- Today's video shares tips on how to tile a shower wall, specifically the plumbing wall of a subway tile shower. We show how to start the first row of tile, what tools make this easier, and why we do what we do.

We started the first row of subway tile by finding the center of the wall and positioning our laser level roughly 4 inches above the shower pan.
Then we copied the subway tile patter that was on the opposite wall. This establishes symmetry in the shower. For example, the first tile we set was a full tile positioned just to the right of the center mark.
Always leave a gap between the first row of tile and shower pan tile for expansion and contraction. Same principle holds true for any change of plane, e.g. at vertical walls and shower curbs.
As we worked our way up the wall we staggered all the subway tile. The biggest challenge for some people is how cut notches in the tiles for curbs or mixing valves. Our video shows how we do that with Montolit's CGX115 diamond blade

Thanks for that great video. 👍
Thanks man, hope it helps
Did you add that trim on top for the flair? Or because of the gap left after the last tile….
What is the trowel size used for 4 X 12 subway tiles in a tub surround? 1/4" X 3/8 square notch?
Love your videos!! Not sure if this has been addressed, but how does Steve handle covering outside corners with respect to using a tile that is "multi-dimensional"? I know, and have used, the aluminum trim rails, and they work great for flat tile...but I'm curious as to if anything is available for tiles with "waves", etc. in them. Thanks, and keep up the great work!!
Thanks Scott and we’d probably look for a metal profile. The wavy tiles would present an issue, hopefully the ones being used would have some type of bullnose or finished edge. We’ll have to install some of those
If I used leveling clips on my back wall but not really liking it… can I just use horse shoe shims on the sides walls ?
Great video.. What size grout joint are you using?
How do you keep track that your wall remains vertical as you move up. This is critical at the bull nose area if a frameless shower is to be installed. Thanks
We use a laser level for both vertical and horizontal lines
How long does it take to tile a tub surround with subway tile, roughly?
It depends on your skill level, complexity of tub, and size of subway tile. Anywhere from 2-3 days if you're doing it all day.
Love these videos and just finished a tub surround after a complete gut with 3x6 subway. Used these videos for a lot of the work. The actual tiling would have taken me 5-7 full days after spending a week on demo and prepping new walls and shower. I have tiled before. There were just so many cuts and I didn’t want weird or uneven lines, I also had a 12x20 niche which I really think doubled my
time planning and working in and around but I’d say it was worth it. Take your time to plan and set aside at least 8 hours or you waste a lot of time prepping and cleaning!
Specifically when you are working on the first course
Do you really need leveling clips for such small tiles?
depends on the tile and whether it’s bowed
@@HomeRepairTutor Ok, so I just noticed the wall above the vanity isn't completely plumb for tiling the backsplash. Can I just use levelers and adjust the amount of thinset to compensate?
Where is your laser level positioned in this video?
At the beginning we set the horizontal line 4” above the pan to set the first row and the vertical line along the bullnose
why do you always say "we"? Are you doing some of the work but just not on camera, or do you just do the camera?
Richard, we are a team - and together we make the videos. Sometimes I do work and sometimes Steve does the work. But in the end we do the work together to make great videos for you.
that's good, I've just never seen you do any work in the videos. Steve does great work.
Understood, initially I was in front of the camera and still do some projects but made the decision to focus on production and course creation. Our goal is to build several online courses showing how each shower remodel is built, it’s a tremendous project that will take years. But we’re committed to doing it and have seen the existing courses help many people
I'm sure you are a great help to Steve.
