In this video I take you through everything I've done to care for my alocasia frydek variagata and how I managed to get it out of the one leaf club! I struggled with this plant for a really long time, but after a year of owning the variegated frydek now, i think I've finally managed to figure it out and get to know what it likes, and what it doesn't like. I hope these tips and trick help for this houseplant, and do let me know in the comments if you've got any questions!

I‘m from Germany and this plant is getting quite cheap here! I bought my baby Frydek for 30 Euros and it has stunning variegation. A German online shop is selling Frydeks in L Size for 49 Euros at the moment. They are absolutely beautiful

I too live in Germany and have seen the Harmony site. The price is really good. Amazing how inexpensive they’ve gotten. I bought a humongous ( 9 leaves and 8 babies) on Kleinanzeige and although I’ve had success with the green “Frydek” this one is a Unkraut!! It grows very fast so that I will soon have to repot it. Good luck.

I have a problem with too many pups. It’s almost Dec. and this plant is pushing out crazy pups. I’m contemplating repotting it but I’m afraid she might go into dormancy? She’s growing in Semi Hydro Lecha and the leaves are humongous between 38 and 43 cm. The glass vessel is overflowing with ca. 13 babies. What do you think? 3 of the 8 leaves are bending down and I believe they’re on the way to the light although they’re not browning or loosing Color. This is the first winter with her so I don’t know how she will react. What do you think I should do?

I have a small one and 2 medium sized ones from a couple of different sellers, and thankfully they’ve been doing well since I’ve had them (a couple of months) :)
I just repotted one into semi-hydro and discovered that it’s working on a couple of corms so I’m hoping they’ll be ready to harvest soon 🤞🏻😍
    Yours is absolutely gorgeous!! 💚🤍💚

    Yours is stunning! Great video.
I had a similar experience with my Cuprea when I got it home. I had researched beforehand and everyone had differing experience and opinions. I was ready for a real battle. I sat it nearby a sunny West facing window (southern hemisphere) in a chunky aroid mix and it hasn’t looked back. No tantrums, no need for excess humidity. Just give it sun and keep up the water and it just takes care of itself basically.
I haven’t quite cracked my silver dragon yet. It hasn’t had a tantrum but I’ve seen zero growth since I owned it. Parked it next to my Cuprea to see if it responds equally as well as that one.

  • @brianhardaway9716
    @brianhardaway9716 9 місяців тому

Claire I have learned very much from your videos. The Alocasia is my favorite species but the Frydek variegated is my favorite plant. It grows like a weed but it has to be content with its surroundings. It also grows in moderate light too. Light that’s strong enough to read a book is great. BUT the real key to this baby is semi hydro. I love playing in soil but I am slowly converting all my Alocasia to semi hydro with Lecha. I find Pons to be too condensed and although I did mix some Perlit and Lecha to it, it wasn’t doing the nasty. They seem to love Lecha I believe because of the airy moist environment? I find it interesting how the next leaf is most times larger as the prior leaf. I presently have 9 with 5 being 40cm or more and 8 babies. I have a large glass container which in sommer will be broken to repot her. They’ve gotten so “Inexpensive” in just 1 year though. I wouldn’t suggest buying a huge baby since with the right care they will obtain that in no time. One tip: If growing with semi hydro and a glass container be careful of the sunlight on the roots because they will be damaged. I use a sheet of paper to block the sun and the roots are huge and white. I believe the reason for dormancy as well as hanging leaves is too little watering or letting it dry out too long? Thanks again for the info.

You're so lucky to have your standard room humidity at 50-65%! Mine is that WITH two big humidifiers😬 If the tank is left empty the humidity falls to 40% in fall and below 30% during winter. I didn't have to keep the humidifiers running during summer.

I only just got a frydek as my first ever alocasia a few months back. My experience with it must be a fluke or something. I got a little corm as a freebie from another collector. I was keeping it pretty warm, cozy, and moist while it sprouted. I decided to keep growing it in LECA as it developed. I have been keeping it in pretty bright conditions and it seemed to do very well right on my south facing window in a Wardian case. I have moved it into my IKEA cabinet and so far it seems happy. We'll see how things go but I've had amazingly good luck with it thus far. Watching this video seems to corroborate some of my decisions if it's worked for Claire.

Hi Claire - I’d love to know what process you use to transfer your alocasia to pon (mainly if you did a transitional period where it didn’t have a water reservoir, and if so, when you knew it was ready for a reservoir). I’ve killed so many plants now in the attempt to transfer them to pon, including a couple of poor little alocacias and my first anthurium (clarinervium) :’(

I love your channel and of course the subject matter!
I also purchased the same plant. Semi hydro is something I am familiar with, but not for Alocasia. You stated to keep water in the inner pot, approximately how much water do I keep in the reservoir ( 1/3 of the depth of the inner pot? )
Also, when do you add more liquid to the pot? You don't allow the plant to dry out?
Please let me know and keep up the good work.
    Thank you, George

The oldest leave is now yellowing and dying off, do you reckon is just from still being acclimatising to my conditions and the new substrate or am I doing something wrong? I would suggest, that she should think about investing in a moisture meter. If she tends to overwater plants, a moisture meter can be a big help for getting things right. And if she likes colorfull plants, why not get her a tradescantia? They are pretty, hardy in my experience and propagate very easily in water :3

@@marta_kedra I’d not heard of doing this before but that does makes sense. So would you flush it every few days? I find it hard to tell if pon has dried up. I take it that helps the roots adjust to a water intake only?

@@sianrenaud8800 my dry pon becomes lighter and kind of whiter in colour, it stores moisture for quite some time so I would water as usually, about once a week, depending on all the other factors. This method helps the plant to get used to a new substrate and gives time to make new "water roots" with lower risk of rotting. Also I found it crucial to clean the roots well of all previous organic substrate. Good luck to you, take care :)
