What beautiful work! I always wondered how vertical tiles would stick to a wall and not fall off. There is also a wire mesh backing to the substrate surface, probably to create a better grip for thinset. Very interesting. May end up trimming tiles on both (not one) sides. Obviously that won't be a problem if installing horizontal tiles. 2) the floor has to be perfectly leveled or the tiles at the top may not line perfectly?? Or better to start from top? Hi there, I'm redoing my shower and it's waterproofed and I installed the marble on the Schluter triangular corner bench. Since it overhangs by about an inch it makes for a difficult cut. I feel like I saw a video on this channel where the guy in this video created a notch in the marble and slid the tile behind the notch to avoid sort of a "U" shape cut, and instead is just an "L" shape. Would you be able to direct me to that video?
Hi. I’m about to tile my 4x6 shower. I have a Schluter pre sloped pan that I put the Kerdi over. I used the Latricete waterproofing material that you paint on over the Durock Would it hurt the Kerdi if I put a coat on it before I tile over it? I got two free 5 gallon buckets. It is greyish green liquid. I put three coats on the wall and shower bench. I figured I have plenty why not throw a coat on the floor. So what do you think? Thanks for the great information in the video
It’s hard to say, we’ve never done that. If the Kerdi was installed per Schluter and is bonded well then you should be okay. Good job with waterproofing DuRock. Some people skip that step. What kind of tile are you using on the walls and pan?
I’m using 10x30 wall tiles and small 2 “ hexagon mats on the floor. I got two five gallons of Hydro Ban for free from a friend I was just thinking I have it why not put a coat on just to be extra waterproof if there is such a thing
I noticed that you preparing a lot.. big batch of thinset for the time it takes to install the tiles. Are you not afraid that the thinset in the bucket will harder and you will have to dump it? Do you have a trick so the thinset in the bucket last longer without hardering?
@@HomeRepairTutor thanks also do you have a video to tile the curve? i live the 1/3 offsetting, so start with full center piece, then to the left cut 1/3 of full piece then 1/3 of the second piece , right? then what do you do to the right side of the full piece? same pattern as like the left side?
Your Tiles installing it's very good , I have one question Tiles have same measurements but have two different thickness can we install them both, look we have different color after installation
You have to account for the difference in thickness so the faces of the tile sit flush with each other after setting or it will look very unprofessional. There are ways to build up with thinset or a combination of products to bring the thinner tile up. It is time consuming.
I will be using 6 x 24 (23 1/2) tile, but would like to do the half mark and not in 3rds, would that be ok? I like your videos, they help a lot. Thank you.
WOW GREAT VIDEO! What size trowel was that? And could tell me why my trowel lines aren’t that less then full height some times? I think my Mapei LFT thinset is too dry?
Technically yes per Schluter but you can use their ALL-SET to set tiles, abs that’s a modified thin-set. Ardex always warrantees using their modified thin-set when setting tiles over KERDI
Did you mix the thinset on the lower end of the water recommendation for these tiles? I found that when i mixed the all set for the edge band and membrane stuff (i used mostly kerdi board) and mixed it to the wetter side (7.5-8.5 quarts per 50 pound bag) it stayed that consistency for about an hour then noticeably started to dry after that. I haven't mixed an entire 50 pound bag yet because there was no way i could apply it and trowel it out fast enough to do all the water proofing in my shower. I do know you want the thinset drier for the tile, but I am worried when I mix it it will become too dry before i am able to use it all. The consistency at about an hour and a half was kind of like slightly wet sand I thought. Still held a notch on the trowel pretty well, and I am assuming that is what I want for putting these 12x24 tiles down. I bought rubi cyclone spacers to do mine and my shower is exactly the same size as this one in this video, and I am even running the same size tiles and same direction, just minus the shower bench and I have a window on my back wall that I am going to trim with the schluter pieces like a niche, and then a niche on the opposite of plumbing wall.
Thanks guys, great video & content. Question: I see quartz slabs being installed using 100% silicone inplace of thinset mortar. Would it not be possible to silicone attach the porcelain tiles as well?
@@nickad We got quartz shower walls installed. Those slabs are 1 piece 5ftx6ft and 2 pieces 5ftx3ft -- huge panels. The installer used 100% silicone, but as blobs that are 9 inches apart. The same method should work for tiles as well. However, with tiles, each one being smaller and you need many of them to cover a shower wall, you will need to think about the spacings. What would you do for the spacing and how water proof would that be? Thats probably why people dont silicone tiles? May be you can bead the silicone as if its back buttering with thinset, you may still end up with uneven tile depths from the wall. Good luck with your pursuit.
It’s to help get better thin-set mortar coverage on the tile and wall. Trowel size depends on the size, shape, and thickness of tile. 12x24 are large format, so we recommend back buttering or back troweling and directional troweling both the wall and tile to get 95 to 100% mortar coverage between the tile and wall. This along with a good mortar, like Ardex X77, will ensure a good bond
Good morning! Love all your videos. We are actually looking to lay porcelain tiles (12 x 24) and flat pebbles on our shower floor! What type of mortar are you using for this? Modified or unmodified? Thank you for the tip on the white mortar as the tile place gave us grey
How long did that take you to do the first wall? It seems like you laid all those in a day. Thats like 2 days for me using the Proleveling Tile Leveling System. I suck....but then again I dont set tile for a living.
Hi and I use mapei modified thin set LFT I mix the whole 50 lbs bag and I don't have much time to to complete the job by myself , the thin set thicking . Do you have any problem with these thin set
Great job and great video. Thank you for sharing. When you're back buttering in addition to spreading thinset on the wall do you use a smaller notch trowel than if you were only applying thinset to one surface?
Thank you, trowel size depends on the tile shape, size, and weight, e.g. 3" x 6" subway tile need 1/4" x 1/4" square notch trowel. So back buttering is mostly to get the 95% thin-set mortar coverage more than anything.
NativeNYerChicHK great question, we used porcelain and it’s water absorption is 0.5%, so it’s not sensitive to the gray thin-set mortar like say a marble species
Home Repair Tutor Thanks! Doing my own bathroom, shower build just completed and I’m about to use very similar tile, using the white All-Set just in case. I’m a an overly cautious over-preparer LOL And because of this particular series of yours, I’m going vertical with my large tile. I really like the look! So thank you!
@@NativeNYerChicHK awesome, if you have any questions just send me an email, it's a bit easier to communicate that way than in the comments. We highly recommend using a laser level and back troweling the tiles to help in setting over thin-set buildup in the corners. Directional trowel in the direction of the short side, we didn't do that in our video but recommend it. That way air will escape easier through the trowel ridges. Also make sure to trowel thin-set on the back of the tile such that it matches the direction on the wall. And you might want to look into T-Lock if your tiles are 12x24, it helps keep all the tiles flush with each other. Here's my email jeff@homerepairtutor.com
Home Repair Tutor Thanks so much! Got my leveling system and my dual line laser level at the ready! Thanks for the tip about the directional troweling towards the short side, but that makes absolute sense since any trapped air will have a shorter route to escape! If I have question I will definitely shoot you guys an email.
When installing vertical tile, it's ALWAYS start from a level line above the shower floor since it can be (and almost always is) un-level. This is a big mistake in my opinion to just start tiling from the floor because your grout lines will magnify your mistake as you go up the wall. This mistake is mentioned at minute 8:30...."I should have..."
@@tracis.5673 Traci, to install vertical tile, you need to screw a 2x4 or a sturdy piece of finished wood to the wall perfectly level. The piece of wood will hold your vertical tile in place while it dries and guarantee square grout lines. It should be less than one tile above the floor line. When your tile dries, you remove the board, fix and seal any holes left by screwing the board to the wall. Then you will put in the last row of vertical tile across the floor line which you will need to cut each piece to match the floor line. ** Side notes ** If you are doing a shower floor, always do your walls (and ceiling if desired) first except for that last row so you don't mess up newly installed tile/grout. Next do the floor. Last of all tile the last row of vertical tile so the water drains on top of the floor tile. I hope this helps.
@@tewcool2539 So what do you do with the space left over from the 2" X 4" you removed? Seems to me, and I'm no expert, that with that vertical 1/3 staggered layout you would have to start at the floor?
@@rdmj64 HI Roy, you just cut each tile to match the space below the 2x4, and please note that each piece is usually a different size AND maybe uneven across the floor line. Measure the distance at both ends of the tile and cut that angle. The floor tile will cover any small gaps.
@@HomeRepairTutor Thank you so much, it is an eight footer ceiling and I intend to tile up my shower walls from bottom to top just the ceiling will be left with the dry wall and and a bathroom ceiling paint. Would that be okay ?
hello great work guys! I have a question, i am going to be tiling 10x27" on my tub surround using versa bond lft . can I continue to tile up as guys do or would I need to wait a bit on my first row to cure before tiling up .
Good vid. At 8:54, was the shower corner curved, making shaving the corner necessary? Was it not square? What if you don't want to stagger the vertical tiles? Can they be installed like a game grid? What about tiling the ceiling? Link for laser, please. Have yet to look at the course and written content. Thank you.
It was curved just a little, due to Kerdi-Band but nothing drastic. You can install tile any way but the walls should be as flat and plumb as possible. Tile ceiling is optional but use Ardex X77 thin-set, it’s the best for ceilings. Lately we’ve been using a DeWALT laser but also like Bosch
I was wondering about this too since the TCNA says to offset by thirds. The vertical stacked is getting popular so how do you keep the tiles from cupping?
Is it more aesthetically pleasing to use large format tiles in small bathrooms? I am redoing a 7' x 4.5' bathroom. The shower area will be 34" from front to back including 4" curb. Was planning on using a 3"x6" beveled white subway tile for the walls and a 6"x6" tile for the floor, now I sm not sure. Fyi, I have zero design skills.
smaller tiles would be best for the shower floor so they can maintain the slope, eg pebble stones or 2”x2” mosaics. Subway tiles will look great on the walls. We’d tile the floors first then shower walls and maintenance expansion gaps at any change of plane
@@HomeRepairTutor One more more question, I was planning on using the same tile on the floor outside the shower stall as I used inside the shower stall but now not so sure if that would look good. What would you do? Use the same tile and make it a continuous run from shower to main floor or use a different tile outside the shower?
mixing thin-set per the directions helps with pot life, Schluter's ALL-SET has gotten a lot better in this respect. Ardex X77 has the best pot life and working time in our experience.
Yes I see the laser line on the side of tile so your grout line is level going up but how are you leveling the face of tile do you use laser level there to ?
You can use a standard 2 or 4 foot level on the face of the tile. We also used the T-Lock leveling system with this tile and that helps tremendously with keeping the tiles flat and even with each other

Can the kerdi shower pan have a step ladder placed on top to tile ceiling tiles?
Do I need modified or unmodified mortar? Please help my tiles are 12x24 porcelain tile
What brand t-lock system do guys commonly use?
Perfect Level Master, what size tile are you setting?
@@HomeRepairTutor Same as the video - 24x24 vertical for shower walls
@@srnewnam big tiles, well worth the investment in T-Lock. You shower or a customer's?
Hello, you do beautiful work. Question, can the vertical tile be placed alone the full bottom then upward.
One question: why didn’t you guys use white All-Set? Might there be a risk of that light tile darkening over time with the dark thinset?
@@NativeNYerChicHK sounds good, very excited to see your progress
What size grout line?
When installing vertical tile, it's ALWAYS start from a level line above the shower floor since it can be (and almost always is) un-level. This is a big mistake in my opinion to just start tiling from the floor because your grout lines will magnify your mistake as you go up the wall. This mistake is mentioned at minute 8:30...."I should have..."
Can you further explain this?
@@tewcool2539 do you grout the floor tile and 1st wall tile if I use this method. Or does it just rest on the floor tile
Great video!! I wish you could tile my shower...awesome work!!😉
Thank you, made our day 😊
you guys did the pebble floor first?
yes
What is the notch depth on the trowel?
What about ceiling of the washroom ? Is not going to be secured with the orange protective sheet
it’s not necessary for 8 or 9 foot ceilings unless you’re very tall and concerned about water splashing.
@@HomeRepairTutor
So is it okay to leave the cieling with the simple sheet rock without having it plastered by kerdi cement on it ?
@@HomeRepairTutor Thank you so much, it is an eight footer ceiling and I intend to tile up my shower walls from bottom to top just the ceiling will be left with the dry wall and and a bathroom ceiling paint. Would that be okay ?
@@shehzadkamal should be okay as long as the bathroom is ventilated. Do you have a strong bathroom fan vented to the exterior?

are the spacers providing 1/8 or 1/16 gaps?
Spacers can provide both 1/8" or 1/16" - just need to choose the size before getting them.
Yes. I was curious which was used specifically in this shower
@@ChikaCheeks He says they are 1/16th here: ua-cam.com/video/PXlbNn_WpQ0/v-deo.html
hello great work guys! I have a question, i am going to be tiling 10x27" on my tub surround using versa bond lft . can I continue to tile up as guys do or would I need to wait a bit on my first row to cure before tiling up .
If Versabond works properly you should be able to set one tile after another.
Thank you!
Very informative and well done. Do use a rubber mallet to pound those big tiles and avoid nerve damage to your hands.
What size trowel notches did you use?
1/2
Where is he video for installing the carpet?
Almost forgot, here’s an Amazon link to our tools -- amzn.to/2OlirR3
How do you keep the thinset from drying out during cutting and installation?
mixing thin-set per the directions helps with pot life, Schluter's ALL-SET has gotten a lot better in this respect. Ardex X77 has the best pot life and working time in our experience.
Why didn’t you use a level when tiling up the wall ? I don’t see a level ANYWHERE how do you know if your falling in or out ?
We use laser levels, it may not be evident in the video but we wouldn’t set tile without a laser level
Yes I see the laser line on the side of tile so your grout line is level going up but how are you leveling the face of tile do you use laser level there to ?
Josh is asking how do you know the tile face is plumb?
You can use a standard 2 or 4 foot level on the face of the tile. We also used the T-Lock leveling system with this tile and that helps tremendously with keeping the tiles flat and even with each other
Thanks for clarifying
If I'm using the shluter system. Wall board and pan system witch do I install first.
Are you using Kerdi over drywall or Kerdi-Board?
@@HomeRepairTutor kerdi 1/2
@@jeffbeam7152 we install drywall then dry fit the pan then apply the Kerdi to the drywall. The final step is to install the pan and flash it with Kerdi-Band to the Kerdi walls. Here's the first video we made showing that process ua-cam.com/video/ddDKHJbDYiY/v-deo.html

Can you set these in a horizontal brick pattern, even though my tile has an up arrow on the short side ?

@@felixamador6465 Yes you can, The arrow is there so all tiles face the same direction, wether up down left or right the arrows on all tile must point the same way. (asthetic purposes only)
