Geo, I went from using a terrible Gillette Fusion to a safety razor about 3 years ago when I found this channel. Bought a Muhle R89 with some Feather blades and Proraso products and couldn't be happier. My shave routine completely changed, my skin feels much fresher and smoother with a safety razor than those gimmicky razors with the 5 blades and aloe vera strip. Keep up the good work man, love these videos.
Thank you Viriatvs I'm glad the vids helped you switch up your shave and that you are now enjoying it much more! Gotta do it thousands of times in our lifetime, might as well get into it and enjoy the process❤️
@viriatvsoflvsitania5422 Same story here! I switched 1 month ago and I buyed a Merkur 34C with Proraso products. I enjoy every moment and I couldn't wait till the next shave😅 Never ever Cartridge Razors! Thanks for everything @geofatboy !
Just starting with my R89, awesome results. I'll stick to it a few months, then im upgrading to R41 for a closest shave. I love the aftershave moment. Thanks for the video!
My face won't take more than once every two days, too aggressive. Using it once a week makes it perfect and it's the real reason why I got such a razor. You must have really thick skin if you shave daily with it.
The R41 is not a beginner's razor. If you have some experience then go for it. Take your time, and let the razor do the work. The shave is worth it. Closest I have had from a safety razor.
Thanks for your tips, especially about the difference between scraping and just catching the hair when shaving against the grain. I have tried getting close shave but due to high angle it always turned out to be an irritating shave, I am getting better results now. Thanks again.
Thanks, Geo. I have both (on the grande handle) and would recommend them to anyone. You can buy the two heads and you only need one handle for both. Also, you can swap the top caps for different levels of efficiency. Cheers.
R41 only works with a Feather for me. But I still prefer the Merkur Futur because of its higher weight. It gives me a slightly closer and faster shave and it works with all blades thanks to being adjustable to all blades.
I purchased the R89 as my first safety razor and it has been absolutely amazing. Not too wild, but it performs absolutely fantastic. It's great for beginners looking for some quality hardware. In time I'm sure I'll upgrade to something more aggressive, or better yet, something adjustable. I'm in no hurry to do so however as the R89 is giving me a super duper smooth shave.
The R41 is bad ass, I love only doing two passes and get baby smooth. I use it everyday but you do have to be careful not to press too hard, respect the beast!
Very informative video. Thank you. I shave with a straight razor but have just bought a RazoRock BBS safety razor. I love it! The angle of the blade is bent to 30 degrees and the torsion on the blade seems to provide an easy perfect shave. Would love to see you do a review of that razor one day
Thanks for using metric system ;). I own a R89, very efficient over short beard - as you said, good for everyday, but lacking of skills over a longer beard -say three to for days. Even with feather blades. So I was considering buying a R41 head as I don't always shave daily. You convinced me.
Three years ago, I practiced shaving while watching the video of geo, you. It is good to see you, geo standing on the pulpit and lecturing shaving videos often these days.
Hi Geo- Great shave and comparison video; thank you! After three years of DE shaving, I still haven’t taken the plunge with the R41. Your advice and guidance in this video has been a great help towards using this razor! Enjoy the rest of the weekend and all the best!
I actually learned DE shaving with the R41 and the green Astra blades (by accident), a friend of mine let me borrow a spare safety razor of his thinking he gave me the R89 but forgot to swap the razor heads. Got used to it quite quickly and loved it very much, but avoided doing more than two passes. When I finally ordered my own r89 I wondered why the design was different. Now I can basically shave with any DE razor XD
I had both of them and I don't have none of them now. Progress won against them for me. It's worth mentioning that there were 3 (?) versions of R41, so it's hard to learn about this razor, because you can read review from someone with older version. R41 isn't that agressive as people say. For me both of them are good razors and Muhle is manufacturing beautiful handles.
Great video; funny how it appeared as a recommended video for me tonight, I just a couple of hours ago bought an R41 head! Been using an R89 for a couple of years with Feathers and just fancied trying out a more aggressive head. Always enjoy your vids Geo, cheers!

Great comparison, geofatboy! Thanks! I just purchased a Muhle R89 Grande after being away from DE razors since the late 70's. I've had almost no issues with nicks and zero cuts. I shave every day and make 3 passes, but I usually have to clean up. Right now, I'm using Muhle K1 blades that I bought with it. I'd be okay with a little more aggressive shave. I'm not sure of jumping up to a R41 is necessary. Would a more aggressive blade make a difference? If so, any recommendations? Also, I've recently read where guys use a shim or two. Is that a good idea or not? Thanks!
@@juliusu6615 ah ok. I have experience with mostly Merkurs like 34c, 25c, 23c, the 1904/1906, but also the Muhle R41, and the Parker 22R. Most of those are mild which it what I tend to prefer usually. So I tend to try to assess a razor's aggressiveness based on what I have the most experience with.

According to your video with shaving only once every three days I should use a R41. Had a Muhle R89 until it broke, it gave a great shave. Then tried a Parker 22R much more aggressive. Do I go back to the 89 or try the 41? Just wish they would make the handles longer on the Muhle.
i find my merkur 23c to be pretty good at finishing of problem areas, but doing a full shave with it seem to take a lot of effort. maybe starting with r41 and then do the second pass with r89 could be nice. might be a bit excessive to use multiple razors though. i've been using mostly straights but don't feel like reusing it after cleaning it of, 23c is placed conveniently in a holder while most other stuff is packed down in their packages.
Thanks, Geo. Glad to catch this very recent video of yours comparing the two really well-known Mühle safety razors. I figured, at first, that it must be a rerun, but no. I have one question. It seems that the R41 is like "King of the Hill," when considering open-combs. I have several open-comb heads that I've purchased to get an idea of open-combs. I haven't purchased a Mühle open-comb. Is there any quality, attribute or aspect of its performance that sets it apart in such a way as to be superior, supreme or whatever? You've given a good demo and explanation of these two Mühle razors. Just wondering what you might say about the R41's status or rank among open-combs. Thanks again, Geo. Being from South Bend, IN (though in San Jose, CA now), I was glad to find out, recently in a video of yours or maybe in the video of you and Lynn Abrams, that you are a Chicago guy. Never wondered about where you were located, but figured it was someplace in the New England part of the U.S.

It's really about the practice. The R89 was my first DE 2-3 months ago and I also struggled a bit with razor burn for the first 1-2 months. If you think you don't apply any pressure you probably still apply a bit of pressure. Also check the direction of your beard growth.

Would burn through the soap. I watched his Proraso shaving cream video and created a crazy amount of soap and lather just using a pea sized amount of cream as opposed to the quarter sized amount in his bowl.
@@geofatboy much better Geo. There weren’t pools of lather and foam in this video. Good job! Also I wasn’t trying to be overly critical of your videos or method or offend you in my initial post. It just made me wonder if I were doing something wrong by not making so much lather and foam.
I noticed a curious thing, I have both, and one had 4 stamped on to the top, and other had 5, and the one with the "4" has more aggressive angle, and out of curiosity I mixed them up used the milder "5" with the open comb. I personally liked the mild open comb better than the aggressive, and my blades last longer than with the aggressive one. Gets my jawline better than either in their original configuration.

I have a Muhle rocca and have trouble shaving one day growth of beard (it hurts to shave even though i do all the retuals, pre-shave, warm towel, razors are brand new etc). Several day of growth more than 3 days is no problem and I get super nice smooth finish but for shorter stubble, it kinda hurts to shave. Would it be better to use a less agressive razor like R89 if I shave every day or two?
@@geofatboy Thank you... I meant that I'm more interested in the R89 BUT it wouldn't hurt to know what the construction material is of ALL products reviewed. Good to see Geo back in the 'den' without the Greek background 😁 Superb efficiency as usual and never a nick or cut. You made the R41 look like an every day piece of cake. 👌
The quality is NOT perfect on my R41, I bought it from a supplier in Australia and the top cap has burning marks under it, the supplier said that it's normal machine marks on the R41
I love when you shave fully with the both edges before you clean it up. I know most DE razor can take all the half face with no problem 6:18 - 7:15 before clean the razor again. But ist only with the aggressive razors or all razors? When I see others don't do it like that, it annoys me and then I stop the video and scroll it. Greetings from Palestine!

@@geofatboy much better Geo. There weren’t pools of lather and foam in this video. Good job! Also I wasn’t trying to be overly critical of your videos or method or offend you in my initial post. It just made me wonder if I were doing something wrong by not making so much lather and foam.
Would r41 be good for every day use with agressive growth ?
Thanks for your video. I follow geofatboy shaving style👍
Is it possible to change handles between those two models?
Nice review by the way 👍
Yes, just buy the heads and one handle 👍.
Sometimes the best things happen by accident! You found the winning formula.
thanks, exactly where i was looking for!!!
Which is better for a beginner? I want to buy my first safety razor
Great shave very informative thanks for sharing
Thanks John!
New camera. Nice!
You noticed, you like? Thanks!
i have a weird Beard growing. Actually i shave with Philips 9000. I want to shave wet. I dont know what to buy. Thouse Muhle Shavors, or the new Gillette Heated Razor ?
Hey geo what are the more or most aggressive safety razors you sell my friend
Hi Geo, do you think you could do a against the grain pass everyday ?
typical men product @14:24:
Shaving finish product is also a deodorant! haha
I like your videos! Keep up the good work!
I have a question.
So is the head of the muhle r89 identical to the edwin jagger de89? That’s what i heard.
That is a safe bet!
Great shave duo Geo!
Thanks Dallas!
How does the R89 compare to something like the merkur 23c? Is it more or less aggressive than that?
Is the R41 comfortable for how scary ppl say it is? Because I use a Shavette so I think I’d be okay to handle it lol 💈😎🤙
If you can wield a shavette, you'd have no probs with the R41.
Would be nice if they sold the older smaller R41 heads again.
Which Muhle Razor is exactly between these two?
There's any marks on these heads? I want to buy r89 razor and r41 head. How I can determine which one is?
Great comparison and review!
You've got a beautiful bathroom!
I think it's green screen 😬
I have the R89 - it's a good razor if you don't mind to have 3 passes.
The two razors are made out of what material? More interested in the R89 but...
Thank you.
Chrome plated brass I would think, but I'll research it for you. R89 but❓
@@geofatboy Thank you... I meant that I'm more interested in the R89 BUT it wouldn't hurt to know what the construction material is of ALL products reviewed.
Seeing in the comments now that R89 is the EJ head? Is this correct? Would like to find something slightly more aggressive than EJ to use on occasion.
the R41 is zamak.
It seems like R41 is the best razor in the world till now !
now I have a question from you Great George , if you want to pick a razor between R41 and 34C HD , which one will you choose and why ? or please if you can make a video and compare these two !
The 34C shaves much more similar to the R89 - mild to medium as well... Tough call, it depends how often I'm shaving
What's the best straight razor when moving from a DE for the first time?
Made in Germany, 5/8 Round Point, carbon Steel-Like this one: bit.ly/BokerSNStraightRazor Designed for newcomers!
I can't find a razer that I could use comfortably every single day. I need to shave at least every second day
Nice shave
Right On Jay!
AWSOME video, thank you!
I wish you would freestyle on your shaves
Johnny! I got the words all laid out already-I just need a good heavy beat!
It is not normal. It is german product. They wouldn't sell bad finished razor.
Nice review!
Thanks Chris!
Greetings from Palestine!
geo do people claim that these two razors are the most aggressive?
The R41 is one of your more aggressive shaving razors.
wonder if Chuck norris uses this naa nothing tough enough for his beard
Question? Is the King C Gillette have a muhle head?
Hi... Will the R41 replacement head fit on a Gillete heritage handle? I hate to buy a full R41 if the $25 replacement works.
Hmmm, not sure. I don'tt own the heritage...
