With something like that Quilt Purple top, the left side is the bottom of the right side, so the wood grain/quilt reflects the light in opposite directions. That will typically change the brightness and sometimes the hue even though it is the same color, the light is reflecting in the opposite direction as its mate piece (bookmatched) on the opposite side. You really should take a tour of Gibson and film it, I believe it would give you a lot of insight.
Speaking of Koa tops I saw either on Sweetwater or Musician's Friend that there's an Epiphone now being sold with a Koa top for around $800 or $900. Did not look to bad. I think I'm on board with you on the factory burst. Although them Koa tops aren't bad looking either.
Hey Trogly, just pointing out, that heartwood is still curly maple, it’s a maple top. All trees have sapwood and heartwood, and with most trees the heartwood is the sought after part, walnut heartwood is that pretty brown, where the sapwood is a lighter color. Maple is unusual where it’s the light colored sapwood that’s generally sought after while the darker heartwood isn’t. I work in a shop that deals almost exclusively with Birdseye and Curly maple. Our instrument clients buy exclusively white meat sapwood, which I always find kind of a shame cause I love the look of the darker heartwood, which also is often very heavily figured. That being said, maple heartwood is a lot less stable and if cracks develop in a board odds are it’s going to be in the heartwood.
Is it just me or does the guy who does these videos mostly cares of the aesthetics of the guitar for dollar resale value over actual playability of the damn thing? I've seen other videos and it seems playability is not his main point of interest, seems to me he cares more how it looks, I find that a bit odd.
@@marioguti9887 thats common when dealing with gibson-fanatics, since they never play as good as for example japanese Ibanezes or ESP's, american Fenders or other high end brands and/or boutique guitars : )
@Myke Fuller Do you mean in regards to guitars or in regards to wood? Generally yes there will be a price difference, it all depends on what’s considered desirable out of a given species of tree and the quality of wood harvested in it. To use the example again of walnut, where the heartwood is sought after, a piece that’s pure, clean heartwood is going to fetch more than a piece that has areas of sapwood mixed in, or knots, or twisted grain etc. lots of factors contributing to that. The area I work in, figured maple, has all those factors and then the quality of figure to consider as well.
The last one shown was absolutely mind-blowing. I think that was the most awesome quilt top that I have ever seen in my entire life. And to top it off with my favorite color just made it the best Les Paul I've ever seen, bar none. I would kill to have that guitar. Simply unbelievable.
(1:52) This Custom IS a maple topped guitar. The term “heartwood” refers to the inner wood of the tree, where the wood is hardest. The layers of the tree are: bark, sapwood, and heartwood (concentrically). There is a mild to strong color difference between sapwood and heartwood.
When I see nice grain finishes all I think about is PRS. Les Paul Customs look so good in a strong wood grain finish but they’re always painted over which isn’t always a bad thing but I prefer the natural grain look. I always enjoy seeing these types of Les Pauls (minus the tie-die) but I just can’t bring myself to spend 5k on a guitar and it not be a PRS anymore, 10 years ago I’d be buying one of these, now days I’ll just appreciate from afar.
The Tie-Dye really tickled my 90s nostalgia. To have taken the stage of an outdoor festival playing that guitar would’ve made you the coolest. Of course the purple guitar is beautiful and elegant, but it doesn’t feel like you would throw it into the back of a van to go rock some small sweaty club.
Mr. Trogly, the term "heartwood" refers to where in the tree the wood was cut from, not it's type. Still maple (probably), just cut from the very center of the log.
The ''Heartwood'' custom is still a Maple top, it just includes heartwood, which is the inner wood that is darker compared to the sapwood. Dark Walnut is also heartwood where the sapwood from Walnut is very light in colour.
Hey, that purple beastie is where I live, Ottawa, Ontario Canada! Probably not a price I would pay, but it might be fun to go down and check it out...maybe get a few photos of it to see if that difference in shading is there...
I have a similar to that '68 Custom Reisue M2M Factory Burst Les Paul but with gold hardware and is a bit deeper, darker red. To me is the most beautiful LP, one piece honduras mahogany and neck, awesome flamed maple top, ebony fretboard, real mother of pearl inlays and is loaded with classic 57's sweet!
I love Cherry Sunbursts, but the factory, aka tobacco sunbursts are sweet, too. I love the plastic, Kluson-type tuners, too. They feel much warmer than metal and they don't tarnish like gold tuners. I don't even mind the "snot green", as haters like to call it. I would like to see the rainbow on the back with a regular, flame burst or black top. First one was my favorite.
I got one of those studio custom swirls from 2011 in a green burst kinda look. Never really see people cover them on UA-cam beside when they first came out
G'day Trogly, looked at many of your presentation's. Your preoccupation with LPs is amusing and a little bit scary, don't change a thing. The exuberence you show in all your segment's is refreshing and, I think, welcome. This is particularly noticable in this offering. My only claim to guitar notoriety was the ownership of a 68 tustom tele I bought in 1976 (complete with 60w Right amplifier) for $160 and sold on in 1990 for $900. I still think about wrist slashing everytime I remember this. Your format is good and I wish you success in the future. Cheer's from Australia. P.S I fallowed the fate of my teli, it ending up back in the USA. It sold for a lot of money.
This is the equivalent of watching high quality guitar porn where guitars I will never own or get to play are shared by Sir Troggers for mere mortals like me to appreciate and enjoy. Having said that, I love all my much cheaper guitars in my harem and they make sounds just as good and unique as guitars 10 times their value. It's a great time to be playing and collecting guitars and getting to appreciate the "top shelf" of my dreams is a regular pleasure thanks to this channel.
I totally agree about factory burst and cherry sunburst..I'm not a big fan of the cherry sunburst but factory burst just hits different..I love vintage burst tho
The shop in Germany had this 68 Custom with another Top. It sold a few days ago. I wanted to buy it but I decided to buy Mick Jones Les Paul (2008) at another shop. However the first one they had was even more beautiful. It had a far more interesting top (kinda like two face and very alive even on photos). Many Greetings from Germany!
Trogly, is it worth it for me to pick up one of the new gibson exclusives 70’s V in olive drab? I see limited release and I don’t recall them releasing the V in drab previously although I do remember the special and classics being released previously. If there’s any desirability behind the V I might pick up up but I need another opinion. Thanks my man!
Thanks for sharing my Chai Mist LP. FYI, the pickguard is transparent and they painted the underside… which really makes me question how they matched the top so well. Cheers Trogly.
Watching this episode has me wondering about the manufacturing process. For example, what happens first? Binding or staining? I think it’s probably binding first, but wouldn’t it be easier to stain first then bind? To prevent bleed from the stain getting on binding? Also, how much control over flaming do they have. I mean obviously you can’t take a generic piece of wood and make it look amazing just by flame treating it, but with a good piece, can you make a significant improvement? How much does it depend on the natural quality of the wood selected and how much on handling? 80/20 or more like 60/40? Just curious 🤔. Thanks for the interesting content. I learn something new every day and have fun doing it. Even if I’ll never afford any of these collectors grade examples.
I don’t know if you know this, but I love les pauls. Yes I and anybody who enjoys playing guitar can play and enjoy any guitar, but my lp standards are my favorite. I love making a beautiful instrument feel like it’s a part of you and like you know your instrument inside out. Love em !!
Never understood the raised pick guard. Also Les Paul asked Gibson "Why the rosewood fret board?" He said they told him, "Your fingers show up better." To which he just shrugged. Like the R-7 Koa.
I love quilt tops, and that purple is incredible! If that was a 57 or 68 reissue it would be perfect. And I am lucky enough to have a Koa top 68 reissue M2M.
Big no on the tye dye not enough acid in the world for me to buy that. Purple eeh and I don't like gold hardware regardless of how it looks with the color. I do like the black pick ups and I'd take P90 over most other pick ups. Blues is the music I like most. The natural finish are usually very good looking and as far a burst I like iced tea and tobacco but that first one is exceptionally nice. Great job as always.
Great show Trogly, I love the Koa, man thats beautiful. The purple 💜 is pretty awesome also and the tie died one is growing on me, the technic that was used with the cloth is very interesting 🤔 and your right that would be cool if they continued that on the front of the head stock and did something cool with the
I'm not normally a fan of black guitars (I play mainly in metal bands and so they've become kinda boring to me) but that one looks really classy with the super 400 inlays. They play off the chrome really well.
Love your videos. When I am in need of Les Paul porn fix, I go to this channel. You have shown some amazing Les Pauls. How ever, $8k is a bit too deep for my pockets. A few years ago I picked up a used Les Paul that caught my eye. As soon as I grabbed it, I knew it was a keeper. My guess is that someone bought it with the intention of learning how to play. The guitar looked brand new and even the case lock was still set to all zeros. So, for $599 I grabbed a 2005 Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded T. My Fender Stratocaster is now my backup. So, for those Troglidites drooling for a Gibson Les Paul, there are affordable Les Pauls out there, with Burstbucker Pros and old school wiring. A Faded T may not be pretty but, it plays and sounds like that $8k Custom... Back to the show.
there is the one - and then others others are different some are the same compare the others with the first ones and put them into order then compare them again and work out which ones are different once you have worked out the differences and put them into order then you can go to bed and have a sleep then what is great is that tomorrow you can do it all again...

That natural heartwood is a beauty. I’m a sucker for natural finishes.

It's still Maple.
I've had my eye on the spangly purple one bottom left at 6:33 for a while, I look at it the same way Wayne looks at the white strat :)

That 57 Koa wood reissues color really reminded me of my 69 es-335 walnut it’s very similar in color. It looked like a walnut LP. Really cool.
Does the purple Les Paul come with a matching suit?
I REALLY LOVE Koa tops with natural backs! Thanks for asking. Wish I could afford one….

reallly like that purple LP

I think a aged vintage burst would be even cooler than the factory burst..idk why more ppl don't make a exclusive like that
