    You are one of the few contractors that I see install a shower pan without penetrating it on the inside and/or top. It seems most of the other tilers on youtube drill through it, although they do use waterproofing techniques. Another observation; you don't have comments in any of the videos, that I've seen anyway, say, " You are doing this wrong." Most of the other videos have comments saying something about code violations, poor waterproofing, or a number of other things. I am in the process of remodeling my bathroom starting from the studs. I'll use your methods for my guidance. Thank you so much for spending the time to make videos to help us DIYers save money and get beautiful results (I hope I will anyway).

      The proper way to do it is by floating the curb using a metal mesh. Penetrating the liner is unaccepted because water will eventually penetrate the liner after couple of years . If a shower curb is constructed from wood studs mold will start growing on the curb. Penetrate the liner is a short cut contractors are using and it is against code.

    Good job. Why do you cut the tiles a shorter length for the curb rather than leaving them the same length and cutting small tiles on the ends of the curb? Is it just uniformity?

    • @josephk9182

      The small tiles I cut from 12x12 tiles. I did not have enough 12x24 tiles for it . Yes you can do it also.

    I've worked with the pail but I prefer a big square dish basin the rubberier the better, i like getting the trowel in there sideways.. Its an idea, if you never saw it you might not think to change, but getting the trowel in & working without scooping with a 2nd trowel saves time & cleaning.

    Very nice video. I like how you explained everything. I'm doing my first DIY bathroom tile job and thanks for mentioning the threshold since I was wondering what to put in the corners. 2 questions.
    1. Did you put a threshold also on the inside of the shower step?
    2. I see you are using a thin set already pre mixed. I like that, which kind is it and did you use it for the whole bathroom?

    • @josephk9182

      Thank you. I did not use threshold inside of the shower step. I did not use a pre mix thin set . I use Mapei rich in polymer thin set that is recommended to use in shower and water environment.

    shouldn't the top tile be slopped into the shower itself? this way any water on the surface of that tiel would then simply run into the drain, if its level the water can and will seep onto the bathroom floor.

      He did slope it. Before he started to install it he showed us how he slopes it. That’s why he is putting the top on first and the inside last.

    Why not use same size tile on top of curb as on the side and the floor?

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  6 років тому

      I run out of this tile size and it was a special order from Home Depot . I had to order 1 box of 8 tiles 24x12 inches. I use instead 12x12 tiles for that. But, you are correct, it would be better and easier to use the same tile size.

  • @mscottsimon

    You buttered the tile horizontally but the curb is vertical. Why did you do it this way? And no waterproofing??

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  3 роки тому +1

      Waterproof is not needed because the curb is concrete and the way I install the liner. Please look at the videos below . It doesn't matter how the way you spread the thinset. The most important is that 90% of the tile area will be covered wi th thinset.

  • @gosman949

    I just had my shower done and I was somewhat disappointed that they used metal strips like you used instead of bullnose tile. I'm having to get use to the metal when I was expecting a total tile job. Is the metal stripping common? My contractor said the tile I picked out did not have bullnose. But he should have explained that and I may have picked out a tile that had bullnose pieces.

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  5 років тому +1

      The metal is commonly used as a threshold in tile when a bull-nose tile is not available. It will be very difficult to find 2 sides bull nose tile that will fit your shower curbs. The tiles I used on the curbs are bull nose but only one side bull nose.

    • @gosman949
      @gosman949 5 років тому

      @@josephk9182my contractor explained that he doesn't like bull-nose because you have to use too much grout and the metal gives a cleaner look. Still I would have liked for him to have explained that first.

      You should NEVER EVER USE REDGUARD IN A SHOWER!!!!!!!!!! REDGUARD REQUIRES THAT YOU USE A MODIFIED THINSET FOR THE TILES. MODIFIED THINSET IS FORTIFIED WITH LATEX WHICH IS ORGANIC AND IS A FOOD SOURCE FOR MOLD GROWTH!!!!!!!!!!! UNMODIFIED THINSET ONLY IN A SHOWER!!!!

    As a tile installer, what i see wrong here, is that he did not waterproofed the shower floor and walls. and that space between the floor and wall, all the inside and outside corners had to be patched and waterproofed. my opinion.

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  6 років тому +1

      Wrong. I waterproof the shower floor with PVC liner under the quick - slope. You should not waterproof the quick slope by painting the quick-slope. The work is done according to Tile Council of North America (TCNA).

    • @georgegrigoras2019
      @georgegrigoras2019 6 років тому +6

      what about the water getting in between the mud bed and the liner? Is that according to TCNA? Even if the liner is sloped to the drain, the water will still remain under. I had the chance to redo a lot of showers done this way, and i know why Im asking you this.

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  6 років тому

      They can not because the liner s going 8 inches above the floor and bside I water proof the wall here needed using aticrete hydro ban which is better than red guard.

    • @grady1807
      @grady1807 4 роки тому +1

      George Grigoras isn’t that why there are weep holes in the drain assembly? From what I’ve learned you do not waterproof the top of the mud pan except around the edges

    • @ControversialPaul
      @ControversialPaul 4 роки тому +2

      The manufacturer of Oatey actually recommends NOT waterproofing the top of the mud pan. The reason for this is because when the water gets in between the pan liner and the red guard membrane (which it will) it will create mold since there will be no ventilation in between the two impervious membranes.
