📚 Description: The Les Paul Kraken was a Gibson 2019 NAMM Show Display piece that got people talking! Musician's Friend was the lucky dealer that got to purchase this one and then who knows where it ended up after that! It has some pretty interesting specs like a hickory fretboard! The Kraken motif is very cool on the "map" theme this guitar has. Art Guitars done right!

The two strap buttons signifies the things you would tie the rope off on when on a old time ship. For the sails and whatnot.
Mooring bollards.
came here to say this
Yeah, I think you’re right. Also called “cleats.”
Now that I’m thinking about it variations on this are still used on sail boats. They just look a bit different but same principle.
yeah they look like pilings for a big ship.
What Trogly and others don’t realize is that the map on it, when interpreted correctly, will lead you directly to the location of the one ‘58 Moderne that was ever made.
Hey, I watched “The Goonies.” I know a treasure map when I see it!
Finding an one of the original Moderne would be pretty awesome, if there is one!
And yeah, it could be a map for that, or could lead to the secret burial site of all their unsold NOS Firebird X guitars!
Lol, nice allusion!
MUST HAVE!!! I've always wanted a nautical-styled guitar, and Gibson nailed it with this one. I don't own a Gibson, but I would definitely try to buy one of these. So cool...
Yeah, these things are gorgeous. Although Gibson could have really taken this over the top with bronze or copper hardware. Still, very nice.
The double strap buttons go with the nautical theme as boat cleats for hooking up boat to the dock
oh yeah youre probebly right :)
Agreed. That’s the first thing I thought!
The double strap buttons are the chocks or bits used for the morning lines of the ship. What you wrap the rope around when tied up.
The strap buttons look like mini cannons sticking out of a Les Paul ship. I think there's 4 more in the front and 8 more in the back, you just can't see them because the mini hatches are closed.... I might be high. Ahoy mateys!
Share the wealth!
Thank you for the closeup of the creative chartwork, showing the "Sea of Tonality". Cool!
"Sea of Tonality" NICE
The two strap buttons represent the old style dock cleats to tie off the ships in port. The two cleats were for large ships, for small boats they use the tee cleats. 😁
I'm pretty indifferent to Les Pauls (more of a Strat guy) but this thing is awesome. I love the ridiculous looks and the hickory fretboard. Gibson should try thinking out of the box more often. Thanks for this one, Austin.
The only problem with them thinking out of the box is every thought will cost another $1000 , to already overpriced guitars!😉

@@TheJeffbarrett I can completely relate to this post, but I can go one layer deeper… I started playing just after middle school, as I was entering high school. Met my best friend in high school. He’d already been playing for years. Here’s where the relevance comes in. I am a HUGE fan of Fender instruments while my best friend was just in love with Gibson Les Pauls (specifically he wanted a Les Paul Custom in white with gold hardware), and coincidentally he just happened to share a birthday with one Lester Polsfuss aka LES PAUL, while I share a birthday with LEO FENDER!! That’s some next level Providence from the universe showing that we were either meant to be best friends, or possibly rivals, or maybe both. Unfortunately, lost my non-blood related brother 12 years ago on an Easter Sunday. Now my absolute least favorite day of the year :(
I would take a "crack" at that Krakken Les Paul! It's a thing of beauty! I love all of the old timey Vibes to it and that black Gibson logo on the headstock looks old worldly. And the map work and the Krakken artwork are out of this world. Thanks for sharing this one Austin!
Jackson was the 7th U.S. President. I think he used 10's and .73 Dunlop picks.
Greetings Austin!
This is a very interesting special edition Les Paul guitar. Black Mother of Pearl would have been a nice touch on the headstock, but the way it was done fits more closely with the nautical map theme.
Just as Carmen Rago has indicated, the use of paired strap buttons connects to the nautical theme of the guitar, and represents where rope lines would be lashed, usually in a figure-eight fashion.
It is pretty awesome how it looks, I would likely be reluctant to play it much though, since it has already been distressed, however, the wear and tear of use might be difficult to tell from the way it appears when it left the factory.
Thank you for posting these videos!
Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️🙂
I love this channel. Learning so much cool things and seeing such a vast array of stunning guitars.
I think the double strap buttons are supposed to resemble cleats that you tie your boat to
Trogly is the HOUSE!!!!
I STILL want that Namm burst you had. That was the prettiest burst I’ve ever seen!
The dual strap buttons represent rope posts that you’ll find on a pier used to tie down a ship when they dock.
Bitts for line. Rope on a ship is wire. Don’t mean to be pedantic, just spent a lot of my life haze gray and underway.
The “cleat” style strap buttons have the added benefit of making the guitar less likely to fall over when you lean it against the wall. Tom Anderson guitars have two strap buttons on the bottom for this reason.
My guess is the double strap buttons resemble the thing you attach the rope
on the sails to, don’t know what it called tho…
CLEAT!
Bollard
Buy far the best Art style guitar I’ve seen from Gibson, tastefully done and has continuity from body to head stock, the only thing I would have changed would be the fretboard I’d have gone for an oak board to further emphasise the ship’s timber vibe.
The double strap buttons are to mimic cleats on a dock that you wrap the lines from a ship around when berthing the ship.
the double strap buttons reminds me of a docking cleat that ships would use...pretty cool.
I’m just guessing, but perhaps the double strap buttons are meant to represent cleats that sailors would secure mooring ropes with? Truly a fancifully themed guitar.
Exactly.
My thought, too.
you beat me too it. that is exactly what it represents imo.
Bitts, not cleats. Close enough though. When they are in a pair you remember they are bitts, because they rhyme with...try to forget it now.
@@kilhattrick cleats have horns, like the boatswain himself!
That Kraken is amazing! I like the dark the best. I'm assuming the double strap button thing is a reference to a cleat that you use to secure lines on a boat or ship.
Love the 'Sea of Tonality' at 2:12 !
I think it needed a brass truss rod cover. And maybe aged tuner tips. I totally love the logo. And yes… A little more imagination with the volume and tone knobs.
As Carmen Rago wrote, the 2 pairs of strap buttons represent ship or dock cleats for tying the boat.
"Here be dragons"or "hic sunt dracones" in latin actually used to be written on maps (along with dragon illustrations) in uncharted areas.
I love that Kraken with the back binding...the over sprayed one with white binding...eh, not so much. That Koi PRS is a definite taker too!
That's exactly what I was going to say the two posts remind me of the cleats you have to tie the boat up with so that's what they're for yeah the first one's a really beautiful guitar and the second one's a little too dark to enjoy the kraken so I think one between the two would probably be the best like you said I enjoyed the video
The double strap buttons mimic the tie off on the dock where you tie up a ship.
The cleat strap knobs are cool
The NAMM 59’ reissue you got had an amazing top. I like the top on that PRS too
I actually had a plan to build a Kraken Les Paul a few years ago. I didn't have plans to do it anything like this, but I really like how they did it.
Austin the double strap posts reminds me of cleats to tie a boat off at dock.I wouldnt be surprised if that wasnt the reason.
Bollard
Honestly, the darker Kraken Les Paul I’d take over the brighter one. The map has more mystery to it, and it has this vibe like it belongs on a cursed pirate ship. Plus, the subdued look on the Kraken design is wicked. It’d also give me reason to go up to people while playing it and say “do you fear death, Jack Sparrow?”
Amber knobs work great on the darker one & I think would look fantastic on the first one
The two strap buttons are probably supposed to represent bollards/cleats on a ship. Used to tie dock lines around
The kraken looks awesome
Love it .I have a vintage globe. That's awsome
I love the Kraken. I think I like the prototype's Gibson logo better but, I really like the old-timey one too.
Cool guitar Trogly. I presume the double button represents the bitts used by mariners to secure the hawsers (I.e, the ropes)
Did you notice that one of the "islands" on the top (by the bottom edge in between the volume buttons) is a Gibson headstock?
Trogly! The double strap buttons remind me of bitts - the metal structures to tie up ropes in ships! Hope this info helps!
The strap buttons looks like the tie down for sail boat.
Ok, that is pretty cool, and something I wouldn't have thought of doing. Works great, but I would have made the harpoon facing the Kraken, and perhaps put a Scrimshaw inspired design on the back. But, all in all, it's pretty awesome as it is. Thanks
Prototype one with the old pirate style Gibson logo would be how I would want it.
Did you not notice that one of the islands on the map by the control knobs is shaped like a Gibson headstock with the corner broken? even has thunder buttons.
Thanks for pointing that out. 😂
Looks great! But do wish the fret board was color matched. And the Andrew Jackson les Paul was very VERY cool!
Absolutely!!!! Would love to have the first one. What a cool guitar🤘🎸
Did you see the Gibson headstock island at the bottom by the knobs?
I LOVE the font Gibson used for the headstock logo. If I had the money to get a custom Gibson acoustic, I would 100% pay to have that inlaid instead of the standard logo (for some reason I feel like it suits an acoustic more).
Could be wrong but the dual buttons reminds me of the mooring post things 😍 great attention to detail from Gibson!
That PRS has a SINGLE piece of flamed maple on the top. It really does look like the surface of water on a lake or something, which is probably what suggested the theme of the guitar in the first place. Really stunning top.
I like the top hats knobs on the prototype
Yes I would what did it have for pick ups it sounded killer
That is one of the coolest LPs I've seen. They should definitely make more like this.
I usually hate art guitars and light color fretboards on Les Pauls….but I LOVE that thing! The proto doesn’t look bad either, but that NAMM show guitar is amazing!
The double starp buttons probably resembles the Cleat that a ship would be tied to a dock. Or similar purpose.
Those rock, especially that prototype. I play bass but love your channel. I've want a nautical inspired bass for a while, now I really need to build a bass inspired by the Kracken. Great video as always.
Maybe the double strap buttons are supposed to look like the things on boats and docks that lashed(the big ropes) the boat so it doesn't drift away.
the land mass on the right at 1:34 is a Gibson headstock.
Why change the radius? Cool axe though! I like the darker one myself.
That’s very cool !
Those double strap buttons are actually really cool. It’s for roping!
I'd totally rock that. I could probably even learn to live with the 50's neck.
The double strap buttons are supposed to represent mooring posts or cleats I imagine.
That prototype looks fantastic.
That's exactly what I thought. To a lesser degree, it kind of reminds of dual flintlock pistols.
that prototype is lit!
That is one of the nicest art guitars I have seen.
Dude! you totally missed the head stock shaped island just below the knobs! it even has tuner peg head islands around the main head stock island. cool!!!!
Easy to build a pond in your yard with recirc pump, or even use totes as portable ponds if you want to keep fish Trogly. Lots of great youtube channels on this.
I don’t normally care for art guitars, but this one is extremely cool. They executed the old nautical theme well and it’s a unique piece. I can appreciate this one.
I would rock any of the 3 featured guitars
That is cool. Great artwork.
Hell yeah I would totally rock the Kraken but I like the darker one better.......but love them both
Aye Matey, a bit of scrimshaw on the tuner knobs would be a nice touch.
Those are supposed to represent the cleats (like bollards) for securing a hawser (rope) when moored
I would rock with any of the 3 guitars. That is one awesome Les Paul and the PRS is smokin' as well. Again Austin, another great episode.
I will totally take the Koi over the Kraken. I think PRS does some of the nicest guitar finishes. You show that Gibson geode finish yesterday was terrible terrible terrible was like a high school kid’s version of a PRS finish. Still, the Kraken was pretty nice.
It's a stunner
I've seen an art guitar which has eight necks and an octopus sculpture on the body. It attaches to a harness with a ball bearing joint that allows you to rotate it like a ship's wheel to select which neck you want.
Sounds like something Rick Neilsen would buy.
Gorgeous!!!
Awesome guitar! I'd totally rock it!
Trogly’s in the HOUSE!!!
Greetings Ramiro
Have you seen the Koi capo at Thalia capos?
I have a friend that bought one of the Old Hickory Les Pauls when they came out.
The Gibson logo is made of mother of 'Black Pearl'
the two strap buttons are meant to resemble a "cleat", to tie your vessel off to the dock.
I need that in baritone tuning
Very nice art. Crazy cool guitar.
5he strap buttons are to resemble a cleat from a ship Austin
That is cool as hell! I'm guessing the double strap buttons are supposed to look like boat cleats, that are used to tie a boat up to a dock.
Love the Kraken guitar! Were those gold frets like you seen on Les Paul Supremes?
Hey Troglyman , this is a cool guitar..... And it totally looks good with Gold Hardware!... The Standard (with boarder burst) is also really awesome!!
Technically "Korina" is White Limba (and really only the sales name applied to the stash acquired by Gibson in the 50s) and Black Limba is "Heavy"... both the name and the wood have a nice ring to it though!
Trogly's pirate voice is sublime.
Super cool Kraken #1! Definitely a rocker for me. If I ever got an art guitar, it'd have to be relic'd otherwise I'd be paranoid to play it.
In a previous job I used to run a supercomputer called Kraken, so yeah, totally would.
O my I wasn’t even close. No podium for me.
Me either, I dropped from #33 yesterday to #78 today!
I'm actually later than usual! LOL
Awesome! Usually I'm not that into "art" guitars, but this is something special. I dig it, and could definitely see my scurvy self swabbing down that deck.
I'd even walk the plank to get my mitts on that thing of beauty, it's a real "treasure"...too far? Yeah, sorry, I get carried away when I see something that really catches my eye...my only eye, cause the other's got a patch on it!!
Aaaarrrgghh, me hearties!!☠️⚓☠️
