What? How can you NOT LOVE a 3 pickup Flying V???? I am sorry that I missed out on that one, I guess when you snooze you lose! That is a mod guitar that you need to review and demo for sure Austin.
EMGs are actually some of the best pickups for clarity. Everyone thinks they are some crazy “death metal” only pickup. The reason metal heads use them is for their clarity. You can’t dump a ton of gain on just any pickup. It turns to mush. EMG’s sound great on clean. They actually have fairly weak magnets and are really low output. But that’s why they have a built in preamp and require a nine volt battery. You want a great metal tone? Use lower output pickups. Took me some time to figure that out. There are a few exceptions. But generally, a PAF like a Gibson 57 classic sounds killer with heaps of gain. They hold their shape and don’t get flubby like some high output pups. Now if you’re just playing with amp distortion, that’s different. You may want an invader or a Black Winter.
The late Gary Moore used them on a fair amount of Blues songs. Most notably, they were in his signature Charvel he used on "The Loner"
Interesting. I started playing only 4yrs ago & the songs I play mostly are from Hendrix to hair metal. I was never into the death metal, I don't like my guitar work heavier than what Metallica can put out.
I've got about 6 guitars - P90s, passive humbuckers, single coil, etc, but I've been REALLY impressed lately with Schecter's lineup. I want to get one with and Evertune, and pickups could be either EMG or Fishman Fluence, however that's spelled.
Any active pickup you'd suggest for a classic/heavy rock beginner making the leap to active? It'll either be a hard tail or an Evertune, and I'm more of a Metallica fan than I am a Satriani fan.
I agree with you, David Gilmour even used EMGs. I just personally would prefer a PAF style pickup or a P90. The EMGs or Fishmans don't sound bad by any means, they just lack personality to me.
I wonder if that guitar was originally built for Zakk Wylde but was finished after his endorsement deal ended.
@@ianfurqueron5850 Probably not. I'm guessing they chose EMGs because they had an extra one and the guitar can be used either through a regular guitar amp or plug it in direct like a traditional acoustic electric.
The acoustic with the active pickup looked great. I've done a similar thing with my Ovation bowl back. I put a miní humbucker and a gold foil pickup in it with coil tap and active circuitry. Also removed the bridge and replaced it with a floating bridge with roller saddles and I put a bigsby on it. I put another output on it so it now has stereo outputs. It still has the piezo system in it. Turned out great.
@Timdoeswork @Timdoeswork I'm not on UA-cam or Instagram at the moment. I'm thinking of starting a channel because I build and service guitars. I'm currently working on an Ironman guitar with built in Raspberry Pi based digital electronics and eventually a speaking JARVIS system that tells you when it's plugged in and what the volume and tone levels are when you adjust linear encoders.

I've been considering doing something similar to that jumbo with the emg to a little 1/2 size first act acoustic that ive had kicking around, though with a dog ear P90 instead of an emg
The Brazilian dream #88 was in a musician friend demo video. I dig the finish of those. Sad they were/are so expensive. Great video as always!

Yea best for last for sure, I did love the Flying V and thought it the best of the Cosmic Stews personally! That was a good price on the EMG monster I think.

Humbuckers on an acoustic sound great, very different sounding.
The first Flying V didn't have a pickup selector so one of the four nobs has to be a rotary pickup selector...btw
Hey, that Faded Series triple-pickup Flying V has a 6-way chicken head pickup selector! I had commented on an prior episode that a 6-way switch would be a good way to have all the desirable 3-pickup combinations without the brain surgery of individual volume knobs, etc.
I was REALLY sure that Trog had bought that Acoustic with the EMG. hahaha
Cool Lagoon does it for me.

Years ago I saw a Les Paul for sale that had the same blue/green style finish on a quilt top, the back and sides were Korina.
That was almost 25 years ago I saw that guitar and I still think of it often.

I really want that 57 reissue in candy green so bad. Love the thickest 57 neck and reissues with a modern finish.
30 years ago I’d have dreamt of owning that “obnoxious” LP 70’s cherry sunburst at 6:48.
FYI, The Faded series Flying Vs were made from 2002-2012 with the earlier years being the most sought after due to the crescent moon inlays with ebony fingerboards. When they started going with the rough sanded wood grain finishes and using cheaper hardware is where the value isn't as good as the first few years. Still a very cool guitar with super hot pickups!
The Sparkling Lime one was my pick of this bunch - not that I want or need another guitar, but that was the only one that grabbed my attention.
if i was able to afford that sg with the "butt repair" i would buy it in a second that looks beautiful, and i think it'd look even more beautiful with a B5 bigsby, even though i don't personally like the look of the B5s

Hey man, reconsider! Buy that acoustic with the EMG on it - and put that Floyd Rose whammy bridge on it! And then demo it! My only disappointment about this vid was that it didn’t Already have that whammy! That was the coolest guitar of this vid: you definitely saved the best for last.
There is an EMG acoustic pickup that some acoustic guitars have. Some people have used it to get a little distortion on their acoustic guitars (I am pretty sure I saw Derek Trucks using it for electric slide guitar during a performance on TV a couple years ago), and Zakk Wylde used one on his acoustic guitars for a lot of distortion.
The cosmic V is cool.
I'm salivating over the '57 Green top(?), Over the gold. I love gold-tops, really loved a copper-top I had, but the Green smacked me.
I Don't even like green.
That fuzzy wood grain looks like it could be the quarter sawn profile. A good thing.
Heck Les Paul's sold so bad at one time they stopped making them, so ya looking back at a failure that wasn't in the long run.
The Brazilian dream was a commercial flop, but so was the original burst. I've played one of these and they sound and play fantastically. A very high quality guitar.

I bought the ebony tribute, it has interesting features. It says it has a slim taper mahogany neck, different for a tribute. 496R and 500T pickups, top hat knobs. I like the gold hardware but would like to swap out the purple rings for flat black ones. I think it's those purple rings that's making the gold hardware look off. And it looks like the FB dots are transparent black. Anyway I hope this guitar screams when I get it 😃
That candy green finish at 9:10 was tempting. It would have been better if it were paired with gold hardware. “Green for the money, gold for the honeys!”

Those Les Paul Deluxes need 3 piece maple necks with volutes.
The 50s Goldtop P-90 looks a little funny. The neck pick up looks like it’s recessed below the belly carve. Maybe that’s just the way that it’s screwed down right now.

I love what Gibson's doing with these. I mean, most of them aren't my cup o'tea, but the Sparkling Lime LP Junior is beautiful. It's about $1000 overpriced, but why complain. I'll pay a premium to buy "local", since I know our neighbors' time is worth more than someone in China or Indonesia. I like to buy American built guitars mostly, since I consider that 'local' (close, I'm canadian) & I like the resale value. I was never a fan of most Gibson burst colors. I respect the '59 Les Paul burst of course, but I loved the Modern collection Gibson released in '17/'18. The ones with the aluminum-look square cases.
I only started playing in 2018 & my tastes have changed wildly - but one collection Gibson had in the last 4yrs, I can't find anymore & I've wanted at least one guitar from the collection since. I have pics of them on my PC, but can't find them online anywhere. The collection was Les Pauls, Standards I think, 4 of them, all solid, pastel colors. Black, Yellow, Red, Orange. Has anyone seen them since, and I'm guessing they're like $8k by now...

Dark redburst is a cool color. But sadly, it seems to have been a color used on loads of cheap import guitars from the '60s and early '70s. So people regard it (unfairly) in that light. Or that's my opinion, anyway.

Honestly though, the Gibson Demo/Mods shops are like physical NFTs. I’d hate to reduce it to something so fleeting and meaningless, but these axes are unique and do hold, if not appreciate, their value

Gibson needs to just stop while they are somewhat ahead and keep their historical legacy, it was easy to be number one with no competition back in the day but there's actually brands that know what they're doing now, companies that get it...
