Love your videos. My son and I are getting into DE shaving together, what better way to bond doing manstuff. Thanks for changing something I have hated for 40 years into something to look forward too, its the small pleasures brother...... you are boss
Hey Geo, Steven (35) from Belgium here! Just like Mark, I have to say I love watching your videos! For 20 years I was shaving with cartridges, seeing shaving as a must-do TASK!! Notice I also shaved my head bald with cartridges. Thanks to you I stepped into DE-shaving about 2 months ago, shaving my beard/mustache and head every day now and actually looking forward to it!! Owning 6 DE-shavers already and tons of pre- and post-creams/lotions and shaving soaps, it's really becoming a wonderful passion for me!! Thanks so much for making shaving an every day passion and joy!! Surely will teach my son never to purchase cartridges and welcome him into the world of DE-shaving... LOVING IT!!!!
I just got this razor today and was really impressed with how close the shave was. I use it on my entire head and do not think I have ever had such a close, smooth shave. Thanks for the video.
I am a woman and shave 2 - 3 times a week with this razor and love it. I only use the Muhle blades and do 1 pass. Closest shave I've ever had. I rarely cut myself and have the grande handle. Learn the angle and touch and this razor won't let you down.
Hey Geo.... I received my Muhle R41 & Merkur 39C from you. I loved the 39C slant, Very smooth, predictable. It only took a few seconds to understand the angle needed, etc... I shaved with the R41 this morning with a Feather Hi Stainless blade, & Wow!!!! I read this is about as close as you can get to a Straight shave with a safety, it's true..... This thing is a beast that needs to be respected. Although I did not get bit, nor shed any blood, that could happen easily if I lose focus for one sec.
Geo, thanks for this video. I have a new R41 that I tried to shave with three or four times before with horrible and very painful results. After watching your video I adjusted my angle and had a great shave. BBS in 3 passes.
I'm new to wet shaving...this Is what I bought as my 1st razor.....and I'd say I have sensitive skin ...and I always do 3 passes ...but I just let the razor do all the work ...no issues for me
Just got this machine from you a few days ago. I think it's the single greatest grooming investment I have ever made. What a fantastic product. Thanks Geo
I LOVE my R41! The sound of the thing as it's making my face clean is just addictive. The included Derby was worthless for me. But a Feather (best) or Astra SP (not bad) work superbly well.
One tip: If you have no "ü"-key on your keyboard, type "Muehle" for "Mühle" instead of „Muhle. It can lead to bizarre confusions with German speaking people, when not using Umlauts. E.g.: Schlosser = locksmith Schlösser = palaces Masten = masts mästen = to fatten schwul = homosexual schwül = muggy Bar = barroom Bär = bear Dosen = cans/tins dösen = to doze Schussel = scatterbrain Schüssel = bowl schon = already schön = beautiful/handsome So without the possibility to use "ä", "ö" or "ü", better use "ae", "öe" or "ue" as an substitute. Best regards from Vienna!
I am waiting on my Mühle R41 to arrive and I am so hyped to try it. The trick to stretch your upper lip down to do the nose area is really useful, I will definitely try that when I receive the razor!
Amazing - used an R41 and no nicks! Mantic did the same and lots of nicks around neck on the final ATG pass. That new R41 certainly seems far more aggressive than the 2010 version.
Geo, your videos are great but I'd like to hear more information about the razors. Like addressing common concerns about the agressivness of the R41, how to alter technique when shaving with it, the pros and cons over a closed comb, comparisons between the R41 and other OC razors, etc. Thanks.
I have shaved with one for a couple of months now and it is an awesome razor, I also own a FaTip closed comb razor that's a similar weight - its a little smoother to use but does not remove hair as efficiently as the R41 does. Using Astra platinum blades in both at the moment, need to try a few different blades out in each.
Had an R41 for two weeks now, two shaves with it so far with very different results. First shave was with a derby extra & it tore my face to shreds, second shave was with a supermax blue diamond, a perfect shave, no irritation & just one tiny weeper. I've tried a derby in everything from a wilkinson sword classic, tech, fatboy, slim, black beauty, ming shi, super speed, old type & a DE89 all with disastrous bloody irritated results and yet I've used a feather in all of the above except the R41 & got excellent results. So I doft my hat to you for getting through a shave with that blade & not ending up in hospital.
Derby works for me on Merkur 23C and 20C. The R41 requires a sharp and durable blade, its very picky when it comes to blades. A mild blade will drag and not get the job done. I tried it with a Feather and it was way too aggressive for me that it was painful but Feathers work beautifully on mild razors like the DE89 and the AS-D2 and they are worth every penny. For me, the R41 works great with Polsilver, Gillette Silver Blue or Platinum and Wilkinson Sword. They are sharper than the rest but more forgiving than Feather.
Yeah I tend to use only the sharper end of the spectrum, Feathers, Polsilver, Perma-sharp, GSB's, Rubie's, Nacets & Astra SP's as my daily driver. Derby's are so bad for me I'll never use them again.
How do I start this comment except Holy Cow.... please if your a novice in DE Shaving please do not attempt to buy this razor, please serve your time as an apprentice and learn the fundamentals in DE Shaving because this razor is unforgiving, when your ready for this razor wow what a shave this is a beautiful razor...but as always let the razor do the work not your own strength...listen and learn from geofatboy he’s never steered me wrong over the years, excellent video and totally sums up the R41...enjoy my shaving brothers.. best regards Chris Lloyd from England 👌🏻
I just got mine and was so excited to use it! It felt like it was digging in to me and taking out every follicle out by root. However, I have NEVER had a closer shave In my life. Another weird thing is I also have ZERO irritation. It truly is a multi purpose tool as it will also take the place of my .45 1911 night stand gun for a weapon.
Nice presentation Geo , I have just switched from electric shaving to a safety razor and I made the choice to go with the R41 , I'm now into my 3rd week with it and I'm loving it , I fd
Another informative video, Geo. I got the RazoRock shave gel and aftershave wax from you and my wife loves the scent while I like the scent and great shave. Keep up the good work!
Hey Geo, I've bought an R41 and had 6 shaves with it including my skull. The standard handle I found was a little slippery so I replaced it with an Ikon Bulldog. This handle has turned it into a sensational razor IMO. The balance is pretty good as well. I maybe guessing but you've probably a spare Bulldog so give it a go 😀
Hi Gary, You can't go wrong with the iKon handles-they are fantastic fit and finish: shavenation.com/collections/ikon-razors You may want to check out the OSS or the SE handle which are both longer than the bulldog.
Geofatboy u were right I have a metal de razor now and not a cheap plastic one the difference is amazing and now my shave cream works better than gel out of a can.
Alright Bro! The goatee is no more! Man, you look about 15 years younger at the end of the video than at the start! LOL! I'm very impressed the razor just mowed down that goatee without a second thought! Years ago I tried to shave off a beard with a Gillette Sensor excel and...well, let's just say never again! Off to London tomorrow; taking the nephew to Truefitt and Hill for a cut-throat shave. I'll let you know how it goes. Take care my friend and keep up the great work! David
Thank You. I just bought the Muhle R89 which is my first foray into proper shaving rather than using disposable razors. You video showed me exactly what to do and how to properly and safely shave. Just had the best shave of my life thanks to this :) cheers
Your videos were my inspiration for wet shaving. I started with straight razors, I have a nice DOVO and some antiques but the safety razor is what I enjoy. I started with a mild gillette 3 piece. Now I have several gillette TTOs and a razorock mission. I have a muhle r106 and gillette new open comb on the way. I want to get a HTGAM Pollywog and a Fatip Grande open tooth. Thanks for your videos
i am going to get one of these - was going to buy an electric razor to replace my old Phillips three blade thing ... I have used the cheapo super market three blade wet shave variety's , but always found the blades got so easily clogged . Thanks for an enlightening video dude .
thanks again , but that r41 is a beast for a beginner , so i also got the 34 c which is a good starting point and then i guess when your more accustomed to it , start using the r41 ... after using the r41 i don't really think i could use it daily ... to harsh for me - happy new year fella , from london england.
Just got one of these. I'm not experienced with traditional safety razors, but FWIW, I like it more than the first one I tried, which was a Wahl Traditional Barbers adjustable. The Wahl was a lot more aggressive, even on it's least aggressive setting, I think. I exchanged the Wahl for this R41, because I wasn't happy with the workmanship. (blade not perfectly level, nor centred). Anyway, the R41 doesn't really feel all that aggressive, and it's working wonderfully. I was about to give up on safety razors, but I definitely want to pursue further now.
Hi, Excellent Vid! Heh! Heh! , I'm so glad you put a caption on screen when you said the price of the brush. I thought you said "it's a cheapie and you can get this brush for a hundred and twenty dollars"; Then, gosh! this guy must be a millionaire. Of course the caption put me right. "under $20" :-) I've recently been converted to De/SE shaving through watching Paul H and Big John, Just subscribed to your channel, You have a great easy going way of explaining every aspect without being pedantic .Looking forward to watching all your videos. Best Wishes. Peter
He Geo Thanks for all the videos, thanks to you I never cut when I shave whit DB:) One question...which should I get, the Muhle R41 ore the Mercur 39C? I have the Mercur Futur, always fun whit more razors:) Best regards from Sweden Alex
Glad I came across your videos! Question...I have never had irritation from a cartridge razor and rarely get cut. I shave against the grain with no problems. What kind of razor would you recommend for someone of my skin type?
I have this razor . It is expecially cool if you can not shave the next day (if you also go against the grain). Often I find a straight razor mor relaxing to shave. I still have not figured out if I love or hate it ... guess a bit of both. ;-)
Hello Goe, hope this finds you well. I use R49 but always get shave bumps and a few nicks. I prepare well and also post shave well. Tried many different blades and Astra sp work best. I notice you shave at an angle where the handle is quite close to your face making the blade angle getting close to 90 degrees. Does the blade slice or chomp away at the whiskers at this angle. Every days a school day Goe and still learning a lot. Thanks mate.
***** Hello Geo, got my nines and ones muddled. Its an age thing and the combination of the English climate. I should have said R41 but was probably thinking of R89 when posted. I'm not quite as sharp as the blades but I keep watching and learning. Tried the different angle and "wow" what a difference. Entirely different shave altogether and no razor burn nor irritation but still a lot of bump. Every days a school day. Many Thanks again Geo.
Just had my 1st shave with my Muhle R41, using Taylor's shaving cream and feather blades, tried to go slow and get the angle right, cut myself 9 times all over my face, the razor makes me anxious and rightly so, got a close shave though! After shaving I looked like Edward scissorhands had been let loose on me, maybe I'll try a different blade? Astra or someat else.. I've no idea what I did wrong 😤😤 I'm finding that no matter what razor I use, it doesn't glide over my face very well, maybe it's my cream??, I shower before my shave, hot wet towel after that, then shaving oil, then lather cream on my face, never got any cuts with my Merker 34C razor, but wanted the R41 for a closer shave
I'm curious as to why you didn't opt to reduce your goatee/fu with scissors or clippers first prior to the razor. Everything I've read suggests that the razor should only be used on stubble-length whiskers. I know you went light and careful, but I'd be nervous as heck to do it.
You mention "entry level brushes". What are the benefits and why would i want to spend the money on a top quality brush as apposed to a less expensive brush. I have a cheap brush Ive been using for about a year now it seems to work just fine. Thanks for your info Jake
Hi. I am new to wet shaving. I currently use a VDH safety razor with razors like voskhod and wilkinson. I am exploring other safety razors and am looking for an overall better shaving experience. Any suggestions?
There is no comparison. The R41 is a beast. I have to be really, really careful with it or I'll take my face clean off lol! My HD is super mild in comparison.
#2 Although it requires an entirely different angle than I've ever used, "almost parallel" to my face, I love the challenge. I should probably only use it when I have several days growth, & the Muhle 39C could be used more if I decided to shave daily. For the guys that have been scared off by the reviews of how "dangerous" this can be..... Don't be. It just requires that you don't use pressure, AT ALL, and use the right angle. If you apply those to every stroke, and have good lather, you're fine
That must be a real sharp blade, What do blades do you recommend for a beginner? At the moment I am using merkur blades, which are not exceptionally sharp.
I'm really tempted on getting this razor. It's been the rage lately on some forums. lol. I have a Muhle r89 and it's known for fairly mild. My dilemma is it worth owning more than 1 razor? When I got to wet shaving this year, I thought owning 1 razor is enough, like multi blade razor (sort of). But it seems most wet shavers own more than 1 razor. Also does this razor shaves like a multi blade razor? like when going N-S, does it shave close like a multi blade in 1 pass? Thanks for the vid!
I don't get it...I have been DE shaving for 3 weeks, purchased one of these Muhle R41's and it was friggin' amazing. 3 shaves on this thing and no problems whatsoever. So many videos on this razor people refer to it as a blood bath experience, getting their faces ripped off?? Not one nick, smooth as hell and actually gave me the feel with the razor that I have been looking for. Actually, when I shave with my first DE razor, the Merkur 38C, my neck gets irritated. Don't be afraid of this razor!!! I am a newby.
Tony Marinelli Actually Tony, It sounds like you DO get it! It is quite the efficient razor. I think some people may just have trouble using it properly. You nailed it first time out of the box!
***** Is it ever efficient!!!Thank you for the words of encouragement and all of your great videos. You are one of my favorites in this community and I use almost exclusively your methods. I really appreciate it!!!!
Don't know if you've used a fatip piccolo or not, but if you have How does the r41 compare to the piccolo? I have a piccolo and it works like an absolute beast but i want to try the r41 because i know it's apparently about as aggressive.
Thanks for this great shaving tutorial, @geofatboy! I recently bought the Mühle R89 after getting annoyed by my old multi-blade razor and by constant razor burn. I hope shaving will be more fun with my new razor! ;) Best regards from Germany!
+geofatboy I already shaved twice and it definitely feels a lot better! Just a few minor nicks but no razor burn or irritation. I guess shaving can actually be fun ;)
Geo, greetings from The BiG Shave. Now that the 2013 R41 has been released, have you had a chance to compare it to the 2011 version? There has been a lot of chatter in our group that the beast has been tamed. I just received my 2103 version and found it to have far less blade exposure than other OCs, like the Fatip Grande for example. I would appreciate your input! Thanks for the vids!
Most if not all quality DE razors are online anyhow. The Bic single or even double blade should work ok but try something like an Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34C to start with imo.
Hey Geo. I have the new R41 but find it so aggressive that I can only use it for cleaning up areas I miss during shaves. But it seems that you are using a very shallow angle, with the razor nearly perpendicular to your face. Have I been using the R41 the wrong way for all this time, thinking it required a conventional 30-40 degree angle?
A 120 dollar brush is entry level? I started out with a cheap 22 euro one because i thought that the whole point of DE razor shaving was that you save money because you don't throw away expensive cartridges the whole time.
Love your videos. My son and I are getting into DE shaving together, what better way to bond doing manstuff. Thanks for changing something I have hated for 40 years into something to look forward too, its the small pleasures brother...... you are boss
Thanks very much Mark! Letters like yours give me incentive to keep pushin' on! Enjoy!
Thanks Steven, my favorite part is you passing on the craft of shaving to your son! Enjoy! #fathersonbonding
I just got this razor today and was really impressed with how close the shave was. I use it on my entire head and do not think I have ever had such a close, smooth shave. Thanks for the video.
If you shaved your entire head with an R41 first time out of the box with no nicks or cuts-you got skills! Well done!
I am a woman and shave 2 - 3 times a week with this razor and love it. I only use the Muhle blades and do 1 pass. Closest shave I've ever had. I rarely cut myself and have the grande handle. Learn the angle and touch and this razor won't let you down.
Switched from the R89 to R41 and boy what a difference! The best shave I've ever had. There's no coming back to the less aggressive razor.
The R41 is a beast by comparison! aggressive, efficient, fast!
geofatboy And it definitely teaches you respect to the razor☺️
Hey Geo.... I received my Muhle R41 & Merkur 39C from you. I loved the 39C slant, Very smooth, predictable. It only took a few seconds to understand the angle needed, etc... You got to have balls to do three passes with a Muhle R41
Yeah, but he was reasonable about it. He didn’t go ATG on the mustache :))
i shave everyday wit r-41 and feather 3 passes , grip the razor near the bottom light touch
I'm new to wet shaving...this Is what I bought as my 1st razor.....and I'd say I have sensitive skin ...and I always do 3 passes ...but I just let the razor do all the work ...no issues for me
I honestly don’t see what the big deal is. R41 is not that bad at all. I did 4 passes with that razor. It’s incredible!
you are the only UA-cam shaving pro that can handle that beast! Kudos!
Astra is an awesome blade top imo
One tip: If you have no "ü"-key on your keyboard, type "Muehle" for "Mühle" instead of „Muhle.
It can lead to bizarre confusions with German speaking people, when not using Umlauts.
E.g.:
Schlosser = locksmith
Schlösser = palaces
Masten = masts
mästen = to fatten
schwul = homosexual
schwül = muggy
Bar = barroom
Bär = bear
Dosen = cans/tins
dösen = to doze
Schussel = scatterbrain
Schüssel = bowl
schon = already
schön = beautiful/handsome
So without the possibility to use "ä", "ö" or "ü", better use "ae", "öe" or "ue" as an substitute.
Best regards from Vienna!
I am waiting on my Mühle R41 to arrive and I am so hyped to try it. The trick to stretch your upper lip down to do the nose area is really useful, I will definitely try that when I receive the razor!
9 years ago. Wow. And you didn't changed at all 😉

A new video at last...lol..excellent as always.
Try L’ occitane pre-shave oil, is an amazing product
Good vid geo.
What blade did you use with the muhle r41.
Nice rock in background.
Glad I came across your videos! Question...I have never had irritation from a cartridge razor and rarely get cut. I shave against the grain with no problems. What kind of razor would you recommend for someone of my skin type?
after 3 months of DE shaving this question seems really stupid now..
@@chantastic9199 y
Carl Flude
Greetings Carl,
Don't think there is an "R49" razor that I'm aware of...
Bro are you do a review on the razor or a tutorial on how to shave like jeez
Like Yeezy?
Woohoo thanks for all the great advice, you just convinced me to buy this razor. Have great day !
Is the Muhle Traditional R41 ? 🤔

Maybe it's your angle... Check yourself before you wreck yourself! shavenation.com/collections/razor-handles
+Wayne Harris you should not start shaving with a Mühle R41. Better try the R89. The R41 is too "open" ; to aggressive for beginners.
Nice bit of Led Zeppelin in the background 🎵👍
Indeed it is!
How would you compare this Razor to the R89 Geo? Great vids, Cheers.
Tell me ...😂 What did you do at 14:52... It required some editing I see lol
Great tutorial posted below for the best angle for any type of razor.
Thanks Roy, greatly appreciated.

I'm curious as to why you didn't opt to reduce your goatee/fu with scissors or clippers first prior to the razor. Everything I've read suggests that the razor should only be used on stubble-length whiskers. I know you went light and careful, but I'd be nervous as heck to do it.
Great video as always Geo! Keep em comin
You mention "entry level brushes". What are the benefits and why would i want to spend the money on a top quality brush as apposed to a less expensive brush. I have a cheap brush Ive been using for about a year now it seems to work just fine.
Thanks for your info
Jake
Hey Geo, you ever use that knife at 4:10 for shaving? LOL
Greeting from Lancashire, UK...
ps I love my Parker 99R
Hi. I am new to wet shaving. I currently use a VDH safety razor with razors like voskhod and wilkinson. I am exploring other safety razors and am looking for an overall better shaving experience. Any suggestions?
Hi Geo. Have you used the PAA Symmetry or Razorock Jaws? If so, how would you compare those two to the Muhle r41?
I have the R-41 can I just buy the baseplate for the R-89 or I need to get the head too? Ya know instead of buying the razor
Damn what a nice tip to put rub ur fingers on the Alum Bloc to get more grip on your face. Never though of that, can't wait to shave again in 2 days!
How aggressive is this razor compared to the DE89 or the HD34C ? Love the vids Geo ! Cheers !
There is no comparison. The R41 is a beast. I have to be really, really careful with it or I'll take my face clean off lol!
My HD is super mild in comparison.
#2
Although it requires an entirely different angle than I've ever used, "almost parallel" to my face, I love the challenge.
That shaving cream looks good. Might have to invest in some
That must be a real sharp blade, What do blades do you recommend for a beginner?
Tony Marinelli
Actually Tony, It sounds like you DO get it!
Don't know if you've used a fatip piccolo or not, but if you have
How does the r41 compare to the piccolo? I have a piccolo and it works like an absolute beast but i want to try the r41 because i know it's apparently about as aggressive.
wonder would muhle top head fit Edwin Jagger?
Can teach me how to shave with an axe?
You don’t need a lot of cream just a little bit but you’re doing a great job
Question: which one would be considered more aggressive the Muhle R41 or the Merkur 25C?
Thanks for this great shaving tutorial, @geofatboy! I recently bought the Mühle R89 after getting annoyed by my old multi-blade razor and by constant razor burn. I hope shaving will be more fun with my new razor! ;) Best regards from Germany!
+Flo23M
Oh, You know it will be better!
+geofatboy
I already shaved twice and it definitely feels a lot better! Just a few minor nicks but no razor burn or irritation. I guess shaving can actually be fun ;)
Nice rake Geo, although I reckon the Ikon Smooth / comb combo takes some beating.
BTW, Whats the difference between Razorock and the Razorrock XXX.
Nice Video! I just ordered this razor yesterday after hearing all the hype about it. Did you think it was very aggressive? Thanks again for the video!
8:50 you looked like a boss with just a mustache :)
I only have two regrets. First, I'm over 60. Second, I've only just started to wet shave!
@geofatboy Your tutorials are extremely helpful. Keep up the great work!! FYI : You should trademark that "clear the runways" quote. LOL!! Cheers!!
does it make a difference on how close the shave is when it's a open safety bar o close safety bar?
Geo, greetings from The BiG Shave. Now that the 2013 R41 has been released, have you had a chance to compare it to the 2011 version? There has been a lot of chatter in our group that the beast has been tamed. I just received my 2103 version and found it to have far less blade exposure than other OCs, like the Fatip Grande for example. I would appreciate your input! Thanks for the vids!
Soon getting this and the merkur 37c slant cant wait 😁
Most if not all quality DE razors are online anyhow. The Bic single or even double blade should work ok but try something like an Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34C to start with imo.
I would have loved to see it with a feather blade!
Thank you for the advices!
Another excellent video. Very informative.
What´s that knife you used to open the soap´? looks like Hulks pocketknife
geo i was wondering what D.E razor wont break the bank so to speak however still be able to produce a great shave
نعيما Nice shave
A 120 dollar brush is entry level? I started out with a cheap 22 euro one because i thought that the whole point of DE razor shaving was that you save money because you don't throw away expensive cartridges the whole time.
If you listen closely that's not what I said...
He said "it's about ... under $20" - the "under" sounded like "hundred"
jrbleau oh. #JUSTFOREIGNERTHINGS
jrbleau
Thanks for the clarification!
That's my Chicago-ese taking over.
Haha it did sound like hundred! I have that brush, looses hair every time!
Sublime in the background....Awesome
+eab
Sweet!
