Hello from Philippines. The little 'bulbs' that grow from the mother plants that you called 'corms' are actually called 'bulbils'. I think corms/bulbs are terms used for caladiums/colocasia. While rhizome and bulbils are used for alocasia. In addition, the right scientific name for this plant is Alocasia mitcholitziana 'maxkowskii' and has a common name of Alocasia green velvet. Alocasia frydek however is the right name if A. mitcholitziana is a variegated one. Hope you learn from this!
Interestinggg, you are the second one to share that Frydek refers to the variegated only. Its such a misnomer because even Summer Rayne Oakes growers call the green varieties Frydek as well.
@@onlyplants I have had people tell me the true frydek is the variegated one too. The solid green is listed and sold as frydek everywhere I have ever seen it. Hmmm 🤔 very interesting
@@onlyplants yes, they always mistakenly labeled this plant as A. frydek, that's why we, Filipinos Alocasia enthusiasts are teaching other plant collectors to use the right name/term for the species.
I have my Frydek growing in leca along with my alocasia cucullata one too. The cucullata is growing like steroids in my leca. I converted the Frydek plant 3 weeks ago when I purchased it from Home Depot. It's doing good in leca. It already gave me a new leaf and I see another one growing.
Omg yessssss the frydek is one of my absolute favorite plants. I have one but I’m thinking about buying another 😁. I wish I could afford the variegated one but at $500 usd and up its too rich for me. The die back is usually due to overwintering. Mine seemed to do very well this winter. I kept it right by a humidifier. So far I have not gotten spider mites on any of my Alocasia. I wonder why they are such magnets to spider mites?
@@onlyplants so far I have been very lucky over the last two plus years to not get any on the few I have but I know they are prone and it will most likely happen one day. I keep them far apart from windows and other plants. Because I know they can get them. 😊
Spider mites on these can be eliminated by monthly rinsing the leaves with very warm water, especially the undersides. No poisons needed. If it's already heavily infested, rinse at every watering for a little while to get them under control first.
The plant epidemic fluctuates greatly. I have a Friedec, too. Your plant is prettier than ours. raise for three months But our plants can't see the baby yet. I'm waiting for your video. Please upload a lot of videos.
Speaking of alocasia, I’d love to know more about the one behind you! Is it a Watsoniana ? 🥴 I get a peak at it every time we get this view and it’s GORGEOUS!
That depends on your environment, and your soil make-up. They want a bit of drying out period but not for long. If your soil is more compacted and dries up slowly, consider watering small amounts (sprays) or less frequently
I would say that ones grown in lower light tend to be darker as they produce more chlorophyll. Conversely those grown in higher light will have light green leaves
Hi there. Is the frydek really a jewel alocasia? i have mine for 1.5 yrs and it has breached 120cm in height for me. The leaves are huge. Always thought jewel alocasia are like the melo, black velvet, silver dragon which remains pretty small 😊
Hi 👋. “Apply some pesticide on them …” - in your case you put some eg furadan / kenfuran inside the soil mix every 3 months to prevent spidermites ? Or mix with water to spray ? Spraying seems impossible when have many plants and leaves all facing front with spidermites hiding on the back of leaves 😅. Hope you can share some tips
You can also water the soil with neem oil solution. The roots take up the essential oils and to the leaves. Be sure to emulsify neem oil water with a few drops of soaps. You can also spray neem oil on the leaves.
@@onlyplants Neem water with dishwasher drops… nice. This seems like a good method . Presumably 10ml of Neem oil for 1 litre of water and let say 3 drops of dishwasher drops ya. Thanks As long as can get rid of spider mites I am game for it. Spider mites are tough to get rid. Tiring … other pests I have no issue.
Jet stream of water can knock off most of these. Soapy water will do some serious damage to the mites. But some pesticide or neem oil added to the soapy water is most surefire way of ridding them. Repeat one more time in 1 week time to break the life cycle of the mites. As new eggs could have hatched in 1 week
I had to give up on allocasia, a little bit too much water the leaves turn brown and die, a little underwatered leaves turn brown and die. I've never had another plant that was as picky about needing an exact amount of water.
Haha the key is the potting media. They like it very airy and porous. Never dried out completely for too long, but never soggy or compacted for long either
Rule out spidermites, increase light, and fertilize lightly. If the leaves are pristine then the roots should be ok. But if it has crisps or bit of yellowing you may have root dryness or rot.
The real secret is heat. Almost nothing else matters, really. They like it hotter than most plants and will spew new leaves in the hottest part of the summer and pout in the winter. A heat mat can immediately resurrect any sad Alocasia, especially a Fryek.
Make sure its horticultural ones… not the ones that produce soot that we use in barbeque 😅 you can find charcoals safe for plants in online marketplaces. Especially in orchid supply stores
@@onlyplants I left my alocasia outside under the hot California sun, watered it 1 time in the month i had it outside. The indestructible alocasia ended up doubling in size. Meanwhile, anything i try with pothos means death 💀

😈
Your propagation videos=therapy. I love your propagation videos! Thank you!
Thank you 😀
I just got a Young Frydek a few weeks ago and you’re right about it looking fake. No camera can capture how velvety and shiny it is!

I love when I get new plants and find your videos immediately for them! Great vid, you’re so brave hahah

I usually see this everywhere in my Place here in The Philippines. Didn't know this is endemic here lol so that is why

Sean they get big like about 12 or more inches leaves
Thx for the info😁 hope you can do vid for red congo philodendron
I dont have that one but the variegated one is so insanely beautiful
Ikr haha
Shaun, would you say there are darker forms than others? Sometimes I see pictures of almost black/green leaves but wonder if it’s just a filter?

Furadan on top of the soil please. They are not meant to be mixed and sprayed. Should you choose the spray method curacron would be a better match.

Hi Sean, i do have yellowimg of leaves a lot! I love the frydek though. Ty for the tips 🇵🇭
Wooh thats sign of overwatering and/or insufficient light 😀 but if its just the oldest leaf and happens rarely that is very normal for all plants
I love your channel. But I think you should rethink the background music🤪
😅
It just Alocasia micholitziana.
"Frydeck" Only for variegated version

😅😅
Can you share what you use to prevent spider mites?
Neem oil in soapy water, or chemical pesticides. Most of them work
hi channel, I have a question. Where I can buy the activated charcoal
You can find food grade ones online. People use them to make coloring for food.
@@onlyplants thank you
They do get big like around 18 to 20 inches i guess
Yo shawn if you have an FB page, I can show you my frydek.... it is actually the easiest alocasia to grow i guess
I filmed this months ago but yeah you are right they get huge haha. I saw some in nursery tours
💚💚
love it!!!!

Good evening ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Sean...this video is very informative...
Think I still need to find the courage to cut up my dragon scale....hahaha
Haha Im about to make a dragon scale video… 😀
Thats awesome...i will wait for that video to drop before deciding...😛
Those plants are hard for me to take care of sometimes they like light and sometimes they don't!
They love light 😀 bright bright bright indirect but its the watering thats challenging
I always burn mine 😢 also always fighting spider mites but not any other plants get them
They are the perfect plant to take spidermites off other plants lol. Bait plant
I guess I’ll see that as the bright side 😁 I clean her daily and keep her on my desk all alone
inexpensive? In Germany they‘re like 60€ for a mature plant or around 25€ for a younger one.
Whoaaaaaa thats insane. Prices should come down though, when supply meets demand. They are one of the faster and easier to grow and propagate.
