Power chords ARE one of the easiest things to learn. Maybe not for somebody on their first day or even week, but it's definitely one of the first things many guitarists learn.
usually the power chords aren`t the difficult part to learn, it`s the right hand techniques. the strumming, the muting, picking patterns etc. just because a song uses power chords, doesn`t mean the song is easy to play which was the whole argument of watchmojo and they are completely wrong with that.
Learning power chords was really simple for me personally to learned because I have long fingers. The problem was taking a month to figure out how to play power cords without having random strings ringing out

Understand his age but the song is still being played. If he had listened to the whole song I'm sure he would have picked it up pretty click. The opening riff is legendary but the rest of the song is taken over by lead organ.

I had a friend in high school that may have actually followed this philosophy to the letter, could solo circles around anything in real time but could not be asked to play more than one note at a time.
Haha that’s hilarious. I’m not fantastic at sweep picking and I’m not impressive, but I do it as a warm up exercise and I find that it’s a nice little tool.
House of the rising sun was the first song I ever learned to play by ear. And I did that after only a few months of playing. It is totally worth being on this list. There’s only one chord in there that’s not a day one chord.
Marr is by far my favorite guitarist he shows that you don't need to play as fast as possible or shred like crazy. He keeps it simple, clean and melodic and for me that´s when music is the best.
How. How can this not be more upvoted? Maybe if he spent more time researching the way you actually play smoke on the water instead of making the "I am a god" edit he would know
@@joelnilsson6938Agreed! He could have mentioned that this is the easiest song that nearly everyone plays wrong. Let's start with the fact that it's not even played with a pick.
"House of the rising sun" was the first real song I ever learned to play on guitar. I was thirteen years old, and the year was 1963. If that doesn't date me, then I don't know what!
The way you just switch between chords so effortlessly is overwhelmingly impressive! I say overwhelmingly bc my blood pressure rises over the thought of switching between normal chords on my acoustic guitar lol 😂
A fun fact since you didn’t know the band The Animals, the bassist of said band (Chandler) was Jimi Hendrix’s manager. He got JH out of the US and got him to the UK, gave him the papers and since he was a friend with Eric Clapton he was the reason they met. Years later Chandler steals a whole bunch of JH money.
@@subzero308 I was just going to say that, Chas basically left Jimi because of Michael Jeffries, he and Eric Burdon tried to tell Jimi that Jeffries was no good because he stole Animals money, but this guy here never hearing of the song or the Animals kills me.
Also the notion that he cant be a professional guitar player without knowing those bands is a flawed logic considering those bands didnt need to hear themselves to write their music either lol they just wrote what inspired them same as any musician that has put alot of time into their craft. 14:46 I don’t know who’s editing your videos (you or someone else) but whoever it is is getting better and better with every video!!!👍 Also yes! As a guitar teacher myself, anytime a student of mine (usually the kids) tries to make a genuine argument that it’s not in G minor, I do, in fact, die a little inside.😂
Not sure if you’re being facetious about The Smiths, but Johnny Marr has some of the most beautiful arpeggios ever in rock music. It’s rare to have a pop/rock band have a guitarist that completely steals the show, but Johnny does. Definitely worth checking out some of their other stuff. The Headmaster Ritual is the open E arpeggiation anthem
Yeah that really pissed me off, Johnny Marr is so fucking talented. He didn't play the riff right. He didn't bother to learn the whole song either, the chorus is harder than the verse and main riff, I think. 99% learnt correctly my arse.
I like how Tyler forgot that the 0-3-5 is referring to the G and D strings. He thought he had us beat like a JoJo villain but we all know the truth Tyler.
Also, it's wrong anyway. Blackmore doesn't play the first chord with the open G and D strings. He plays it with the A and D strings on the 5th fret and it sounds way better
House of the rising sun was definitely a must know when I learned to play. There are a million versions of the song and the chord progression is helpful for getting used to changing chords once you can make them.
I have to disagree with the statement that "power chords AREN'T easy to learn" I found them incredibly easy when I was starting and actually inspired me to keep going in a way. The shape of a power chord is natural. The fingers want to go there. And, maintaining the distance between fingers when the fingers naturally sit in that position is easy as well. I was learning all kind of punk songs days after I learned what a power chord was. So, for that reason I kinda disagree.
I agree, I am a huge fan of complex chords, like the ones used in Bossa Nova (the brazilian equivalent to Jazz). But human hands seem like they were made to do power chords
I do agree with that to some degree, but that can also be because you both seem to have the natural talent to do so. For a lot of people who aren't that gifted, they may find power chords hard to do themselves. So I, myself, wouldn't say they are hard or easy, just that some people pick it up naturally and some don't. I picked up power chords fast myself, but I didn't find it too easy to begin with.
For some weird ass reason I actually cannot play power chords cleanly, for some reason I do not understand (and even though im a punk, punk rock fan), I have an easier time playing Bossa Nova chords than power chords. It may be because I can't rotate mi wrist very well, and Bossa chords just feel more natural in my weird wrist, but yeah, I have a hard time with them
Funny that house of the rising sun is one of the first that I learned but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a beginner. I think it sorta depends on the individual learning what songs are easier, kind of depending what chords they can pick up easier.. I started playing before the internet so I learned whatever stuff I could find in guitar magazines and the few people I could learn from. Some were oldies. I think heart of gold by Neil Young was a decent one for me. I felt like I could play something...lol.. Hendrix was my main influence really so I tried to play some of his stuff.. Actually always did pretty good at picking up Hendrix for some reason.. maybe because I wanted it so bad...lol . Another obsessed by the Man... But I mainly learned anything I could from anyone to advanced back then.. I remember getting guitar magazines and the cd that came with it. Mostly licks.. you might learn a song or two if you were lucky but a lot of licks and parts of songs.. and some months weren't as great as others for selection but usually always something to learn. It was what we had and books and cd's or videos . I really don't remember seeing many videos.. You could find books with cd's at music stores.. I feel like I could get much better much quicker these days with available resources. The internet and all.. But you need someone to help you get started at least. Maybe a few people have done it without help but it would be much easier to get going.. Then jamming with people! Even if it's bad at first, it's gonna get your timing more in the pocket.. Sorry for the ramble, just my experience.. As a self taught player mostly...
Dude, I was with you until shitting on the Animals. They were one of the best BI bands of the 60’s, and the singer Eric Burden was an absolute beast. “We’ve gotta get out of this place”, “Don’t let me be misunderstood” are both great songs.
As far as riffs go, Cocaine is one of the easiest I know. But, to play it correctly is a whole different thing. Same goes with many of the songs on this list. Playing them correctly isn’t easy, even wonder wall. Hardly anyone gets the right chords and strumming.
I have to disagree about power cords. For me, they were the easiest thing to learn and actually play well consistently. In fact, they are still about all I can play haha.
See that's my problem with most of these youtube guitarists. They talk about and amire a lot of guitarists who I don't care about and the ignore a Johnny Marr or Steve Cropper or Brian Setzer
to be completely honest about Power Chords, I learned them pretty quickly thanks to my years of playing Guitar Hero. You know how to combo Green and Yellow together for chords in that? basically the same premise, but the string you use the other finger on is below the one your first one is on. that’s basically how I learned it.
@@MaquiladoraIII Some girls are bigger than others is just magnifique too. I felt obliged to dislike the video as soon as he said This charming man was a "nothing song" and said he could have played perfectly with 13 more seconds invested into it. Highway to Hell: “Do I mean nothing to you?” Thunderstruck: “What am I, chopped liver?” Up Around The Bend: *Has entered the chat* La Grange: *knows their worth. Needs no praise*
So the irony of the “Smoke On The Water” thing, is that for being the “most played beginner riff” or whatever, in reality, no one knows how to play it. Even when they do manage to play it in the right key, it’s still wrong most of the time. Everyone plays 0-3-5 on the D and G strings simultaneously, and so on, but the real way that Blackmore played it was 5 and 5 on A and D, then 3 and 5 across D and G. Basically everyone plays the whole riff on D and G strings, and then they go “this is how its really played”. Wrong. Everything is played on D and G strings, except the G chord, which is played on 5th fret A and D strings. Theres no open strings being used in the whole riff.
The reason Ritchie played it that way is because he plucks the strings on the opening rather than using a plectrum, he has said most people get this bit wrong.
Actually, he plays the riff in MANY spots. sometimes he goes clear up to strings 6 and 5, and does 10 8 10, 10 8 11-10, 10 8 10, 10 8. Truth is, you play it at whatever spot sounds best.

I mean, I have the same thought process. If I can't play a song right away it's not an easy song. At the very least it's mildly intermidiate, but not you've been playing for a month easy. This doesn't mean I play really well though, it just means the song is indeed harder than it would seem to others
Johnny Marr is an extremely respected and successful guitarist with some of the most beautiful melodies written, he's very humble and all around just a great guy. None of his work that he did with the smiths should ever deserve to be called a "nothing song". Come on man.
The arpeggio pattern is tough for beginners. It also has a lot of chords compared to, say, TNT. So I agree with this assessment. A lot of the complete noobs who learn HOTRS as their first song only can play the chords, and play them badly.
It was one of my first, however it took a few steps because that strumming can be pretty tricky for a beginner (especially in 6/8). I had to start with just regular strums, then went to arpeggio picking and then finaly to the correct pattern
If AskMojo do include a version of _House of the Rising Sun,_ then why not plump for Dylan's take on his debut album, as it's the same chords but is strummed, not an arpeggio.
No one forgets their first; mine was Wonderful Tonight, followed by Stairway of course, then Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard, some Kinks tunes. The House of the Rising Sun, was after Hotel California... I didn't have an electric at the time, it was a Spanish Classical something or another, this was pre-internet days, spent hours in guitar stores reading music books since that was the only way (aside from by-ear) to learn new tunes, those were fun times...

He never implied that they’re “nothing” artists. Is just that he hasn’t heard those particular artists/songs probably because that’s not what he usually listens to. "Let it be written, I am the king, I have spoken, goodnight." I loved that whole bit there. But SLIGHTLY was disappointed at the missed opportunity to say "let it be written, let it be done" lol
House of the Rising Sun is actually a lot harder than it looks especially the timing in between each note. Hilton Valentine chose to pick certain strings and took his hand off the fretboard in-between chords, which means the last note in each section is actually 'out of key'. I suppose the easy way to play it is like Tyler demonstrated but even that is still tricky for a total beginner. To play it like the original recording, you'd need a fair bit of practice to get it right and some professional guitarists can't even play it perfectly.

usually the power chords aren`t the difficult part to learn, it`s the right hand techniques. the strumming, the muting, picking patterns etc. just because a song uses power chords, doesn`t mean the song is easy to play which was the whole argument of watchmojo and they are completely wrong with that.
My problem was I was 15 and my hands weren't full grown yet. So it was a stretch for me.

I have to disagree with the statement that "power chords AREN'T easy to learn"
I found them incredibly easy when I was starting and actually inspired me to keep going in a way.
Yeah, I mean sliding them was difficult.
But literally a week at most and you can slide them keeping them in alignment.
I would say there much easier chord shapes than power chords. I mean most open chords are easier than power chords

Yup, fourths played upstrokes all the way, with plectrum obviously

My thoughts exactly. That's how it sounds when Blackmore plays it.
Yeah it’s just inverted power cords on the D and G string.
Correct. He also played it with his fingers.
BOom Tyler, schooled by a 16 yr old kid thats only been playing guitar for a handful of years!
Are you kidding me, the animals are amazing! We gotta get outta this place, when I was young, don’t bring me down, sky pilot, see see rider, it’s my life and how can anyone forget don’t let me be misunderstood!! They have so many great songs! It’s time for Tyler to explore, some of these older groups, that had powerful music!
Amazing, no.
Decent at best, yes.
They were sick, so heavy for they’re time too (my observation)
@@OkayyyIGetIt they are literally one of the most influential bands ever. Watch what Brian Mays says about them
“At least not guitar aficionados like you and I” *nods in agreement even though only picking up a guitar once in elementary school and never again after that*
I play guitar a little bit. Very limited to a few songs and instrumentals but the first one I taught myself was Queen crazy little thing called love. Rythym guitar section.
His comments on The Smiths and The Animals, talk about self absorbed and pretentious. If you haven't heard of them that means they're "nothing" artists? That's embarrassing.
He never implied that they’re “nothing” artists. Is just that he hasn’t heard those particular artists/songs probably because that’s not what he usually listens to. From what I’ve seen in his videos, he’s more into technique based guitar songs than on punk. And there are many people who like rock music and have never listened to The Smiths, the first time I did was on my rock n roll history in college class a couple years ago
@@georgi1310 so what does he mean at 10:00 ?
He said, it was a nothing song, as in, to him, there was nothing in the song that stood out to him
He's probably trolling all you Smiths fans because so many were upset in the other video. I doubt he's disrespecting them on purpose. He just knows it's easy to get a rise out of you guys.
he's just trolling people like you who like to get offended when their favorite band get dissed. It's just his opinion and I find a lot more fresh than people who praise everything just because the fear of backlash from fans
I figured 'Come as you are' would be there rather than 'Teen Spirit'
tuning down to match the record is not a beginner move but otherwise i agree
Come
Sing at the same time...
For me it would be about a girl.
@@davius1911 Yeah, but Kurt plays it live in standard tuning sometimes, so the tuning doesn't really matter
When you're a beginner, no song is easy. Also c'mon, power chords are easy to learn
It is easy to learn but hard to master
@@raywcksn well said. Everyone can learn basic power chords. Not everyone can make them sound good or use them properly.
9:22 That's a good point, because sometimes when I'm just jamming I accidentally end up playing the riff to Brain Stew, so of course it's so easy I stumbled upon it
But disappointed that you've never heard of The Animals and "House of The Rising Sun"
I have heard it plenty never cared to learn it same for the other song . But I can Play the whole Steve Vai Crossroads Guitar duel both parts . Does the cover The Animals and the Smiths songs . We all learn what speaks to us not whats easiest took me about 7 months to learn the Crossroads Duel because it interested me The Animals and Smiths do not ......
@@DeadShred9 I just think he meant it as surprising because of Tyler’s knowledge of music and guitars and that was a pretty popular song so it was odd for him to not know it.
Right? I thought this is the most popular song in the world history... Especially the guitar pattern
Play seven nation army, easy. Sing and play, is a completely different story
Same with TNT
Also Come As You Are

"How dare you compare the smiths to the animals"
Honestly, for me, one of the first songs I learned with a barre chord was Have You Ever Seen the Rain by CCR. It's a good song with simple chords, that after a few months of playing, you should be able to master easily
johnny marr??! disrespecting the smiths and yeah 99% right, it’s a hard riff
WatchMojo: “this is probably the hardest song on the list”
Also WatchMojo: *puts it towards the end of the list*
"Let it be written, I am the king, I have spoken, goodnight."
I loved that whole bit there.
