer it is not sugestive nor stating thickness. As a Luiter and woodworker I might have laid .25=1/32 around the sides but might have used 1/16 on the flat surfaces
That special on the end was wrap tail converted to TOM. Stop bar is way to close. I’ve took that Special Tribute from Dutch Demo Shop just to prove the point that those cheap guitars can be helped. Took lightning bar wrap tail off. Plugged the holes. Installed real historic non wire Gibson ABR-1 and light weight stop bar. Changed harness with my Custom one. Polished the frets and conditioned the fret board. Swapped pickups for boutique set. Result is awesome one peace body one peace neck Gibson that is brought up to it’s full potential. Sounds and plays awesome. Different sounding than my Murphy Lab but good different. Certainly at same level of quality sound. Just different beast as it should be.
Posterity will long appreciate Trogly's documentation of these quirky Gibson instruments like the Texas Jacket and the Burl Melody Maker. Gibson should be paying a stipend towards archival consultancy, for all your efforts.

The TV yellow LP Customs from 2004 look considerably different than that example. 2004s had 1957 specs.. one piece mahogany body, nickel hardware, abr-1, ebony fretboard and the finish is ambered over. The yellowing may be due to age on the 2004 versions I have seen, but the wood grain is more pronounced and really does look more yellow than this version that is featured.
That leather 58’ JR!!!!!!! I have no idea why I like it so much but I would absolutely love to own that. I’m not really big fan of double cut Jr’s especially, this one just really special for some reason
Fantastic tooling and stitching on that Junior. Wow! Having done a bunch of leatherwork in the past and knowing the process and labor involved my hands hurt just looking at it. Lol. Impressive work.
Not just Elvis...Waylon Jennings did it on a tele that probably got more TV airtime than any other guitar every Friday night on the opening credits to the dukes of hazzard!!!
Yui Signature, look at the pickup rings. Epiphone and Import rings are always larger.
And since they are larger you cannot install Gibson rings without the old mounting holes showing.
Once you see that the Epiphone/Import pickup rings are larger it becomes easy to spot a fake/import.

I actually kind of like that TV yellow Les Paul Custom! It's different. The leather bound custom job on the first guitar was pretty cool as well as the Home Improvements on the Les Paul junior double cutaway not bad for a backyard guitar job job

I was gonna say at first that the 'chopped' Explorer was probably originally an 80's Fernandes 'Clapton' one which did come with the wing cut off, but those actually had quite an authentic headstock, too! So it may well be an import Hamer, from the XT series maybe.
It's kinda funny that there are so many "clapton cut" explorers / copies out there considering Eric himself didn't like it. He originally thought it was a prototype, but used it less and less after learning the truth.

8:24 The name is 豊崎愛生- Toyosaki Aki on the top. The signature looks a little off. The signature on the front is a hot mess, it says 唯 "Yui" at the bottom by the cat, but it's missing the Hirasawa 平沢 part if you look closely it's got a missing character and a botched kanji character why? it's not even close to a match for the one on the backplate.
It does say "平沢唯" = Hirasawa Yui on the backplate at the bottom by the cat.
It looks like Aki played the character Yui Hirasawa in the anime K-on!" There is a photo of a guitar that was signed by all the voice actors, and that signature says "ゆい" =Yui on the bottom by the cat face in hiragana instead of using kanji characters.
So it's possibly a Yui Hirasawa K-on! series guitar, possibly with a legit signature, but I've got doubts about all that personally. Those guitars go for about 300 bucks. So it's only over priced by about 2,800 dollars. IMO. :)

Yeah this 60’s melody makers exploded in popularity in recent years, I've see at least few UA-camrs making reviews of the bug shaped double cut recently.. Maybe you could do a guide to those early sixties melody makers models?

The easiest way to tell a Chibson is the size of the pickup rings. Only Gibson uses the narrow sided pickup rings. If they have fat sides, it’s most likely an import. Although there are some people that modify their pickup rings and accidentally order Epiphone rings. Which are still wide like all other imports .
That can also possibly be Yui HIrasawa's signature (or the voice actor for her anyway) who plays a Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's in the anime K-ON! Shame, that it's not an actual Gibson though (pLaY AuTHenTic).
I messaged the 99 LP Special Refin listing to try to see what was up with the fretboard. No response to me though.

TV yellow really does NOT look good with Binding, I think that's the main issue with it looking bad.

8:09 yeah, that one's not Yui (singer), it's from K-ON! the anime about an all girl band. That's a reference to the lead Guitarist, Yui Hirasawa. She uses a Cherry Sunburst Les Paul.
