- In this video we share how to install a quartz curb top. Plus you'll see how to start the layout and tile a shower bench with subway tile. This can be more technical than you'd think.

The first step in to setting a curb top is to tile the first row of the shower bench.
Use a laser level to make this easier and determine the layout before setting tile in thin-set mortar.
Leave at least a 1/8" expansion and contraction joint between the tile at any change of plane, e.g. adjacent wall or shower pan.
We notched the quartz curb with Montolit's CGX115 diamond blade and angle grinder. This allowed us to slide the subway tile behind the curb top for a cleaner look.
Our biggest tip for setting both the curb and tile is to ensure at least 95% coverage of thin-set mortar. This is an industry guideline for wet areas like a shower.

I really like how you describe what your partner is doing as he does it...a narrative. It ties the two (technique and visual) together very nicely. Which is why I subscribe to your channel. So many "experts" on utube blab for 20 minutes, then proceed to place the back of their head between the camera and what they are doing. Your videos are top notch. Plus you actually EDIT your videos to cut out the minutae.
Thank you Miestro another great video for tile novelist.
Great video, love the narrative. I am about to do my curb top and I was going to start with tile on both sides of the curb, inside and outside shower, then place curb top with a slight inward slope. Why do you do cap first then cut tiles? Is your order important here?
You did help me with shower stall, ty!!
On the far wall where the tile meets the quartz bench top, wouldn't it look cleaner if you tile all the way around the bench and then add the top on the bench at the very end?
Excellent video thanks for sharing I haven’t seen you for a while so I thought I’d drop over and show some support look forward to hearing from you keep up the great work God bless Ken
You should try out the Dewalt Green 12 volt 360 laser level. I install tile for a living as well and clarity of the green line is so much better. (And battery is rechargeable)
Awesome tip, and a rechargeable battery is great! What’s the cost for one? And do you remember the model number. We could try to do a video on it and compare the red and green lasers, that would be cool
Model number DW089LG price is right around 500
It’s has 3 360 degree lasers. Allows you to lay our floors with it as well since they are all 360 degrees. It’s best laser I have used yet. Thanks
I use it with the Bosch laser pole BP350
Thanks Adam, we’ll try to get one and do a comparison. The Bosch we used in this video was about $129 and we also used their pole. We like the old LaserJamb better but it’s hard to find.
Only 500$
DISCLAIMER: Not trolling here just genuinely curious as to why you wouldn’t go ahead and make your tile cuts for the outside of the curb before putting your threshold on? (Or maybe you did🤷🏻♂️)
Great video as always.
If you put the thinset lines in the short direction there’s less chance for air to get trapped
What trowel do you use on the curb and how much slope is needed?
What's the purpose of cutting those notches in the quartz curb top? The video never showed what you're doing with that - seems confusing why you would need to do that notching?
Could you explain where you hang your shower door cause you can't srew into wedi board right?
Where do you guys source your quartz thresholds? Thank you for all the help!
We source it locally here in Pittsburgh
I see that they sell them online at Grifform.com
My question is this- I have a wedi full curb and it’s pre pitched - but this video says to level the top of curb piece. I’m confused as to why you would level the curb piece if you want it sloped towards drain? Won’t the angle of the curb automatically slope the piece of quartz/ marble towards the drain and just leave it? My concern is the glass,
He is saying the curb is level long ways not shot ways. Curb has to be pitched towards the drain
Are those tile spacers 1/16?
Is the curb cap single or double beveled? I'm having a hard time finding anything but single bevel curb caps.
both sides on top were beveled by the company we got it from, they customized it per our specs
@@HomeRepairTutor thanks for the swift reply... yea i got a quote for $70 to bevel the second side... honestly 4 way bevel would probably be the way to go if you're going to kick it!
How wide is the curb top?
👍🏽
What is the overhang of the quartz threshold?
Anthony, I think we made it 1 inch on each side
Thanks. I prefer this, but Wife likes tile (too many joints) and it would be hard to find a 60" threshold, but trying to keep joints at a minimum
i think that thinset has prolly skinned no?
