They're just better too, although i was in reverse, started off safety, with the mass exodus Gillette actually started paying a few people just to order their blades off like third party sites. I bought like a dollar shave club starter kit, i tried a Gillete with eagerness, just too rough and not as sharp as my safety. Ironically enough it was just a nameless generic one i found at a bin for like 5$ but it's still going strong and super smooth. I'm wondering about upgrading the blades on amazon since like the difference between luxury premium safety blades and generics are like literally pennies (10$ for 100 5 star astras vs 6$ for a low ranked 2.5 star generic! , at 4 cents difference a blade, who's counting?!? )

I can now shave my neck, as you would know is a problem area for us black men. When I first used this type of razor I first thought it was cutting the hair on my face, its SUPER SMOOTH. I shaved my neck and let me tell ya, no irritation, no burning, nothing. I went over it ONCE and the hair was gone. Best switch I have made in my life.

It's only when you look into 'why' Gillette started doing multi-blade razors that you realise they might well qualify as the biggest scam of the 20th century.
It was because their patent was running out, and they feared competition from abroad as the safety razor design is so simple, pretty much anyone can replicate it abroad for cheaper costs. The multi-blade razors, whilst offering no real benefit, were more complex to make, and by adding small changes, Gillette could renew their patents as often as they needed to.
Then you get into the markup on those cartridges. They don't cost much more to make than a regular razor blade, and the markup on them has been estimated at over 4000%. I can get a pack of ten multi cartridges for £10 to £20 in the UK. Meanwhile I can buy 100 safety razor blades for £10. The cartridges are also non-recyclable, whereas the simple razor blades corrode and bio-degrade.
When you then realise that with a little bit of practice, a safety razor offers a comparable shave to any multi-blade, it starts to sell itself.
£25 for a razor and enough blades to last years.

    • @Lycosa
      @Lycosa 5 років тому +56

Yep man. Amazing cost effectiveness in the long run, initial cost may be 40-250€ instead of 10-30€ for a Gillette razor handle. But, the cartridges (Pro fusion glide) cost 17€ per a pack of 4 here... Rip off/expensive.
I bought a pack of 100 good old school Safety Razor blades for 10€. You can't even get four top tier cartridges for that, here in Finland. Lol. Can save money and make shaving a pleasant, comfortable ritual! Less annoying/boring!!

I spent 8 Euros for a Qshave and 6 for 100 Gillette Wilkinson sword from India. I can get 4 shaves from the blade as opposed to 7 from the Mach3 @ 2.5 Euros each. It takes the same time to shave because I need a two pass shave with the cartridge if I want a clean face.
Of course Gillette doesn't sell these blades in Europe or the USA so that rip off continues and clients watch ads on tv endorsed by millionaire sports figures.

I have been using a DE for the last 30 years. One suggestion to anyone moving to DE: You need to find your right DE and blade combination, good for your skin, open comb vs closed, right blades with respect to mild vs aggressive, ... it takes a while. I tried at least 10 blades brands to find the one I like. Once you find it, you are in heaven, no cost, perfect shaving.

Thank you for the good tips. I'm new to safety razors, and I've got a budget DE with a safety bar. I shaved once so far. It took me a long while to get it done; I had a hard time trying to figure out the angle and was afraid of getting myself cut. I have yet to learn the right angle. I noticed that depending on how I hold the razor, it was a bit too aggressive or wouldn't cut at all. I decided to switch to DE since shaving has always been a chore for me; I never had luck with cartridge razors, or electric shavers, for that matter. I must say that the experience is already better using the DE.

I don't mind Van Der Hagen/Weishi razors but I had some of my worst cuts from the Van Der Hagen blades. Honestly, I use a Parker 23C or some Gellette 60's replica razor. Both slightly more expensive but better razors overall. One is mild to medium and one is medium to aggressive

I am switching to DE, but if this was the first video I found on the subject I'd walk away. The things he says are inaccurate and biased. For example the blades on these cartridges do not perform the same as a DE blade so 5 blades on a cartridge does not equal the damage of 5 DE blades. The blades are much more spring and flexible than the rigid DE. I know what you said is a joke, but I suspect you do believe this was a fair comparison video.

Safety Razor by a mile. Once you use it, you'll know why. The cartridges are the biggest shit on the market for beards. They always irritated my skin and I had little wounds because of it. The Safety Razor is so much better. You have to practice a little bit, but it's more accurate and comfortable for your skin.

I've been using the original Gillette Sensor since about 1989. I liked it better than others through the years. Enough so that I bought a backup handle in the early 90s. When the original finally gave up the ghost about ten years ago, I broke out the backup handle. It's still good, but I've always wondered about good old safety razors since Sensor cartridges are expensive now. The Sensor's two blades vs. the later bazillion blade razors always worked best for me. So I am about to take the plunge into a safety razor. Wish me luck gentlemen!

Thank you so much for this video! So informative! I'm a woman so I need to shave much more than just my face. My skin is EXTREMELY sensitive. I grew up thinking there were only three options- cartrige saving, waxing, and lazer hair removal. The latter two only being for the wealthy. Which I am not.
Cartridge razors wreck hell on my bikini area. Bleeding, razor burn, bumps, iching, and constant pain. Not to mention how unsanitary it can be. (For those of you who don't know, disposable razors actially make tiny, microscopic cuts on the skin. This increases your chances of getting an STD, STI, or urinary tract infection.)
I have been using hair removal cream, which works well, but I can't inagine it's good for me, especially for long-term.
You really hit the nail on the head with this video. I hate constantly having to go over the same area 10 times just to get it semi-smooth.
I know this comment was a bit of a TMI, but I do think it's important to adress the health aspect of what cartidge razors can do. I truly think shaving with these razors has contributed to the increasing rate of STIs/STDs nationwide.

I use both. If I shave regularly I like the safety razor. Otherwise, with more growth I prefer the multi blades. Not all multi blades are equal. In my experience the mach 3 is about as good as they come. The cream and shaved hair washes away from the blades easily and still gets under the nose good also. It cause less irritation when there is more hair growth to shave. Ive never had to go over the same areas that many times. Im also a brush guy.

Used cartridge razors on my face and my skin would be inflamed, irritated, and red for hours so I stopped close shaving for a while and only used electric razors resulting in the perpetual five o'clock shadow. I bought a pack of Wilkinsons sword double edge razors for my shavette i started using again, i opened the packet and every single blade had "A Gillette Product" stamped on it, which was kind of annoying.
I was always planning on stopping using cartridges because of the insane price ($28 for 8 cartridges) but the ad was the final straw for me.

Great video, sir..very informative..I've been asking this question for many a year..I have two safety razors , the best blades I have used so far are Van der Hagen...but I bought some at a dollar store, and the proof was in the pudding! It's the razor that does the work..thank you for your information!

I've tried all kinds of razors. Plus I shave my head, too. Up to this time Bic Flex 3 is the best one for me.
Gillette shave gels are also excellent.

Solid metal cheapo safety razor that will last a lifetime $17. One hundred DE razor blades $15. Gillette write-down of EIGHT BILLION DOLLARS!!! ----- priceless. Safety razor is far superior in every way than over-priced plastic cartridges. Always.

I’ve been using DE safety razors for over 12 years. After I retired 3 years ago I’ve used primarily a straight razor. I use the DE when I’m pressed for time, it’s is quicker and safer than a straight razor. Don’t be in a hurry shaving with a straight. Overall, I enjoy shaving with a straight the beat. However, the learning curve with sharpening and shaving was about 3-4 months. I definitely wouldn’t recommend a straight razor if you’re a busy person.

My Mach 3 served me really well for about 15 years. During this time i've used just 8 cartridges. Do the match. Very good shave results. Really fast and safe even with an up and down motion (yes it works. reduces the shaving time by half).
BUT...either my facial hair became very hard last year, or the last 2 cartridges had very very soft blades and wore out REALLY fast. After just two shaves they simply wouldn't cut. Then i saw that the price of those things has skyrocketed and i didn't even bother replacing them.
I got a nice safety razor and 15 blades. Let's see how long they last. In terms of shaving results....well i'm a "noob" and still have perfected my technique, but the shave is rather inconsistent, especially on the chin and jawline. The Mach 3 was very consistent around those.

Used my new safety razor today for first time. No cuts or scrapes but ive been using a straight for 10 years or so which maybe helped with the technique. Replaced my stupid Gillette disposables I used when I was in a rush and didn't want to go through the straight razor process. Was a great shave and super easy and quick. Score! Bought 100 blades for like 10 bucks.

Just switched to a Rockwell Razor model T. It's easily as fast and smooth as my old cartridge razor and way cheaper. The model T was a kickstarter project so the new one's are back ordered but the execution of the razor is flawless. Rockwell has a number of classic safety razors, 6C, and 6S which have the same range as the model T, just a bit more work to change the width of the cut.

After watching more of these YT videos about DE safety razors than I can remember, it was obvious I needed to give them another go. I grew up using my grandfather’s, and never liked it. But of course, I was a novice back then and maybe he wasn’t investing in good blades. Almost 40 years of shaving had me wind up with disposable multi blade cartridge razors. You get 3 or 4 for $5-$10, and I’ve found some that leave me with a baby smooth shave that’s the best I’ve had in my life. Currently, my favorite are the 5 blade Schick Hydro. They’re sharp, quick, forgiving, and I’ve only had one mishap in the two years I’ve been using them. But again, these videos convinced me I need to give the safety razor another opportunity. I finally got the Wilkinson Sword kit with DE safety razor, with 5 DE blades that win fairly high praise here. While I was at it, I also got the Wilkinson Sword shave soap and brush. I eased into this by using the soap and brush for a month. It’s a good way to go, and I have come to enjoy it, although the process adds a lot of time to the shave. Finally, I jumped in with the DE safety razor. First shave was somewhat of a scary experience. Yes, memories of all the nicks and cuts I used to endure immediately returned. Perhaps being tentative played a big role, but the shave was nowhere near as close as I’ve become used to. I also disliked the much heavier razor. That said, I survived, and wanted to give this a month. I understand I need to develop my technique, and obviously a lot of guys in these videos found success with this regimen. A month has now passed, and I spend 6 days a week with the DE, and one day with my Schick disposable. I have definitely improved, and have become more comfortable with the DE safety razor, and can produce a much better result. That said, it’s still nowhere near as close, as comfortable, or as safe as the disposable. I’m going to keep going a little longer, and have considered trying a different blade, and see what happens. Maybe it’s me, but I just don’t find anything about the DE safety razor that’s superior to the better disposable razors available today. Another thing that often comes up is economics and environmental considerations. Given this is definitely a hobby for many here, and while it could be a cheaper way to go, I think that’s not really the case. Watching the amount of money spent on trying and collecting all manner of razors, brushes, soaps, and blades equates to significant cost. On my end, an $8 pack of razors lasts me 3-5 months, of again, much safer, more comfortable, much closer shaves. And in complete truth, the volume a razor takes up as a percentage of the total waste my family generates almost doesn’t even register. Again, maybe it’s me, but I’m about to walk away from the old style razors for the second time in my life

You are maintaining those cartridge razors really well, which is to be commended you make them last a long time and get great value for money out of them. Most do no and they have to buy more every few shaves, making it incredibly costly, I believe the average man uses about 8 cartridges a month which if your using Gillette Fusions makes that $25 a month which is $300 a year on razors for 1 person and 96 pieces of metal encased in plastic in the bin every year. You could buy 100 blades for $8 that would last you the entire year instead which are 100% metal and can be safety recycled or disposed of environmentally friendly. Pretty big difference if you ask me. Don't give up on the safety razor just yet, you just have to find a razor and blades that work for you, there are many different choices to try or can lookup reviews for. Every man's skin is different and you might just find your dream razor + blades, find you enjoy it and save some money too :).

cattysplat thank you for your perspective. I’m going to give DE safety razors more of a chance. I’m looking at a couple of plastic versions the Wilkinson and Merkur, which are affordable and address my preference for a much lighter razor. I also acquired a sampler, with Feather and Derby and four or five others in between those two, which should cover the shades in between. On the disposable side, I’ve really done well. Two weeks ago, the local papers featured a sale on the Schick 5 blade Hydro I’ve discovered this past year that definitively provide me the best shaves of my life. Sale was $8.99 for a 3 pack, with a $4 coupon that brings the price down to $4.99. Even better, at the supermarket, I found several 4 packs that included an extra razor. That works out to $1.25 per razor. And in use, I started a new razor May 1, and after several weeks, felt I’d move to the next one on June 1. But as I hit that day, still getting incredibly close, comfortable shaves, I decided to let it go until July 1. Incredible! I’m talking closer shaves that I have gotten from any other razor, disposable, cartridge, DE, anything. Baby smooth, comfortable, and maybe only a couple episodes of irritation and maybe one nick or two in more than a year. This with me shaving blindly in the shower, which is lightning fast. More and more, I wonder why I bother as there is currently nothing better available today. But I have an attraction to the wet shaving culture, DE safety razors, blades, and all. Maybe it will work out, though it’s a far more lengthy, dangerous, attention demanding process yielding a far less close shave. The sampler pack and a different razor will obviously provide me with the ultimate answer

I live in the Netherlands, from my experience most of the stuff you can buy here in the Grocery Stores are from Gilette or Wilkinson, are heavily overpriced (cartridge systems that is) and just not good at all in my experience. The rate of irritation after using these products is high; to stimulate you to buy other products as well (like lotions) ?
    But it's also not only the cartridge system; check out the foams (several brands) you buy in these canisters, there looks to be a kind of acid in it to create more volume and this can potentially irritate your skin even more (if the PH value differs). Once I switched to the Double Edge razors I only noticed then I could shave much smoother with (almost) no irritation in combination with traditional (pre-)shave cream and soaps. Yes it will take you more time in the beginning (few minutes more) but you will enjoy the shave much more, have a better result, less skin burn & irritation. Also the traditional shave set (DE razor, brush, shaving bowl) looks more awesome than the plastic throw away cartridges. Money wise, you will also earn back the investment of a DE razor very quickly and after that it will be much cheaper (a blade costs 10-20 cents composed to a few dollars of a cartridge) Today I ordered my 2nd Rockwell Razor (Rockwell 6S), the 6T is also out but I wanted to try the 6S first. The cream and soap I order are from an Italian brand, but that it very personal (the scent and so on).;
Try a DE, borrow one from a friend, of course clean it very well first with high percentage alcohol, check out the UA-cam instruction video's, become a pro and spread the word.

That sounds identical to american stores, which have 99% disposable, plastic, and multi blade cartridge- extremely over priced. The "mega" pack of pro glide cartridges cost $39. and the canister "shaving cream" is horrible. and for women: everything comes in pink color, and 5 blade cartridge razors are for shaving legs and pubic hair.

There's an extra blade on the back of the cartridge razor for hairs under the nose and sideburns, you just hold the handle backwards.

I really like the shave I get from the safety razor-but being new to using it I get multiple cuts per shave-still learning the technique. I think it comes down to knowing the direction of your stubble growth so you can shave with the grain.
